I owned one of the originally released Fender Toronado guitars 20+ years ago. I loved that guitar and the sound it produced. I eventually wound up selling it because I became a drug addict loser. I always regretted selling that sumbitch. And then earlier today I saw this exact model on Sweetwater and immediately pulled the trigger, because why the fuck not? I deserve it.
Hey we’ve all made mistakes my man. I was an out of control addict myself. But we’re better today which is awesome. Glad you got to replace your original Toronado

Just came home with a 3-Color Sunburst Toronado after playing it for 10 minutes in the store. This, of course, was the first video I clicked on to confirm I did an excellent thing.

I just bought one of these about 45 minutes ago. The pickups aren't "just ok", like someone else mentioned. They're freaking phenomenal for the price of the guitar. The sound is on par with Epiphone Probuckers, but in a guitar that cost half as much as a Standard Pro. Do they sound like a set of Pearly Gates? Probably not, but for $349, they're pretty great sounding, with tonal nuances that most cheap guitar pickups don't pick up. I am not getting squeal, but I usually don't play super loud anyway. I do use a metal zone on a fairly high distortion setting, and still nothing. Frets ends feel like a heavily played 10 year old guitar right out of the box. I would have preferred a more vintage look on the neck finish, but not going to kick it out of the house for that. VERY happy with the purchase!
@John Cóndor no, it isn't. I'm 100% spaniard, and for us is "TORNADO"... We don't have that word "toronado" in the spanish language... Don't know where it comes from... Nice guitar and review, btw.

This is probably the best guitar review I’ve seen! The level of detail and depth is crazy! Thank you so much man, you make it easy for someone to love this guitar 😀
After many years of dreaming of playing the guitar, I decided to actually do it. When looking up a "beginner" guitar, the Toronado in Mystic Seafoam Green immediately caught my eye. This review really helped me in my decision to get it...which I haven't done yet because I'm waiting for my next paycheck...and thank you for the thorough review!

I remember seeing Explosions in the Sky on ACL and one of their guitarists played a Toronado and I fell in love with it. The originals were poplar and had Atomic humbuckers. That's pretty cool they stuck with those specs.
I really enjoy all the Paranormal series designs. After a lifetime of strat/teles having something familiar but still weird is totally welcome. Playing a few of them I realized that I like tele sounds and everything about them is made better by the offset body shape. I do wish Fender would do more things in lake placid blue and sherwood green on their regular line. Likely they know that if they put those colors on the MIM stuff I'd never pony up to buy anything else.
Probably the best sounding one from the Paranormal Series. These pickups sound very close to the Chinese Alnico2 P94s that I’ve put in my old Ibanez Gio - clear and warm.
Nice look at the Squier version. I bought the Fender Mexican which also had the "Atomic" pick-ups. They had to go. I swapped them out for Stew-Mac's Golden Age buckers and the difference was incredible. All the harshness was gone, transformed into smother rounder tones and driven..? Well... Fender make great single coil pick-ups, my favourites are the Fat Texas jobs, but Atomics are far from anything that the name would infer. The neck was superb, as good as a US Strat, a little fatter perhaps but very comfortable, and the tail piece was a stop bar with a Tun-a-matic style bridge. Hit some problems with the string spacings when I did the pick-up changeout, lesson learned there. The Mex is probably a bit more expensive than the Squier, but maybe worth the extra? Like you, the finish was what attracted me to it, it was "Midnight Blue" (almost black) with a black pick guard, which I changed out for a vintage looking white marbled thing. For a Mexican Fender, it rocks.
Almost two years after this video (and some others about this guitar) released, I finally gave in and bought one this year. Can't say I'm disappointed. It's unlike anything else though and takes a little getting used to.

