    Space Engineers is a voxel-based sandbox game set in space and on planets, developed and published by Czech independent developer Keen Software House. In 2013, the initial developmental release of the game joined the Steam early access program. During the following years of active development, Space Engineers sold over one million units. In total as of 2019 the game has sold over 3.5 million copies In May 2015, for approximately a year and a half, the game's source code was officially available and maintained by KSH to assist the modding community. On December 15, 2016, the game entered Beta and was later officially released on February 28, 2019.
    The game is a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets. Players build space ships, space stations, planetary outposts of various sizes and uses, pilot ships and travel through space to explore planets and gather resources to survive.

    I remember we had a server wipe, and within 10 hours, I had my ship built again. People accused me of cheating.
    It has 30 jump drives, I think 64 batteries, a large reactor, a refinery with all yield, 2 assemblers with all speed, 4 large H2 tanks, something like 8 or 9 small H2 tanks, and more. I welded it by hand in 6 hours, using the build planner. I lucked out finding gold, uranium, and platinum right away spawning in a space pod.
    The server owner had to explain to them that I'm a clean player, and I just know how the game works.
    I suddenly had a lot of people applying to join my faction, because at the end of the first week, I had over 300,000,000 SC, and more resources than I knew what to do with. There were players still stuck on planets looking for cobalt, lol! I ended up launching from orbit GPS guided cargo missiles at people on planets who needed mats. I also did the Learning to Survive tutorial twice. The first time, I was new and trying to learn, and I felt it threw too much information at me with little recourse for failure or mistakes, and it took like 10 hours to beat it. I played around in Survival for a couple hundred hours before I came back to it. The second time, I breezed through it because I had figured it all out on my own.
    My biggest gripe now that I've got over 1,000 hours is that I'm running out of things to do. I've tried almost all the biggest mods, a lot of the smaller ones, and I've even done the grand tour of the planets in an official Keen server. I'd like more mini scenarios or suggestions to pop up in the game.
    Optional objectives or something. Solar flare: thrusters don't work for 15 minutes, you have to travel by rover, or go from Earth to Triton in 30 minutes and receive a ton of resources for free, but wait, it's a trap, now fight Space Pirates to earn those resources plus their ship salvage.
    Without mods like MES, the game feels empty, especially when you've done most of it all.

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Рік тому +3

      I feel like the scenarios are a waste of developer time as so few players play them (look at the steam achievements), I'd prefer the time went to improving the game instead. Unless they were going to do an update to the tutorial, that would be good. Was Goodbot in the game when you did the tutorials as I found that really fills in the blanks that the tutorial doesn't cover.

      I am approaching 4k hours playing SE and I understand that feeling like there is nothing left to do. I started getting that feeling at about 1k hours played too. What has brought me back for several thousand more hours is multiplayer. I have discovered that each server is a unique experience. They all have the same foundation but with wonderful differences because of mod choices and RP on the servers. That first thousand hours I put in were mostly me trying out every cool design idea I could think of in a lonely single player environment. Once I got into the multiplayer side of the game, it felt like I had graduated from space engineer school and finally had a reason to design and build things. The other people in the community are what makes SE great. Other than making new blueprints, I don't like single player anymore. It feels so lonely now.

    • @TheStuff2007
      @TheStuff2007 Рік тому +1

      @@Zer0sLegion Yeah, Goodbot was in the game when I did them, but it was so repetitive that I ignored them when I knew I had done something like 5 times. Press X to use jetpack, Q to roll, etc, like 5 times. I figured that out already!
      The scenarios that exist have a problem of you having clearly defined objectives, but no way to look at them if you're not right there. Like you said in this video, the asteroids in Learning to Survive are WAY too far apart for someone who doesn't know how to play the game. If there was something like the Contracts screen where you could look at completed/incomplete objectives, that would help a lot. The First Jump scenario is the only one that's super linear and really gives you such a small area to work in that you can do everything and not need a list like that.
      The Lost Colony has you trying to figure everything out by GPS markers with no other indication of anything complete/incomplete, and you really can't know if you beat the scenario, but Frostbite improved on that a bit. At least Frostbite gives you a scenario complete screen.

    I actually suck at planning stuff most of the time, and the build planner just kinda slowed me down, however, I admit for bulk crafting, I do use it.
    For me, the feature that really kicked off my playing experience was the custom turret controller, basically it let me have more freedom with weaponry, which did result once in me making a ship that zoomed in reeeaaally close to enemies, open up, then a bunch of arms would come out like some sort of monster and stab the enemy to death, it was absurd, expensive, and dumb, spending 10 minutes repairing after battle or longer, but I had fun. A shame the ship file corrupted before I got the chance to upload it.

    One thing I wish someone had suggested to me before I started building atmospheric fliers is to set up your forward thrusters with an override button on the hotbar. Instead of flying with full throttle all the time and holding W down as you fly halfway around the planet.
    it burns so much less power if you have the override relatively low, but you'll still hit max speed easy enough, practically doubled the potential flight time of my main scouting ship by using the override at it's lowest increase over W-key full throttle.

