Making the Most Beautiful Trash Can in the World

- We were in need of a trash receptacle in our family room. I found a nice sized plant pot that I could reuse as a trash container. I wanted to make a wood turned wrapper around this plastic pot. What made this project complicated was its size. It had to be big enough to completely encase the plant pot. I made the project in three sections: two sections for the body of the wrapper that covers the pot and a third section that is a rim at the top that holds the plant pot in. The rim is also shaped so that it is removable and laps the inner edge of the plant pot so things that are thrown into the container don't get stuck between the pot and the woodturned wrapper. The inside did not need to be pretty. It just had to fit the plant pot. I spent time making the outside of the trash can beautiful. I made a section of the outside with a chaotic segmented pattern made from scrap wood I found around the wood shop. I like the metaphor of trash on the outside and trash on the inside.

Frank... Your craftsmanship, both with wood and "film", are top notch. Thanks for the entertainment every time you post a video.
As a janitor myself I do believe that's got to be the most beautiful garbage can I've ever seen
Hilarious! Love the news coverage of this event. I have a shelf project going on that has eluded the media for weeks now! 😂
Outrageous amount of work. Complication on top of complication. I admire your creativity and the perseverance to do this type of work. 👍🏻
Only an artist would spend hundreds of hours making a waste paper basket! It’s lovely.
1. a peg could make orientation easy, should you require it for construction reasons. Easy to retrofit.
2. the top should've had increasingly smaller patterns in it. Would've both matched and counter balanced the lower portion which is gorgeous.
All in all, one of your best small~mid size projects!
The peg would be a nice detail. I like the smaller scale idea.
It might be easier to just add an alignment rare earth magnet. No finnicky peg into a hole problem that always seems to show itself when your in a hurry to someplace and all you would have to do is rotate the top until it the magnets snap together.
Why do you always want it so smooth and continuous !! Waves ..discontinuous waves ... chaotic waves ....I want these in your creativity ... Make it too much abstract man ..love you old man
I really liked that top down sped up shot of the lathe process. Great work!
Wow, a trashcan version of Klimt's "Kiss" - that's something I wasn't expecting to see today.
The editing with the ‘news item’ is a masterpiece.
Holy guacamole! That’s just beautiful! OMG The commercials and news headlines had me howling!
I agree, the most beautiful trashcan in existence.
This is the most the super - hyper - awesome trash can indeed!
I always find myself pausing the video's to see/find/spot the funny little in-jokes and details you always seem to put in your video's. Truely enjoy them and thanks for yet another smile on my face!
Would be cool if the chaotic pattern slowly got more dark wood in there, bleeding into a solid walnut top, a challenge for another day haha.
Great project and video as usual!
I like that.
The $3000 trash can. So much work!
Never thought I'd see a wood turning that would remind me of Klimt! Beautiful!
The randomized pattern of wood pieces came out looking a lot like the patterns on the modern US Army camouflage uniforms. This is almost certainly the worlds coolest trash can.
I find myself watching your uploads and realise that I have been smiling all the way through. Thank you 🧡
I like the random pattern. Creating chaos can be fun.
You have one heck of a reporter - the news was pretty funny. I think having the chaotic pattern bleed into the top rings would have been pretty, but since you have solid rings on the bottom, the top looks great, to me.
What a great video! I made a cutting board with the chaos pattern, it was fun.
One could pull a few sticks out of each iteration as you go along with the chaos plank gluing and cutting, and have segments of increasing amounts of chaos.
Frank, Much nicer trash can than I’ve ever seen!
The news chyron is the best! Well done Frank.
I’m so impressed with your channel. I made wooden baby rattles and other lathe products semi professionally for awhile and I almost exclusively used a skew chisel for all the turning. I felt like I was wasting a lot of time keeping the gouges sharp and switching back and forth. I put a grinding stone on the outboard end of the lathe and used that to touch up the skew when it got dull. Some days when I walked away from the lathe there would be a waist high pile of chips with my body imprint in it. I went back to machining and now run a machine shop for an aerospace company. You’ve inspired me to bust out the cnc router I bought years ago but never got around to fixing. I just ordered a new Masso G3 controller for it this morning
Is frank's super power Wood Working, Video Editing, or just pure patience?
We all love the CNC Frank, but im glad you're realising it's not always the best tool for the job, old school is cool. Beautiful work, yet again
It’s a good day to binge watch Frank 😁
The world 🌎‘s fanciest trash can!
Great video!
What an unexpectedly lovely trash can--that 'chaotic' style is really eye-catching. Jon Peters also wrapped a plastic plant pot [he used a large squarish plant container] with wood, but his project remained an outdoor plant pot.
It's great to see your imaginative projects but we don't all have your level of skill or equipment so your simpler ones are very good too.
another beautiful project. I do agree that the top would look good with a less abrupt end to the chaos but i mean, it's spectacular as is. Your filmmaking skills have always been incredible but the faux CNN on the TV was so unexpected and delightful. You reign supreme
👏😂 Just great! Oregon man is wood working and film making genius 👍
Stunning. The title says it all. Definitely the most beautiful trash can in the world.
I'm loving these random segmented projects!
Should be a way to give this one two likes or five stars or something.
So nice. A brass ring would be like a ribbon.
I've been watching you for a few years and you never cease to amaze me with your creations. I was brought up working with my dad in his shop for many years, so I learned alot about woodworking, and now that I'm buying my first house I'm looking forward to setting up a small shop for myself. I aspire to be as skilled as you are in your craft. Thank you for your content.
I love the look of that random pattern Frank!
