What will a sixth-generation fighter jet look like? And what technology will be used on an aircraft not due to begin service for another 15 years? The Tempest project is working on creating Britain’s next generation of fighter. Some of the concepts being explored include mind-reading flight systems and highly advanced artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, we spoke to experts from BAE Systems to find out more about the aircraft which is expected to begin service in 2035, and fly into the 2070s and 2080s.

The "Tempest". Such a distinctly British and sophisticated name to give a fighter project. Love it.
The British have the best names for their military tech. Jackal, typhoon, tempest. But warship names are where they excelled, iron duke, revenge, repulse, warspite, furious
From WWII. The prototype replacement for the Hurricane was the Tornado. When it went into service it became the Typhoon, and the MKII version became the Tempest.
The current Typhoon replaced the Panavia Tornado, and the current Typhoon will be replaced with the new Tempest. Nice nod to the planes that kept us safe in WWII, and the fantastic pilots who flew them 🙏

I hope this concept becomes a complete success and a complete British invention . It's about time we started making what was once a great Aviation industry .
It won't because we can't afford it. The USA the richest nation in history could only afford 195 F-22's the last UK built jet was the Lightning 2 with 336 built and the Tempest will be more expensive per plane than an F-22 with a comparable or higher development budget.
We should instead get in now on the US next gen jet (plus buy some B-21 Raider's get a real bomber again at least those will be useful in a peer war and give the UK a capability only 3 other nations currently have). That would get more bang for every pound spent than the Tempest.
But alas instead of planning to win future wars we will throw billions at Tempest as a jobs program rather than actually gaining a useful war fighting ability.
@@Ushio01 You know nothing of the cold war and British Aviation . There has been many an Aircraft that has been stopped and American Aircraft bought instead of possible a much better Aircraft . Your one shot monopoly does not mean you will get the best . Do not get me wrong the F-22 :-) , but that isn't going to any one one other than the USA .....apart from China that got blue prints from F-22 and F-35 . Our so called latest fighters , been leaked . We need our own Aviation Industry , we can develop our own Aircraft for our own needs and employ our own . If you took the time to bother and look , the UK had been the leader in Aviation for a very long time but was ......taken out by Labour Governments and USA at the time .

@@Ushio01 Ha, found the village idiot. The F-22 is a non comparison. It was built at a time when 5th gen technology was so out of reach, only the US with enormous amounts of cash could ever endeavour to build such an aircraft. The Tempest is a 6th gen aircraft using technology that will be available to the UK in the 2030's. Meaning it won't, compared to the F-22, cost such a premium. Of course it will be a premium aircraft, but not costing $200 million per unit like F-22. It will most likely be comparable to when F-35 first came out at around $120 - 130 million and drop as production increases. And no. If the UK wanted a heavy stealth bomber it would've made it's own or bought B2 Spirit. But the fact that they didn't and retired the V Bomber fleet and went the multirole route with Tornado obviously shows it's intended bomber doctrine. B-21 will cost around $600 million a piece. So you're dreaming if you think the UK would ever go that route rather than buy 5-6 Tempest's.
What they are not telling you is that a laptop with a $100k laser and a webcam will take down any of these planes. Image recognition has gotten to a point where anything passing overhead can be tracked and a high powered laser can melt a hole through your plane in milliseconds. With roughly 1 million you could slice the wings off one of these planes in about 5 seconds. You would need to fly fast enough to be over the horizon by then. You will never be able to reflect enough light or cool the surface enough.
I love the fact that these fighters were named Typhoon and Tempest, totally badass. Some big names to live up to, I can see them parked next to each other- “My grandpa was in the war, oh really mine too !” Much love from the USA.

