Totally agree. Niue has the best taro in the world and it is dangerous eating takihi with a knife! lol Thank you Shimpal for sharing this treasure with us. Fakaue lahi!
Went to Niue for a one week meeting (because there was only one flight a week back in those days). Ate takihi at that meeting for morning tea, lunch, dinner along with the roasted pig, coconut crab, lobsters, fish and chicken. I gained 10kg in weight when I went back home. I think it was the takihi. In Samoa, we had a similar dish but along with most traditional Samoan foods, it has been lost to time unfortunately, although the name that my grandfather told me for the same dish, it sounded very much like takihi, although in Samoan there is no 'H' sounding word. So I think it was, in approximation, in Samoan language, takihi was kakisi, which makes sense, when you was think about it, like its sweet so when you go for it it's like saying to your girlfriends, aumai se kakisi, auoi!
Definitely miss my dad's cooking and enjoyed your video. Appreciated you eating island styles as my dad would do and cooking real niuean styles with so much love for cooking umu. So grateful for video 😍
In png we also make that with slice or grated sweet potato , yam and casava as well.Even put taro or aibika/Island cabbage in between the layers as well.Yummy
🤣🤣🤣 eating with the knife, island way....I love this when the Niuens make it for international night at church...now I know how it's made, it's beautiful 😍
Island food is the best, whether it's Polynesia,Melanesia or Micronesia. I come from the South Western Pacific and we have different colour taro. Purple, yellow, white, dark purple, purple and white, yellow and white and orange . Thank you for sharing your beautiful tasty recipe,I will definitely try it out
Fascinating! And that’s the guy who eats with a knife! 😆😁 Niuean Shimpal Lelisi’s trademark. I didn’t realize he was the same one I saw earlier on how to cook taro until he started tasting the food! Funny!
Looks nice, never tasted that before. PS, in the Cooks we have all sorts of taro. Pink, yellow, grey and dark grey which is the nicest as well as the yellow ones. And the pink Taro comes from Niue.
Fantastic cooking demonstration, thanks. My neighbour in Grey Lynn, Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa NZ was telling everyone on fb he was having takihi for breakfast. So I googled and found this great video. Shared it world-wide. Could start a takihi frenzy everywhere? Who knows, lol.
Bula vinaka ma brother, thanks for sharing your recipe, I will tried it one day, but nothing beat the smell n taste of our traditional cooking...the lovo or umu....god bless
If i were to make this, Which i am how long do i keep in a conventional oven and what degree/temperature do i set the heat? Pls and Thank you in advance.
Bro you need your own program. Cooking, sports, music, arts, tourism (get to travel) News and culture from Niue. Anything Bro your O for owesome, like our brother David. Your'd be an excellent front man, host , whatever! Bro. you got naturel, friendly vibe, can connect wif us. All da best bro. Maori Boy westie. GO HARD!!!
OMG ur beautiful n ur food it's sad bkuz my beautiful mom Fenika {RIJ} is niue but I don't know who her father is NOTHIING I was either 2 young or didn't pay attention when she spoke of him, all I remember is her telling us that she went 2 NIue with my oldest brotha n oldest sista 2 visit her father n family n how beautiful , kind, n loving they were 2 them, n I remember 1 time we were shopping @ a samoan market in Carson n this handsum man said hi 2 my mom n they started talking only it wasn't Samoan I kept listening n I swear I did not understand anything she was saying {me faikakala lol} n boy this man must of been flirting with my mom bkuz she was giggling n laughing {mom kalakiki} lol but it was a beautiful language , I really wish I knew something about her father or family names I wud luv 2 visit NIue n Samoan b4 Jesus takes me home !!!!!!!!
My parents went Niue last year and came back with heaps of yummy food made in the islands. Even though sucks that coconut crab is not aloud in NZ no mo😭 but the food I was looking forward to was takihi😍 my partner Samoan he never tasted takihi before till he had a taste.... he loved it😂 poor fing lol. I’m looking forward for some more island food this year when mum & dad goes back😍 hurry up November! 🙄😂
Per fortuna si tratta di un piatto vegano. Non oso immaginare se il tizio avesse preparato un piatto a base di carne, vista la sua aria truculenta. Costui mi fa davvero passare la voglia di mangiare.
Im sorry I have to disagree with you😬..Mangaia (an island in the Cook Islands) have the best taro, grown in the swamp as well as pa'i. Mangaia is also rocky with volcanic soil and we use volcanic rocks for our umu. The texture of taro grown in the swamp is different to taro grown in normal soil (pa'i). And we do have different kinds of taro, white, yellow, pink...we even have one we call mamio Niue...we also have a dish similar to the takihi (one of my favourites too) called roroi. It can be taro with coconut cream only, or a third ingredient can be added like pawpaw, kumara, ripe breadfruit and ripe bananas...😊.
Taro is Taro......taste the same......lets do something much useful like building a space program so we can send the taro to the Aliens............let them be the judge..
Totally agree. Niue has the best taro in the world and it is dangerous eating takihi with a knife! lol Thank you Shimpal for sharing this treasure with us. Fakaue lahi!
I've never heard of those ingredients. Makes me want to travel to every remote location in the world! I love culture!
You've never heard of coconuts and papaya?

Going to give this a try today! Substituting an electric oven for an umu, and canned coconut cream instead of fresh, due to geographic limitations :D
We make this in the UK, Little bit of Niue in England! but we have to use our conventional oven.....
