    Your clamp for gluing segment rings is old-school genius thinking. Since I'm an old-school Norwegian, I decided to try your method. Followed your instructions and completed the clamp and the first ring this morning. Worked flawlessly! Thank you for sharing your talents!

    I tried rubber bands and moved to metal band clamps. For years I've been frustrated due to usually having to find two clamps end-to-end to get the the correct size I need and having excess glue on the bands clogging the screw threads. I saw another of your videos where you used this clamp and was amazed at the simplicity. Thanks for this post where you show how you make it and provide comments on best construction techniques and materials. A couple of these are my next shop project!

    What a great idea! The simple ideas are quite often the best. I made my first segment rings yesterday and struggled with the gapping and clamping. I’ve just watched your video on the segment cutting and now this clamp and I’m happy that my next segments will be a lot tighter than my first!!
    I really like your method too, watching people like yourself in your shop is great as all the little things you do make a big difference.
    I’ve just subscribed too .
    Thank you 👍🏻

    Been searching for this method. Clamps are giving me troubles, and rubber bands only work for the right size rings. This is very universal.

My segments have to be ripped and will be about 4 to 6 inches high. I am making cannisters for flour and sugar. They'll have lids on them and will be oak. Nothing fancy but useable.

    Earl, question... do you ever have an issue with the glue from the segments sticking to the rope?

  • @michaelkirk7908
    @michaelkirk7908 Рік тому

    Instead of wood, it might be easier to use a short piece of metal pipe with filed slots on the ends. Then tie knots in the cord loop, and you can change loop size by putting the screwdriver through different knots at different locations in the cord loop.

    Question.... You said this clamp was not suited for smaller rings, why is that?

    • @earlssmallsegmentshop5798
      @earlssmallsegmentshop5798  7 років тому

      They are too big to keep the segments aligned right, if I was going to make a lot of smaller rings I would make a smaller clamp

    • @garybeasley4885
      @garybeasley4885 7 років тому

      earl rasmussen I was using it on some 4 1/2 inch rings and it worked fine. However I think a line half as thick would give more leeway. Scale everything down proportionally? I will let you know how well it works.

      earl rasmussen Do you think it would help to notch the wood at the contact point to help hold alignment of the segments?

  • @Sea-Dog5496
    @Sea-Dog5496 7 років тому

    Hello Earl. I like your video on your string clamping segmenting rings. It got me to thinking about making one like yours for the same reason, I was not fond of steel hose clamps. I took a a little different path in my design. It worked but I have only been with it for about one week. Basically I used a 18 inch square piece of plywood, covered it with a plastic bag so the glue would not stick to it from the glue up of a ring. I used a nylon string I ran through a plastic tube used for air line cylinders long enough to encircle most any size ring. Anchor string to an small eyelet screw on the lower left of the board at the edge. Attached a small strip of wood about 1 of 2 inches lower than the screw eye. This way I can wind the string counterclockwise around under the strip of wood and around the ring returning where I started the string. The strip of wood at the bottom acts as a shelf to pull against when the string is tighten. The bottom side of the strip of wood I worked a grove on for the string to beheld captive when the string get tighten. Then the string continues on to the right side of the board where I made a ratchet gear and pawl with spring attached. Made a handle mounted on top of the ratchet with an extra screw to put the string on the screw with little a ring tided to the string. Turning the ratchet takes up the string and tightens the string bring the segment together.With Ratchet and Pawl you can tighten it as tight as you want.

    • @earlssmallsegmentshop5798
      @earlssmallsegmentshop5798  7 років тому

      I thought about making a ratchet system, but this was so much easier.