Fair enough we have F35's coming in however the F35 isnot a superiority fighter! meaning its easily out maneuvered in a dog fight situation. Going into 2020 and 2030 Britiain needs a stealth air fighter and the tempest project is working with Sweden and Italy. Companies proved worth working with in the past! As long as the project stays level headed we will be fine. The issues Britain had after the 2nd world war was having too many costly projects going on at once. After it was wittled to fewer projects we where fine. Ergo the challeneger, euro fighter, concorde, QEC etc.

Leaving the pilot on the ground can be a great idea with many benefits in some circumstances, but... if the enemy finds a way to interfere with the pilot/plane communication, then suddenly, you have no airforce!
Worse still, if the enemy hack into your communications, the enemy have your airforce!

Yeah I was thinking are these planes going to be solely sent pre-programmed on a mission? Because if they require a concurrent connection to be actively controlled this connection could easily be broken. Whether they get hack attacked or a blocking of signal, by deliberate signal jamming. It's dangerous. I don't know the ins and outs of the plan ofc but from my outside perspective it's just not viable with inherent weaknesses.
The drone that killed that General was pre-programmed on the mission right? Or was it actively controlled? With competent resistance I don't see unmanned doing well..

We have alot to thank them for, Enrico Fermi, Marconi, Olivetti, Volta. It never stops. The buildings we sit in are made of concrete, the Romans invented it. They taught us how to read and write, because when the Romans landed on our shores we were iliterate.
Leonardo build helicopters for our Queen Elizabeth Carrier. The Italians were the first to invent to jet plane in 1908 and so on. And it's in everything, they are the only country to go up against the Japanese in moto GP with Ducati, we don't even have one Brand anymore. They are building frigates for the USA and have Berretta and other brands in the gun industry, honestly sir, we genuinely have the incorrect opinion of the Italians, they taught the World engineering, while we lived in huts.
I am British and Italian, but if you read who was the most influential country in the World, it was Italy as they had two periods, Rome and renaissance period of Galileo Galilei and Leonardo DaVinci.
We had one period sir. It is sad how people view Italy, but growing up in the UK, I think it's based on envy, yet we are so similar. Even our National flag is Italian, the St George's Cross is Italian from Genoa. St George was a Roman Soldier and we rented it off them centuries ago to fend off the Pirates. We stopped paying the rent two hundred years ago sir.

I also know from experience that there are a great deal of older and middle aged men that hang out on any and all military forums just to complain. you are however right about service people, most of my crewmates watch forcesTV and avoid the comments all together.

a composite, networked, deep strike stealth fighter, with stealth fighter drones controlled by ai, and all served up with an insane AR OS, and fully upgradable, once this is built, it should have a decent 30 year lifespan, and represents a credible combat platform for the future, a flight of 3 jets, each controlling a further 3 drones each is a serious amount of firepower, the stealth combat drones are further along than the tempest, but its an evolution of the same design and build process, building the stealth drones has allowed bae systems to build experience and knowledge to attempt the tempest, and I fully expect it will be a very capable and high tech deep strike stealth fighter.
Pretty excited to see BAE and RR go it alone to develop a British aircraft again. I'm just wondering how are we catering for G-Loading on the pilots neck with a headset that will weigh considerably under high G turns? Is it that we are planning to have pilots remotely like the drones as we saw in the video? Take away the pilot from the cockpit and you get rid of the most limiting component in the weapons platform?
Tempest has the potential to be revolutionary in terms of future UK AirPower. I just hope our government doesn’t get in the way of it this time around, of it being realised!!🇬🇧
Brain machine interfaces with the fighter jet would be something amazing. Imagine controling the jet with just throught, reaction times would be insane.
I think I have to both agree and disagree with the "expert" at the end of the video. It certainly seems possible that there is a bias towards having a pilot in the aircraft among the leadership of the RAF, but I think the preference for an optionally manned aircraft vs a fully autonomous one, is possibly more so to er on the side of caution, as these aircraft (Tempest, and the EU and US 6th gen programs that are also facing this question), if they do go down the route of fully autonomous, they will be the first of their kind in history. Yes we already have drones, but they are nothing compared to what would be possible with a drone variant of what Tempest is shaping up to be. I think the idea of investing that much into such a system for it to be impossible to be manned, scares the higher ups. I can't say I blame them for being worried, either. The idea of if even a few small things go wrong, your entire fleet is now unusable. Admittedly, most of us here are likely clueless (due to classified info), as to how secure these systems would be, and how fail-safe they would be, but it is still a scary thought that a future RAF, or USAF or any Air Force, could find itself in a position where it cannot use its latest fighter due to forgetting to update Windows (of course that's a massive exaggeration/oversimplification of the question at hand, but just to illustrate my point). What do you lot think? Is that a justified worry? Do the (usually) brilliant armchair generals think optional manned to be superior, or wholly unmanned?

