The ticking at the end of the video was due to the Exhause CAM Gear not being properly aligned. I aligned it back up correctly & now the engine is quite as it can be!

How did you line it up properly?
I am doing the head gasket on mine right now & I couldn't put the service bolt thru, didn't line up do to the prior owner doing a HG on it 6 yrs ago but I lined them up after I took the cams out & I put it back in with the service bolt thru there, do u think it will be better or worse cuz it was fine the last 4 yrs I had it without the gears lining up, just wondering if I should have put it back like it was since it had been running like that for yrs, if it ain't broke don't fix it type of shit u know

I think people need to know in this video, the exhaust cam shaft gear and sub gear were not installed incorrectly, he would have had to go back in and adjust them (big job again).
At time marker 17:40, he discovered the problem of the service bolt not going through the sub gear and main gear of the exhaust cam shaft. He then hears the sound at 32:00 that's the sub-gear out of alignment noise. You need to get a tool like an OTC 4754 universal pulley wrench to adjust the gears then insert the service bolt until the cam shaft caps are placed.
Also it's common practice to put a dab of seal packing or fipg on the engine block where it meets the timing cover, if you rub your fingernail across that surface it'll slightly catch.. Thus requiring the dab of packing. Toyota recommends #08826-00080 seal packing, you'll see people use "right stuff 90 min" black gasket instead to save a few $.

Yes. You are correct. The sub gears were not aligned. It was fixed after the first start a few days later!

I bought a New 2.7 3RZ motor from engine monster probably three and a half years ago and now its blown a head gasket. I've only put about 30,000 miles on it. Its never over heated and I've change the oil on time every time. I was told it was a new motor now Im thinking they sold me a re-main. Just giving you a heads up.
Just dropped the head off at a machines and was told that its cracked. APR/Engine monster have cheaper low quality motors. I asked if the motor was new or built....with a bad attitude was told "they are brand new from Japan" I call bull shit on that. I'm using the OEM head now the heads from APR/Engine Monster are aftermarkets cast heads... BY THE WAY THIS MOTOR WAS NOT RAN HOT!
@@bryanguchereau-noaaaffilia6199 That is good to know, I am thinking to maybe disassembly my engine head which it is the original and have never be worked on then take it to the machine shop just like I did with our Corolla, have them assemble it. I remember paying about 3-400 dollars for it 3 years ago; the head he shows here is now $800.00 from APR on ebay; it is nice to get it in few days almost ready but these days who knows what we are getting; I know almost for sure the head in my truck is not cracked as it has never overheated badly, only now it blew the gasket because the age on it and high mileage; running without coolant and water for 30-40 miles I do not think would warp the whole engine or crack anything because I was watching the temp gauge go up them I would stop, let it go down and drove like that until making it back home, it was only a few miles drive in the city with some 20-30 min in the highway at 65-75 mph when it started to climb the temp gauge immediately exited the highway.
@@fireyourrocketts I paid $75 to get it pressurize, $75 to get it resurfaced and like $250 something to get him to rework the valves and not sure how much but since the head has dual overhead cams I paid him to adjust the valves also this was on the OLD OEM head. The Engine monster head .... crack was on the number two cylinder edge of the valve spring port and exhaust. I had water vapor out the exhaust but not in the water. Once it set over the weekend water made its way to the oil.
I don't have a Toyota or 4 cylinder but great video. I'm happy you got that thing running. Great job. Ready to see it on the trails.
Not only is there a difference in these 3RZ heads pertaining to distributor vs coils, there is EFI vs carburated, AND 8-port vs 4-port intake holes.

Did you clean those head bolt holes in the block with a bottoming tap and spray cleaner? Because if you didn't, you will NOT get accurate torque readings when torquing that new head down. Carbon deposits get caked up in the threads of the bolt holes in the block, and it MUST be cleaned out. ( This is true for ANY engine. ) This can cause a blown head gasket prematurely.

I have the 2.4 with distributor. I'm getting foamy radiator fluid, but the oil looks fine. I have a external slow leak. 288K miles. I did my valve cover gasket to stop oil from leaking onto my belts, but now I'm wondering if I have a bad head gasket. Awesome video btw! One of the best.
Definitely a blown head gasket. If not worse, something’s cracked.

Maybe, but now it's at 297K miles, and after flushing the radiator a bunch of times (back when I made that previous comment) and changing the oil, I haven't had too many hints of a blown head gasket. However, recent inspection of the new Toyota long life coolant reveals that it is not as clean as it should be. No foaming, but it seems to have something off. I'm going to pull some out and see if perhaps there's a tiny bit of oil. I suspect some very tiny leak still.
@@kenfuciusfpv2800 is it a 22RE or a 2RZ? I’ve done a head gasket job on a 22RE but not a 2RZ. I think they’re pretty similar. The 22RE was the easiest head gasket job ever and I assume the 2RZ is mostly the same. So you might want to just do it, and make sure you don’t have a small crack or something like that. I had it done in a week, most of that time was just waiting for the shop to resurface my head

hi, no issue with it, they sent the EX cams not lining up with the service bolt. all I had to do was line up the two gears and then install the service bolt before installing the cam.
I didn't know that till I was done, that's why a t the end, it was TICKING more than it should, I had that fix the next following day

great video.u helped me out by listing thorough info .also did u ever get to the bottom of the service bolt not going through?i have the same head and one side of the gear has a pin or something in it not allowing for it to be going tyhru both gears.any word on that or what did u do ?

