I would NEVER have gotten that damn top spring to go in had it not been for this video and your technique! Thank you, sir! You are a gentleman and a scholar!
The way this guy explains the process is a whole world different of the video I just watched before this. The last video was painful to watch bit this guy clearly knows his stuff. Right to it and logical too. Perfect video thanks for the upload!

Excellent video as always. Great deal of details you covered. I shot a video a few months ago on real brake hydraulic cylinder replacement on a Nissan Sentra for a friend. I was thinking to upload that video to my channel and soon will upload it. While I was watching your video, I remembered to do that. Thanks.
Hi Jahan and glad you dropped in. I've missed you uploading new videos and glad to hear that you'll upload it. And thank you for your comment as it's always appreciated. have a very good weekend!
beautiful video mister Pike! you got it on a lot easier than i did. Took me a quite a while and lots of aggravation especially the adjuster... Thanks for making the video I've certainly benefitted and I know plenty more people will. Give the lady Director our best! Cheers
When I was a kid my Dad and I did automotive work for neighbors. I can't tell you how many times we blew brake dust all over us. If we only knew right? You do nice work, very complete commentary too.
I hear you Wyatt and we're all guilty of it at one time or another. My dad was an automotive mechanic for 45 years and unfortunately, I didn't learn a lot from him when I was a kid as we just didn't see eye to eye. But as the years rolled on, we both mellowed out and got along very well. I would go over and pick him up at the dealership where he worked and would cook him lunches and hang out together. Even today, I think about a lot of wasted years, but I'm fortunate enough that we did made a connection and resolved our differences. I'm glad that I had his mechanical aptitude where I can do this type of work and thank you that you liked the video. Don't work too hard Wyatt and have a great weekend!
I'm glad to hear that. My Dad is still alive and at 88, he's doing pretty good. Although His wife was killed in Sept so he's having to adjust to that loss. He lives in Oregon so I can't see him as often as I would like, but he's coming here in March so that will be good.
So glad Wyatt to hear that your father is still alive and you can still share some time with him. So sorry to hear about his wife and I know it's got to be tough on him. It's so great that he's coming to visit you in a couple of months and will the visit will give both of you time to reflect and share some really great conversations. My father passed away in '85 and mom in '04. Even today, I still miss them to reflect the times we shared in the past. Take care Wyatt..
Thank you very much for sharing your video with us. I have an 05 Escape and need to do the rear brakes on it and your instruction will make it much easier for me. Thanks again.
And please have a work shop manual near by, just in case the last guy that did that job put the parts back in correctly. ask how I learned that one. : ) No harm in checking the book as well. Thank you for posting this. Great camera work too.
Terry i just hate drum brakes they fight me right to the end. That top spring just tests my patience LOL I see they have lots of jigs for installing springs and i chucked the crap out a long time ago and do it like you. Nice one buddy....
HaHa! I have done some in the past that were a royal PIA in getting that larger spring off and on. This one wasn't that bad fortunately. And yes, I've bought those spring removal/installer tools in the past, but it only seems to work with certain spring :) Now, I just use common tools. Thanks Steve for dropping in and sharing your thoughts.
Thank you Thomas and as you know this is a baby job for you! As mentioned, I wasn't going to film it, but it may help the beginners out there. Take care and have a great weekend!
Great step by step video. Stop on a dime and give you back 9 cents change. With the new brakes and new E brake cable you can go out and do some drifting now Terry!! haha
Thanks Glen and she stops pretty good now after I changed the rotors and pads on the front. Of course, that includes flushing the old fluid out and bleeding the system. And yeah, here comes some drifting now :)
How did your brake cable slide into the paw so easily. Mine is under insane tension and I can’t get it in the groove and pull it back at the same time. Any ideas?
When I did this break job, I was replacing the emergency brake cable also. This e-brake cable was shown in another video. I had the e-brake cable disconnected at the junction underneath the car where the two cables come together. That's why it was easy for me to install the e-brake cable into the brake shoe.
Near perfect video thank you. Respectfully, I do wonder why you don't replace/rebuild the wheel cylinders. In the old days (I was a 60's mechanic), the cylinder would almost always leak afterwards. If they did not leak immediately, then eventually.
Thank you for the comment Kari! You're right that wheel cylinders did a lot of leaking in the old days. In this case, I didn't see any signs of leakage, so to save some money I passed on it. Of course, if this was a customer's vehicle, I would have replaced it all.
Cool video thanks for sharing. I have a question! How can I program a new keyless remote for my 2002 Buick LeSabre Custom? I would like to see you do more videos on your Buick LeSabre. Thanks for sharing. btw, You were one hundred percent right about the air sensor on my Buick. You are a great mechanic. I wish I lived near you, lol. Thanks for everything. I hope you are having a blessed new year so far.
I know you can program the FOB with a scan tool such as the Tech2. I'm not sure if you can do it without one. Do a Google search and see if anything turns up.Thanks Thomas and if the LeSabre I'll do a video on it :)
stuzman I have goggled it. I keep coming up with everything but a car just like mine. I ordered a new recently. A guy at the GM dealer got in the car. He put the factory key in and turn it on and off. He took the key out. And repeated that process with the new key. It works OK. But the car seem to run a little rough for a little bit. Then everything is was OK. I stopped using the new key. I just keep it with me in case I loose the factory key or something. I've never had a car this new before. So I'm kinda lost. btw, What kind of oil do you recommend for this car? And how many quarts do you add when changing the oil? Thank you for everything. I appreciate it.
HaHa! The wife did film it and it wasn't that hard to come off. Just trying to keep the video short as possible. But even doing that still doesn't make any difference with views :)
Would These Steps Be The Same For A 2004 Ford Escape? And What Size Tool Would I Need To Get The Center Nut Off? A Couple Of Shops Are Trying To Charge Me $350 And Up Just For Labor Because I Have My Own Parts...
If you have brake drums on the rear then most likely it should be the same. Not sure of what you are talking about as far as removing the center nut. Just remove one of the rear wheels and take a look. You should know right away if it's going to be the same. Good luck on your repair!