@@yoyo-lf3ld modern fighters like a typhoon would also become useless if hit effectively by an EMP. Pretty much all modern aircraft use fly by wire controls, so would be unable to use their aerodynamic surfaces in an attack. As for hacking, it is incredibly unlikely that a system even like a reaper or protector drone could be hacked into (to the point of it being controllable by an enemy or being disabled by them). It would require a multi-billion £ super computer just to hack UA-cams algorithm and steal you password, so good luck getting into a secure data stream used to control a UCAV anytime soon.
Humans will always have to be in the loop as humans can't be hacked and have our own self awareness for decision making. That's the only way to put a true fail safe in the system.
Having autonomous aircraft looks to be the way the military is going, but a human can most likely manually intervene remotely from a secure airbase, likely underground. Or a human can be in the aircraft itself and can override anything the computers are doing for the pilot and have a kill switch of some form that prevents outside interference from hijacking aircraft.
Lots of possibilities but humans have to be in the loop. 👍🏻
One limitation with highly digitised aircraft is that it is more vulnerable to cyber attack probably. Like you say, we're completely clueless rn, but that's an issue I can think of.
I thought the Tornado was brilliant in itself because of its variable geometry, making it able to have efficient modes at whatever speed it's at.
The English Electric Lighting, which was actually the Tornado's predecessor, was a great interceptor with a higher climb rate than a most modern fighters and managed to intercept a Concorde and a U2.
Some aircraft will get replaced with others just because a different capability is required for the time.
In a long war, this thing seems so complicated that we probably wouldn't be able to maintain a good enough production line to keep it in service. In ww2 the aircraft were highly modular, so we could make them in car factories.
This seems like a special operations thing more than anything if I'm honest - I don't see it fulfilling the QRA role.
@@indigophanta8288 on the points of fulfilling QRA, and being able to manufacture/keep in service enough of them. Well firstly, it will likely have some stats quite similar to typhoon. Supercruise will be almost assured, takeoff and landing distances will likely be similar, I assume a similar weapon loadout too, and more. So I don't see really how it could be unsuitable. As for difficulty in manufacturing and/or maintenance, well alongside the technology going into the plane becoming more advanced, so to do the technologies used to manufacture the aircraft. For example, BAE have touted a planned 30% of the aircraft will be built via additive manufacturing, whereas less than 1% of a typhoon is. This not only reduces the complexity of producing these components (one process per component vs 4 or 5 or more), but also reduces the cost of individual components, the lead time of the aircraft and the cost of the aircraft. All of the technology going into Tempest is designed to make it the deadliest fighter ever produced, but also to make it one of the most affordable. A typhoon costs ~€90million, which isn't that much less than an F-35 (A variant at least). The Tempest is designed to reduce this cost as much as possible, so as to enable us to procure more aircraft than with previous types.
The big problem with automated data assesement is that it only assesses data that conforms to a human programmer's check list of what is mental workload actually is. Fighter pilots are constantly thinking out of the box if they are good at what they do and may well return a result that does not "conform" to the computer model.
Very impressive and cant wait to see the tempest in action.
Look at the way the T7 red tail has been developed. 3 yrs from design to first flight. Impressive. So 10-14 yrs is definitely possible.