    (didn't want full video yet but I want my list in here) My gripes with Space Engineers:
    1 Lack of goal / proper progression. Doesn't need a lot of explaining, the current progression is a bit basic, easily cheesed and a speed bump at best.
    2 Once you have cobalt you're set. Iron, nickel and silicon are stone, cobalt is readily available, the rest is not necessary to go to space.
    3 (although this might be changed in the next update) AI is lacking and particularly very rare and docile. You need to get pretty close to one to anger it.
    4 It gets repetitive real quick. Even with mods you can't really change the beginning and game. You can expand it, you can make it harder, but not completely change it.
    5 The tutorial is kinda garbage. It's either into a VERY niche problem, or not nearly deep enough with problems.

    I really (really) hate the terminal UI. There's space to add more inventory filters so weapons and gasses could have their own buttons and allow multi-select so I can look at this ship AND cargo containers. Filters in the control panel so I can see just this grid rather than my base plus the 6 ships I have docked. In the individual block terminal replace all the ON OFF type controls with checkboxes on the same line as the label to reduce scrolling. Reorder controls so things like text colour are at the absolute bottom and frequently used control are towards the top. For example, on the programmable block I want the RUN button higher up, why do I have to scroll to get to the reverse button on motors and hinges?

      @bobc2636 Рік тому +2

      I absolutely agree with you there. The current system is not intuitive at all and the solutions feel more like a work around. The "hide from menu" button kinda helps but the best way to organize your components in the menu is to name each part with the ships name as a prefix (ex. my ship missile turret 2). This will separate all the parts into groups in the menu, but is very inconvenient for large ships with lots of parts. Other than that i have gotten into the habit of either using a prefix like "a" or "1" in the part name to bring it to the top since it is alphabetical, or using groups since they are always on the top of the list (even if it is a single part in the group, it is a way to get it on top of the menu). Hope that helps a little until they revamp the ui.

    See build planner on console is actually really important since there's fewer input options, so it's baked into the block menu. I recently replayed Learning To Survive and spent almost 6 hours on it just goofing around. I think it would help new players a lot if there was a story that went along with it(or just more structured story content generally). Also when you first start Space Engineers there's nothing that tells you: "This is the tutorial! Start here!" So I think a lot of new players don't know they're there.
    Also Splitsie has talked about updating his tutorials which(if he ever gets around to it) would help on the youtube front.

    They have all those scenarios in the custom game section, they should redo a few of them to be more in-depth tutorial scenarios. For instance the earth-like with the base could be about the build planner, building and maintaining ships and bases, then perhaps some practice combat. It could also be on another planetoid, like Mars or Titan instead, to go further into how to survive on limited supplies.
    Discovering the build planner definitely upped my game and probably didn't realize it existed until a couple hundred hours of gameplay in, I can't really compare much else to that. Although I could say my real gripe is being able to create sealed environments, but not being able to take off your suit. I dont really care if we're all clones of the same couple, but it kind of takes away the point of air filled sealed rooms if we dont really need them because we're in a suit 100% of the time. Admittedly a weird thing to want, I'm sure. Probably an extra level of realism that isnt necessarily needed when you'd probably never find yourself wanting to be outside of a suit except for some roleplaying reason lol.
    Also, I feel like we need more games like Pulsar. Team building games like that are fantastic to play, even with pick up groups.

    What feature revolutionized the game when I found out about it? Well hell... I've been playing since the early pre-release... not right from the beginning, mind you. But I was around when so many features were added. I remember when the connector was added. for example, back in 2014. I remember the days when planets didn't exist. I found the game while looking for star wars stuff. I found a video of some guys who had made an X-Wing and a TIE Fighter and were fighting each other. In one video I saw, they started hiding warheads inside their ships so it was possible to hit a critical location and destroy the ship. In short, I was there pretty much every time something revolutionized the game.
    Something you probably didn't know... way back, inertial dampers allowed your thrusters to operate at greater than 100%. This was changed sometime after planets were added. I remember the day it was added. I had my ship, the Scarab, just getting ready to land on the Earth-like planet, and had saved my game. Came back in after the update, and found that the Scarab no longer had enough thrust to survive landing on the Earth-like planet. Got out of the ship just before it smashed into the ground. And then the game auto-saved. (this is when I started keeping auto save disabled) I had to jet pack back to space and use my Hyperspace Frame to get back to my asteroid base.

    I played the game for quite a while now and have a corresponding amount of playtime for it. The point is that I always sort and name every single block on my grids (yes even the larger ones). I found out (much too late in my opinion) that u can press "shift" and "ctrl" to help u with making a group. Yes, it is not a big change, but it does save quite sometime. Especially when paired with "ctrl+c",... and such things in the naming of blocks and such.
    The next feature that changed the way I play Space Engineers was the economy system, since I often lack inspiration for my creations. I was also able to take the economy ships apart for analysis (which made me learn quite a few things).

