Gav was my professor at CCAD, an art school. I've always seen him draw these characters on Facebook, but I actually had no idea he made a pilot with them for cartoon network back in the day 😱 so cool!! Looking back, I vaguely remember it from childhood. It's a great short and Gav was an amazing and kind hearted professor. I'm so glad this is up for people to be introduced to year after year :)
@GavriloGnatovich They should have still picked it Sheep In The Big City, Time Squad, Robot Jones and Megas XLR never won but still became their own full length series.
I'm sharing this, because I voted for Longhair and Doubledome to become a series in the Big Pick 2000. Of course, Billy and Mandy turned out very funny and successful as a series, but its pilot submitted for the contest wasn't even funny. Good Wheel Hunting had me in tears when I first saw it at 9-10 years old. Doubledome made the show for me.
Thanks for the support, I hope that I will be doing a third short in the near future, after I finish a graphic novel of these guys. Just can't let it go.
Have not seen this for 15 years. The only thing I remembered was Doubledome saying "Ya know I think I'm gonna bruise after this next one". Great episode.
Looking back this is perhaps the most unique animation I've seen on Cartoon Network ever. It has a very disntictive style, the character designs are unlike anything I've seen from the company and the humor was spot on. I didn't understand the concept of "pilots" back in my stupid youth, but I always wondered why we only had TWO Double Dome and Longhair episodes (Called "Pelo Largo y Sin Cerebro" on my country)

This was hard to find cause I forgot the names so I searched "caveman cartoon" "what a cartoon show" and last was "top knot and chrome dome" (was so close on that one).
That was actually really nice of the Neanderthals to bring back fruit even if the fruit tasted like garbage the fact they did that at all is very considerate of them
Well, I agree. However, it's not just the cartoon per se, but rather the writers who give the cartoon more authenticity, originality, flavor, structure, and appeal. Like the original Teen Titans, and not those horrid abominations that the network dared to pass off as the next best thing.
Holy crap, I remember voting for this when I was like 12 or something. I cried laughing at this as a kid. Man, it's surreal to see this again as an adult. Man, how'd this get beat out?
There is an interesting dynamic here when it comes to Longhair and Doubledome. Normally Doubledome would be the problem character. Constantly wrecking Longhair's plans or just being a general nuisance, but instead we have two characters that work well together and play off together really well. They are both intelligent in their own way without outshining each other. I didn't get annoyed by the obviously less intelligent character being on screen. Its honestly an achievement how well it works and the biggest foils are the neanderthals which gives our two main characters more room as well... characters. Both characters are smart but stupid in their own way and as a result are completely enjoyable as characters. As crazy as this might sound if cartoon network did pick this up. I feel it would be really chopped down to hell and back and we'd see them devolve into a flanderization of their worst traits with cartoon network inevitability giving Doubledome his own show only to put it in an completely inappropriate timeslot. There are avenues today to see these characters come to live, and I would like to see them get their own series one day. Online, Netflix, etc etc. So many more options to bring this idea to life. I am optimistic that it can happen one day in the future.

I was maybe 8 when I saw this when they were doing the campaign for the next cartoon series on CN. I wanted this to win over Billy and Mandy so badly that I was genuinely mad when they greenlit Grim Adventures.
One of the most watched cartoons of all time. Released in the 2000s by Hanna-Barbera Productions. It won a award for most watched cartoon of the 2000s. I'd consider keeping one of my Blu-ray Discs (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) only to buy a SD card containing the Longhair and Doubledome short cartoons (including "Good Wheel Hunting") from someone else.
Weirdly enough, I have a distinct memory of Cartoon Network announcing this show won that year's contest. Maybe that's an imaginary memory or maybe they had one hiccup in playing the footage, I don't know, but it's been bugging the crap out of me for years.

@MJTRadio Actually, the announcement of it winning leaked a few places online before the winners were to be announced on TV. Yeah, this would have made for a better series than "Billy and Mandy". "Billy and Mandy" has that kind of "Fairly Odd Parents" humor and animation which wears thin really fast. I didn't like what that series became. But I love how artistic the animation is in this short. It has both a prehistoric and a more modern Picasso feel to it. The Summer Resort games brought me here to see this again.

they should continue making episodes of this, its too damn funny not to continue, my favorite joke in this episode is "lets call it a WHHHEEEEEEEEE" XD
Mr. Gnatovich, I think there's at least three reasons why your creation Longhair and Doubledome didn't get picked up as an animated series. This is a great show with a distinct style and humor, no doubt about that. But the first reason is that the two main characters' attitudes, personalities and chemistry seem like caveman versions of Ren & Stimpy or Pinky and The Brain. Second reason, because this was set in the Stone Age with no "Bamboo Technology"-the kind of stick and stone tech we've see in The Flintstones, the plots, plot devices and atmosphere seem rather limited with what can be done on the end of the writers and storyboard artists-at least from my humble perspective. Lastly, the plot outcomes seem rather formulaic. Much like a Roadrunner and Wile Coyote cartoon or the aforementioned Pinky & The Brain, the characters' desires and goals are simple, but the end results will end in failure and/or outright pain for one or both of the main characters. Just my two cents on why this this didn't get picked up.
@@GavriloGnatovich So what I think you’re telling me is that the network wouldn’t let you have full creative control? From one artist to another, that is something I completely understand. As Looney Tunes producer Leon Schlesinger said, “Art and Business shouldn’t mix.”
@@TPDManiacXC626 The network let me have creative control, they just didn't pick this up for series. The politics at play for a show where the focus group numbers were as high as this show, I will probably never know. Bill and Mandy was picked. If you can't get Jess Harnell I'll do it, because everybody asks me to do Wakko Warner.
I KNEW he sounded familiar
This art style reminds me of Cow and Chicken but with humans with constructive anatomy.
Nothing wrong with that.
Thank you for your perspective. The truth of the matter is more about the politics at the Network at the time than content.

So what I think you’re telling me is that the network wouldn’t let you have full creative control? From one artist to another, that is something I completely understand. As Looney Tunes producer Leon Schlesinger said, “Art and Business shouldn’t mix.”
@@TPDManiacXC626 The network let me have creative control, they just didn't pick this up for series. The politics at play for a show where the focus group numbers were as high as this show, I will probably never know. Bill and Mandy was picked. It is funny that you quote Leon, Warner Bros. had no clue what their cartoon staff was doing. Chuck Jones has many stories that proved this true. Thank you for your interest
What was that fruit anyway?
Luscious Lambata...whatever that is?:)
I miss old day of cartoon network I miss 2003