That's a very nice trash can Frank! I've seen end grain cutting boards that have used the chaotic pattern before but never on a segmented project.
Ya ya.... We all know you done good and we're all super impressed! (As usual...) But, little did you know - - - You have captured my brain.......................... thank you.
Thank you, Frank. That was excellent.
The best looking trash bin holder. It looks so nice up against your shelfs.
This was a very neat build for something so menially mundane as a rubbish bin. I would have to say that the editing and the big screen background humor was just as interesting as the build. I had to pause more than once until I stopped laughing so I did not miss anything.
the news coverage bit was hilarious 👍♥
A lot of work for a garbage can but absolutely beautiful and very entertaining
I had to watch this twice. The video insert work on the TV was hilarious! I'll just avoid the news SEGMENTS...get it? Segments? ok ok...
I'm curious just how heavy the whole thing ended up being. As for alignment, you can just drill a hole on one side and a dowel on the other, the easiest solution and impossible to screw up.
Certainly the MOST BEAUTIFUL trash can I've seen.
i think having a darker wood ring for the top would have looked very nice as well
Remarkable attention to the future, albeit unknown, details of creation.
Thank you.
You are great to watch. Always careful, methodical and creative!
I really like your humor. Besides great work and narration of course.
Thanks -- I always eagerly look forward to your videos, regardless of topic. Again, thanks.
I love the news piece, especially the lower third title :)
Only you can make a trash can interesting! I love it.
Gives off Klimt's The Kiss vibes.
XD
I love it. Cheers from Argentina!
Mr Howard:
I don't know how to describe your work, I dare to classify it as "Splendidly Beautiful and Perfect". Actually you are a master in the Art of Carpentry. Thank you for sharing each of your wonders. God bless you!
editing is on point for this one
Very nice project. The artistry and craftsmanship is wonderful to watch.
This was so funny! And for some reason the oversized machines used made it look even more comical! 😂😂😂
What a fun project, Frank!
GREAT project Frank - I like your news channel! !! !!!
Amazing! You nailed it again Architect
Beautiful, Frank, but a lot of work (for a trash can? - lol). Great job.
Bill
Beautiful random pattern! I'm also fan of your helmet 😍
that pattern would make an AWESOME face for a low sitting MCM style entertainment center..
What an incredible project. Thanks for sharing. Your videos are my favorite thing on youtube.
Just beautiful work as always…if you were to do it agin, I’d voter for team ‘let it bleed into the top!’ :)
Amazing. A metal inlay could be a good alignment marker between top and bottom. Brass or brass powder and resin maybe.
it would be amazing if he did the same (glue up, cut in half randomly, flip around and repeat) thing but took sections out/didn’t include them in the next round. and made rings so in the end it would kinda look like a gradient that gets busier and more chaotic. like this pot but the randomness is is large and chunky at first and then gets really fine and more detailed the higher up or in one certain spot instead of it being a “regular/normal” pot and then random
Great idea!!
Great work Frank... Stunning. 👍
Thanks for the video, the container, and the trash!
It is beautiful as is, nice one Frank
The finished piece reminds me of something of Gustav Klimt
Love this one. Great work.
Never underestimate an Oregonian with a woodshop
I feel like the next iteration Frank will make the upper section look like the world map. 😉
I think you're overthinking it, Frank. Let it be what it wants to be ... a fancy trash can with holes in the liner bottom.🤣🤣
The top pattern reminds me of Klimt. Fantastic!
This piece reminds me of a Klimt painting “The Kiss”
Check out that "Walking on the surface of Mars" respirator.
Frank is as much a video artist as a woodworker. Really impressive.
Somewhat reminds me off the work by Gustav Klimt. Nice job.
This is art through and through: Filming, editing, narration. Plus - of course - the object made.
Every time we think we see the creme of the creme from you, You turn around a prove us wrong in a nice way. Thank you
trash can? this would be an amazing indoor flower pot
Dang, the fanciest I get is a walmart bag in a old basket. Your skill is amazing!
the randomized glue-up looks like desert digital camouflage fabric. regarding gluing rings, I've found that using band clamps often displaces segments leading to cracks. So instead I just use gumbands for clamping, which makes it easy to align the wedges. I don't worry about bond strength when do I this because plenty of strength is achieved when the rings are stacked and glued.
This looks like a Gustav Klimt!
Frank, great work as, as usual, a classic piece of designed, functional pieces of furniture. My 2cents worth is that, without a plastic bag inside the pot, small pieces of rubbish may go through the drainage holes in the pot and make it a chore to empty.
I would suggest leaving a bit of space around the top of the pot so you can put a trash bag in there.
Beautiful! It reminds me of Gustav Klimt.
Hey Frank, you should make another one of these and make it look like a basketball net. One light colored wood and one dark, I think that would look really cool 😊
Yer still amazing Frank.
I enjoy the work that you do, no matter what you do. Love it! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great job!! The random pattern reminds me a bit of a Kandinsky painting or cubism. Really nice idea!
And so much work for a trash can :D I made a wooden trashcan myself and remember thinking "what am I doing with my life?" Haha, But in the end it makes something ugly like trash blend in much more
It reminded me of Klimt.
@@tavdy79 Now I need to make a coffee table with that pattern.
@@frankmakes Add some brass to the pattern as a nod to Klimt's love of gold leaf.
Kandinsky's paintings literally make me feel sick, Frank's bin does not, although I could throw up in it.
One of your best yet. Thanks!
Beautiful. Reminds me of Gustav Klimt's paintings
A thing of beauty. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very inspiring! It's a piece of art and a part/piece of trash haha. Very cool!
