@@Built2Chill I read an interview with him today (from a few years ago) where he said that you could go to your local Guitar Center and easily find 2 or 3 guys who are much better guitar players than him (?!). He's incredibly humble.
@@BrainDedd96 bro its not sad at all. they are making music. can you believe after all this time?! and it may not be this is a long drive or moon and antarctica but it's something.
I’m so glad to see and hear such good quality recordings of a show from this era. Not really much is documented with this three piece since they only lasted a year or so till it changed to Plouf and Nelson so to see even just a 30 minute set with them is awesome.
1. That performance of Nowhere Nuthin Fuckup is incredible. 2. If I could have seen Built to Spill and THEN Foo Fighters in 1995, it would've been one of my favorite concerts ever.
it's 2016 - he did that during his 6/17/16 show in Chicago...I don't even think people understood what was going on. Others had their jaws on the floor...then they finished the song. it was brilliant.
Wowzer. Gem of an upload. Sound is tops. Well done. 17:36 to 18:32 what a progression. Nowhere Nothin' Fuck Up ----> SO GOOD. It's the weirdest, most precise, clean vocal, passion explosion of that song I've ever seen or heard.
I went to Andy Capp's homecoming party in Twin Falls, ID when he got out of the Navy - 1987 or 88. Doug was playing in Farm Days back then. Saw numerous times with SOC at the Oddfellows.
So cool. Thanks for posting this. It's awesome to hear some of their hits before they became classics. They sound very raw and it's great. I love Doug.
So cool. Damn this is before Doug set a permanent lineup with Brett and Scott. Doug has a full head of hair! James Bertram from Lync on bass! John McMahon on cello! Thanks for sharing
imagine being that good at playing guitar, must be the most amazing feeling.
He would probably tell you he's mediocre at best is the crazy part

@solidmotion They might be "technically" better but very few people have their own unique, identifiable sound like Doug does with the instrument
He said "i play whats comfortable to my fingers, like the way they are positioned" but then hes an amazing songwriter and that is unique to him
0:26 Three Years Ago Today
4:39 Stab
10:10 Big Dipper
15:33 Reasons
19:39 Nowhere Nothin' Fuckup
I love love love 90's indie 3 person groups.
When modest mouse was actually incredibly epic its very sad what they have become 😢

we gotta celebrate longevity not put them down for who they used to be.
@@BrainDedd96i used to feel this way and then while I dont listen to much new stuff I appreciate they still making music. RIP to their last drummer :(
Three Years Ago Today is one of my favorite songs ever. They sound so much different as a 3 piece.
Dave Schneider and James Bertram from Lync on drums and bass. What a bomb ass lineup

Haven't watched this in a hot minute. Love me some indie rock cello. Bassist has got infectious energy. Quality broken string jam.

I went to bts twice. Will go again if they are in berlin again. 20 euro is a joke to see them live. I love this band.
Yes but not FF
That Bass player was killing it with his moves haha
oh absolutely, both him and the drummer have such chill, laid back but in the pocket vibes. these guys really are something
Killer band. Very underrated. I dig Treepeople also.
Breaks a string around 12:45 and changes it in the middle of their set. "Sorry, I only have one guitar" fucking Doug

Anna Stefanski this happened in St. Louis, MO on Sept 26, 2016 also during Randy Described Eternity. It was nuts.
I remember i was there.. support act Built to Spill and main act was Foo Fighters

Might be the best Nowhere Nothing Fucked Up I have seen.
You are correct sir

Is that Andy Capps on drums?
Dave Schneider I believe
Dave Schneider of Lync is also there.
This is nothing short of a treasure.
thank you a ton for this upload amazing show
That is truly very amazing!!!
can't like this enough...it's the BTS that I first fell for.
Awesome footage! Thank you ;D
Everytime I see James Bertram I think of the linear notes to Becks One Foot in the Grave
What'd they say if you don't mind me asking? I'm a huge fan of Jame's band Lync and I dig anything I can find remotely related to them
@@michaelgraham9774he played on that record
Doug is such a legend
Doug is raw shredding
Incredible! Thanks for sharing this gem!
I've never seen anyone break as many strings as Doug. I don't know if it's a gift or a curse...
Neil Young haha
i break strings probably as often as he does.. similar picking style i guess
It's because he strums with alot of force.
@@bandname really?
@@liamingrouille9905he also uses the shit out of whammy bar, on strats in particular that gives alot of tension when you dive into it like he does
James is such a good fucking bassist it makes me jealous
he’s seriously ripping
4:58 you forget the words, buddy? don't worry, we still love you!
This is a very cool version of big dipper! A bit darker, but just as amazing
bass sounds sick in this recording. unfortunately one of the few times i’ll say it’s a tiny bit too loud..
Gotta give a shout-out to the Sonic Bubblegum label. I used to have that shirt-wish I knew where.
❣❣
james on bass 😍
Anyone else notice a minor variation in Big Dipper?
the chord proression in the verse sounds different
yea he played the chords in the wrong order and changed the dmin to a dmaj
immediately scrolled the comments to see if someone else noticed. sounds pretty cool tbh
Doug's strat is unscathed and it's 1995. I wonder what year he made his modifications.
late reply, but around 04 I think
Oh, when he removed the tone knobs? Looks like it has the locknut and Lace sensor pick ups.
inverted big dipper? @_@
Yea they were doing that for awhile back then.
James fuckin bertram
Man. That is a good rhythm. Sound on guitar is hard for me to hear well. My hearing is suspect.
Guitar solo- let’s zoom in on that guy I’m a nutter butter OJ
What’s wrong w this Big Dipper version?
It’s always that damn G string!
James Bertram
OH GOD kill me if i was born Dutch
i enjoy happy things good time english languish
THIS IS PURE GOLD. 3 piece BTS sound so good.
if you like built to spill then listen to slint
BTS is best as a five piece