@@yoyo-lf3ld You realize that the majority of the military power western powers wield is already dependent on the function of mechatronic machines. Missile guidance systems, aircraft fire control, subsystem management, logistics databases...etc. Regardless of whether or not a human pulls the trigger, we are already reliant on 'robots' and machines for our protection. It is unlikely that it will happen all at once, but it is almost inevitable that machines will replace direct combatant roles.

I get strong feeling with the UK dissmissing a ban on military AI systems. And haven ordered semi AI subs and now semi AI fighter jets, makes me intrigued to see what there going to come up with next in terms of software upgrades to possibly a full AI system.
Hope we can have them sooner rather than later with the threats now getting ever closer to our doorsteps.

If you look at this now and think of it as the future my question is what more recent developments outside the spectrum of a demand for this aircraft could affect the comparative advantage or uniqueness of this aircraft considering the UK has the second largest aviation industry on earth?

I love the fact that instead of having potentially autonomous "wingmen" that instead he says that the Pilot will always be in control of them instead of always having AI control them, I am fine with AI being used as long as a human can take control of systems when needed and at will, it will help prevent a future like "Terminator" situation

7:40 - Anyone remember that old Clint movie from the 80s Fire Fox
at first i was worried they just want to spend money, but suddenly i realised how much sense it would make adding stealth to a eurofighter, basicly a dedicated, mid-sized, stealth air-to-air fighter could prob totally kick anythings ass short of the f-22
so they're gonna use their experience with the design. It could be a hot product. Other European customers already operating EF as an air-to-ait superority fighter a great upgrade route, and i think most all pilots would like stealth the most on the modern battlefield

@De Profundis well you could be right but then again, it's likely that others have worked out this particular threat already. Clearly, 6th gen planes are not being developed as a defence against the Taliban. They have another purpose. What might that purpose be? Could be the PRC! The Swedes are involved in this project too. But they mainly need these jets to face up to the Russians. The Brits need to do this too, but Russia is a minnow next to China. The perplexing thing might be to understand why the British are leading on this project rather than just buying from the Americans. I have a hunch that Tempest has some special sauce that will scare off any potential enemy. We won't know if that's true till I'm an old man. Regardless, if tempest is ultimately a failure, there's nothing to stop the UK from buying 6th gen planes from another country. But by developing Tempest, the UK is giving itself some choice in this matter.

the tempest program was one of the few good things done by the Italian governments after the tornado a collaboration with Great Britain is resumed I am sure that the best sixth generation fighter on the market will be born bae system leonardo and saab will do great things together

I hope it's not just another twin engined silver delta wing aircraft like the typhoon or the Gripen or the Rafael, those planes are world class and the greatest on our side of the North Atlantic, but that concept aircraft looks absolutely beautiful and I'd really like to see some new ideas come out for this next gen of fighter, rather than just looking like the generic Western European delta wing fighter

Having been a Mission Planner for Tornado and programming missions, getting a pilot to allow AI to take over and fly at super low level will be a big ask. The flight tracks will have to be millimetre perfect and maps really accurate.
Last time I stood beside a fighter jet was a typhoon at the farnborough air show. I thought that’s cool until I realised it was a prop with MDF wings 😂

Maybe a design that has interchangable wings. So that the jet can have multiple advantages depending on the objective. We always appear to design a jet that is not modular. This is a huge mistake imo.

