📚Description: This 4th of July, we document a Map Guitar Prototype that belonged to the guy who made of these for Gibson - James Hutchins. I purchased the "Poster Child" and this "Prototype" from his estate through Carter Vintage in 2022. It seems most of these guitars were completed as far as electronics and wiring outside of the factory, but that doesn't change the the fact they were Hutch's guitars! His signature is found in the control cavity.
Happy 4th of July Guitar!

I’d love to see a big artist get one of these and make a mark for every city they play in.
I like that… With a little pearl dot inlay. Now you’re thinking!
Cool idea.
Some of them might be able to do some colouring in, what a waste of time
Suggestion for next time you encounter that strap button issue: many straps come with a leather lace. It’s meant to string up to the headstock, running the lace just above the nut. Classical players do that all the time.
And if all else fails, find a spare shoelace to attach to the strap lead and tie it off this way.
I would have wrapped that acoustic lace around Florida. Then again, that’s what may have broken Florida off before.
It’s less common these days to have a leather lace, but I have a few I have kept, but I don’t use them for the strap, they have all became decorative
Not only is it prone to a headstock break, but also a Florida and New England break!😅
I went back and watched one of your old videos "I Bought Something Good From Norm's Rare Guitars". You got a guitar and a T-shirt from Norm's, and I just got a T-shirt from Norm's Guitars. Maybe one day I can get a Guitar from him.
Trogly, on acoustic guitars without a strap button it is customary to tie a shoelace behind the nut and tie the strap to that. Some strap companies actually ship straps with the shoelace. I have them on some older Fender straps I have. For next time :) Happy 4th
Many straps these days come with a strong cord or leather string . I wouldn't trust a regular shoe string.
You'd think it would have star shaped inlays. Oh well, missed a perfect opportunity, i guess.😂 And, what if they did the routing (and covers) in the shape of the Alaska and Hawaii😂
Thanks Trogg, this was pretty good, great video, man!🤘
~Edit, but NOT a missed opportunity to play the national anthem though!!
Rock on!🤘
some of the 2000s versions do have the star inlays. Good idea on the backplates!
Trog, have you seen the map guitar case thats on sale on Reverb?
I don't see one
I use to own a Spirit II back in the early to mid 90s. I actually bought it used for $250. Later I traded it in and bought a Kramer. 😢 Now they're worth $1,500!!
Rule number one of Guitar Club… Never sell a guitar
At least you got a Kramer out of it 🤟🏻
It's crazy how much of the coastline has changed due to erosion and climate change.
We need an updated smoother edged version of this guitar today. 😂
With a wooden overdrive pedal shaped like Alaska, a Reverb pedal shaped like the Hawaiian islands, and something else shaped like Porta Rico.
Love the history/details Trogly Thank you!
Mine sounds awesome! Thanks Trog.
Mappy 4th of July🎉
What would be neat if probably pretty gaudy is a map guitar with the individual states inlaid on the top.
Happy Birthday Trogly and US! Cheers from Canada- what US would have been if they drank the tea instead of tossing it, and the French still owned Louisiana.
Sir, Thank you again
Is Alaska sold separately?
I agree about the Spirit. I remember seeing one in a Ketchikan, Alaska music store in 1983 and falling in love with it...I finally got one in 2023! You just never see them in stores, not out here in the PNW anyway... the Spirit II, was a great model and I wish they reissued those... AFAIK, they've never reissued that model.
Happy 4th guys
Salutations Austin!
Thank you for reviewing this USA Map Guitar Prototype!
It sounds great, I would not change anything.
Instead of attaching the strap to the tuning machines, I would recommend that you use a leather shoestring to tie around the headstock near the nut to one end of the guitar strap, just like some people do with acoustic guitars.
Thanks again for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome Independence Day!
☀️✨🇺🇸🎸🌟
Years ago a music store I loved had one of these and it was still there until the day they closed down. Nobody wanted it then - I bet anyone I know would do anything to get one now, including me.
Happy Birthday Trogly and my fellow Citizens.
Nice choice playing the SSB clean!
Happy Independence Day to all . I tried to enter the contest when I was in my 20s . I wish Theyd do a reissue of The Spirit. I really liked the design of those. As far as straps depending on the brand you buy many ofvthem come with a paracord type string unless it leather then it will have a leathrr cord that can tie by the truss rod cobmver ahead of the nut.
I can't remember these things being "marketed." To me, it sounds like an ES-335!
Part of the original 13 colonies… And the original 13 comments. OK I get a cookie, a waffle and a Grinch sticker for my lapel.
I purchased one of the Epiphone map guitars and find it to be a very good player when standing up. The sound is so midrang-ey that it sounds like there is a half-cocked wah in the signal chain.
DAY FOUR, All I want is a 1954 Stratocaster review.
Great and quirky
Always fun to see another map guitar!
