Let's face it! The world hates fire ants. It is not hard to understand why seeing as they are a major domestic pest in many countries, as well as a very dangerous agricultural pest, like in the Unites States where they pose serious problems and affect human way of life. They even float on water forming huge rafts during floods like some aquatic, indestructible beast.
In this video, we take a closer look at my pet fire ant colony named "The Fire Nation" in their AC Hybrid Nest ant farm setup, learn where fire ants came from, find out why they are such a powerful and impacting force in any ecosystem, but more importantly why they are magnificent evolutionary survival machines, and why I personally love them. We delve into the miracle of ant life, and why I feel ants in general make interesting and amazing pets in the home. Hope you enjoy this week's ant video!

The reason i hate (or used to hate) fire ants is cuz one time when I was swimming at summer camp, I put my shirt on a chair while I was in the pool. It fell down onto the ground, and I didn't know there were fire ants on the ground. I put on the shirt after swimming and a few minutes later my back was itching and burning like nobody's business. Turns out a few fire ants had gotton inside my shirt and bit me in defense since I picked up and put on the shirt.
Yeah. It sucked. Really, really bad.
(As well as the time when my little brother fell onto a fire ant hill at school and they bit his arm all over. Poor kid.)
But now, heck, I find them really cool! I just wouldn't keep any as pets. I'm looking at Carpenter ants for my first colony.
2 years later edit: My carpenter colony is on the rise, with 5 workers and a bunch of brood on the way! ^^ I don't know why I shared that back then but it's got likes so guess it stays lmao

I don't hate all fire ants. In fact I find them quite fascinating, but I do hate them being in places like the us where they outcompete native ant species. That makes me rather sad.

Since then, I've become a little more sympathetic (mostly because of this channel), but I really hated them for years, and I can see why everyone hates them.

When I was little I remember seeing alot of types of ants (most of which where beautiful and did not sting) and when the fireants arrived they pretty much completly replaced them. Im origanially from Mexico btw.

We had a fire drill when I was in 7th grade and I ended up standing in a fire ant pile. They got all in my shoes and socks and I couldn't get them out. I cried it hurt so bad.

Well, if you seen the series, after Firelord Ozai decides to become the Phoenix King, he appoints Azula as his successor. After that, she says "Firelord Azula?" because at first she couldn't believe it. So I guess "Firelord" doesn't really care about genders.

Zuko's mother used to live in a simple village along with her boyfriend. Then the Fire Lord Azulon, upon finding the location, decided to marry her to his son, prince Ozai. This is because he found out that she was avatar Roku's daughter, and wanted to strengthen the royal bloodline.
It seemed like Roku tried to hide her for that very reason. She couldn't refuse. Fast forward several years, she kept sending secret letters to her boyfriend in the village. She suspected that the letters were being intercepted, so she wrote a lie in one of these letters implying that Zuko is actually the son of her and the boyfriend, rather than Ozai's.
As suspected, Ozai was indeed intercepting the letters; he was furious with that lie (he knew that it was a lie because he had spied on her for several months before meeting her) and confronted her. He decided that as punishment, he would indeed treat Zuko as if he wasn't his own son. Years later, when Azulon commands Ozai to kill his firstborn to have a taste of Iroh's loss during the war, Ozai accepted immediately.
Zuko's mother stopped him and offered him a deal: she would make a poison that Ozai could use to kill Azulon and take the throne, in exchange for sparing Zuko. He accepted, but at the condition that she would leave the palace because he feared her ability to make such deadly poison. Zuko's mother went back to the village where she found her boyfriend again

But if you wanna go by the actual definition, then anyone who watches any form of animated content, regardless of origin or style or medium, would be a weeb. Nope. Hate 'em. They're cool on youtube and in your farm, but if I see them literally anywhere else they will be given no quarter. I appreciate how neat they are. Their hierarchy is fascinating. But they've invaded my kitchen and half of my house on separate occasions. The second time was completely random too. There was NO food ANYWHERE. They smelled FABRIC SOFTENER. Again, they're cool, just anywhere I don't intend to spend time.
Yeah they suck. It's cool watching on this channel but they are so invasive. Your house, yard, anywhere and everywhere the can they go and try to muscle everything else out. Ants are cool for the most and i want to start a farm but no way would I ever have them as pets.

So I've been splitting firewood these past few weeks to sell and holy cow, I must have split open at least 100 logs from different trees that black ants (C. pennsylvanicus from my noobish attempt at identifying) pour out of - workers, winged reproductive females, and queens were easily spotted by the throng of ants around them in the birthing chambers. It was all ash logs so because ash trees have been dead for several years here in Michigan due to the ash borer plague it splits super easy (it splits cleanly, doesn't splinter like oak) and it burns well so if anyone is looking to start a colony finding some ash logs with perforated holes is a great way to get started. Plus, if cash is short, it's the perfect time of year to sell the firewood to fund buying one of the AC Hybrid nest habitats and selling a full cord (three face cord, a face is 4' high by 8' stacked) should get you enough or close to enough for the complete kit.

There used to be this form of torture where the torturer would tie the victum up so they couldnt move, pry open their mouth so they could shut it, and then shove their face into the fire ant hill so the ants can eat them alive.
I watch your videos to get over my ant phobia, that I got very specifically from traumatic childhood experiences with fire ants. I decided to watch after my kitchen and I would cry instead of eating food. I appreciate what you do, but hard pass on ever owning fire ants.

