Three Years Playing the Electric Guitar - Month by Month Progress

  • Here is my progress throughout my first three years playing the electric guitar! I started playing guitar in January 2016 as an adult beginner and I've been entirely self-taught through the help of the internet. Since I already have 1 and 2 year progress videos, this one focuses more on year 3. I think the thing I progressed most at this year was starting to figure out how to use the guitar more creatively to express myself :).
I played almost every day when I was able to, usually for an hour or more. However, I have been dealing with an on and off nerve injury in a fretting hand finger, so I was forced to take probably a little over a month off over the course of the year.

This might be your 3 year anniversary video, but for me, that doesn’t matter much.
I have been playing almost 35 years, and watching this video brings back all the joy I had in learning the guitar. You document that joy so well and it is really incredible we live in a time that you can show the world how amazing it is to learn the guitar.
There are times that I become unmotivated or just get used to having the guitar in my life. Watching your videos immediately takes me out of that funk and helps me realize how cool it is that I can play the guitar for a living...
Okay now imma go play a bit a be a kid again... 😁
Just know you are not only inspiring new players of the guitar, but ones that might have lost that joy over the years, and you remind them of the reason they play. 👍

I recently just got an electric since I’ve been getting into rock and metal lately and I feel like I have to start back at square one since I’ve rarely used a pick and know little to nothing about playing metal/rock on guitar. It’s so frustrating since I know guitar but I feel like I don’t. This is actually really motivating so thank you!

I'm in the same boat, don't sweat it! Been playing guitar for about 10 years (with some periods of laziness lol) but the vast majority of my practice was spent doing finger-style picking and acoustic songwriting just because that's what I gravitated towards at the time. Which is a shame for the real nice Fender American Standard Stratocaster I've had for the last 5 years that's not been getting the love it deserves! But now I've come back to electric I've realised the steep learning curve I've got to navigate, not just with my playing but also amp tone (makes a HUGE difference as someone commented above), effectively using my pedal board, etc. But like you say, videos like this are so motivating because it's absolutely possible with a bit of time, patience and discipline!
Best of luck with your playing! I'm sure we'll be shredding before we know it :-D

Cheers folks, I'm definitely going to keep it up! 🤘I practice whenever I'm able and even when I get frustrated I'm still enjoying learning and can see improvement all the time. I'm learning through online courses at the moment but going to be booking some proper lessons as soon as I can.
I love this video though. Above average or below average doesn't matter. Just seeing that change from someone who can barely string single notes together to being able to play full, awesome sounding solos... and how the full-on concentration and frustration turns to pure enjoyment and happiness... it really is inspirational to somebody like me who thought I'd never be able to play anything more difficult than Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. 😁

MrKleenexDude I taught over 100 students most younger. Just being realistic. Wasn’t trying to knock her at all it really comes down to practice time more than years playing. Generally her skill level comes around 1 year if someone has some motivation. Like I said before she is young, she will be fine. Playing matures with age.

I saw your first and second progress videos about two months ago. I had been interested in learning to play electric guitar for a while, but watching those videos made me decide to take the plunge. I'm not very good yet, but watching your progress keeps me inspired and motivated. Keep up the amazing work!!
