- In this video I bring you along as Jay and I swap out the rear brakes on a 2018 Ford Escape with electric rear parking brakes. It's an easy job to do so let's have some fun and get this thing out the door. -Enjoy!

"You are free to pay me any amount over my billed rate that you deem correct." is what I used to say. I was in IT/hardware and LOVED those people. They were the ones who made cookies, bought lunch, and were customers for life if you treated them well.
Everyone tells me I should charge more, but I usually work for practically free aside from parts, so it’s understandable
Another YTer proudly announce he charges book time in labour, even if it only takes him half the time...plus he charges a higher than average rate to begin with...
Seems to think this is OK. Wonder if he still charged book time when ot takes him twice as long?
SMA brake job videos are like a comfy warm blanket ❤️
I dont know about a blanket but it sure is good to watch eric
Or some fuzzy mittens while sitting in a folding chair 😂
That was savage!
Especially when the mechanic sounds so soothing and looks so good. His wife is lucky.
So guess I should say watch him work
Ford Engineer #1: "You know those electronic blend door actuators that go bad all the time? Let's put them on the rear brakes too!"
Ford Engineer #2: "Haha! Awesome idea!" - High-Five's each other.
Hahahahaaa!! Ford Engineer #3: Hey, guys! I just invented a new kind of part nobody can make, made of a material that doesn't exist, and we're gonna use it in all our vehicles!"
Sadistic Bastards
It's a Classic Friday morning with Eric O.! "" Brake for Breakfast club "".Cool stuff
I always laugh my ass off whenever Eric does a Scotty impression
Reading the South Main Auto comments is almost as good as watching the vids. SMA has the best viewers!!!
I agree. I don't think we're so tough.
I used to work at a shop where we used plastic seat covers on the customers cars. Half the time we used them to protect the car from us, and he other half to protect us from the car. I chuckled when you talked about the cigarette smell, and the tell tale blue haze they leave behind.
I used to watch a guy do brake jobs, now I watch a guy watch another guy do brake jobs. That's progress!
That funny I was thing same thing I love lol ,
Well I’ll be dipped.
@@thewanderingsole5774 It just makes a guy feel all warm and fuzzy. No. That's not right. I don't know.
That sounds like reverse progress to me
The American way, haven't you seen road work where 5 guys are watching one guy shovel😁
That customer gave you a HUGE compliment. "You should raise your prices" Is another way of them saying " I love your honesty and great work Eric".
I never tell people to raise their prices, no matter how nice they are!
(fluid film appears)
Me: YOU FORGOT THE ...
Eric: Baaaaaa!
Me: There it is. 😁
For the skill set you possess, your customer is correct. You do under charge. You charge the rates they charge here in the Philippines. No wonder Mrs. O got that nice buck. She didn't want the kids starving.
I almost made the Trek with the daughters Durango to get the AC Diagnosed. Then she sold it!
@@thewayidoit8895 It was probably the TIPM. Or, a bad ground.
@@jimbeckettplay right. I read about those being bad. I wasn't 8n a position to grab one from a yard and wasn't buying a new one. Haha. I have a 2015 Ram 3500 and seeing electrical gremlins after a year of ownership.
“Took a lot of years to get it like that sweetie” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 my mom is a smoker and that joke killed me
I got to tell you I think you're going to be the next Scotty you already have a trademark remember be yours if I can do it you can do it thanks for watching 👍
Electronic parking brakes, the solution to a problem that never existed..........
It's just there to have another warning light or error code list.
Can't wait to see 1 of those fail. Looks like water can easily intrude in the motor...
They are even using electric parking brakes on some Z-turn mowers. Royal pain when the battery is dead and you have to try to load it on a trailer to take to the repair shop.
@@ngnmech My 2014 Toro has an electric parking brake. If the battery is dead (or in my case, water somehow got into the connector and bridged two pins - a known issue on the model) you can manually actuate it.
American engineers....complicating simple things once again.
If someone actually was legitimately concerned about doing only one wheel, then I really am giving up all hope on people.
“Just open this package of both sides of brakes” “then install the side that seems worse” “then throw out the other set” like what? Could you imagine someone thinking that?
My brother 40 years ago. One side rear brake job. My dad was pissed at him!!!
