Not only are they quite a bit more expensive - especially when you carve the roads regularly, wheels general just need to be big enough to accommodate the brake assembly.
This is true for every Honda ever made. Even if you get a base Civic, you can feel the right foundation to being a driver's car. I've owned a 2004 Honda Accord Type S (modifed to a TypeR-ish performance) for 13 years only because I couldn't find anything better in that class. Being a relatively big sedan, it drove like magic, even compared to newer manual BMWs or other cars "known" to drive good. The new TypeR is way ahead of everything in it's class and even significantly higher classes, and I wouldn't put VW Golf nowhere near that, it was always at the bottom of drivers cars hot hatches. Hot hatch is not about just putting a bigger motor into a chasis, anyone can do that. Putting together a great hot hatch is maybe even more challanging than doing that for a $100k+ sports car.

@@fiachamp how do you compare the fun level between the both? I've always considered hondas to be budget porsches, comparing similar years. Simply because of the focus on ergonomics and experience over purely statistics, they seem similar.
@@trashbandit2449 both extraordinarily fun. the civic type r is so agile yet stable, that you get confident really quickly and can wrangle cars that are significantly more expensive simply because you can drive it hard and it keeps calm. the only thing that isn't great is the turbo 4 engine note. the gt4 is obviously even faster and mid-engine makes it want to turn even more. fantastic engine note, especially with a JCR exhaust. the gt4 challenges you to be a smoother, better driver because of how much the chassis wants to turn. on track, I'd put Type R at 9/10 in fun factor and GT4 at 9.5/10 in fun factor. in terms of overall experience my Type R gets maybe 85% of the way to the GT4 experience, missing an inspiring engine note and GT4 suspension is just better. more compliant yet more body control. thats what double the price gets you. If I could only have one and it had to be my daily driver, it'd be the FK8. Seats more people, more comfortable seats, etc. But since I can have 2, this is my dream garage. Maybe I'll get a GT3 one day and really call it a day.
The first point he makes is basically my biggest issue with it. It's not really a hatch. Yes it has a hatch style boot but the body shape is not that of a hatchback. It's really a small/mid size saloon but with an extended boot lid.
This would be perfect daily and fast car, if not for the markup and availability. √ child seats fit √ road trip and Costco worthy cargo space √ fuel economy of an older economy car, like a regular Civic from a decades ago.
Talking about a hot hatch... A GR Yaris definitely fits the bill! Thirty something thousand pounds wouldn't buy you four doors, a rear wiper, 4 full size seats and a big boot, but forty - fifty thousand pounds will!
In Australia it cost 72600 driveaway. Which is about 37200 pounds. Its so sad to see it 10000 pounds more expensive in the UK compared to Australia. But im glad to be here. Waiting for my delivery.
I think a bigger size stands out differently then the rivals, you literally get more space, comfort and a larger sized car which looks mean & performs mean. Civic stands out and looks great comparatively, I wouldn't want to choose a golf if this beast was next to it..
02 Rear Seats I’m so glad you addressed the “elephant” in the room… With it’s size there’s no excuse for only 4seats considering the price and product marketing as “grown up”.

