Addiction is a reason I had a separate account. It was joint at first but one day looked and no money for the rent. He spent it all. Marriage never lasted. Addiction is a deal breaker. 50% of household in America live alone and there is a very good reason.

I was one of those people at the beginning of my marriage I had separate accounts with my wife it wasn't until about six months in that she asked me again and had a serious discussion about her spending habits. I agreed and now we are 10 years into the marriage. We have continued to have money issues because of her pilfering taking money for whatever she needs, but not considering the joint needs of the house with kids. So yes shared accounts are a double-edged sword.

Growing up in SoCal going to Disneyland was part of our birthday tradition. We always had a cooler with snacks, drinks and burritos! You can go to Disney and not spend a ton of money, they even sell the Mickey ears at Walmart now so go prepared and don't buy souvenirs. I love Disney, I have great memories there and as a kid it's all about the rides not the food and trinkets.

My husband refused to combine our incomes and right before 7 years was up, he rented a house, moved in with his employee, filed for divorce and left me within a month of having our 2nd child.
Absolutely imperative incomes be combined after marriage.

From a recovering Disney diehard fan..finding the joy outside of Disney! Even saving and paying cash for Disney…it’s just sooo much money that the adults push to squeeze out every “magical” moment. They have such high expectations, and it’s hard long days with lines, crowds full of others wanting it all, and maybe the heat/rain on top of that. I have seen more adults meltdown than kiddos and it’s not pretty. Take that savings and go to a state park lodge, a water park, relax and enjoy your kiddos and let the magic just happen.

I've been married 30 years and we've always had a joint bank account. Works for us. My sister and her husband have been married for 31 years and have a joint bank account, but pay certain bills separately from each of their incomes, and split the mortgage down the middle. It seems complicated to me, but it works for them. Everyone is different, and different things work for different people.

If I see money is there, kids want something I get it for them. I try not to but I do. I don't buy for myself, just them. We have never lived on credit and technically we are on baby step 3 - I have organised seperate accounts so I don't ruin our plan to move past baby step 3 and then our plan to save enough to pay off our home. joint account for savings is NOT working for me! lol

Keeping separate accounts when couples have big income differences is extra insane to me. Why would you want your PARTNER to have a worse quality of life than you?? About 2 years ago, we bought our dream home. Had the cash ready to pay in full! 600k. Last minute I chickened out and put 100k down and took out a 500k mortgage at 2.75%.
Over the last 8 months, I have taken that 500k and put it into CDs ranging from 5-6%. So, now I pay about $1100 a month in mortgage interest. But, I make about $2300 a month in bank interest.
I will admit this was a unique situation, as you just have to time it right where rates are all really low, and you lock one in, and then immediately after you lock it in, all the rates go up. I wouldnt throw that 500k in the market because I want a guaranteed return so if I change my mind, I can just pay the mortgage off in full, which I will probably do when the CD rates plummet, but I am locked into those for at least 5 years.
Moral of the story, Im glad I chickened out and didnt listen to Dave on this one.

Sonja, your idea to live in a van and work remotely really scares these two kids! But I get it. They can't fathom the insecurity of parking along the south rim of the Grand Canyon for a couple weeks while working remotely, then repeating on the north side, which is a very different point of view. Desert vs Forest. Now go have fresh lobster in Maine.
A house isn't just a token of security, like marriage. It's also a painful down payment and mortgage installments, it's insurance and mowing and HOA BS, and annual property taxes and a roof and water heater and AC, yada, yada, yada. I did that. What a yoke.
Living to "retirement age" is certainly not guaranteed. I'm the first man in three generations to reach it.
Get out of debt, ABSOLUTELY. But go live your dream soon as you can, while you can still move. Go live on the river while you off the CCs. A quality van-based motorhome costs far less than any house worth having, and no more than rent these days. And when you've seen that said 500,000 miles of this great nation, without worrying about a house you haven't seen for years, you will have few regrets.

The family making $500,000 and feels they need to move because their extended family dysfunction could get a mortgage that they'll pay off in a few years would be pay less in interest than the extra move and losing a year or so of equity they would have had in buying. Extremely legalistic and I understand that, especially publicly, they need to stick to the principles in their advice, but really you're going to tell a family to go rent for 2-3 years until they can afford a cash payout on their dream home while making $500k? If they rent an average house in Austin its gotta be around $3k minimum. So you want the family to waste $72k-108k renting while building up the additional $300k instead of going back to baby step 6 with a small mortgage and huge equity position? She even said they planned to pay the house they wanted off in 2 years.
