  • In this video, I walk through the steps to remove and replace a valve cover on a 2007 BMW X5 - E70. Steps would be the same for replacing the valve cover gasket.
Unfortunately, mine had to be replaced because of a high-pitched wheezing sound emitted from the valve that is built into the valve cover.
The original BMW part number for this is : 11127552281 (verify fitment for your car)
    Some tools required:
    clip removal tool
    #5 metric allen wrench
    8mm socket and wrench
    10mm deep socket
    13mm socket
    15mm socket
E8 Torx socket (may need to be shaved to be thinner to access)
    E10 Torx socket
    T25 Torx bit
This process should apply to the following model years:
    2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013

For the rear wiring harness, remove the plastic box that around the 2 cable bundles. This will release a ton of slack on them. Also this is the best time to change the spark plugs

thanks for you time and efforts to make this video, it is quite detailed. I had this job done by a bmw dealer about 6 years at a cost of $1700 or there about. Crazy thing is that this valve gasket is leaking again, and as before, it smokes like crazy as it drips on the exhaust manifold. To think that the first gasket lasted about 9 years, and now this one has gone so soon. The car only has 88k miles so it is not abused in any sense. Just today I got blasted with smoke inside the cabin from it, and I was hoping to try to do this job myself. I just got to keep convincing myself to do it 😃, but will see.

Thanks. If you have the tools, basic skills and patience, you should be able to do it. Just list each step as you and document with pictures in case you forget anything.

Great video. I replaced the VC on my 2010 X5 E70 30i.T he new valve cover comes with all the bolts but three of them. I figured out what part numbers they were and bout them from FCP Euro. The center bolt is 11127558453 and the two other ones that go on the lower part of valve cover were the metal bracket is are 11127558454. Believe me they are the exact ones, I bout them and installed them.

Great thanks!!! Just finished mine today, in 30 degree weather! You did a great job with video and narration! All the best. Remember the AWD and CSD error will come up after disconnecting the battery. Once started turning the wheels to max out both left and right will fix clear that error code!

I replaced the VC gasket on my 2008 X5 and still had a leak. Finally figured out it was micro cracks in two locations of the valve cover. I used a die grinder to v-groove the cracks and filled them with devcon. Leaks are now fixed. It ridiculous that they crack and apparently this is not that uncommon. I’m not about to pay over $400 for a new valve cover.

this job is much easier when u take off the bracket on the back of the valve cover , the bracket that the top plastic engine cover bolts on to, especially on the reinstall

Also, the eccentric shaft sensor will leak internally and need to be replaced before they fail. If you remove the connector and find oil in the pins it means that oil is migrating up the sensor into the pin area. It will fail sooner or later once you find oil in this location.

The gasket needs to be attached with special glue to the cover to make sure it stays in place, there is no way to know if it is in place because once you put the cover down you can not see the gasket and it can come off easily

Excellent video! Thanks for sharing this, without your video I dont think I am adventurous enough to try this. I had successfully taking off the cover. However I wonder (i) if you still have the list, can you post the procedure, so that I can use to install things back?(ii) As you mentioned the new cover comes with a bracket on the upper left corner and it is hard to install the cover back due to the extra bracket. Do you see a problem if I discard the piece of plastic (bracket)?

@@yassirc3681 My problems were not so much the mechanical components of the engine (i.e. pistons, valves), but rather the seals, sensors, cooling system and vanos. These engines leak easily and these other parts are the weak points..

What would happen if you don't disconnect the battery before unplugging connections? And what symptoms would you get if you don't have the valvetronic unit re-calibrated? My X5 started shaking and turning off after mechanic replaced the gasket. He blamed it on the coolant leak from the expansion tank thats causing the sensor to send a signal to the car to turn itself off so it wouldn't overheat with no coolant inside. Can someone help me out?

    • @DIYGuyUSA

Look at 16:10 of the video. Check the breather tube that is supposed to be connected on the very back of the valve cover. If this is not connected properly, the car will not start properly. Otherwise, you would need to go back and check all hoses and electrical connections in order.

A loud wheezing sound from the engine bay. I believe the check engine light did come on for a while and then went away. I would not recommend using this video as a way to diagnose the problem. This is only intended as instructions for replacement if needed.

@@DIYGuyUSA a loud wheezing sound from the engine bay is indicative of a leaking valve cover and gasket?

    • @DIYGuyUSA
      @DIYGuyUSA  5 років тому +1

@@rshotty9039 The wheezing sound may indicate a clogged/defective PCV valve which is built into the valve cover. This is not the same as having a leaking valve cover gasket. That would usually show leaking oil. Check out videos on youtube by searching "BMW pcv wheezing". You'll find ones that have the sound in the video.
