If you had the kind of season that McDavid did last year and didn't win the cup, you'd be pissed too. The Oilers are going to be back with a vengeance this year and everybody knows it. McDavid and Draisatl are setting the standard and everybody is going to fall in line. It's the kind of leadership that leads by example and gets everybody bought in on the quest for greatness.

McDavid in the position as the Captain has been a slow growth process, but last year you could see he was really embracing his leadership role on a higher level that we always hoped he could reach. This year we are fully entering Connor's true Captain Era. He has a goal for this team. He will do what is needed to ensure the team will reach that goal. I think the dedication is quite motivating, and from the team's response you can see he is a very well respected Captain indeed. It is a beautiful sight.
100%. Last year was the turning point in his leadership. They are a leave top contender. If both goalies come in hot, they will get it done.

3rd & 4th liners didn't step up in the playoffs. You NEED these guys to be big game players, either shutdown defensively or put the puck in the net. McD & Drai are only out there 1/3rd of the game. It's the no name guys that win you a cup.
They need another good defenseman or 2 --- but they are close to doing something special. Mcdavid should get better along with Draisatl. They can & must improve. Thats what great players do...... Other teams don't play nice come playoffs--- they let Vegas off the hook...

Not a ton of history of goalies finding their game in Edmonton. If they do it this year, Campbell won't be in the net in the deciding game

Take Devan Dubnyk...sucked in Edmonton .. was so much better after he left. All the teams that you mentioned had FAR better defense core than the oilers of today. Even the 06 team..pronger, staios, smith etc. Far superior

Bro. Let Bouchard and Ekholm further develop their obvious chemistry, and let skinner get used to the NHL. Two years ago I was preaching ‘Yamamoto for Korpisalo’ and everybody thought I was stupid, and we ended up basically giving Moto away and played a hard series against, guess who, Korpisalo. But everyone still thinks they need a goalie. Skinner will be great, he’s a home town kid, playing for the team he grew up watching, the heart is there and so is potential. I’m 29 and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the team draft and develop a goaltender in my life, so I wish more people would give Skinner some slack.

Is there anything more grueling in sport than the 4 rounds of 7 games each that is the NHL playoffs? where anything can and does happen out of the blue? nothing like it in sport therefor predicting a winner is futile. This is nothing, Kane was already in Edmonton last month playing in the hockey beer league. That’s dedication no matter how you look at it.
I think keeping a routine for Kane is important with his addictions and lawsuits as well. Keep on the straight and narrow. I hope his injuries are healed up well..I have high hopes for him!

A wonderful reminder of why I love even pro hockey. The players still seem like regular dudes who love to play, realize how awesome it is to get paid good money to play, and still enjoy the sport.

I am a Leafs fan but I'm rooting for the Oilers too, I'm really trying to like them since I love their history with Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Anderson, Fuhr, Lowe, you name it. I want a Leafs-Oilers final, that's what I want, I want only the Canadian Anthem playing during a Stanley cup finals game, I want Matthews and Mcdavid, Marner and Draisaitl, Rielly and Nugent-Hopkins, Samsonov and Campbell. And whichever team wins, make sure it's not just about the city, Toronto or Edmonton, make it about Canada as a whole, have every Canadian cheering on both teams, no matter if they like the Habs, Sens, Jets, Flames or Canucks

Sens did the same thing last year and again this season looking at last seasons results for the Sens it doesn't matter when tour team arrives as long as a team gets in a solid training camp and preseason without injuries it's not a bad thing but it's a lot more common now for players to get to camp start of September and for the ice to be in at the arena late August for these players to start early but still good to see go Oilers

People have to stop underestimating the rest of the oilers team. They have the best top 6 in the league and it’s not really that close with Connor brown. The defence is looking better with Ekholm and Bouchard coming into his own, and skinner just put up a .914 in his rookie year. The whole team is solid, not just 2 guys
Their D falls short against teams like Vegas. Nurse is a turnover machine. I honestly think the nurse and campbell contracts are what will hold them back...that's 14m in two guys that aren't worth it

First off every team that wins the cup has a goalie that played really well, Edmonton doesn't have that. Second, along with star towards you need a really good defense, Edmonton doesn't have that. Even if they have all that I guarantee a Canadian team will never win a Cup again. It wouldn't be in the league's best interest financially. Canadian teams don't lose money if they don't win the cup, American teams do. Can you imagine the money the league would lose if a Canadian team won a cup??

Any team or players can win it. Its just about who wants it more. If the bottom players step up, which can very rarely happen like with underdog wins. Anything is possible. Remember the kings, Montreal in 2021, Nashville in 2017 etc... some of those didnt win, but they still made the final.