@@DavidM-yv9js was it his own vehicle?
@@aterack833 Yes it was him car. 1970 Buick Riviera. Drum brakes on four wheels. My brother changed just one rear drum brake because pad was worn out and making noise. My dad was pissed at him and told him why both rear brakes needed to be changed together. Laziness.
@@DavidM-yv9js I hate drum brakes so much there’s a 25% chance i would have done that too considering I’m on sand and jacking a car up is a royal, there’s also a 25% chance I would sell or scrap the thing if cars we’re selling as cheap as they are now
"We're bottomed out.
Said that a time or two."
Stuff like this is why I love this channel 😂😂😂😂😂
That Scotty impression was hilarious! Coupled with Scotty yelling at me in an advert for an OBD scanner, that pretty did me! 😂
6:15 - "We're bottomed out...... I've said that a time or two." Hahhhahaha
Such a classic Eric!
You’re kidding!!! I’ve been doing one wheel break jobs just like you ever since I started watching you. It seems to work for me.
Hahahahaha one of the ads I saw on this video was Scotty Kilmer yelling about some OBD dongle
This is the first time I've felt short changed about not seeing any adds when I watch youtube. :)
I saw Fabreze car air freshener. The google knows they talked air fresheners.
Same
Me too.
same here.. lol.. wth... UA-cam too funny
A huge "THANK YOU" for doing this video. I was getting ready to go on a trip and needed to change the back pads on my 2018 Escape. I've done many brake jobs but never one like this. Your video is extremely informative down to the sizes of wrenches, etc. Have a good one.
How many SMA brake job videos have I watched now? All of them! Why do I keep watching? Eric O of course! You never know what he is going to say next. And occasionally I learn something new, like how to set the electronic E brake to maintenance mode.
Brakes done right! Thanks for sharing Eric!
Finally someone that knows the value of a great mechanic. God bless you and you family. Really enjoy your videos. Even a lowly brake job.
Thank you! Had to do the rears on my '19 escape and this made it so much easier. Took a minute to get it out of service mode but I couldn't have done it without this video! 👍
Best way to start your day is a little SMA !!!
Honestly I can always go for a good brake job video. What I mean by good, is ANY SMA brake job video.
This is by far the best video on how to change rear brakes. Thank You for walking me through it all. I didn't know about disengaging the electronic e brake. So glad I watched this video fist. You ROCK
Another fine brake job done by the employees of SMA and a bonus of a cruise around the town of Avoca! The commentary was provided by Eric O which always adds to the videos. Thank you Eric O!
Somebody probably already posted this, but just a tip. The pistons will push in with maintenance mode on. They can be turned 1 direction a little to accommodate for after market pads that may have the peg on the back of the inside pads. With factory pads, you do not need to grease the calipers as the pads have that sticky silencer material on them.
So while the vehicle is in Brake maintenance mode, your saying the pistons can be pushed in and don't need to be turned?
For electric park brake on the 2017+ you can just use a C clamp to push in the piston. You don’t need a special tool that’s required on the 2016 and earlier models.
Thanks for all the awesome brake job videos. I’ve learned so much. For example, my brother came to me to diagnosis a rear end issue with his Ford Expedition. Rear wheels wouldn’t move without a bunch of grinding and noise. He had a recent brake job at a shop. Checked it out and discovered frozen and completely dry caliper slide pins full of corrosion. Wire wheeled those bad boys up and regreased them with hi temp Permatex caliber grease and problem solved. Thanks for the knowledge that helped me tackle this job. My brother was ready to junk his Expedition thinking the rear end was toast.
Great mechanical skills and on a budget. What a classy operation. Leaves the customer wanting to give more.
SMA and coffee, great start to a Friday
In my case, SMA and a couple beers (in my shop less than 50 yards from the house), great end to a Friday!
"The UA-cam people are savage, savage." Followed by a Scotty impression and fluid film. LOL
My first time watching one of your videos, and I have to say one of the better if not best auto repair videos out there! Great camera, work, great explanation of the important details! Nice job! I am definitely a fan, and will watch more!
Oh don't worry about the video mister o. It was informative, funny, and a little different. All qualities we sma die hard fan have come to enjoy.
It was fun doing the ride along with you and Jay.
