📚Description: I bought a cool R9 reissue among other guitars from a collector. This one was supposed to have NOS Tim Shaw PAFs in it, but unfortunately, that's not quite what was in it - but at least this top is exceptional!

Best thing about missing last nights episode is two troglys in one day! lol
That top is beautiful!
I love the flames!! Keeper for me.
The right word for that top is "prismatic!"😎
Man, if I ever bought a Les Paul, it would sure be nice to have Trogly inspect it first!
I always think people say rat tail not wrap tail lol
Guilty
i can’t lie this has gotta be my favourite channel on youtube rn, something about him reviewing guitars, i haven’t missed a video in like 3 months 😂
Interesting in that it has modern wiring with tone cap to PU lead at the pot, rather than 1950's wiring at the wiper side of the volume pots.
That's how they did even the reissues in those days. Not sure when they started doing it vintage correct
Interesting to note about that bridge pickup. The winds must be about half that of the neck pickup but still sounds pretty good. It would give you a ton of head room for a wicked clean sound
At least they scammed with Gibson pickups. Can’t remember the full story because it was 30 years ago but a guy came into the local guitar shop looking to sell something he bought and yeah the really rare expensive pickups it was supposed to have were replaced with brand x junk!! He was livid and tried to blame the store tech Mike (son of the owner) and the people in the shop that knew Mike immediately defended him and almost tossed the guy out the door.
That’s not what I was expecting as well. I was expecting a 2007 Gibson USA - like my breathtakingly beautiful and super-sexy - AA Flamed Maple Top - Heritage Cherry Sunburst - Gibson Les Paul Standard, with Gold Top Hat Control Knobs.
I also own a totally awesome 1998 Gibson - Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Standard Plain Top - with factory-installed, Nickel-Plated, Grover Rotomatics - and what I suspect is a lighter-in-colour - Honduran Rosewood Fretboard.
🎊🍒🌄🎸🌇🥂✨
That finish will always give me ominous shades of Tommy Shaw from the late 70s in Styx, the character played by Lea Thompson in Howard the Duck and the on-screen depiction of Steve Clark in the made-for-VH1 film Hysteria: the Def Leppard Story.
The only thing that every owner should do is make sure they keep the COA. I will never buy a custom shop without a COA.
I mean does it really worry you on a players grade instrument?, you can still tell preety easily if its a legitimate custom shop Gibson without it
@@jensoncremasco3352 considering this will post for $4k+, yeah it matters. Most player grade CS guitars still have the COA regardless of their condition. I would completely avoid a CS with no COA. Only case candy that really matters. Probably the most common sense item to keep with a luxury item. Tons of other player grades you can get CS or not that will save you money. An R9 with no COA should not be anywhere near the same price of an R9 with one. You can say it’s not the big of a deal, but it’s a buyer’s market and many buyers will completely avoid a CS guitar without a CoA. I’d tell anyone to just get a wildwood standard over a custom shop with no CoA. I get that it’s not what people are mainly buying but it’s a pride thing for splurging on a Custom. Also, like mentioned, no excuse to not include it. It shouldn’t be anywhere else than in the guitar case or somewhere the owner can remember so that they can include it in a sale. Arguably more important than the OHSC since you can buy lifton cases from Gibson that have no distinguishable difference than the one the reissue came with.
I just love how he kept every other little thing with it but not the COA. 🤣
@@StephenG1991The COA's from that era are a regular sized piece of paper with a page protector over it. Many of them were lost or destroyed due to their large size
Incredible fretboard.
it's Madagascar rosewood, Gibson doesn't use it anymore
@@brunoantony9257 I can tell. Gibson has gone to Indian. My 2001 Tom Murphy r7 is Madagascar. And it’s gorgeous. The guitar looks and feels like a vintage piece. My 2017 R8 board looks like crap. But the tone and the top got me
@@erickmo1188 I have three '06 custom shop Gibsons--R9, R6, and SG, all have amazing Madagascar boards. Wish they would go back to using it.
@@brunoantony9257 seriously!!! The board is so much richer, with denser grain and smaller pores which makes it as beautiful as Brazilian to me. I’m not one that subscribes to the idea that I could hear the difference between the species of rosewood. But I definitely appreciate the look and feel to the Madagascar and Brazilian. I’d almost say that they are equals.