While I am able to watch your videos, I know I'll never be able to keep ants. I used to live in the southern US. I've been bitten many times by fire ants and even decades later shudder at the the thought of the intense pain. I've witnessed their destructive powers. And worst I've seen my brother pushed onto a large fire ant mound by other children. Now granted he mouthed off when he shouldn't have, but nobody deserves that kind of punishment. I can still hear his screams when I remember it. Even watching your videos, while fascinating, is not always easy. I just have too many bad memories of fire ants.

No, the reason why people hate them is because they are an invasive species with no natural predators in several places, driving out native ants.
That may be the reason some people hate them, but the reason I stated before is the reason I hate them. I've only ever came across little black ants and fire ants. And while I love watching the little black ones, especially when they're working together to drag huge bugs (compared to them) around. But I can't stand fire ants. I've never been attacked by the black ones, but I've been attacked quite a few times by fire ants. 😒 Let me tell you, its not fun when you have to quickly strip off your pants because you must have stepped on the spot they were trying to build their nest while mowing the lawn... 😳
When I lived in Alabama I was terrified and hated fire ants. Accidentally set my slip and slide up next to, what I thought was, a mole hill. I slid a little to far to the left and ended up covered in thousands of ants. Ran in the house and while trying to get in the tub and turn on the water I slipped and that's how I ended up with a chip in my tooth. Since moving to Washington and finding your channel i've grown to be alright with them, but I personally would never keep any variety of Fire ant. Just not that big of a fan.
When I get my own place i'll likely start keeping ants. Hopefully false honey pot ants :3

Visited a relative in Alabama once as a young child. Family was staying a few days. Grandmother set us up with rooms. She said she had changed the comforter, but did fail to mention the fire ants that had taken residence in the sheets. It did not end well. 0/10 Would not recommend. Izices when I was five I was in my backyard.my mom talking to my friends dad .they I felt something crawling on me and before I knew it thousands of ants for crawling on me. Then my mom took me inside and got me in the bathtub. Crying in pain my mom got me some ointment. It lasted more than a month. But, I still want to be a vet when I grow up so to this day I am 10 now and I'm still taking care of lots of animals including ants so I wouldn't say I have a fear of them I would just say I have a bad experience with them

Yes, I am anything but fond of fire ants. I was swarmed as a toddler, nearly died, and am now allergic. My sub-consciousness will not let me forget it. I lived in the southern US for most of my life, though a move up North has me well away from them. I don't intend on living within their range again.

While ants certainly aren't the pet for me, it's amazing to get a look at your colonies, and your enthusiastic and dramatic commentary is just a delight to listen to. :) It's also always refreshing to see someone put a lot of genuine effort into keeping their pets, no matter what kind of pet it is.
As I was covered in fire ants when I was a kid I hated them, but I was 4 and didn't know why they attacked me this was 25 years ago I now know I made the mistake of sitting on their mound and they felt attack and answered accordingly. Love the vids Ac greetings from Northern Cali

I don't hate fire ants, but I'm from southern Alabama and they're such a problem there that one often can't go even five feet without running into another nest. Daring to sit or lie in the grass is just asking for a swarm of attack ants to find you.
I remember I sat on the curb one day during a my walk back home from school when I was young. Accidentally put my hand into a fire ant nest. Didn't take me long to get home after that.

+Zero Noctis I heard their needs are pretty much the same. S. invicta can take cooler temps tho. Cold kills S. geminata even air conditioning.
@Zero Noctis Hi I'm MadVampy from the AntsCanada Ants Forum. I keep Solenopsis Invicta and they are pretty easy to keep, they prefer temps 70*F and above and a good amount of moisture. As far as the temp the warmer it is (with in reason) the faster they will reproduce given a good source of food. One thing to remember is that this species reproduces very quickly and you'll find the colony will grow really quickly under good conditions as you have seen in Mikey's videos so be prepared to expand your nests and out worlds. Also beings this is a stinging species make sure you or anyone that will come in contact with them are not allergic to stings (bee, wasps, so forth) because keeping this species you are guaranteed to get stung! I love watching how fast they grow and how aggressive they are, the main reason I keep them, oh yea and where I live the queens are really easy to find on nuptial flights (one day I collected over a 100 queens and made a video about it). Hope this helps and Ant Love Forever!

In Hawaii I'm one of the people in the frontline trying to keep Little Fire Ant in check. We have these tropical ones as well but as troublesome as they are, they are nothing compared to the L.F.A.

Except Luna is a Roman goddess and Aphrodite a Greek goddess. Besides, the Percy Jackson stories aren't mythologically accurate and you shouldn't use that as your primary source of info. Hell, in Roman mythology, Luna was the goddess of the moon, not of fertility. And the Greek goddess of fertility was Demeter.
So, before you correct someone on their mythology, don't confuse actual mythology with what you hear in movies or read in fantasy books.

Here in Tennessee we just started getting these a few years ago. Although they are kinda cool to see occasionally, I hope they don't threaten our carpenter ants. Our carpenter ants get nearly 3/4 an inch long and just watching a single ant is enjoyable.

A Fire ant once climbed on my hand to inspect.... It didnt bite.... It was one of best moments Ive ever had.... It left not hurt... didnt bite.... after that Ive sometimes walked to fire ant nest near our house nd get them some materials... I once put chocolate there....

I hate fire ants because I had a fire ant get into my ear once. It hurts like there is no tomorrow and my ear nearly got damaged, thankfully the doctor got her out in time
I still remember there is one time, after a rainy day, a downpour of ants with wings got into my house. It's a disaster. My father had to call for spraying and we couldn't sleep that night. I couldn't even speak without getting ants in my mouth. Fortunately, it seems to be a civil ant species, they just crawled around and no one got hurt
