I always found Severed to be a fantastic ride, not needing a ton of story. When I first heard of it, I hadn't heard of nor played Extraction, so all I got from the story here was a man on a mad rampage to save his wife from monsters and the government. And that was enough for me. I also remember coming across that poor individual who had been cut in half, still slamming his hand on the window, and being grossed out and perplexed at how they were able to survive that long with such a horrifying injury.
@@SSJdavey Great video man, also thanks for making that video on Dead Space mobile and linking the APK below it. You're doing wonders reviving many of my favorite memories from being a teenager. As for the bisected guy, you'd be surprised at how much damage the human body can sustain and keep going before expiring. I know the devs at Visceral would look at images of injuries and bodies from car accidents to help design necromorphs, so maybe they stumbled across some of the videos and things you used to be able to find on sites and forums themed around showing accidents and their aftermaths. I remember seeing a video of a similarly fatally wounded man who had an encounter with a train and was still alive and responsive for a short while afterward, which I believe happened in India, so this guy surviving for that long in Severed is believable.
I'll probably always remember this DLC, because of how simple and short the story was, Gabe Weller was just a man doing his job, then shit hits the fan and his wife gets involved, goes on a Necro killing rampage, the ending was in my opinion beautiful, I might not have got to know Gabe and his wife very much, for some reason I felt like I related to Gabe because that's the length I'd go to save a loved one, also liked how the title foreshadowed the inevitable end.
Honestly, I find this take very interesting. I was someone who consumed as much of the lore as possible when the games where coming out, so I already understood everything that they were talking about and remember feeling like the story was really good. But I totally understand where you're coming from if you didn't have that knowledge coming in.
@@SSJdaveyI've personally never read the comics but the novels are some of the best sci-fi books I've ever read bar none and I'm a huge Warhammer 40k fan.

Severed is a continuation to the one issue I had with DS2, which is that its more of an action horror game. It relies a lot more on set pieces than its predecessor and doesn’t utilize terror as well. Both DS3 and DS2:Severed seem to double down on this, focusing more on set pieces and action filled combat.
I didn't find an issue with the balance of terror/action in DS2 base game, but I agree that ds2 severed swings the pendulum so far into action that it loses a lot of its dread
There's nothing wrong with a balance of action and horror. DS2 tackles a different kind of horror compared to the first game. It's far more relentless and anxiety-ridden
@@SSJdavey Burial at Sea was by far the worst thing to happen to the Bioshock timeline, rewriting everything to make Elizabeth the crux of everything. It shits on the old games stories and themes, and makes no sense. They confirmed that's how it "really happened". So yeah, it's terrible. They could have said it was alternative timeline but they had to make sure it was "your Rapture".
@Tman2bard its been a long time since I played it, I just remember being back in rapture and being super happy with it 😅 One day I'll review the bioshock series and I may end up feeling the same way as you
@@SSJdavey yeah, it was something that when it came out I didn't really think about. When I marathoned the whole series recently, it felt like a sucker punch to the face. Either way, those videos will probably be just as good as these have been.
Back in 2011 when this released, it really wasn't that hard to brush up on any story points that the DLC brought up. You didn't need to play extraction or read salvage to get on board. It was exactly what it needed to be, 2 extra levels to play once you'd finished up with the main story
It isn't hard to find out the details; its just a short google, but it's annoying when it could have been included with no real effort on the devs part. I get what you're saying though, it's there to provide more content for those that want to kill some more necros
Good DLC with tons of nostalgic moments. If you're a psycho like me, you can bring the foam finger with you on this journey. Explore everything within 30 minutes and refund it by the end of the day. (Yes, I'm a dirty achievement hunter, and the 250 gamerscore sitting there as I literally had every other achievement bothered me.) Genuinely nothing essential but if you love Dead Space, you'll love a little more Dead Space.
As alluded to before, I would pretty much need to unearth my Xbox 360 and do some troubleshooting, before I could even think about getting my hands on an old copy of Dead Space 2. However, based on my experience with Dead Space 1 and your reviews/streams of each game, I can see why DS2 is regarded as one of gaming’s nearly perfect horror classics. Your main critique of this DLC reminds me of how I felt about the RE3 Remake having little in the way of puzzles and multi-layered backtracking. Sure, it helps the pacing to be even faster and the narrative to feel even more like Jill’s desperate “last escape” out of Raccoon City, while constantly on the run from a powerful enemy. But it does all of that at a major gameplay cost for me, and I was willing to suspend my disbelief with those puzzle elements being in the original RE3: Nemesis. Granted, the RE3 Remake still has content like the in-game file pickups and some of that “continuity connective tissue” you mentioned with the RE2 Remake. One other example I heard people suggesting is that the wood used by Leon/Claire to board up the windows came from boxes that Carlos smashed open, during his run through the RPD. So those bits were neat.
Mark you really should try and find a copy, I think you'd adore the DS series In terms of RE and RE3 remake in particular, it is a shame that the puzzles from 3 were cut as the original had some of hardest/best ones! Give it 10 years when capcom are out of ideas they'll probably revisit the well and give us another bash at 3, guarantee they do that before they give us outbreak 😭
