    I have found what works really great on these thumbs is allowing it to go half way down and shut the switch off for the hydraulic circuit and use that thumb as a stationary thumb. It works really good like that too!
    Thanks Tim this is a great video. I’ve been looking at them for a while now, I’m going to have to grab one soon!

    First time i see that valve used on a thumb. I would of thought as well set up the kit was it would of had an electric diverter switch.......that way you could mount a button on the end of your joystick and press it to operate the thumb and release to operate the bucket. The valves are about the same price just the electric one obviously would need an aditional $15-20 of electrical.

    Tim until I helped a friend on his race car I found out a few things. When working on anything mechanical it is always from the drivers seat. This way you know when doing something like this it is always from you looking at it from the seat! I hope this helps you with further projects!

    Tim. Don’t feel bad about getting the wrong side of the backhoe. I did the exact same thing when ordering a stabilizer cylinder. I don’t know why Deere does that. Everything I’ve ever operated or worked on left or right was always from the driver’s seat 💺 or pilot’s seat. I think the thumb will work well. It was a bit misleading when you operated it. You allowed everything to go full stroke vs reversing direction as you would when picking up an item. I wish they made one for the 375A backhoe. Great job. The barn is starting to take shape.

    Nice little thumb Tim but i am sorry i dont like how they are using the hydraulics they should just use 2 more hoses on the diverter or better just put a 12v diverter hydraulic valve just like how you did the grapple so you can control the thumb !! have a good week end !! Kioti Curt :-)

    Hey Tim I know you have said that you don't use air tools because of the noise and you want us to be able to hear what you are saying as you work but you know Milwaukee makes some real nice battery powered tools that would make your work much faster and easier without the noise. Just a thought. :)

    Good informative video. Only thing i would add is anytime you unhook hydrolic hoses or add attachments that use hydrolic it only takes a second to check hydrolic oil level. I learned running old equipment with leaks so it got burnt in my head to check the hydrolic oil often but as a rule of thumb at least check when swaping attachments especialy new cylinders were they often need at least a quart to fill them if they are new

  • @eosjoe565
    @eosjoe565 5 років тому +5

    I was wondering about that manual diverter-like valve the whole time you were installing the kit and thinking HUH? I'm very anxious to see it in operation. My initial reaction is that JD went 80% with the kit and then the engineers went to lunch and someone took a shortcut as I would have expected a hydraulic thumb on a backhoe to work just like one does on an Excavator. That is, like a mini grapple that you can open and close independently to grab things regardless of where the bucket is. The way it is it seems like nothing more than a mechanical thumb that has a hydraulic park position. Hopefully you will change my mind when I see you demonstrate it but I'm thinking someone will ultimately need to come out a kit with some additional hoses and another valve near the operator to make this thing truly useful.

      You are the TTWT #1 skeptic, Joe! Channel wouldn't be the same without you! I have the same thoughts about the valve. I have used the thumb for one small project, digging out a 26 yr old 'Red Tip Bush Stump'. I dunno for sure if 'Red Tip' is the right name for the plant, but the leaves turn red in the fall, and they grow crazy fast. Usually planted right by houses.
      Anyway, It worked well for that task. I had to reach up and hit the button a couple of times to enable.disable the thumb during my digging, but overall, I was surprised at how well it worked.
      I still need more practice to give a more thorough review, but I'm trying to keep an open mind!
      I CAN say that I appreciated being able to move the thumb. The mechanical thumbs seem to be 'in the way' to me, especially on such a small hoe.

    • @ngnmech
      @ngnmech 5 років тому

      My thought is when the bucket hits whatever you are going to pickup, the change of pressure will cause the flow to move into the thumb closing it while the bucket stays stationary against the object that you are going to lift.

    When I got my 485 backhoe for my JD I saved money by installing it all myself. I added a thumb to mine and the thumb alone ...for a mechanical thumb....was a tad over $1000. I didn’t even ask how much the hydraulic cylinder was for it..... they are not cheap at all.

    • @eosjoe565
      @eosjoe565 5 років тому

      Wow... if you paid $1000 for a mechanical thumb then this kit is a super bargain as it's only $300 more. You can't even buy a cylinder for that!

    • @Shawn-rq4py
      @Shawn-rq4py 5 років тому

      EOSJOE sure is. I didn’t even ask how much a hydraulic one was because of the sticker shock of the mechanical one.
      In all I paid $10,500 for the backhoe, thumb and hydraulic oil cooler.
      Saved nearly $1000 by doing the install myself.
      Being disabled it took me 2 months to get it done but I saved $$.

The frame, cab, loader, is all so much thicker and solid compared to the Kubota. The cab on the Kubota flexes when you step on the step! It feels cheap. People bend their Kubota loaders too. Let me see here if I understand something since I'm new to all this: On the loader, there's an optional 3rd function valve (I think that's the name). If there was the same option on a backhoe (I assume there isn't) then would the thumb be able to operate independently?
    Also, I thought I saw where there was a factory option for a hydraulic thumb and I believe you mentioned this is a John Deere part so is this the same thumb as one would get if ordering the factory option?

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, this is the same thumb you would get if you ordered new. It is dealer installed.
      You are correct on all your diverter comments

    • @danielsharon524

      @@TractorTimewithTim Thanks Tim! Really appreciate the feedback. Slick the way that they have that valve for the finger set up (I also suspect much of the cost is in that valve) & maybe this isn't necessary since the finger can be disabled (or actually has to be enabled) but it seems there'd be a pretty easy way to use that front diverter valve to control a 3rd function on either the backhoe OR the loader even if it meant reaching around to control the finger or adding a control to the rear. Will have to look at one 🤔 (Cant help it -I'm a hands-on/get dirty mechanical engineer🙂).

    to start with . I used to love your videos . now I think it's all about money you used to be all about the ability of the JD 1025 r . I just purchased one . let's get back to the sub compact . I know this is video is about the 1025 . please stick to the 1025 r .

      @TractorTimewithTim  5 років тому

      Of course, if you trade for a 2038r, you would want 2038r videos.
      We published a poll on this channel asking for opinions on this topic. 95% of respondents said they enjoyed some variety.
      I love the smallest equipment the best. We will continue to provide all of the information and content pertaining to the 1025r that we can.
      Having said that, we get so many questions asking about what size tractor is best for a given user’s needs. We believe we can demonstrate strengths and weaknesses of larger and smaller machines.
      One last question. Did you know about the hydraulic thumb for the Deere compact tractors before this episode? If not, I fail to see how this video could be a disappointment to you. Now, not only do you know that their IS such an attachment available, you also know how it functions.
      As I write more and more, I realize that I am at a total loss to understand your point!