About time Squier moved away from shitty printed tort pickguards and got some good looking material! Wish they'd done it back in like 2013 when I bought a couple from the Vintage Modified line. Looks like a pretty sweet guitar, hope she treats you well!
Thank you I just purchased the same guitar in a Burst Finish Tortoise Pick Guard. I like the Bullet series. I have the Mustang SB and its really ultra cheap but the Squire Bullet Telecaster is also good. I am 70 and I have been playing guitar since age 14.

As for the others, I like the offset Paranormal Tele, under the pickguard it's stock routed for three pickups so one can mod up a Nashville Tele with middle Strat pickup on a Jazzmaster body with comfort tummy cuts etc, truly unique.
Great rundown, thanks. Completely with you on the weight, that’s huge for me too. I like that they’ve sculpted the body for comfort too. Squier have some fantastic guitars at great prices right now. Veggie Indian by the way.
I just got my Offset Telecaster and I am really impressed by the quality. I already play a Jazzmaster so I'm used to the shape. The neck feels great and the pickups are OK. They will get replaced soon. The finish looks good and it is light!
I bought the same model, some color. It caught my eye too, and your first look at it convinced me to pull the trigger. I have been enjoying it. Like you, I prefer the neck pickup. I don't usually play with much gain, but the Toronado seems to really scream with some dirt. I mean that in a good way. I have tried dialing down the treble on my Fender Blues Deluxe and pumping the mids, and I get a great early 90s grunge sound with both pickups.
I had a 2003 toronado and I sold it to a student, huge mistake. I've never missed a guitar so much, it has an individual feel and personality. You could compare it with a Gibson SG, but it has a soul of it's own, if you get one don't get rid of it.
That might be my answer to a les Paul! I’ve always been a fender player, I’ve had Gibson’s before but just could not gel with them; too heavy; shorter scale sounded like mud, but still you want that full fat tone that single coils can’t always give you.
@@islander4986 I find 24 feels too short. 24.75 feels much closer to fender scale. which it is, but just a tad softer strings and you do notice high up the neck a difference.