The word sexy definitely applies to that top! What a beauty.
There’s a supposed 2007 r0 (serial number 0 xxxx) cherry sunburst with heavy wear and checking and fogged up hardware for $4495 at a shop near me. Not sure if the aging is factory but it looks on par with the current Murphy aging. Plays and sounds fantastic and comes with an Anvil road case.
Tempting…
That is a cracking top !! The Madagascan rosewood from that time was really beautiful. There was some fantastic wood used in that era.
Would love to see that top in person. Its pretty active watching on my TV. Well dont you have a set of Tim Shaws in your stock? Just saying. I wouldnt try it on something that im putting back on just in case but scrubbing bubbles for fiberglass and plasics cleans pretty well. Maybe try that on something you don't care if it does get damaged first.
That is one fine piece of ace that top is beautiful sounds amazing to my ears
Salutations Austin!
Absolutely beautiful flame maple top on that 2007 59 Les Paul reissue, R9.
Particularly great movement on that top!
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
Happy Independence Day!
☀️✨🙏🏻🇺🇸
I have an '05 R8 that weighs 8.75 lb. I love it.
Beautiful flame
There are so many different grain patterns on each Les Paul, and no two are the same. This is the charm of the Les Paul, and it makes me want to buy a new one.
Wow, that is great wood grain on that top.
My favorite reissue, with all the rock stars buying up the r9s they are getting hard to find nice clean originals. That's if you can afford to buy them and just find the ones that are worth buying. I find alot of junks out there that people think they have a gold mine that they are trying to sell and sit on them and ask ridiculous prices for some junk that's not worth crap. But that is the thrill of the hunt. Thanx Trogly another good episode. Happy hunting and playing and paying for this disease. Take care I got that from you bud.....
I scored a mint 2007 Silverburst a few yrs back
Wow that is one amazing flame top and gorgeous fretboard on this R9, nice find! Weird the bridge pup works with that reading. But no one's going to buy this for the pickups.
I just use a tiny screw driver and gently pry the cover off if needed.
The colors remind me of a Joe Perry/Slash tobacco sunburst '59
Cool top! I like the waves on the upper top.
If your suction cup is too big, try a small piece of duct tape. Press it on and you can lift it up easily.

9:05 quote “pretty gnarly stand rash”
Did you mean to say that it was a pretty gnarly aniline dye bleed thru from bing hung in the same stand as a cherry back aniline dyed R8 or R9 reissue? I usually think of rash as being a disruption of the finish by abrasion or impact. The rash causing some distortion or loss of the physical finish. What is displayed in the video appears to be a red stain that was absorbed into the neck of the guitar. This staining is what often happens when a cherry back historic reissue R8 or R9 is stored in the same place as this guitar for instance. This is why you should never buy used guitar stands with black instrument contact material. Thank you for clarification.
You're thinking too hard about it. It's just called stand rash, even though it's not abraded like you'd see in buckle rash.
@@f3uibeghardt522 Is road rash the same as a tattoo?
That's a beautiful guitar and sounds pretty good too!
Best episode
Hello Trogley, love your channel. One suggestion, I notice the differences in the thickness Les Paul bodies through the years also with epipephone. Could you start including body thickness measurements? Say thickness at the pickup switch and the tail or the horn. Just a thought :)
Beautiful top!
Love the ' Shania Twain 'effect on that baby !...Love them Tobacco Bursty's ! Thanks Trogly !
Love the movement in this top. This one gives me Halloween/tiger vibes.
Thanks again 👍🇺🇸
That is a TOP
beautiful guitar. tobacco burst with dark back. i love it personally. red backs get old after a while
Bookmatched perfection!
Evening Troglodytes!!! Great top.
Can you not use a guitar pick to get under that rear round cover. People use them all the time for disassembling phones, netbook, laptops etc, without hurting a thing.
Thanks for taking the time to share so much knowledge. Very cool stuff. :)
I use a hoover to pull off stuck back plates, works 9 times out of 10
What a top on that baby 🤘
For stuck control plates take a small flat head screwdriver into one of the screwholes and pry it up, shouldn't do any damage.
