She was the perfect Mum for the tutorial. She was so sweet explained everything like as if you were a little kid in the kid in the kitchen watching mum make dinner. All the home feels :)
Fabulous. This video is how I was taught to cook Sapusui, when I was in my mid 20s, (I am 70yrs this Sept); by the mother of a Samoan boyfriend. I am Palangi, and have been making Sapusui since the 1970s! Many Samoan friends & family have praised my chop sui, & tell them how I was taught to cook this by an expert. Loved this video & the Samoan garlic & ginger crusher. LOL.
Love how this lady speaks, fluent English and easy instructions for me to follow. I tried making Sapasui and thank you, it was a hit with my family..xox
Samoan mother's. How grateful I am for having a Samoan mother. Their strong love for their kids, husband and family shows in their food. Rich, fulfilling and an endless supply like a buffet 😅. Their dedication to their kids is pure love. I look back at what my mom has done for me and just thank the almighty father in heaven he chose her to be my queen to worship. I cannot comprehend another being in her place. Forever thankful for my samoan mom and all Samoan mom's.
It's a Samoan dish that basically you can add just about anything. You can use chicken, beef, or pork, which ever meat you want. I've tasted one with pisupo in it, and it's tastes great. Some like vegetables in their sapasui, which is also very tasty. There is no right or wrong way to make sapasui, there are many variations of this dish. But they're all very good. Thank you Aunty for sharing, wish I had smell-a-vision!!!
@@tesstickle6035 no,sapasui is not an Asian dish..it was influenced by Chinese when they came to Samoa, and Samoans made their own version of chop suey..so it's actually not an Asian dish..Sapasui is a Samoan dish that was Chinese influenced..not the same thing my my guy 🤦🏻♀️.
@@sillau9 ‘Influenced’: Meaning it’s a take from an original Asian dish. A spin off in which we now consider this as a staple of one of our Islander dishes to date. It’s not like we had a widespread of plantations of vermicelli, garlic and ginger being made and grown in the ancient times that happen to magically appear. If that was the case: then it wouldn’t be just be Samoa, this would mean all of the islands across the Pacific and we would’ve had a plethora of other dishes out of these ingredients and far more relatable dishes. But we don’t. It wouldn’t have, because of the adaptation and climate in our Pacific islands and they’re not traditional Polynesian crops. Those were brought on our shores by the Chinese and then continued to grow and distribute throughout the island. So it’s in the recent past century, that this was introduced because of the Chinese in Samoa and in other neighbouring island countries. Sapasui wasn’t just the only spin-off dishes influenced from them and carried on, however they are more popular in other island nations than in Samoa. So yeah…if it wasn’t for the Chinese coming to our shores. We wouldn’t have Sapasui as an island dish today.
Faafetai lava mo lenei recipe! I have read a few comments pointing out the lack of vegies. I feel, that this wonderful lady is sharing her own take on this Samoan favourite, so it is crude to make remarks on the lack of certain ingredients, when it is definitely up to you to alter the recipe to your choosing.
My best friend in the whole world is Samoan, and Sapasui is the one thing he taught me to make that I make all the time. I love it! ♥ Thank you for sharing your recipe with us, Aunty! :) ♥
I cook my chop suey with Brisket.. my favourite... i slow cook the brisket... before i start to slow cook the brisket, i prep onions, garlic, ginger thyme or basil and brown sugar.. but what i do is cut the brisket up with fat on into small pieces. Heat up pot on a low to medium heat.. add oil... meat, thyme or basil and brown sugar for 35 mins I add onions, garlic and ginger etc...
my sapasui turned out a lot better after I watched your method. can be exactly the same ingredients but it's the way u cook it that makes it a gd sapasui. thank you for telling us your way :)
Yummmm 🥰😋😋 I’m East Timorese born in Sydney Australia, I grew up around a lot Samoan, Tongan and Fijian friends. I call them family because we all have similar foods that we were all raised with. Food brings culture and people together. Makes us feel united. I absolutely love this video, I am definitely going to try cooking chop sui 😍 thank you for the delicious recipe. 😋👌🏾 p.s I love how she uses her “Samoan crusher” 🙈
I grew up on Tongan Sapasui. Never had one without any vegetables in it but maybe that's where the two differ? A lot of cultures have some sort of variation of rice noodle stir fry. My mother would've seared the meat with matchstick carrots and celery. I remember always trying to get as many carrots as I could before getting smacked. 🤭 This looks good too! Best thing I love about Sapasui is how every aunty's Sapasui is different and good. Then I tried the Korean kind. Chap chae. Bigger noodles. Served cold. AWE Man! Never met a Sapasui I didn't like!