How would you say the quality of your head was? I ordered a full motor from APR auto, but not through eBay so I’m not entirely sure if they’re still the same company or seller.

Quality was great. I would used them again. I sold the truck couple months after I made this video. But the truck is still running around town. It’s been abuse by the new owners.

I didn’t and I haven’t had any problems 3 years later. That was on a 22RE though maybe it’s different on the 3RZ but I doubt it. I finally upgraded from my 94 pickup to a REALLY clean 03 4x4 Tacoma. Hoping to not have to do any engine work to this one for a long time. It’s at 188,000 miles
Did you move your pistons down in order to install and torque camshafts?. I heard that you have to moved to 9 o clock the crankshaft when installing camshafts so it won’t bent valves

Crank must be TDC, install heads and then install the cams, according to the FSM. You cams may have been align improperly??..

I'm tackling the exact same job. In in progress of tearing down the engine, but I hit a snag (well, 3 actually). I can NOT get the electrical connection off the distributor (the engine electrical harness attachment). There are also two more electrical connections on the Air Intake Plemum (again, to the electrical harness). HOW do you get those *&$% connections apart? I can't find a video on it anywhere, either.
they all have a "press" tab that you need to press, try cleaning it if needed
@@NuttyNu I wish it were that easy. I've pressed those tabs until my knuckles crack. They don't move. I'm wondering if there's a trick..a sliding lock, a twisting latch...something out of the ordinary. If there isn't...then I'm at a loss. I'm to the point where I'm ready to cut them off and replace the whole damned harness.
I got the connectionns off. A mechanic I know, told me to use "Spark Plug Pliers" to get the plugs off. That and the liberal use of "Electrical cleaner" unlocked them to the point where I could get them off.

hi Jeff, it was cause the exhaust cam gear wasn't properly lined up. you have to line up the sub gear they call it and then install the ex cam into the head. hope this help. this solve the ticking noise.

They didn’t install one, when I bought it, after the completion, i went back and fixed ot
It have come the time for me to repair yet another engine as the head gasket blew in my 2000 Toyota Tacoma just as I started it after 6 years sitting in driveway; hd to replace a failed fuel pump at a cost of $400 for the part plus $270 for the mechanic that came, diagnosed the initial issue then did the labor; same guy after he did not warned me about the obvious engine age of 209000 miles on without an issue; he did not (neither did I but how would I know???) check any fluids other than oil which we agree to get the truck running first then oil would be changed; well, I went for a spin to get the truck to pass smog noticing it was raising the coolant needle, did not let it overheat for long; took it home after driving around 20-30 miles and once shut off the ignition that was it; next start lead to same guy coming over, doing a compression test and got zero on cyl 1 and 3, 180 in 2 and 4; he says it is "best" to do the whole engine but I can see this is possible at half the price it would cost the whole engine. rewind 4 years back had same issue with a 2004 Toyota Corolla; a crooked mechanic who conveniently forgot to tell me the car was burning oil after he replaced engine at a cost of $1700.00 only to tell me it will be the same price when engine blew second time; fired as my main mechanic I took it to the task to rebuild that engine myself; did it but engine is still under a tarp outside the house waiting to be dropped into the bay and car reassembled; I took my time and rebuild the whole thing getting quality parts and making sure all is to specs and replaced; do not want any more surprises then now I got the truck down and wonder if I should do 'just" the head or the whole thing; do not know yet if coolant went into the engine but I can tell you the reason it was overheating which destroyed its original gasket was precisely low volume of coolant and water which none of us checked before taking the car out. In any case; the mechanic I got now which most likely will be also fired, he wants to charge $700.00 labor for getting the Tacoma engine out and in, and he would charge $400.00 for putting the Corolla back together again, in that case the Corolla also has an issue with the air conditioning so I think he will take a fly to his next victim and now I am collecting the strengths I need to get these two big jobs done!

@@NuttyNu Granted, I did the Corolla with you tube and the Haynes manual, it just needs to be drop back into engine bay and assembled to troubleshoot and repair AC which was blowing hot air last time it was running. I can not find any you tube video of 2000 Toyota Tacoma engine removal to see if it is easier than the 2004 Corolla or worst, which is why I am leaning to just do the head; found the guys on ebay where you got yours; now price is $800.00 for it, free shipping, I am guessing still need few more parts beside the head like gaskets and all that jazz; I need spark plug wires which Mr. Mechanic destroyed taking them out without paying for them, also thinking in new sensors, thermostat, oil pump and water pump as well as hoses and belts; it would be nice to replace the clutch but agin; I do not want to get into another 3 or 4 years of the car disable because it takes me forever to get things going as I said the Corolla is half done with engine back together but sitting under a tarp for almost 4 years now.
My '98 3rz has coils and isn't a changeover.

When you replaced the fuel injectors did your truck stop shaking and misfiring?
no, I installed new injectors and is was still misfiring. I then perform a compression test and that's when I knew the valves were burnt on cylinder one, my other video. I showed the burnt valves and crack cylinder head

YES, do a comp test! its easy and free, just go rent the tool from your part store. it'll see you tons of money. dont dump any money into it till you have the test

I believe they were 12m but in 12 point sockets