I’ve got one of the other Maudie Moore bodies. Let me know when we’re going to start having conventions :).
you don't have an old acoustic strap that attaches under the strings beyond the nut at the headstock??
Why’d he say CHYNA like that 🤣
I remember seeing josh ramsay play a maple leaf guitar lmao
Wow!!!
Sounds good with a bit of distortion.
good Trogly sire, do consider reviewing the Nick Valensi signature Riviera, cuz it's got P-94 pickups from what I remember and is definitely different.
(Also Trogly sire, consider using a shoelace acoustic strap?)
Have you ever thought about putting on a hootenanny strap button on the back of the headstock like Fender put on some of their old basses. You should try to find one to do a review of.
Only watching to see if you throw it on the scale
Looks like they routed out a bigger channel for the b and the o. Or they accidentally knocked those nibs off and then try to drop fill with something that has sunk in over time.
Can only imagine how Alaskan people must feel about it ☹️
You should put all the extra The Les Paul parts onto a spare map guitar blank lol
I remember being in a local guitar store in the 80’s and some dude bought one of those.
I still have the full page Gibson advertisement with the America guitar. It will be framed in the near future. God bless America and Gibson guitars!
I made one in High School Wood shop in 1981.
Still haven’t finished it!
Walnut not Mahogany!
They should have used a more comfortable map outline like Greece.
RAAAAD!
wake me up when HI & AK
Dude ! We should start a band.
Ah haha I need a guitar 🎸?
If ya got an extra?
Happy 4th🎉🎉🎉
Need a Canada version, chop chop Gibson!
Fukk yea !
i forget the song, but the band great white had a vidio where the guitar player had one of theese guitars.
Trogly you should find one of those 94 Fender aluminum body Stratocasters with the American flag finish
Trogly, you should have used a shoestring and tied it around the headstock at the nut, like an acoustic guitar. That way you don’t break the tuner. Or you could buy a stool?! 😂
It would be so much more interesting if he started doing acoustic guitars, I like electrics, but honestly, they seem to be all the same . acoustics have unique individual personalities in my humble opinion
Add a strap button to the heel
I’d like one shaped like Texas.
They could try doing one but you would probably choke out like the Cowboys when bending notes 😂
Purdy😜
When start to play, it sound if they play the anthem in sponge bob
Wheres Alaska and Hawaii?
Elyse Steinman of Raging Slab played one on the Don’t Dog Me video. Now I’ll have to go watch the video to see what version she played
I remember her playing one, if you do an image search you can see that she played several different ones. Including a single humbucker, stars & stripes and one that appears to have the old script logo.
@@go4cheeze I did and sent the images to Austin on his IG. I’m glad someone else remembered that band
Butter 🧈 butter 🧈 butter 🧈
Well, ya need practice at the National Anthem Trogly 😉😉 ( mind you, it’s only once a year ) 😉😉
Hi
Fender Spongebob Squarepants Stratocaster
God Bless America!
sounds great!! but.... it would be better guitar if it had a normal body
I believe you misspoke when you said "the hole near California" and meant to say "the hole that is California"..... learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim, learn to swim....
I held my hand over my heart the whole time…
This is just a huge no in so many ways but tis 4th of july so alright
Fender Britney Spears Toxic stratocaster
He’s not going to shut up
Yahoo
Jimi, you are not.
🎶😮…..and the home of the non PAF…..😵🎸😩….oh well!
That guitar loves bar chords, they sound so in tune and ready to rock some arena,80s metal.
ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ 💯👍 🎉🥳🥂🥳
Hmmm
People in Alaska and Hawaii😢
Lol😂
They get pedals…or hang tags. 😂
They should’ve thrown them in as case candy
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar ⭐️⭐️⭐️
What have you got against Martha's vineyard?
The only thing about the map guitar is that you really can’t perform with it
How many videos you gonna make on this guitar?
Zzzz
It's just a boring guitar. I get that it's historical to Gibson, but....blah
This is the only video focusing on this exact guitar
Oi oi
I mean, I get it's historical, but its just a boring guitar IMO. At least some have gloss paint that makes them slightly more interesting
……
2:13 … Gibson Spirit II
First ;) Happy 4Th!
You do know the country's being sliced up like a cake. even as I type this comment
Have a happy Fourth of July. 🎂
Is it just me?...doesn't sound like a V?
Z is for late.
Hiii
@@derpi6250greetings
M is for coksh! Aggag! Coccz!
Unfortunately, this one just seems just like a poorly made guitar. It’s like they gave 75% effort.
you'd love the poster child then! ua-cam.com/video/fYtcFsFQXTw/v-deo.html&pp=ygURdG9yZ2x5IG1hcCBndWl0YXI%3D
You just tie it to the headstock behind the nut...they've done it for decades... I think you need to learn the Anthem with more accuracy... I think you missed a bit just like Christina Aguilera did when she sang it at the Superbowl... It's one song that should be performed with respect, but if you can't do that, don't perform it at all...
This is a fake😂