That's exactly how to do a step by step video.
meilangelee vazquez Thank you very much as I appreciate the comment.
Good job Terry.. no electrics on that parking brake LOL
Thanks Rob and maybe the job would have been easier if it had them :)
What's fords year range for this process?
Hi Joshua! The 2001 Escape shown in the video is the from the first generation and covers the years from 2001-2004.
I just did mine but the drum would not go on. The pads diameter is bigger.
More than likely you'll need to adjust the star wheel to decrease the diameter of the brake shoes so that it will fit inside the drum. I show this adjustment in the video. Turn the star wheel in one direction and the shoes will decrease in diameter and when you turn the star wheel in the opposite direction the shoes will increase in diameter.

When you say cap, I assume that you're talking about the drum. Give the drum a few good whacks with a large hammer and that should break it a loose :)

Was pretty good up until the e brake cable. I cannot for the life of me put in my e brake cable. Having some serious issues there
It's a pain in the ass Justin for sure. What I did was to connect both cables to each brake drum and pull the cable for the left wheel as far as possible and then used some vise grips to hold it in place. Be sure to put a small piece of rubber or something on the jaws to not damage the cable. Then I was able to connect the cables together under the middle of the car. Also which should be obvious, be sure to run the nut on the e-brake handle all the way up. You're going to need all the slack in those cables to get them together. Good luck!
@@stuzman52 Do you think it is necessary to replace the e brake cable? I was trying to do the assembly replacement without doing that
Justin Weaver You’ll have to answer that. If it worked before then you should be able to reuse your cables.
Thanks a bunch for replying. A couple more questions if youll entertain me. My brakes are still feeling soft and spongy, I did bleed the brake off but do I need to go around and bleed the rest or maybe draw a vacuum on them somehow? The other, is it absolutely necessary to put that e brake cable in the brass widget? I couldnt get it back in and just went ahead and sealed everything up. I do not live in a hilly area and never use the e brake. Thanks again!
Justin, if you didn't open the brake lines on either the front or back, you shouldn't have to bleed them. Since you've got a soft and spongy brake pedal, you probably have air in the lines. If that's the case, you may have a leak somewhere. Be sure to check your fluid level and look at all the wheel cylinders on the back and the calipers on the front along with the brake lines for any signs of leakage. If you don't see anything there, you could have a bad master cylinder. If you don't see any leaks, go ahead and bleed all the wheels and you may want to use a helper as it's faster unless you have a pressure and vacuum bleeder. I like the pressure bleeder myself. I'm not sure what you mean by the brass widget, but if the cable came out of there, I would myself get it back in there as the e-brake is for safety. Since you feel like you won't need the e-brake, I'll let you make the call on that. Good luck!
Near perfect video thank you. Respectfully, I do