@@nazarpredatorak as with every other new hot hatch. Furthermore, more has been done than that. The civic as a whole is a much more complete car than the previous gen. I own a FN2 type R and it's the same. 4 seats, 4 seatbelts. No idea why they do it, it's not like that space in the middle of the back seat is used for anything. If it was a 4wd and they needed that space in the floor for the driveshaft I'd understand, but as a traditional fwd, why are they doing it?
Love the new car...design is light years better than the last...wish it was a three door actual hot hatch but I'm getting SAAB vibes from the design...fantastic
One of the big Type R weaknesses is that it sounds like utter crap too. I trust Throttle House saying "sounds the same as an FK8" more than Top Gear saying it sounds "fruity" - Top Gear are great but they do love a lot of hyperbole.
@@ApothecaryTerry having been in a friend's FL5, the engine is basically inaudible from the inside, even while driving aggressively. The +R mode "sound" is okay for a few minutes, but it gets old pretty quick. To compare, for example, you can hear more in a stock Evo X or an MX-5 RF (with the roof and windows up, and no sound tube). Neither car comes with especially fruity exhausts.
@@citrusjuicebox Everything you've said there matches my FK8 experience and what I've heard about the FL5. It's common in newer cars anyway but still disappointing and I feel like this Top Gear FL5 review is a huge load of hyperbole in general to be honest... The only part of it that really bothers me is that standards are inconsistent so it's really hard to find the truth from reviews these days, which is important when hunting for a new car. Reviewers say a 981CS (which I bought over the FK8) needs the sports exhaust, but an FL5 is "fruity"...but the standard 981CS exhaust is loud enough that the stereo is fairly useless cruising on the motorway (tyre noise doesn't help that, to be fair), while on my FK8 test drive I parked it in a car park and revved it but still found it pretty quiet. The FL5 would have to be a good 5x louder to be "fruity" in my book...
Nice car... I like that it's more toned down on the styling side, its just far too expensive for a fwd hot 'hatch' though..... It's also a shame that its slower in a straight line than the old one. Can't see a lot of these being sold.
You're joking right? Every single one is basically sold either as soon as or before it arrives at dealers. That's why dealers can throw a 20-25K markup over MSRP and people are still buying. A lot of the dealers around me in the Northeastern US are basically starting bid wars between the customers. Ppl are willing to fly across the country to pick theirs up, if they could find one.
@@paulhope3401 the car is a legendary hero car. Its, limited production, with each car being numbered (numbered plate on the FK8 was by the shifter, with the new FL5 it's on the passenger side dash). It will have a lower world production volume overall than the previous generation, and it's the first time in a long time that Type-R production was moved back to Japan. It's also likely the last all gas engine Type-R. I'm not even talking about just how good the car is mechanically, or dynamically to drive. There's reasons people are going crazy for them.
I am really hoping this is possible because I've seen quite a lot of honda awd conversions (from their own crv parts bin) that appear to be VERY easy to pull off with some of the new kits coming out these days. If it can be done without cutting the chassis, I might actually do it.
I don’t see how awd would improve anything. All it would do is add weight, understeer, complexity. Only benefit I can think of is traction off the line but who really cares about that.

Honestly, i cant wait to add this next to my g80 m3. Always had a passion for the old type r 's especially now that it is produced in Japan again.

Unbelievable! As good as a GT4 hey? What a review!
People also said similar things about fk8 compared to GT4
ua-cam.com/video/RRuw4GQDEEE/v-deo.html
The first point he makes is basically my biggest issue with it.
It's not really a hatch.
Yes it has a hatch style boot but the body shape is not that of a hatchback.
It's really a small/mid size saloon but with an extended boot lid.
Its more of a sportback than a hatch
Call it what you want, the reality is, for lots of people it’s a really usable and practical space.
American definition of a hatchback.

really happy to see the review in portugal!
They are making too few, so dealers are playing waaay too many games. $90k for a Civic in Canada?! No way.
It looks so good sliding in the rain
Only TopGear could take the car to a track and spend half the video not on it…
"it's an absolute masterpiece" wow
This would be perfect daily and fast car, if not for the markup and availability.
√ child seats fit
√ road trip and Costco worthy cargo space
√ fuel economy of an older economy car, like a regular Civic from a decades ago.
I love that 4cyl turbo engine in my RDX.
I love this car and was third in line to get one at my dealership. Shame I’ll never get one as Honda UK won’t supply enough. Joke!!
I was fourth in line…….dealership got just 1. Just plain sad.
The first hint of Kaizen was when Toyota used quality circles in the 1950s as part of the manufacturing process !! not Honda !!
I love the look of this version, subtle and clean. I wonder if the boot spoiler can be removed and a replaced with a lip for a cleaner look
agree, just wait for aftermarket parts, can't wait to see some cool modifications of this gen
The Acura version doesn't have the spoiler

Switched off at £47k. 5 years of paying over £500 road tax per year on top, for a Honda Civic. I cannot wait for my bus pass.
Great car, great video, great track, great country :)
Talking about a hot hatch... A GR Yaris definitely fits the bill! Thirty something thousand pounds wouldn't buy you four doors, a rear wiper, 4 full size seats and a big boot, but forty - fifty thousand pounds will!
I remember when the civic type R was £16k 😔
Ep3
Waiting for mine! Rrrrr
So the rear cupholders are actually a seat. You need to buy the special Honda accessory made for people who want a wild ride.
In Australia it cost 72600 driveaway. Which is about 37200 pounds. Its so sad to see it 10000 pounds more expensive in the UK compared to Australia. But im glad to be here. Waiting for my delivery.
About the same price here in New Zealand. Quite tempted but I do like cheaper Civic 1.5 turbo sport which looks just as good for about 30K less.
4 between $59,950 and $64,000NZD at the moment here
The size complaint is spot on. The civic was the “compact” king.
I think a bigger size stands out differently then the rivals, you literally get more space, comfort and a larger sized car which looks mean & performs mean. Civic stands out and looks great comparatively, I wouldn't want to choose a golf if this beast was next to it..
Honda makes great manuals. Wicked car that R
Awesome car, thanks for sharing 👍
Ollie is great. Incredibly skilled driver to go with excellent presenting.
It needs a manual handbrake! Its a FWD hot hatch so it needs to have it.

