You can actually use paper currency as a foreigner in the DPRK. However, most of the time when you get there, you can get a local debit card and convert your Euro/USD/whatever, which is what most people do, and is accepted in just about every shop in Pyongyang.
Fun fact: The DPRK used to issue different paper notes to visitors and tourists. Visitor notes from fellow Communist countries were marked red, and visitor notes for people from capitalist countries were marked blue/green

I recently bought an assortment of banknotes on eBay, which arrived yesterday. Interesting stuff in there. Found some meant for use by the British Royal Army, found some MMM bond notes from a Russian Ponzi scheme, and some notes from countries that don't exist anymore. Once I saw the North Korean Won banknotes, my immediate thought was, "How did this get through US Customs?"
North Korean Banknotes are easy to get, customs probably do not care.

Yes they do, North Korean banknotes have had watermarks since 1992, if there are none, then I would questions the authenticity.

These ones are technically not real North Korean money. I know this because I actually own a couple of them, and the ones here are actually a specimen version. If you notice, all the banknotes' serial numbers are all zeroes

I recently bought the 200, 500 and 1000 won commemorates the 70th anniversary of DPRK. They aren't specimens. Are these minted in China or NK? I posted this on quora and there were mixed opinions, so thought of asking the expert himself
From what I know, North Korea mints and prints their own currency. They also counterfeit alot of foreign currencies as well.

Where there are people have, there is a basic market.
The North Korean banknotes look more modern and nicer than the South Korean won.
The current South Korean banknotes are nice.

@@Gumardee_coins_and_banknotes I really need to look for them I love coins and other types of souvenirs that wouldn't exist in the world we have but DPRK is different not in bad or good way but just different and we think alike if it comes to names I'm a historian and I always try to pronounce names of some artist correctly and I'm obsessed with languages and it wasn't compliment I'm just bluntly stating the fact that I liked it and it was real good and you deserve attention you get or even more who knows
