My husband’s coworker told him “ I don’t get the National.” My hubby told him “when you become a dad and are middle age, you will.” We’ve had the good fortune to see them live a few times.
I am a 33 year old, married, non-dad. I have loved the nationals melancholy since I was 19. I won't go back. I don't know anything else

Me too! I heard it first live in Manchester and it's been on repeat since. I just want to see what they do with the studio version now.
The lyrics "I would love to have nothing to with you / I would like to move on and be through it" really stood out to me when I saw them in Kansas City.
Same!! I also heard it first live several months ago at Ottawa's Bluesfest. At first it was tough finding the new song on youtube, now its everywhere. I love it!

this was a phenomenal performance. phenomenal. the national will forever be a soundtrack to my life in new york. fucking brilliant.
I saw them last night in Manchester .Been gig going for 50 years and seen well over 1000 gigs (1500 plus bands) . They were on fire and a brilliant near two hour set. Honestly believe even better than this superb performance.
The National are now easily mu current No 1 band , and are in my all time top 10. . Along with the Beatles, Wall of Voodoo, Dead Can Dance, Velvet Underground, Fleetwood Mac, Joy Division, ,Low, REM , Led Zeppelin
How can you say that when Matt's voice was gone fron the 1st minute? Jesus Christ, listen to Grace or to The System Only Dreams, for example: he can bearely sing... Sadly, one of the worst of their performances.
The best band in the world is back and they sound absolutely amazing can’t wait for the new album, amazing show!!!!!
The NTL. is like a fine wine that Matt drinks out of a coffee pot on stage before the encore. Much better with age and gets everyone more into it.
Matt always seems to be standing around on stage like he's bored and waiting for the bus. But somehow it works for him. Great set. can't wait for the new album.
Except for when he's yelling, or taking a stroll through the audience. Also the (not-so)odd occasion that he walks too close to the speakers creating feedback and has to crouch or crawl to try and avoid it when passing back again lol

The fact that they took Rylan out of the setlist still hurts. But they were amazing

they played it in minneapolis tonight with indigo sparke as the second vocalist!! surprisingly different sound to it but still incredible

I have been listening to music since the late 50's , and have seen well over 1000 gigs (2000 bands with supports) .
The National are one of the greatest bands of any era . But there are many great contemporary artists eg LP, Low , London Grammar, Wolf Alice etc.
Completely agree, their joyous to see live, Matt is captivating. I've seen them in a large outdoor crowd & intimate setting & always been brilliant. Such a great back catalog of music. Thank god I picked up Alligator in the early 2000's by chance ever since they've kept delivering classic after classic 🙌🙌

They played one of those tracks at the live gig in Manchester Two weeks ago today.
Absolutely brilliant performance. Played for nearly Two hours and just killer track after killer track.
Matt was absolutely fired up eg see the tracks uploaded onto YT = National Manchester Mayfield, August 27 "the system only dreams in total darkness"
They played two new tracks. Both excellent. But much more muscular loud and rocky than the last album. Which one detractor has called "too sugary" . But I like sugar personally.!

Comunque mi consola ritrovare un'ottima voce di Matt nell'ultimo lavoro dei National, a mio avviso molto bello. Great Matt voice in all The National First two pages of Frankenstein.
@@salinger2000 In the studio version, vocal errors are often corrected, and also, vocal correction techniques are used, such as reverb on the record, anyways, Matt's voice is currently worn out, Matt's get anxious when he's on stage, which makes Matt's singing even worse

Wow, this may be the best version of Terrible Love I've heard.
For me, the national is the best band ever. all the songs can be enjoyed. His music performances are always amazing. If anyone asks, the fun part is staying silent in life, I won't hesitate to answer watching the National concert, even if it's from UA-cam. maybe I love the National the most in Indonesia. and lastly, the song about today closed this concert well. very calming

Saw them last night at the Depot , Manchester . Was just a few feet away from the stage . No moat !
One of the greatest performances I have ever seen in 50 years of gig going. The band were fantastic and Matt was on fire. Not a poor track in the whole set. Fabulous.
Amazingly they only played one track from the brilliant last album = light years. Sadly no Mina Tindle on stage.
But you know as much as I wanted to hear Oblivions etc. It didn't really matter. Pink Rabbits , "the system only" etc etc were just magnificent.
ps Support band Dry Cleaning were very good , as were first band Mewn. Although they only played 3 tracks.