F-22 was built in 1997 and is still more advanced than any fighter on earth, there’s a reason it’s only for usa... too deadly
@@dementiajoe5613 well it's built for a completely different mindset about how you do air wars, from a different era, that is almost certainly no longer valid. It also has a marginally better radar profile. Should be in no doubt the F-35 is a significantly more powerful and capable weapons platform than the '22.
@@dementiajoe5613 You have two aircraft sitting in a museum that are more advanced and deadly. The YF-23. Government bureaucrats made a terrible decision picking the F-22 based on prejudice and emotion when the YF-23 was the much better aircraft.
@@streaky81 The F-22 is an air-superiority fighter whereas the F-35 is not and is a multirole combat aircraft. They have completely different roles that complement each other. The F-22 is the better aircraft though. If you are doing war against Iran, China, North Korea, or similar adversaries then you will want the F-22 going in there first before the F-35 sweeps up. The F-35 is more vulnerable and has a lower ceiling than the F-22.

There will be more than that built , after the first bunch of planes are built they will become cheaper to build. Britain will have more money for such projects when it no longer has to fund the E.U millions of pounds a year. This all depends on the right government being in power , or it will be like a good few close but no cigar moments like before looking at you labour!

I guarantee they will tell us the £300million price tag is a bargin because they are the best in the world. The total program cost will be over £50billion, we will buy 20 of them. Nobody else in the world would buy one.They cannot fly long range, they can only hold two weapons, they cannot fly high, they cannot fly in warm weather, and they will never be used. I remember the Harrier jump jet 🤣 the most useless jet in the world. super slow, super heavy, no range, no weapons, but look, it can land vertically 😂 WHHYYY???? they basically sacrificed the purpose of the fighter jet to land vertically, despite never needing to land vertically, except in training.

What are these aircrafts the US military keeps seeing on radar, camera and by eye? 100,000 ft to sea level in a second, can take instant turns, no obvious propulsion system, can go between sea, air and space at will.

It’s a shame that our infantry are still using out dated kit. PVS 14s, CWS clapped out rifles, training recruits on SUSAT. But hey, as long as we spend billions on aircraft while the blokes who will inevitably fight in close quarters are still using the same weapons that we used in the 1980s. 👍

The SA80 was a terrible weapon system.
It suffered so many stoppages in the desert theatre.
It was first devised in the 1950s, at a time when NATO believed the future wars would be fought against the Soviet Union if they crossed the River Rhein.
The battles would take place in woodland, orchards, farmland, open grasslands, and the major European capital cities.
When deployed to the Gulf it malfunctioned due to sand, dust and heat.
None of us thought the same problems would occur over a decade later in Afghanistan and Iraq!
It was the same as us deploying "Snatch" Land Rovers, which offered virtually no protection from IEDs, larger small arms fire and RPGs.
Also our body armour was so ineffective, family members back home paid for upgraded/ better quality vests and sent them to the lads on deployment via post... absolutely disgraceful...
That's because the infantry won't exist soon. It took the gov weeks to come out and say they weren't getting rid of the tanks.
@@residentelect Also, on the body armour thing, which body armour are you talking about? The Osprey is an extremely rugged body armour. It is very heavy weighing up to 20KG restricting mobility but you can see plenty of articles about the Osprey body armour stopping sniper bullets with no damage done to the user.

not this time i think. The typhoon is already becoming outdated, Russia and China both have stealth aircraft and US is showing now signs of selling F22's to even their closest allies. We have no choice but to launch a 6th gen air superiority fighter.

In my opinion Tempest could potentially change the thrill of flying and turn it into a virtual reality environment rather than the real world environment and turn a plane into a flying computer. My idea of flying is to be able to fly a plane in the G-forces and the thrill of air to air combat.
There is no thrill when it's a life and death situation.
It is designed and intended to be an effective tool, not an adrenaline rush. The beauty of flight will always be captured in high performance stunt and leisure planes, but had no place in a combat environment
@@lord_scrubington well some time is combat pilots have to make spilt second decisions to preform evacive manumers to get out the way of incoming missiles or get an enemy plane off there back in dog fights. But I suppose having an AI assist to help with this may be helpful in more ways than one
If there setting up the cockpit like this then do they really need the pilot in the plane? You could pilot the plane from the safety of a ground bunker or a naval ship protected by the battle group. Very impressive if they can pull it off
