  • Herd immunity works for vaccinations as it does Facebook share fact checking. Dr. Lindsay Diamond discusses the risk about the vaccination choice that parents face. What is risk and what does community do to our choices?
Lindsay Diamond, Ph.D. is a recovering molecular biologist who, despite turning in her badge and pipette gun, has a passion for making science accessible and approachable. This fervor carries over into her post-research life as the Director of Education at SparkFun Electronics, where her team designs curricula and travels the country providing professional development to educators looking to introduce science, technology and the maker movement to their students.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

venko ivanov the year before the vaccine in the UK 51 people died. Down from a peak of 1139 dead in 1940 something. It was down over 95% before the vaccine came out. Deaths from all recorded vaccine injuries in 2018 to 2019 was 445 and 1295 permanent paralysis. This is recorded at VAERS and they are estimated to only get 5-10% of the real amount of injuries 👍🏼

I totally agreed with what she said and Vaccination is very important, but there is still one point missing, that is from the perspective of a parent in that maybe 1% allergies reactive group, which she mentioned the chances of getting car incident might be higher than getting jab injuries. Its not about the chances, it is about getting the jab injuries at this point of time vs covid in some point of time further down. Weighing risks as a 3rd party POV is always easier said than done, now imagine you the parent and so unlucky that the kid got jab injury, do you think the parent regretted their decision? But if they don't proceed with Vax and the kid died from Covid, do you think they will regret their decision too? This is what is troubling parents. To jab or not jab also is a risk.
The only way is to reduce the jab injury to the safest state meaning at least not life threatening, minimum long term effect, and mostly can be recovered, then the taking the jab looks worth the risk.

I watched her TED talk almost 4 years ago...I was disappointed then and just gave it/her a thumbs down...Today I am replying with our family's tragic story...First, I am an M.D.....My wife was an R.N.....My 2 brothers were M.D.'s....My mother and sister were both R.N.'s....We were all ''pro-vaccines''...We were all taught to give vaccines and take all of our vaccines...The 6 of us were responsible for having 100,000 patients vaccinated...About 35 years ago our pediatrician told us we must vaccinate our baby with 4 vaccines on the same day....My precocious, active, creative, talkative, running, coloring, loving 2-year-old son was injured by his 4 vaccines starting that night...The doctor said it was NOT from the vaccines...But, I was an eye-witness to that as his parent..My baby brother ( the M.D. ) died from paralysis (Guillain-Barre) after his flu shot ...The doctors said it was NOT from the flu vaccine shot...The US government's Vaccine Court disagreed and said he died from flu vaccine paralysis and paid off the family...and Folks, my mother was an R.N. who was the Head Nurse and ran the largest ER in our medical center...They had her take 8-9 vaccines to ''catch-up'' with the ''updated'' CDC schedule to keep her job...She got severe ''brain fog'' withing days, then lost her ability to dial her phone or push the elevator buttons or start her car ...She went into diapers and then hospitalized and died a terrible, tragic death drooling and unable to walk, talk, eat or recognized any of her family...None of the specialists and consults could tell her or us what ''just happened'' but the told us it was ''NOT'' from those vaccines....It was called the ''worst case of aggressive dementia of unknown cause the doctors had ever seen''....Folks what killed our mother just weeks after her vaccines were all from her fatal doses of neurotoxic aluminum and mercury from those vaccines..She left behind her husband, 5 children, 4 grandchildren, and now 7 great grandchildren... I started a FB site called ''Vaccine Support Group'' in their name..Will they shut this site down next...Check it out.....Maybe today...

We just need time. Here are corrections to a sampling of Aristotle’s more unfortunate mistakes, mistakes that for all too many years steered science down any number of blind alleys:
Copernicus and Kepler established that the earth orbits the sun - Aristotle was wrong when he said the sun orbits the earth.
Galileo discovered satellites orbiting Jupiter, proving that everything in the heavens does not orbit the earth - Aristotle was wrong when he said everything in the heavens orbits the earth.
Galileo’s telescope clearly showed mountains and craters on the moon, proving that the moon is far from perfect - Aristotle was wrong when he said the heavens are perfect.
Galileo’s experiments proved that the rate at which something falls to earth does not depend on its mass - Aristotle was wrong when he said heavier objects fall to the earth faster than lighter ones.
Galileo discovered that things keep moving in a straight line at uniform speed unless a force causes them to do otherwise. Aristotle was wrong when he said things only keep moving if you keep applying a force to them.