If I knew a mechanic around me that was a good as Eric and charged his prices I would not do any work on my cars. Finding a local mechanic that you trust to do the job right and not perform unneeded work is difficult.
16:19 I bet that driver gets free parking at the airport with a wing like that!
This is a very good video. Explains what he is doing and why. And even shows that the documentation services can make mistakes. I don't trust many shops given the poor level of training (including dealerships) of the techs. I trust this guy.
Always great to see another SMA video, keep them coming!!
I love your segues. Always catch me off-guard. Question for you: does anyone in your town watch your videos like, "Hey, that's my house you just passed by?"
"Only $1,000?"
"Well, you had to deal with Jay doing some of the work and his short test drive so you got the special discount"
I don't comment much, if at all.
I appreciate your videos mostly because you describe your process as you chase down the problems, or when you're doing routine maintenance. Helps me when I'm bending a wrench to think about all the wrenches I've known, you included, as we're fixing what's broke.
Glad Jay did the driving. You, Mr. O., are entirely too predictable when you do a test drive. A breath of fresh air is most welcome.
I’m glad I found this, I was about to buy an expensive scanner to do brake maintenance mode to do my sisters rear brakes and you saved me a lot of money. You da man!!!
If the last guy turned it clockwise, it must be your turn to turn it counterclockwise.
"it's bottomed out, I've said that a time or two" hahahaha
LMAO!!! Mines usually..."it's in as far as it can go"... sorry miss!
Mine usually- "Am I hurting you?" From my weight. Pretty heavy guy.
3yrs after you made this... I absolutely am grateful and wiser! 😂 Thank you, can't wait to see what other videos you have!
Another brake job video my day is complete!! Keep them coming!!
Napa doesn't sponsor you, you sponsor Napa.
Yes, I am starting to think Eric has partial interest in his local Napa!
He has mentioned that the local Napa franchisee is a friend.
Your customer came prepared to see a bill much bigger, "unexpected charges", she had her "GRUMP" game all worked up. You surprised her with a smaller bill. A left handed compliment was all she could muster up. I get them all the time.
I am glad the customer opted to buy a 2 wheeled brake job. I can watch these all day! As much as I knock Ford, nice they have a service mode that does not require a higher end diagnostic tool.
I always enjoy a video from you it helps me a lot working on my on vehicle. I work on small engines which I went to school for and I build Mack trucks for a living. Keep up the good content and god bless you. your experience is a good learning curve for me. Wish people would understand the stress we mechanics do for a living but it is what it is.
The last video was a Dodge Journey, this one is a Ford Escape. Are you a Steve Perry fan?
Don't Stop Believin'
You're lucky it just needed brakes. The DCT transmission on these are an absolute paper weight!
Patience sir, patience.
@@SouthMainAuto ..the customer should not need to panic, SMA don't charge enough anyways, ...apparently. ;-)
The powershit.
Give it a month or 2 it's still under warranty
Eacapes don't have a DCT.
Great video super easy to follow break job came out sweet. Thanks for all your help.
Love the Josh and Mr.EricO videos SMA only gets Better!
Ahh yes the arm chair mechanics they know everything like always!
@miguel Arellano ya, you rock. Like a pinto!
That's okay, some of these guys are funny.
@@nmatthew7469 have an electrical question. Can you help solve it?
Fyi, Scotty has been "repairing" cars for about 60 years, a LITTLE bit longer than a "young" whipper snapper like ERIC O..
@@nmatthew7469 now you funny too like a P0172
Ah crap and I thought I was the first one here. Evidently there’s some real die hard SMA fans out there.
Thanks guys you saved me some money by this informative clip.
FYI, I did today replace the rear brake pads and got confused regarding to which direction I should turn the caliber piston.
After some times I just tried the regular, forward pad tool, and just pushed the piston in. It worked! 😉
Over all a great experience, many thanks again to you and your team.
Nice when a customer lets you know that they value your good work. Good job Mr. O
0:56 "Bob's your uncle" haha
Yep Classic Upstate line. My boss says it all the time.
It's a comment we use here in Australia, too.
I can see it now. Studly Jay's Auto Repair UA-cam channel
Eric I do appreciate your videos and how entertaining you make them. I’m not a mechanic and I try to as much of my own work as I can so I have nothing to pick on you about lol. Thanks again for edutainment.
