My husband’s coworker told him “ I don’t get the National.” My hubby told him “when you become a dad and are middle age, you will.” We’ve had the good fortune to see them live a few times.
Matt always seems to be standing around on stage like he's bored and waiting for the bus. But somehow it works for him. Great set. can't wait for the new album.
Except for when he's yelling, or taking a stroll through the audience. Also the (not-so)odd occasion that he walks too close to the speakers creating feedback and has to crouch or crawl to try and avoid it when passing back again lol
I have been listening to music since the late 50's , and have seen well over 1000 gigs (2000 bands with supports) . The National are one of the greatest bands of any era . But there are many great contemporary artists eg LP, Low , London Grammar, Wolf Alice etc.
Completely agree, their joyous to see live, Matt is captivating. I've seen them in a large outdoor crowd & intimate setting & always been brilliant. Such a great back catalog of music. Thank god I picked up Alligator in the early 2000's by chance ever since they've kept delivering classic after classic 🙌🙌

Played for nearly Two hours and just killer track after killer track. But much more muscular loud and rocky than the last album. Which one detractor has called "too sugary" . But I like sugar personally.!

How can you say that when Matt's voice was gone fron the 1st minute? Jesus Christ, listen to Grace or to The System Only Dreams, for example: he can bearely sing... Sadly, one of the worst of their performances.

For me, the national is the best band ever. all the songs can be enjoyed. His music performances are always amazing. If anyone asks, the fun part is staying silent in life, I won't hesitate to answer watching the National concert, even if it's from UA-cam. maybe I love the National the most in Indonesia. and lastly, the song about today closed this concert well. very calming

The band were fantastic and Matt was on fire. Not a poor track in the whole set. Fabulous. Amazingly they only played one track from the brilliant last album = light years. Sadly no Mina Tindle on stage. But you know as much as I wanted to hear Oblivions etc. It didn't really matter. Pink Rabbits , "the system only" etc etc were just magnificent. ps Support band Dry Cleaning were very good , as were first band Mewn. Although they only played 3 tracks.
@@keithbate9405 we were to the right of stage and about 20 feet back.. beside the large pillars. But we had loads of room too. I seen them in castlefield in 2018 and it was packed.. couldn't get a good area due to the bar and toilets being so far away ha.

If you looked across you must have seen him. he was a giant! Some great clips on YT of the National . But none as good as the gig . Matt was really animated and on fire .

I first saw The National in 2011, and a half dozen times since. Always brilliant and Matt's commitment to dragging the wired Mike through the audience and sucking down bottles of wine is always thrilling.

Wonderful. And the set list has much from "Trouble will find me" which is my favourite, partly for its interesting time signatures -lots of 7/4 and some 9/4, and yet a really powerful and accessible rock album.
How was the show? Last time I saw them in the Twin Cities was at the Excel Energy Center. However, they previously played two nights at First Ave for High Violet and that was 10x better!

The guitar and bass tones at this show are absolutely killer. I was fortunate enough to see them on this tour, it was an incredible show. Like many others, Tropic is my new favourite song, but the live version...the album version is a let down when you compare it to the energy that explodes off the stage when they play it live.
that's the effect of how loud everything comes through the PA. What you're hearing *now* is the soundboard. Matt's an awful singer if people are familiar with great singing and honest with themselves. But he's a great writer fronting a great band and that's enough for me.
Matt's real voice is super low, deep, resonant, so it is mixed especially loud and reverberated on the record to get it to stand out in the mix. In the live mix, however, it is dry (no reverb or delay) and the midrange is boosted, so it can be heard over everything else going on.
that's not an unpopular opinion unless you're in National stan-boy land. Berninger's never been a good singer. Staccato, weak delivery, off, and all around without passion. He just happens to be a great writer and has a killer band.