Love to see it, especially as an Oil fan. But it’s going to be an absolute DISASTER if this team doesn’t get atleast to the cup final. This season seems like it’ll be an even bigger influence on McDavid and Draisaitl resigning.

I am a panthers fan, but I’m also a diehard hockey fan. I’d love to see them win the cup. I think they have all the tools… except one. And it’s the biggest one…I just can’t make them my cup favorite with such a question mark in goal.
It's not the goaltending that's the problem as much as it is that they need to learn a shut down defensive system the way Vegas has. It's easy to play goal when they shut down offense and allow only shots from the outside.
Yeah they definitely have all the tools. Except for NHL level coaching, scouting, management, bottom-six forwards, defence and goaltending. Other than that they’re RIGHT THERE man.

Okay, but honestly? It seems the league has supposed to have been scared for years of this team, and they fall flat on their faces. Every. Single. Time.
Now Oiler's fans, correct me if I'm wrong, but from an outside POV, I have yet to see them address any of their weak spots. Did they fix any reocurring issues this off-season?

They literally hired Jeff Jackson who will assess up close what’s necessary to address their shortcomings.
If it’s evident that Campbell isn’t up to par for a serious Cup run then he’ll be traded, if Jay Woodcroft doesn’t improve and address the structural issues on how the Oilers defend as a team then he’ll be fired and replaced and so on….bottom line, the players are a little older and more experienced and have made significant strides the last several seasons so now the Oilers led by McDavid just need to elevate themselves and their standard to the point where there is an internal expectation to win and win a lot.
The recurring issue is not so easy to fix: too much money tied up in too few contracts makes it really hard to build the depth you need to win a cup. Ok, McDavid and Draisaitl earn their huge salaries, but imagine if Nurse and Campbell were being paid at the level they are playing at? How much more money would the Oilers have to beef up the defense and the bottom six?
Having Ekholm for the whole season will really help our defence. I know people say that it’s just one guy, but he’ll also take some pressure off of Nurse who doesn’t have to play as many minutes, as well as just being an overall positive influence on other defensemen to sharpen their game and learn from him. Not to mention the addition of Connor Brown who has had good chemistry with mcdavid in the past, I’m also expecting Campbell to have a bounce back year, he was good in the playoffs and I can’t imagine him doing worse this season, as well as skinner now being a little more experienced coming into this season. As well as just the general mentality of the team. Last year the Oilers got completely swept by the Aves and knew that there probably wasn’t much they could do. This year the Oilers had a very close series against the knights and had a crushing defeat. They knew that they should’ve won that series, and probably would’ve made it to the finals if they had beaten them. They know that they’re so close. Ofc hockey players always try their absolute hardest, but I think them knowing that they’re so close to the cup will give them even more energy. The only ones that can stop Edmonton from winning the cup is themselves, when they play good, they’re absolutely unstoppable
@@TheClumsyChicken yes, Ekholm was a great addition and makes a big difference. The core problem is still there. With Nurse and Campbell getting paid what they are the Oilers don't have the cap space they need to beef up the bottom 6 and the defense to the needed level.

Why would the entire NHL be scared? There is still an entire season to go, and starting early and looking sharp does NOTHING to prevent injuries, which in most cases is the bane of teams to make it to the SC Playoffs and a Cup Win. And as for them EXPECTING TO WIN, that might have been their issue. They expected to win while Vegas WANTED TO WIN.

I imagine they will be looking at it up to the trade deadline, seriously. If it looks good then they will carry on. If it does not they will try and find a different solution then. There would be zero benifit in trying to change things right now before the season started.

Jets had Vegas “fans” booing their team and leaving 10 minutes early. And then 3-4 all star players got injured. Don’t recall the Oilers doing the same with a full lineup. Vancouver 2011 thought they had the greatest team ever assembled and burnt their city down. Just because you’re delusional, doesn’t make your team any better.
I think Edmonton has too many question marks (i.e., overall depth both forward and blueline, goaltending, 5 on 5 play) to be a serious SC contender. However, if those can be largely overcome, then they definitely are going to be a real threat. Having said that, my prediction for the WCF is once again Dallas-Vegas.

Edmonton will make playoffs. Then they will be defeated around a second round, because two players doesn't make a team, depth does. I don't have a favorite team in NHL but i always cheered for the underdogs. That means i am not a fan of this team. Everybody is squirting their pants, talking about McDavid and his number two. They can be mad all they want, but until they have a proper depth, nothing is gonna change.