Toothpick. Softer material is safer.
The kind used for eyeglasses
Gonna scratch stuff with that...
@@PNWJEEPER01 obviously you don’t pay attention. You put it in the screw hole.
@@billyc6678Oh, yeah; my bad, you’re obviously right. After 35 years of being a college trained instrument repair technician with continuing education who owns three full service sales and repair shops, I’m probably just not paying attention. Golly; what is a “control” plate anyhow, Dad?
Beautiful
Looks like someone put their name on the back of the headstock where you can see it with a black light.
.93? Yay But that "touch up" looks like some crazy damage in the pics
Hey trog would be cool to make video about pickups during the norlin era. I know you like that period of time.
As the 400 series pickups are seemingly marked the same, how can you tell which is which? Like 494, 498t, etc..
Usually the resistance as the higher numbers are generally hotter output. R and T are just rhythm (neck) and treble (bridge)
@@joermnyc That's kinda what I was guessing. I could have looked it up, but thought it would be nice for us to learn collectively. Thanks Joe!
to bad about the pickups cool top !!
Mine shows blacklight difference on the headstock as well.
Needs gold hardware, black pickup rings. Perfect, absolutely, perfect.
What a beauty
Can you use a stopper from a toy dart gun. Just curious
was expecting a bigger premium for that top!
My god the pickups have got some MOJO!!!
That's wild! That top seems to have a 3D/Holographic effect.
Badass top.
The bridge pick up might be wired in parallel..
That is a beautiful guitar 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
What a terrible scam on the pups.🎸☹️
And touched up dings not disclosed? Wow.
haven’t watched trogly play in a while and danggg he sounds good. keep it up trog 🙏🏾🙏🏾
That's a keeper. Very nice!
They may not be era correct, but if that was my guitar, I would have speed knobs on it
Functionally tophats don’t work as well for my hands as speed knobs.
But yeah some people prefer tophats for that reason.
I have a guitar that came with tophats, they got swapped out for speed knobs
But YMMV
I'll find it and replace them SP££D knobs off and shall be replacing them to my satisfaction and your frustration with chicken head oven Knobs. HI YAW!!!
@@DosHemperor hey, if it’s your guitar, use whatever you want, won’t bother me, as I said, YMMV.
Chicken head knobs are cool.
That is a gorgeous guitar, that top and fretboard is beautiful. I don't mind the brown back, suits the top more
Stanfe stamp on back I have ? On
If you just can get one guitar and one amps, whats your choice?
Can you trade that guitar for my Teal SG 61 that is nowhere near as valuable?
Those pickup and pots needs more investigation.
Yahoo
in my opinion the bridge pick up is awful, nice top.
I thought the pickups sounded great
I thinknlp guitars dnt look goodnwitj pick guards exept wjen going for a historic 50s look
so what do you think the pickups actually are Austin ?
Strange lol spell check
All ice white plastics look so wrong to me. Sure, my R8 has white pickup rings, but the poker chip and pickguard are cream
Okay, seems like lighting or angles for that one
So true I have the same!
All about your stilettos really. Red go with anything.
Only here in the far-flung future is the genius of Trogley clear: Kudos to the number one salesman at Gibson, and the numero uno provider of 'Les Paul porn", (three words that have probably never appeared together in print before). Apropos of nothing, if I were high in the ranks at Gibson I would be lobbying to create our first $100,000 instrument, which will sell out in a New York minute and be flipped for more in the aftermarket, and which I have no doubt they are busy at work on, limited to say 100 units or so, gross income ten million which is a piss in the bucket for them but will facilitate the sale of countless other, lesser instruments such as sub-three thousand dollar Standards and even cheaper Juniors and SG's, which are their bread and butter.
Do apply your vision to your own business and let Trogly review the expensive purchase.
As if.
Z is for late.
D is for koksh!
FINALLY A VIDEO AT 7 PM THANK U TROGLY
If I sent a photo of back of headstock could you tell me more about it ? Please think of replying
✌️
🧈🧈🧈
OMG.
It needs gold accessories to compliment top even more
Trogly needs a suction pig for the back plates!😹😹
Or just wrap tape around his fingers sticky side up.
ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ 💯👍Hi
Nice top but horrible pickups.
Yo
