Opeth is a huge rabbit hole of a band. They're progressive death metal for this era, although they've dropped all the growling for almost 10 years now. They have songs that are pure beauty even to your grandma haha.
You're pretty spot on in a lot of your interpretation. This album is a loosely told story about a possessed man who murdered his mother and escapes away, though it's not completely considered a concept album.
Guarantee you my other song is much easier to digest in one go but yeah opeth is my favorite of favorites for all their diversity and composition.
Hope i didn't lay it on too thick for a first go XD
I think you should for sure hear All Things Will Pass from their latest album. I think you'll feel much more at home with that sound because there's a lot of Black Sabbath feel. It's not often a reactor gets new Opeth reccomended early. I hope you get some of their fans to swing by and help out though :P

Love Opeth, and Harlequin Forest is a perfect introduction imo, good choice. (Also, it's usually referred to as growl/growling).

I definitely liked this song and look forward to more. Yup growling works. Someone else said guttural. I think these both apply!

I’d love to see more Opeth!!! I’d recommend ”Hessian Peel” from them next! An amaaazing song and another journey. ✨
I think the word you’re looking for to describe Mikael’s growls is ”guttural”.

haha guttural is definitely the word I was looking for. I have added your song to my list.

The trees are the people he killed , he feels guilty so he goes to the harlequin forest where everyone goes to kill themself. “With no one by their side , are they forgiven?” And the demon says “There goes another , vapor hands released the blade (he killed himself) , insane regrets at the drop (people who commit suicide and survive tell about them instantly regretting it) , instruments of death before me (there are two instruments of death : one of them is the blade and the other one is himself since he killed himself). He also can’t sleep because his guilt hunts him down. He feels like this guilt haunts him. He probably killed some people that he loved.

It's hard to decide which Opeth songs to recommend because they truly have so many masterpieces, and also we don't know what you like yet.
Perhaps "The Baying Of The Hounds" or "Deliverance" next if you liked "Harlequin Forest".

Nice! It is considered Growling imo. A good next Opeth song would be either Blackwater Park or The Drapery Falls. Looking forward, Cheers!

The guttural vocal style you heard is called growling. People often mistakenly call it "screamo" which is the incorrect term. Screamo is actually the name of a subgenre of the music genre "Emo".
Opeth are amazing musicians. I hope you do more from them soon :)

This vocal type is growling or death metal vocals. The outro is longer and it was cut in this video