Love the look and weight, but those pickups have a bit too much treble for me. I prefer a much more traditional Les Paul style sound from a humbucker. Very interesting review. Thanks 👍 Glad you are showing the paranormal line. It’s a very cool looking group of guitars.
real tawk the bigger bodies allow for more comfort with an arm rest and doesnt require me to turn the guitar into a more "upward front" sort of position to be able to nail takes. i can understand why chuck loved the mockingbird model, it was because it gave him excellent playability and creative freedom!
If I heard you correctly about the pickups it sounded like you said 'Duo Atomic humbucking'. These would probably be the Atomic humbucker found on the Duo Sonic in HS configuration. I have one of these and it is nice pickup.
Razor blade scraping in an up motion with the grain will take that off. Oil it back up and it'll blend nicely. Or just do it when you scrap the plastic nut with Tusq. I can't get into these body shapes and never had Squire blow me away and I own a proper Cort guitar too (maker of Squire).
It’s a nice guitar, but why does Fender (I guess this is technically squier though) do such a crap job of reissuing colors? LP blue is one of my favorites of all time, but the ones I’ve seen are much lighter than this. At least on video. Almost looks purple. Not at all what I remember LP blue looking like. Everything else is awesome.
this must have been a deeper part of the the lake :) And ya it's not the same as other LPB models, even that I've owned. Probably could have been called something else. Like Deep Lake Placid Blue
This guitar is purple correct? It looks great. I hope Squier & Fender change the color name. LPB does not suit this. I appreciate you saying this isn't the best sounding guitar and that you'll see if you can dial it in. I have a gtr that should sound terrific, but it doesn't suit my ears. Btw, "Hi" and that is all..
I dig this color more than the typical Lake Placid Blue myself, but as with all, subjective. John from Learningguitarnow.com plays a Fender strat with wicked color of Green that is very Gretsch...ish. I wish Fender/Squier would come out with that color again!
Back in the day I tried one of these as well as the Cyclone II at one of the local music shops. I liked sound of both but I didn't really care for the look of the Toronado. Now I think they're pretty sleek looking. I dig the string through body.
I've had one for a couple years. Your review was one of the motivating factors.I got a great deal on Reverb for 260€. I have recorded with it and it always sounds good, particularly with riffs and solos. I have a Fender Strat from 1996 and the Toronado neck feels very much like my Fender neck. This is a great guitar. I've had no problems with bridge pick up squealing, but I had a guitar tech adjust the intonation, pickup height, and other stuff. He might have dealt with that issue in his shop. It is great guitar! For me, it's made like an SG or even sounds like a more rock version of an Epiphone DOT. I consider this guitar gig-worthy as a main guitar or back up. Thanks for your review.
Awesome review man. I agree about the bridge pickup, had mine about 6 months now and I've not been able to really get a tone I like from it. Probably going to replace it at some point when I can face that wiring lol.
I was so excited when they reissued the Lead guitars. I went in to test and they had super sharp neck edges. I have to have rounded or rolled style edges. I wonder if the edges are sharp on the new tornado.
So many people love tortoiseshell on lake placid blue, but I absolutely abhor it. I just don't find the colours complement each other at all. That said, a custom metal pickguard from Brad Angrove on this...? **chef's kiss** Thanks for the video.
@@landonbailey I'd trace it out on paper and mail it to him, to be honest. I've asked him a couple times when he's going to start taking orders, as I would love him to make a brushed aluminum guard for my Jimmy Page dragon Tele (not fond of the plastic guard that comes on it).
Nearly bought a second hand one of the original Fenders that came up for sale at a great price while I was looking for a 12-string solid body. Didn't buy it but now tempted again by this cheap version. Only person I ever saw perform with one if the originals was Danish singer Roxy Jules and it sounded great. Talked to her about the guitar and she had only good things to say about it.
This was my guitar of choice all throughout the 2000s in my various local indie bar bands. The original was a great guitar. Had to sell it about 7 years ago and regret it.
I had one of these arrive last week in Mystic Sea Foam. It looks fantastic but I have to say it had a ton of issues. Most alarmingly it arrived back-bowed and the truss rod required a lot of turning to make actual movement. The saddles are also some of the worst I’ve seen on a budget guitar and the nut isn’t great either. I guess I got unlucky since most reviews are very positive but in this price range I really did expect more. Especially from the nut, I really wish guitar companies wouldn’t cut corners here, it’s a vital part of the instrument. I would recommend other brands who produce similar or even better quality offsets for the same or less money. Beyond the looks you might find some costly problems. It’s also definitely a rhythm/punk guitar, soloing doesn’t feel great up on the high end,
Hey Landon, loving the videos. Really unique content you've got going on here. Could you do a video on the Sterling Stingray SR-30, please? Keep up the great work. Cheers!
it's beautiful! i'd like to see it in more than black and blue as color options... i didn't hear anything special tone-wise, but i'd be happy to own one.... thanks for the review
The President's Choice of pickup hahaha mainly Canucks will get that one. I like how you always include at least one weird reference per video! Then you topped it up with Johnny5 then Laurel and Yanni. But Nice sounding Squier and the look is killer!
Atomic humbuckers were the original pickup for these and the Fender Cyclone. They continued on to be the humbucker of various models like the blacktop series Stratocaster. They are very good, pretty high output pickups. If you find on forums you'll see people either love them or hate them. It's pretty much a SD JB pickup. I think they sound fantastic, I'm glad they stayed true to the correct pickup voicing for these guitars.
thank you for making these deep dive reviews. I just broke the tip of the toggle switch on my Toronado, and I could use your video to see which new toggle switch to buy at 7:11 👍