They have been and still are busy building and improving the game but it seems no one wants to do the documentation and explanation part (I guess that's not the fun part of video game production). The tutorials for build planner don't even cover 1/10th the hotkeys. For example there's atleast three ways to queue blocks for the assembler using it (probably more that i don't know about) including holding the block in your hand and hitting shift-middle mouse on a access point to queue up all the mats into the assembler automatically.
    It's like the devs spend hundreds of collective hours adding so much useful function to the build planner and completely forgot to take notes so now even they don't have a clue as to how many hotkeys the system now has.

    Lego isn't a game, lego is a toy. Lego is a fantastic toy. Lego is a "blocks sandbox".
    Space engineers is also perfectly good *toy*. Like lego, it's a "blocks sandbox", but virtual.
    The biggest problem with space engineers - as a game - is that it's only barely a game. It can't really be called a survival game, because you can launch in survival mode with an earthlike start, do nothing, and survive. That *doesn't* mean we need hunger and thirst meters, that's not a good solution here. Space engineers will never be Green Hell.
    A better solution is to treat it like minecraft - or better yet, Terraria. In Terraria there are things in the world actively trying to kill you. If you do nothing you will lose the game. You can fight those things. You can also explore. As you explore you find resources or rewards, and you also find more difficult challenges. As you build with your resources you progress the state of the world, steadily improving your own capabilities, and causing things trying to kill you become tougher and more aggressive. In space engineers...
    - There's mostly nothing trying to kill you. You have to go out of your way to find space pirates.
    -You are not required to do anything to survive. You can launch an earthlike survival start, do literally nothing, and live forever.
    - Does not have any real "exploration curve". There are really only two stages to exploration (not space, and space), differentiated by which of the small number of ores are available in that stage. Once you can go to space, you have reached the stage where everything is available.
    - Does not really have a "reward curve". There is only one game mechanic involved - mining - and exploring for ores is not very interesting or challenging. The number of ores is limited, and in order to progress from "non space" to "space" everything up to and including cobalt is required, and must therefore be available. There's no room for reward progression based on the vanilla ores.
    - Does not have any adversarial progression. You can encounter nothing indefinitely if you so choose. You can encounter "space pirates" which have no connection to each other. The difficulty of the adversary you face in any given engagement has no relationship to the previous engagement, or the one before that, or the one before that, or your exploration stage. Every engagement is independent and random.
    - Does not give you any reason to engage in combat (tying the previous two points together). There's nothing you will get from combat that you cannot get more easily and and in greater abundance through mining.
    There are mods that try to address some of these points, with varying degrees of success. But there's nothing in the vanilla game, and even the mods that do exist don't really tie a full set of game mechanics together in a coherent, holistic way.

    I started playing with somebody new after a few years of not playing. Came back to noticing the "build planner" thing. What's this atrocity of a build planner? Who needs such a thing? How hard is it to plan your builds anyways? Pick your components and weld it? I don't have the time to figure out this "Build Planner"
    Boy, that was a mistake. I have to say, that Build Planner is just the icing on the cake. Once you retrain your brain to use the planner instead of the old way, you really improve your efficiency. Then learning how to implement the build planner with welding ships is even better.
    So the answer is....build planner. Take the time to get used to it.

    Its alot like Ark in alot of ways. Very well built, cool mechanics, all propped up by a kinda clunky game with little in game instruction. Also, they use too much MMB for my broken mouse

    So, if it hasn't been mentioned in comments I'd be very surprised\concerned, but the build planner is relatively new to SE, it was originally a script\mod thats been around since early days, and is literally the reason i started playing again.

    Maybe it's just me being jaded spending too much time playing survival simulators, but my biggest gripe with the game is... what's the point? what's the point of it all? landing on a planet to build a space ship to go to a different planet or starting in space. it makes no difference. No story, no end goals. you just... DO things. It's fun, but it can be better.

    The reason the wiki's are out of date is because people who have the updated information aren't updating the wiki. Wiki's are only as good as the updates the communities make to them. It comes down to if the ones in the know want to take the time to update the wiki for the good of the community, or keep it in their videos for view count? Just being honest with that statement and not making any accusations.
    Updating a wiki is a thankless job that is time spent with only the satisfaction of helping others being the only reward for it. It can be pretty discouraging to be sure.

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Рік тому

      Yeah, I kinda said that in the video but as I also said, other games with smaller communities have much better wikis. This game has two and both are bad. If I had the time, I would definitely update them to be correct but like you said, there's not incentive for me to do it other than satisfaction.

    • @ZarHakkar
      @ZarHakkar Рік тому

      I think part of the issue is that there are two wikis. Which one do you update? If you do both it's twice the effort, and that discourages potential editors.

    You better get into this game with outside experience of some kind. It's impossible to play it by being a vanilla cod or basically not survival / sandbox player.
    Not to mention scripting in the CodeBlock and Mod support and resources.
    At that point you could join the dev team because you probably understand enough of scripting to add features and manage a server.