I was looking for some chopped up veggies as well. It's okay both ways, I've had them both styles (Tongan and Samoan) and prefer mine with veggies, it adds layers of flavor and doesn't compromise the sapasui flavor at all. To each their own and while her noodles are thicker than what I'm used to having, everyone makes it a little different. 🤤
I'm Samoan but nevet made sapasui in my life! Its so simple the way you did it and i will try it also with plenty of beef. I may add a little chopped carrots as well. To me beef is best! Malo lava! Mahalo nui loa!
I used to make chop suey when my Samoan husband was alive but havent made it for years.. now my son wants me to make a huge amount for fundraising. I found your video.. really good.. I learnt a few new things too.. eg.. soaking noodles in cold water, not hot water. great video.
Having grown up with making chop suey every Sunday for lunch, I thought the way I did it was the way everyone did it. It was only a few years ago that I saw how different my Aunty made hers, I was blown away that everybody has a different way of doing chop suey. Great tutorial and loved her humor 😀 👍👍👍
WOW she did a WONDERFUL and an EXCELLENT JOB!!! I have never made sapasui before and now after watching her video I'm going to make it tomorrow. She made it so easy to understand. She basically walked you through the whole thing. Out of the hundreds of Samoan cooking videos I've watched, this one is by far the BEST and my favorite!!! Fa'afetai fa'afetai fa'afetai tele lava!!!
Im a chef, i went to a friends 50th on the weekend and they had the most outstanding table of islander food. Had to try and replicate so fiund this video. Bloody awesome thank you so much
Made this for fathers day lunch today - as had been looking for a 'fool proof' recipe, substituted beef for chicken, and mannn it turned out amazing! All other attempts prior to this were flavourless and lacked 'love' LOL. Thank you so much for this recipe, it literally took me less than half an hour :) God Bless you all
I admire this beautiful mom and her style of cooking sapasui. At first I gasped at the soysauce volume but it looked wonderful in the end. I do 50/50 soy & oyster sauce and add cubed carrots, corn and peas. I will certainly give her method a go one day, and that garlic crusher is just awesome.
As a child living in Samoa for 3 years my mum would send me with 5 taka up too a beautiful lady called Elaine Hawkins who lived up the top of centipede Alley she would then call and we would go pick up the best sapasui with cooked taro for dinner. I can still taste it now sitting on my sofa in London 40 years later x Thank you for this recipe I cannot wait to make it.
Made this for dinner. Family absolutely loved it and I have the fussiest kids you could ever meet. Thankyou for your beautiful recipe. Look forward to more.
It reminds me how my dear dad made our Sapasui when I was a child. He used the bottle to bash his garlics like this lady here and the chunky garlic was always soft to eat in the Sapasui. Great job 👍🏼👍🏼
I had never made chop suey in my life lol but I made a big pot of chop suey for my grandma's funeral, I just made it from just how I saw her make it and everyone was so shocked because it came out sooo GOOD!!!!! LOL 😗😗😗😗 I was shocked myself lol I make mine with pisupo (corned beef ) or chopped meat like this, your chop suey looks Delicious!!!
I've made Sapasui and Chop Suey my entire life, it has been and continues to be a favourite in my home. Although my family loves my cooking and the cooking of my father who taught me, I'm always looking to improve my recipe and technique. Thank you for this video, what a joy to watch, I definitely picked up some tips 😉😁👍
OMG. This is so easy and delicious to make. I made it for the first time and you know its good when your kids will eat it. I alternated with standard soy sauce and sweet soy sauce. Thanks for posting this video x
I'm Māori but my sister married a Samoan so since I was about 11 years old ive been eating Sapasui and only recently decided to learn how to cook it, Im almost there, I use 2 different types of Soy sauce, ginger, garlic, onion, mixed veg, chicken and beef, I also over season the meat with chicken & beef stock powder, garlic & ginger salt, but I needed to get the consistency and texture right and that dark brown colour which Im.prettt sure I'll get right after watching this.

I have always been interested in making this dish myself as an adult and you have made it look so easy. I can't wait to try this out. thank you so much for posting!!
Mushroom soy is also very nice. Some people use pork. Mum always used beef, but recently I use minced meat for my elderly dad and his lack of teeth, it's his favorite dish as well as chow mein, he is Irish but loves everything Samoan

Thankyou my mom made chop suey, and it was a little different she used Chinese thin noodles, and she, was a great cook. I am going to to try it how you made it . Looks great!
Yuuummm! I watched this video, then got MEGA hungry for chop suey (currently 38+ weeks pregnant!) Sooo I went & bought the ingredients to make some right now!! Lol
This what happens when you dont pay attention to when you mom cooks.... You end up looking for tutorials hahah. Love the video 👌🏾👌🏾