Thanks for your review.
cheers!
@@landonbailey chairs!
Awesome review man. I agree about the bridge pickup, had mine about 6 months now and I've not been able to really get a tone I like from it. Probably going to replace it at some point when I can face that wiring lol.
Thanks for sharing! Let me know what you go with.
I was so excited when they reissued the Lead guitars. I went in to test and they had super sharp neck edges. I have to have rounded or rolled style edges. I wonder if the edges are sharp on the new tornado.
neck and frets are great on the one I have
So many people love tortoiseshell on lake placid blue, but I absolutely abhor it. I just don't find the colours complement each other at all.
That said, a custom metal pickguard from Brad Angrove on this...? **chef's kiss**
Thanks for the video.
do you know shape pickguard would fit?
Omar Rodríguez-López played one during the At The Drive-In days!
It’s also definitely a rhythm/punk guitar, soloing doesn’t feel great up on the high end,
ah that sucks! can you return it?
I have both the Toronado and the offset telecaster. That tele is a wonder...it feels and plays like a premium instrument and has no blemishes.
nice! which colours did you go for?
I have the natural colored one. It looks way better in person than it does online. Btw, great reviews !
I think I would pick the natural one too. I looks like the recent Japanese offset Tele model. cheers!
@@landonbaileyGood choice...Cheers!
Hey Landon, loving the videos. Really unique content you've got going on here. Could you do a video on the Sterling Stingray SR-30, please?
Keep up the great work. Cheers!
hey thanks! I've never seen those guitars before
Class video as always, in addition to some sweet editing!
thanks!
it's beautiful! i'd like to see it in more than black and blue as color options... i didn't hear anything special tone-wise, but i'd be happy to own one.... thanks for the review
cheers!
First person every to lay down a cloth to protect the finsh
I bought one and I love it
Congrats!
I have 4 paranormals now, offset telecaster, toronado, Nashville Stratocaster, and most recent the stratosonic.. excellent guitars for little coin.
Les Paul scale length but does not sound like one, the pick up are ok, but not great. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Johnny Five!!!
So when you're playing, the pot screams "Need more input!! I need input!!"
Thanks for the review. Seems a bit bright for me. I wish it came in other colors beside blue and black
sweet! i really want this, and supersonic, and the cheap hh mustang
and a jag, i haven't decided which one yet :D
omg this is the coolest shit I've ever seen from sqier
squier*
There Is The Squier Jazzmaster J Mascis 😉
What a review, really nice. Thanks for this, I‘m going to buy the black one! :D
I want it, love the colour and shape.
Buying one of these on the basis of your review Landon. I like what you're doing.
Hope you enjoy it!
Did you notice if the pots were 500k or 250k? Thanks for the unbiased review.
I couldn't tell from looking at them. cheers
The President's Choice of pickup hahaha mainly Canucks will get that one. I like how you always include at least one weird reference per video! Then you topped it up with Johnny5 then Laurel and Yanni. But Nice sounding Squier and the look is killer!
Absolutely beautiful guitar however I just can’t warm up to the tortoise shell pick guard...3 or 4 ply black with white would be my choice.
This, any tort guard is an immediate turn off.
I think they sound fantastic, I'm glad they stayed true to the correct pickup voicing for these guitars.
cool thanks for the background on the pickups!
My next buy for sure. It will look gorgeous on my brand new rhodamine guitars wall... 😁😁😁
Rock on!
Super cool guitar man. Have a wonderful day.
👍😊
Hi! Thanks for the overview!
No problem!
thank you for making these deep dive reviews. I just broke the tip of the toggle switch on my Toronado, and I could use your video to see which new toggle switch to buy at 7:11 👍
Glad I could help!
Was searching what it looks like under the pickguard. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
I played a Tornado( long A) and I liked it! I don’t know if I’ll like the Tornado (short A ah sound)!
Great review Landon!!!👍
Has any channel taken your Squier stagemaster yet?
Seth EinSteiner Yes! Phillip McKnight!
Looks good though not sure about the scratch plate colour.
It would look way better with a white or black pick guard. I hate the pepperoni pick guards
Yes, brown really doesn't go with blue. White or cream would look great
