I got the wrong date for end of British Summer time... we have another couple of weeks so clocks in fact go back on 27th Oct so ignore my error at end of this film we are here same time next week. Cheers!

Are the $250 "Chibson" guitars on TEMU any good? They have some good looking LP and SG set neck guitars that look like the work or some one over in China who make those higher end epiphones.

I love inexpensive guitar, I love expensive guitars also.
My favorite pastime is taking a cheap guitar and investing as much time as required to make them play and feel like a Pro level instrument.
In most cases it can be done, it just takes time. And seeing how my hobby is working on guitars, it all comes together nicely.
      Thanks for the great content.

Colin, I have to repeat myself...you and I are so like minded, you often take the words out of my mouth. Why do I have to buy guitars...because I'm an addict. I don't even know how to play the bloody things and I have 13 of them. I can't help it. So, I share that sentiment with you and it's OK.
I bought the HB telecaster used for 80 Euros. I put locking tuners on it and put in Nocaster pickups. I think all total, I have 220 Euros into that guitar and it's flawless. I really enjoy that guitar. I love cheap guitars because I like to mod them. They impress me so much for being under 200 bucks and the result of a mod is very rewarding. You keep buying what your heart tells you to buy. I'll watch you review a cigar box guitar if you do one. I'll watch you do a 149,000 Euro Martin if you do one. It's not the price, it's the fun. Deep Purple wrote a song with the lyrics, it's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase. Keep buying, keep selling. HAVE FUN. I'm here with you no matter how much you invest in a guitar. Rock on!!

I caught more than Covid during the Plandemic....went from 4-5 guitars to over 20...have bought/sold about 10 also since 2020...including making my harem 50% Telecasters as of late. Love Tele's....a budget Tele with boutique pups can best any Strat at any price range.

@lazvt8469 must have been something in the air in 2020. That's when it all started for me. Bought a guitar and watched videos on how to play it. Self taught. Still don't know what I'm doing but buying more and more seems to come from long covid 😂

Harley Benton is the very definition of “value overload”. I have a HB tele and I love it. I have Gibson’s, and Fenders also. HB still gets plenty of play time 🎸

@Dragon_rls HB still has an inconsistency problem. I've gotten poor quality ones and Thomann always makes replacement easy.

I bought two of these. The butterscotch blonde which got modded into a Keith Richards tele wannabe (5 strings tuned to open G) and the other was the white Esquire version with the single bridge humbucker which got modded into a Cabronita style tele with a mint pick guard (Yes, the single pickup versions are routed for a neck humbucker under the pick guard). They sound amazing, play great and are easily my favourite guitars right now.

Have to say, I adore these Squier Sonics. I think they are a step up from the previous Bullet series. With a few minor differences, they are truly Fenders. This one sounds and looks amazing. They are getting $199 USD here in the States. I'd say well worth it.

It's a strange occurrence to me that not everyone watches these videos on their tv. I put you up on my 4k tv every week, but I guess that's an affordance of having a nice tv and home internet. I even invested in a Roku Streambar to get improved audio over our tv speakers. Only watching on mobile or laptops wouldn't do your videos justice. 👍

Budget guitar still using pretty much the same CNC machines which creates identical products. I get budget guitar with the right balance, weight and neck comfort (Jet js300). Then upgrade with higher quality loaded pickguard. Then you have a very good guitar to play in gigs.

Makes me remember the instruments I started with, warped necks, rusty strings….and hours invested daily to learn. Today’s “beginners” don’t need to suffer that impedance with genuine opportunity to experience the various “shapes” that inspire live music performance. That’s brilliant I think 🤤

Great review as usual Colin. No bull, down to earth and no sponsors to please. Love the way your videos seem so natural, no retakes when you get a word wrong. Bought my first electric guitar following one of your reviews and very happy with it.
I enjoy your playing style and sounds you create. I see you don`t use a huge amount of pedals and have your regular favourites. As a newbie to guitars could you do a review/talk through of what pedals you use and how you use them, for example do you use them individually or two together to create that sound.

I used to buy a Harley Benton every month but since the cost of living crisis I have wound it in a bit, I only buy one every three months or so now.
Squier have definitely upped their game as the 2000-2010 Bullets were terrible and that's the last thing a learner needs, it could put them off learning guitar for life, and the chance of flogging them a high end Fender further down the line to boot!

I recently tried out an Affinity Tele at a music store because I had some time to kill & I knew the staff wouldn't bug me while using it.
Then I found myself actually liking it a whole lot, especially the "gut cut" & the sound of the ceramic pups. The dark sunburst finish was attractive & unique.
So I surprised myself & bought a Squier Affinity!

