Trial Story - Robert Bardo (1993)

  • "The defendant is not a normal person."
That's an opinion straight from the mouth of the Honorable Dino Fulgoni.
It's Marcia Clark for the prosecution in the 1991 trial of Robert Bardo.
Bardo is charged with the July 18, 1989 murder in the first degree of actress Rebecca Schaeffer.
There was never any doubt that Bardo shot and killed Rebecca. This trial is to determine whether or not Bardo was sane at the time.
Bardo's defense lawyer, Stephen Galindo, who describes his client as "a victim of parental neglect," claims Bardo was suffering from "diminished actuality" at the time of the shooting and should not be found guilty.
Appearing as an expert witness for the defense is Dr. Park Dietz.
    Fred Graham is the host.

I did time with Bardo at Avenal State prison. In fact he was in the dorm next to mine. I remember he would wolf down chow hall food like it was his last meal on earth. He would try to spark up conversations with other inmates but mostly kept to himself. Never saw him get visitors or go to canteen.
He would attend church & bible studies.
I once saw him flip out because another inmate turned the channel on the day room TV while Taylor Swift was being interviewed on Extra or E channel. Can't remember.
Apparently he had an obsession with Taylor Swift.
This was just a few years ago.

@@angelwings7930 no, he was not criminally insane and your statement demonstrates that you lack understanding of what it means. The test for criminal insanity is a legal one, not a psychiatric one, and slightly varies by jurisdiction. However, even under the broadest test, it requires a defendant’s mental illness to make it impossible for them to know they were committing a crime or illness or to understand that their actions were morally wrong. Bardo knew what he was doing was wrong, he was not unable to control his actions, and he knew the nature of his actions and what the result would be.

42:25 schizophrenic and at one point you can see him try to snap out of it but he couldn't. He was a ticking time bomb. Frontal Lobe disorder. I am curious about if he was on any meds or was he undiagnosed? People also failed Robert not just Rebecca. He really needed mental help bigtime. I used to work in a mental hospital with people less ill than him. And as he describes the murders its as if he is excited. Its giving him dopamine and serotonin when he speaks of her thats how deep he is disturbed. I wonder what his life is now. In prison rotting away looking out a window and it probably does not bother him. Complete sociopath and psychopath. He needed to be taken out of society a very long time ago. He murdered her because he thought she went from good girl to bad. He could not discern what reality was. In his own world very lonley and detached. It was premeditated murder in my opinion. He sought out to harm her because SHE REJECTED HIM at the doorway as well. Never let this disturbed man out of prison. 15:00 his brother who knew he was mental bought the gun because Robert was jumped and his 33:35 his dad took him to the bus station. Wow 34:45 his mom whoa never saw this 37:00 wow listen to Roberts letters. Twisted. Robert also stalked his teacher up until she dissed his brother. 40:00

Even Bono of U2 says that he and the band’s music were not responsible for the poor choices and actions RJB made in the killing of Rebecca Schaeffer and that music was simply a form of entertainment. Not that he was being ignorant of what had happened here, I’m sure Bono and the rest of U2 wouldn’tve liked their music mis-interpreted for the wrong reasons. Just like how Judas Priest had no idea that two kids blew their heads off with a riffle, with one kid killing himself on the spot, the other committed suicide by overdose later on.