YA heard em ladies!!
go get him....
you know he's good
he's been trained in the classic reach around!
LOL I watch on my wife's UA-cam profile.
he thinks I am a hot woman
You won't get any mean comments from me. Much respect.
Your video was extremely thorough and helpful. I appreciated you mentioning the torque specs and the dimple on the piston & pad for the backside.
Thanks guys, very helpful. I'm going to do my daughter's brakes this weekend. You guys even made me laugh out loud!
Well with ppls pockets stimulated now with thos stimulus checks they must be willing to dig deeper lol 😂😂
Who is this gal “Ginger Lee” you keep referring to?
“Nobody does it like Ginger Lee!” 🎶😂
Judging by how quickly your fellow employees stepped in to avoid a disastrous both sides brake job, and possible a fiery but mostly peaceful car crash, just be honest with us Mr. SMA you never do both sides!
Thank you for another informative, appreciated and entertaining look into your shop!! Best of wishes from Uppsala, Sweden!
you are an honest mechanic that's why you are amazing
Did the customer give Jay one of those sexy winks and say "How YOU doin?"?
Piston movin' tool brought to you by Mac tools, rust cleaning brush brought to you by Weber grills. (not a sponsor)
I often wonder what people find wrong with these videos, its easy watching and informative. Hi from Scotland.
The full Avoca celebrity tour, forget the Hollywood tour.
Great work both, thanks for sharing.
torque wrench on a brake video? first time ever other than an axle nut
Hi Eric, Do you ever just start talking to yourself in the shop and then suddenly have to run for your camera when somebody else notices?
I think they all know he does these videos...maybe if customers come some of them would think its a bit funky lol
The best advice you could ever get from a mechanic, "remove the rotor from the plastic bag". Priceless !!
"Ensure brake pads are removed from packaging before installing."
@@markh.6687 I guess we should as well.
One of your best brake job videos.
Trashed brakes at 33k miles on a 2018...guess I'm doing pretty well with my 17 Escape at 55k then.
Getting a little crusty though. Stupid road salt.
I have no experience with USA driving conditions. Is that too low milage for it to be replaced already ? Mines is about 70,000 km average for front wheel bearings and 50,000 km average per brake pads change. Granted 70,000 km is 4 years and 50,000 km is roughly 3 years.
@@wonniewarrior I’m around 60,000m (100,000km) on my 3.5 year old truck. My brakes aren’t anywhere close to needing replacement, but I’m on the southern end of the salt belt. I also don’t do much driving in heavy traffic. Manual transmission probably helps some, too.
@@jeffs2809 I am so surprised your USA cars are allowed to have so much rust in them in critical places. In Australia they would have been condemned. I had a holden commodore with rust in the silt rail, Vicroads (state road authority) saw it and wrote it off. I also had a Ford Falcon with rust around the windscreen. When the windscreen got replaced, I had to sign a waiver that I was responsible for any injuries if the windscreen popped out due to less adhesion to rust area. He made a valiant effort to treat the rust on the spot and cover it with rubber cement. It is mandatory to have snow chains on cars if in snowy areas as we dont allow salting on Australian roads.
@@wonniewarrior yeah, most states in USA have no routine safety inspection. The ones I’ve had experience with, didn’t seem to care much about body rust. I’m not even sure they’d care much about frame rot. I lived in Germany for a couple years & they were a lot more strict than anything I’ve seen in the USA.
@@jeffs2809 In my state of Victoria, your car only needs a roadworthy when ever it changes hands (transfer), or ordered by Vicroads or police. In NSW, it a basic roadworthy test every year. Each state has their own rules. What legal in 1 state may be illegal in another state such as towball weight rating, trailer length, what type of bullbar allowed between each states and if allowed to have a radar detector.
that stabilizer bushing ain't looking so great...Wait--did Eric O forget to use the brake cleaning spray???
Probably the funniest SMA video lately...thanks Eric and Jason for the laughs!
Keep the videos coming BEST ON THE WEB got to love those brake jobs
When I saw "gravy job," I immediately thought it was going to be sarcasm. Nope. Just an easy brake job.
Eric: if someone doesn't complain about your prices at least once a week, your prices are too low!