The fret sprouts on mine were really bad but I can fix that... All I had to do was tune mine up and it was ready to go... It's been 3 days now and I haven't had to touch the tuners at all and the string it came with are pretty good... I watched a lot of reviews on this and yours is the best one I've seen .. I got a budget Strat over a year ago, it was a bit of a lemon and I dug into it a few days ago and discovered the 5-way switch had several bridges that were clearly unintentional. When I first got it I wanted to upgrade a few things and never really tried playing it, so after replacing the tuners with locking Gotohs I restrung it and had horrible hum, it wasn't a shielding issue, just a crappy solder job and slack QA. It works great now, I used to rag on Squire every chance I got, but I feel different now. The fix was so easy to do, just cut the bridge and perfect sound. Mine is a HSS, I only like the humbucker. Having said all that I would like to get a Telecaster now, maybe a slight upgrade over the base model.

Their Strat copy didn't impress me much but their 335 copy has fooled a number of Gibson owners, both for playability and sound. I think Anderton's has the distribution for the UK.

Lovely little vehicle for modding, this. I'd have butterscotch one, slap an Iron Gear Tele set and some open back Wilkinson tuners on it. Alternatively, with a bit more effort, you could "Esquire" it with a new pick/scratch guard...

I love Squier for their inexpensive paranormal range the best. I have a bunch of their normal ranges as well, but the paranormal is just the most fun for me.
Looking forward to the inexpensive Tele shootout.

Another great video Colin, i thought the Tele sounded fabulous, i can hardly believe its only £149. You have given me GAS for one.
Easy job to buy a set of ferrels and drill the body on a drill press to give a string through, and put a set of vintage sounding pickups in.
Looking forward to the budget tele shootout. Thanks for posting.

You have your work cut out for you with the budget tele review. I have seen all of them and they are all playable and all look great. I think it will really come down to features like string-through body, traditional bride, tuners, roasted maple neck, etc. For me, it would be what is the best upgrade platform for the price and how it looks/feels to the player. I am looking forward to your review.

@The Guitaristas Hi Colin!!! I've got the black guard butterscotch and yeah...fantastic neck!!! Think I like it more than my late 80's American Standard Strat neck!!! Not sure if you mentioned that the body on these squires is a bit thinner that on a proper tele. I believe on the order of 1/4 inch or so.....thanks for another great video and keep crackin on!!!

Thanks for another enjoyable episode... and... 'this' Squier Sonic Telecaster... is a most acceptable guitar... and... all very well comparing 'expensive' as opposed to 'cheaper'... but "Value-for-money" is rewarding... Squire's are a favorite every time and will be interesting to see how this one holds up against it's competitors ?????? Am also thinking (?) Though nothing wrong with the tone that I can detect (?) this Telecaster is perfect for a neck upgrade if you were so inclined... (Your magic toolbox ?)... and Colin... Sometime in the NOT to distant future (Ha Ha... perhaps Christmas time ?) am sure many would like to know how the re-fretting went on the '72 Gibson "Holy Grail" ? and what your thoughts are... Good Cheer for a great week !

Colin, the reason you love cheap guitars is that they are built pretty good nowadays AND you're playing through an amazing amplifier ! Cheap guitar + good amp and you've got it made, but even a good guitar through a cheap amp is less than ideal. It also helps that you can play quite well and you make the demos very enjoyable.

Look forward to the review of the tele’s personally before I hear your review I’d only consider the rosewood one just because there isn’t a medium price one I’d really love a American or Japanese version but they’re so expensive.

I have one of these, it's great - in fact it has become one of my favourites. I did swap out the black pickguard for a cream one, which I think looks much classier.
Tele neck pickups are supposed to be darker/mellower for jazzier tones, I don't understand why people always seems to complain about that. Remember, they are encased in a chromed brass cover.
One more point, there are no 'cheap' guitars these days - only low-cost guitars. ;)
My only gripe is the top-loading bridge, it's a bit fiddly to restring. BTW: There's two layers of plastic on the pickguard, which seems to be standard these days.

Great video as always. Squire is my favourite among affordable teles. It just looks great and sounds good enough. It's already got shielding, which is rare for the price, and other models of "cheap teles competition)" did not have. I own a Squire Paranormal Offset Tele, which is of highest price range for Squire and cavities were not shielded on it. The biggest downside of this one in my opinion is that it has top loaded bridge, but for the price it is more than acceptable.

Pickups are really close in construction to JJ's Simulcaster t-bar P90s, other than the machine wind on yours they are likely flavored in that direction.
JJ's use P90 screw pole peices, a steel keeper and C8 magnets. Neck has an open top nickel steel shield. Poles are grounded, no back plate on either bridge or neck. They sound great for hybrid pickups. And they're just less than twice the money as this red Tele...

I am always surprised at how, in some cases, Squier and Epiphone, can make el cheapos that actually sound good and are fun to play. I had a Squier Affinity HSS Strat that was a gem and also a Squier 70s Vintage Modified SSS Strat that punched way above its weight…and at 61 now I regret letting the two of them go as I am always trading, selling etc and sometimes the excitement of something different to play usurps common sense…lol…great vid as always Mate and at our age clocks go way too fast. 😂