Literally 3cm longer and wider than the last gen 😴

I’m so glad you addressed the “elephant” in the room… With it’s size there’s no excuse for only 4seats considering the price and product marketing as “grown up”.
How can this be a hatch when it’s massive
Its a hatchback. A hot hatchback. Simple

Civics have grown EVERY generation.
My 2011 type R is HUGE compared to the 1976 civic.
Cars get bigger. They always have. And you get the extra space that comes with it. It looks a lot better for it as well.
Easily - it has a hatch
The best type R 🔥🔥
New dream attainable car for me. Yes the price is up, but spec a golf r up with the bits you want and you’re easily over the 50k mark. Plus it’s all about the monthly payments. No doubt it will hold its value well too. It’s unlike any other hot hatch in the class anyway so it can’t really be compared. If I’m getting more size and space for my money I don’t see it as a bad thing at all.
The thing is, compared to previous gen it costs like 15k more for basically some small chasis and engine tuning, and design restyling..
@@nazarpredatorak as with every other new hot hatch. Furthermore, more has been done than that. The civic as a whole is a much more complete car than the previous gen. The interior is a massive step as well. It isn’t crazy when you look at everything else on offer at the moment. It’s just the times we live in. Nobody thought you would ever be able to spend 50k on a golf or 70k on an a3 but here we are 😂 fourth more, the golf and a3 have actually got worse in terms of build quality when compared to their previous generations.
This car looks so good
I want one so bad but the dealer markup on these are crazy. Saw one go for around 65k.
I’m convinced these would still sell at 100k.
80k right now so it’s getting there late 😂😅
I love the new looks
the only problem is that you could get at 718 cayman for the same price
Hot Salon, not a hot hatch, I truly miss small light cars.
Save 11k and buy the old one as it's the same car. Or about 2k more and get a vastly superior Supra.
Crazy pricing!
Exactly! Save your money and just buy an FK8 and some fancy coilovers and a remap and stickier rubber and still be quids in.
@@mugenmark Good shout.
Agree. Barmy pricing.
Yeah, try carrying u friends and family in supra.
The Civic can replace your family car. A Supra cannot.
Failing to mention that it's front wheel drive until almost 7:45 means that top gear is a failure. You can do better for your money. Argue that and you dont understand physics.
Thank you for mentioning how stupid and cheap it is for this car to have center seat mounted cup holders rather than a third rear seat. It’s my biggest complaint about this car. Every other 11th Gen Civic has three seats. Christ, my 2007 Civic Si Coupe has three seats in the back!
My main complain besides the one you cited is the lack of spare tires.
Oh, good lord...it's him...again

@@alsayedfakhri4597 have you been on the honda UK configurator? There's a fair few interior and exterior options available.
I spoke with 3 dealers, the cheapest out the door price I could find was $65,500 out the door. These dealerships are a joke. They need to take a page out of Teslas book and get rid of these shady dealerships. They're completely not needed. Every manufacturer would sell more cars without dealerships
As a father of three, the CTR 4-seater situation is just a no-go for me, at least at this stage in life. Such a bummer!
Well, the GR Corolla says it will sit five. I'm thinking five grocery bags. It's about the size of my '05 WRX hatch.
Keep it up, Ollie!
Shame about the price. I certainly can't afford nearly 50 grand on a car and if I could im not sure I'd be looking at a hot hatch.
That’s the sort of price of most of the best ones now unfortunately.
@Lawrence Garikaiy yeah it's a bit ridiculous when you can spec a 'hot hatch' to 70k plus in some cases.
Buy fk8 instead for 25k . Last proper type r they made

Love the new car...design is light years better than the last...wish it was a three door actual hot hatch but I'm getting SAAB vibes from the design...fantastic
Everyone: no one does a fruity turbo 4
Abarth: am I a joke to you?
@@ApothecaryTerry totally agreed
Nice car... I like that it's more toned down on the styling side, its just far too expensive for a fwd hot 'hatch' though..... It's also a shame that its slower in a straight line than the old one. Can't see a lot of these being sold.
Lol. They will sell.
@@BigBear-- Wow.. I didn't know that. That's surprising for me.
I love the way this car looks. If it was AWD or could be modified to be AWD I would buy one.
