I used a Longworth Chuck in combination with a sanding disc mounted on the tail stock of my lathe. I glued the 2 discs of 3/4” MDF and it is perfectly flat. Then used adhesive backed sanding discs mounded to the MDF. Adjusted the pressure of the sanding disc via the quill on the tail stock. Works like a charm. I just make sure the sanding disc does not spin while the Longworth is turning.

If you are seeing this on Sunday 11-17-19 we haven't posted it for sale on the web site yet. We hope later today or early Monday morning.
    Thanks, Ron

nice idea. love it. I especially like how you could use these button bottoms to protect the wood (like a bowl) from hitting the metal plate of the chuck too.
However, your choice to demonstrate at 2:30 is unfortunate. While this technique works great and is easy for a proper ring, the solid panel presents some challenges that your viewers should learn about. Because the center moves much slower than the edge, when you sand like this it is very easy to NOT be flat. The outer edge will sand Fast, and the center (of a solid disc) will sand 10-30x slower. with a simple ring though, without the solid center, the differences between the inner and outer circumference aren't so much, and you're likely to get it as flat as you say!

Ted, I didn't have a single segmented ring on hand but needed to get the video done to make my point. However, you are overthinking this. If a person is smart enough to do this kind of woodworking, they are smart enough to check the flatness and sand more in the middle; like you just pointed out.

That's not correct. The differences in radial speed will have no effect as the board is flat and straight.

Nothing beats the drum sander though, it was a huge game changer for me.

Not everyone has a drum sander, or a CNC, or two lasers. So, this is a terrific idea in the meantime.

Yes sir nice work the way you started the video was awesome water remains perfectly flat and level the natural physics of water is to remain flat no matter distance there's no proof of curvature or rotation and water does not stick to the exterior of a shape it has to have a container welcome to Flat Earth