I was near the very front. But we were not crowded in like Sardines like you at the awful O2 Academy. Birmingham
@@keithbate9405 we were to the right of stage and about 20 feet back.. beside the large pillars. But we had loads of room too. I seen them in castlefield in 2018 and it was packed.. couldn't get a good area due to the bar and toilets being so far away ha.
@@symmie666 I was maybe 15/20 feet back with Matt in front of me. There was a really tall American Bloke (6 foot 6 or more) to my right with the State flag of the band (Kansas ?) If you looked across you must have seen him. he was a giant!
Some great clips on YT of the National . But none as good as the gig . Matt was really animated and on fire .
@@keithbate9405 yea I seen him getting into the crowd! Standard isn't it ha! By that time I was fairly oiled up on gin haha! I'm going back over all the LPs again. Would love to see them again.. it'll probably be a while I'm sure
listened to tropic morning news for about 30 times in a row. still could hear it for another 50 times ...... brilliant again for those who get touched by their music ...

What a great set list. The National always delivers 🙏
Wonderful. And the set list has much from "Trouble will find me" which is my favourite, partly for its interesting time signatures -lots of 7/4 and some 9/4, and yet a really powerful and accessible rock album.
Such a masterpiece of setlist! love them!

I first saw The National in 2011, and a half dozen times since. Always brilliant and Matt's commitment to dragging the wired Mike through the audience and sucking down bottles of wine is always thrilling.
Unpopular opinion? Fantastic band, love their records. He just doesn't sing half of this very good. Staccato and off.
that's not an unpopular opinion unless you're in National stan-boy land. Berninger's never been a good singer. Staccato, weak delivery, off, and all around without passion. He just happens to be a great writer and has a killer band.
Its pretty welll known. He is not a great singer. The National is more of an overall vibration

Not a follower of the National. But saw them last week. He uses his voice to create emotion. The entire show was brilliant. There was power in silence. And when he spoke it was magical. He gets it.
Unbelievable intense sound. Wonderful! Would love to see them once again live in Munich or elsewhere...

The greatest concert I have been to since the late 1980's. In my all-time top ten gigs.
I have seen over the last 50 years the following live: Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, U2 , REM (9 times) , The Clash , The Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Joy Divsion etc. etc.
The National were better than any of them !

How was the show? Last time I saw them in the Twin Cities was at the Excel Energy Center. However, they previously played two nights at First Ave for High Violet and that was 10x better!

Matt looks like he’s been wheeled in from some kind of home somewhere. In fairness the mix is way off, but he looks super confused a lot. Like he drunk or took something before coming on stage.

The guitar and bass tones at this show are absolutely killer. I was fortunate enough to see them on this tour, it was an incredible show. Like many others, Tropic is my new favourite song, but the live version...the album version is a let down when you compare it to the energy that explodes off the stage when they play it live.

Never heard of this lot before I fell over their name on Quora, so I came over to give them a go. Can't remember seeing them in the charts or anything - band's great, needs a better lead singer, he's got zero personality and his voice is VERY 'meh'! The rest of the band's great, though.

that's the effect of how loud everything comes through the PA. What you're hearing *now* is the soundboard. Matt's an awful singer if people are familiar with great singing and honest with themselves. But he's a great writer fronting a great band and that's enough for me.

Bad mixing, perhaps
Matt's real voice is super low, deep, resonant, so it is mixed especially loud and reverberated on the record to get it to stand out in the mix. In the live mix, however, it is dry (no reverb or delay) and the midrange is boosted, so it can be heard over everything else going on.