The American polio mythology: Do you have any idea why it took 1.8 million kids to test the vaccine? It took that many kids because polio was rare. The idea that it was some major killer was the work of the March of Dimes organization, which had just started using modern marketing techniques in the field of fund raising.
"Well, first of all, the polio study was the most elaborate trial that was ever done, and you had to do it that way because polio was very scarce."
    - Paul Meier, who pushed science to use randomization during clinical trials and a statistician for the 1954 Salk polio vaccine trials

Polio was not rare. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and heard many, many adults testify of how horrible the epidemics were, and how many of their friends and relatives were taken down by it. Nobody hesitated to get the vaccine for their children when it became available. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was paralyzed from Polio.

+Alannah May .. I'm not sure but I think he was paralyzed by the vaccine, as many were. It was removed because Polio from vaccine was happening at much higher rates than coming naturally. Also, usually it's a lab created version, and not wild polio. Remember these were live viruses injected. They tried different ways to make vaccine safer, like sugar cubes,,but even those were taken off market. now it's MMR. And strange serious paralysis is happening to children now who received MMR. There's been news stories,,yet they're not linking it!

Polio spreads from the toxic pesticide, more affected kids were from the farm, people from the city didn't get polio only few cases. Today the 64 cases in the last 40 years was from kids that were vaccinated against polio.
Pesticide-contaminated milk also responsible for polio outbreaks
Many people during the 1950s became ill as a result of pesticide-contaminated milk, much of which ended up having to be quietly pulled from store shelves in subsequent years. This contaminated milk was also known to be a primary carrier of polio, and was directly responsible for spreading the disease until the contaminating pesticides were eventually phased out, and the milk supply effectively remediated.

Why do parents that immunize their children are the most worried about spreading diseases? If your child is vaccinated & “protected” then you shouldn’t be worried about children who aren’t vaccinated. Yet they are always judging. Everyone should have the freedom to do what’s right for their families. You believe in vaccines cool. You don’t believe in vaccines cool to each its own.

  • @MrCinagro

Well done talk, thank you for pulling this line of thought together so cogently - and, it seems, without antagonizing the audience.
Your talk builds up to the idea that we are a community responsible for each member’s well-being, and that as a group we need 95% immunity to communicable diseases like measles to avoid future epidemics. The epidemics are a public health concern because some individuals will suffer permanent long term harm (or death) from the disease.
Your talk ends with a brief statement of the need to allow for 5% non-compliance with mandatory vaccinations because some people are immune compromised (typically cancer patients, the gravely ill, or those with chronic auto-immune conditions). I wish your talk had started with this thought, rather than ended with it as an aside.
The fact remains that the National Institutes of Health acknowledges that one in one million doses of vaccine result in a severe adverse effect. You can look at this from two ways. As you showed, each child receives about fifty different vaccines early in life. Thus using the official medical statistics, one in 20,000 children will be hurt by vaccines. (Or for the statisticians out there, one single unfortunate child might be hurt 50 times by vaccines before she is ten.) Either way, this is the reality of herd immunity: it requires a sacrifice of a small randomly selected number of our children to benefit of everyone else.
I’ll not discuss the religious overtones here. Nor will I discuss the endless number of books and movies that have taken up the theme of intentional sacrifice of children. Suffice to say, these themes are deeply rooted in the human experience. These visceral human emotional patterns are also where the Science and Public Health seem to have a permanent blind spot
The Bethesda Effect, named after the location of the headquarters of the National Institutes of Health, is what I call this conundrum caused by this blind spot. From on high in Bethesda, the math is clear. The rare “adverse events” cause by vaccines are overwhelmingly offset by the benefit to the larger community. So make a rule, pass a law, force vaccines on every family, create the PowerPoint trumpeting our success.
But the Bethesda Effect requires us to depersonalize those “adverse events”. Those are the beloved, thriving babies and toddlers of real families. The Bethesda Effect allows us to look into the wide end of the telescope and imagine those injured children are so tiny and far away they don’t really matter. It’s just one in a million. Who cares?
For those tiny far away parents, the “adverse effect” is their robust, active, engage child who is now sick, listless and unresponsive. They are told it’s not Thimerosal, so don’t worry. They are told it’s not Zinc, so don’t’ worry. They are told there is no link between autism and vaccines, so don’t worry. Don’t fear science. Don’t fear vaccinations. None of your child’s symptoms can be linked to her vaccinations.
Right there is where your next TEDx Talk needs to begin. As a community (or a “herd” to use the analogy popular in Bethesda) we are sacrificing the well-being of these families a second time. Own the analogy if you are going to use it: herds marginalize and sacrifice the weak by ostracizing them and putting them at the highest risk for predators. By not answering the question, Why Is My Child Sick? we are in fact doing the same thing.
The pharmaceutical industry and public health authorities have intentionally failed to address this question: Why Is My Child Sick After Being Given a Vaccination? Instead of seeking answers, we tell them it’s mere coincidence (in other words, you child was about to suddenly lapse into permanent autism anyway). We tell them it wasn’t zinc or Thimerosal, or mercury. So it's ok.
Because we fail to answer the question, the question remains unanswered. To make matters worse, we have removed all incentive to answer these questions. Vaccine manufacturers have complete immunity from liability for their products. Families of damaged children are paid off with million dollar settlements and their children warehoused on life support at taxpayer expense. This is the dark consequence of the Bethesda Effect. If you have not spoken to these families, it's heartbreaking.
If you are one of these families, and the scientific community has forsaken you, then yes, you look for answers on your own. You propose theories, you try to test them, you cooperate with your peer families across the globe to gather data. You do Science as best you can. And yet “real” scientists -- looking into the big end of the telescope in Bethesda -- use their considerable clout to mock your honest efforts.
What Bethesda needs to do is pick up where your TEDx talk left off. If 5% of the population is more susceptible to severe adverse effects from vaccinations, then it behooves us to find out who makes up that 5%. That 1 in a million vaccinations causes harm is nothing to brag about. We should move that to 1 in ten million - or even fewer.
The problem is self-evident. How do we know if an otherwise healthy baby is in the 5%? You don’t. At least not yet. If you are a vaccine maker or public health authority, you don’t even want to acknowledge this question. Because in doing so, you have to acknowledge deep in your heart the very real risk that your child, and not someone else’s, will become the next "adverse event".
So let’s move this conversation forward. We know statistically what is NOT likely hurting our children. That's what science does best. But we don’t know what is hurting them.
Instead of berating and blaming the bereaved, we should redouble our efforts to explain adverse events. We should develop a system to help identify ALL at risk people. We should make the risk of herd vaccinations really remote, not just statistically acceptable.

It never mocked anyone and your math and number of vaccines is way off. Further, the risk for MMR is 1 in a million chance but the risk for other ones such as HPV is closer to 1 in 40 million. None of that matters though because if you ever had taken a statistics course then you'd understand that each vaccine is mutually exclusive and independent and thus you cannot do any kind of overall statistic on risk because it would make no sense; it's like saying that if you take 5 apples and six oranges, how many pancakes do you have? Makes no sense.
There's nothing lazy about calling out your lies, bad math, bad statistics, pseudoscience, anecdotal stories, and lack of any semblance of evidence to support your wild and crazy conspiracy theories.

@DM584 He did not fabricate data. A vile reporter made that story up and HE was found out and didn't care that he had slandered a doctor for a story. Dr. Wakefield has been vindicated many times over for his conclusions. There is no safe vaccine. I am a scientist , a researcher, a compiler and I have more hours studying vaccines that most medical doctors and all of the people with pro-vaccine comments here.

    • @TheWadetube
      @TheWadetube 5 років тому +1

@DM584 The reporter's name was Deer and he was caught as another person commented below me stated. Your predjudice against Wakefield is noted, but you do not understand what he was doing, he was investigating a link between gastrointestinal issues in autistic children and discovered too much conicidence and asked for a specialist to help him His work has been vindicated many times over as I have posted here.
I do research and compile the information and my sources ARE PhDs in immunology among other Nurologists and professors in microbiology and chemistry. Most medical doctors only spend a few hours in college studying vaccines. They only get the basics and they do not know the dangers of vaccines because that is not something the pharmaceutical companies teach, nor do they teach the long history of vaccine fraud, vaccine damage, death and the plague that are vaccines.
I have a comprehensive database that includes those rare doctors who HAVE studied the dangers of vaccines. IF an Immunologist is promoting vaccines it is for money, not science. Doctors are not experts on vaccines. An agent from the Drug company gives them custom pamphlets to use to sell drugs and vaccines.
The drug companies do not do proper tests to verify that a vaccine works or that it is safe compared to nonvaccinated kids. Other countries have done that study and found that vaccinated kids are 5 times less healthy than non vaccinated kids. If you want, I can link the study to you but not if you aren't interested in learning the truth.

Measles was never a risk to her child unless malnourished or vitamin-A deficient -- not in the country where she lives and not in this age. She presented over-simplified view on the problem not mentioning destruction of passive immunity and short duration of vaccine protection. Sad how she talks about risk instead of assessing degree of certain damage. Finally when talking about alleged connection between autism and vaccination it is worth remembering that there are no other plausible explanations.
