    The hair on the eye segments is basically required to keep pollen off the eye. They can swipe the hair without having to scape the eye.

    There are a LOT of reviews of this lens but this is the best one because it actually details why this is a better option than the cheaper Sigma.

      I really love my Sigma macro. But that AF on the LUMIX 100mm is just too good :)

    At last a youtube photography influencer without baseball hat, no tatoos on the chest, and piercings in the lips. 😂 Anyhow, this video was huge for a new S9 owner like me. I am about to pick the third lens for my camera next to Sigma 17 mm and 45 mm. I watched your videos, tons of information still entertaining, and the lenses I was considering to be my third "specialty" lense: Sigma 90 mm, Sigma 50 mm F1.4 or 1.2, Panasonic S Pro 50 mm f1.4 monster, or this Panasonic 100mm. I am going to decide in a couple of days. So far, this macro lens seems to be the “winner”. Thank you for your excellent content.

      That macro is really something special, and no bigger than the other S series primes from Lumix. Can recommend :)

    Thanks so much for this video review. What would be your advice on G9 Mk2 with the Olympus 60 or 90mm macro compared with this lens on the S5II.
    I have both camera but looking to add a macro lens.
    Thanks - just found your channel and subscribed! 👍🏻

      Hands down there isn't another Macro in existence that competes with the S-E100mm. We keep getting reminded of this. My wife shoots food and lifestyle and is always stealing the lens from my kit for her work! Within the macro range this is a superb lens, but it's equally amazing outside the macro range. That's where any regular macro falls down. I've been using the 100mm on the S5II and S9 for festivals in Japan, and it's just amazing. Cannot say the same for other macro lenses I've used. Most macros are tuned for a specific task, naturally, but the S-E100 has two different motors, one for each range.

    It is the same size, filter thread size with all of the lumix prime. Smaller than the 90mm sony f2.8. What an achievement!

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  4 місяці тому

      Thankyou Andrew :) Yes I did. I still own the Sigma but have the Lumix 100mm on loan still. We'll have to go buy one for ourselves, both myself and my wife love using it. I'm the road running a workshop right now and she's at home with the Sigma and she was a bit cranky about that!

    New subscriber! I’ve recently gotten into a LUMIX S5mk2 and am interested in a macro lens for film scanning, along with more creative uses. How is this new 100mm macro for field flatness while scanning?

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  2 місяці тому

      Hey Joe. I haven't tested this myself. I've used this lens in so many situations since first posting this video, but have not evaluated to what extent it delivers a flat-field design. Need to get Chris Frost to review the tech performance for us!

    Great video!
    Short question: I'm in the market for a macro lens for jewelry photography for my Panasonic S1. What's your opinion? Should I wait a bit and order the new Lumix S 100mm, or should I go for the Sigma 105mm? I would appreciate your recommendation.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  7 місяців тому

      I think the Sigma is close to half the price and will deliver equally amazing image quality. It's a great lens. The LUMIX version shines for fast focus, which I'm guessing is not so critical for jewelry! Can save a lot of money and buy the Sigma :)

      If money is not an issue and the difference in price is only 21% higher for the Lumix lens, between the two lenses, would you still choose the Sigma or would you opt for the Lumix.@@EwenBell

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  7 місяців тому

      @@testbkk6314if money is no issue or the floor price is the same for both, the LUMIX lens definitely has the advantage. That AF response is just remarkable, and it becomes a much more creative lens compared to any other macro I've used. That matters when chasing butterflies or flowers. It's more compact to pack, plus uses the 67mm thread like all the other S series primes. So it's my favourite.

    Thanks for the review, Ewen. It seems like a real winner of a lens. I would love to know, though, how the bokeh looks when stopped down to the f/4 to 5/5.6 range, where I am actually more likely to use this lens (as a portrait lens for stills or as a video lens for corporate / documentary on my B cam).

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  8 місяців тому +1

      I did test that as well. When you're close to maximum magnification you still get bokeh, but as you step away from the macro perspective into a more normal range then it starts to look like a normal lens too.
      Maybe I need to make a video on why I shoot all my portraits wide open :) Just for reference, here's a link to a photo essay of mine where all the portraits are taken at F1.4 on the Lumix G9...

    Great stuff. Thanks for the brief Lumix 100 vs Sigma 105 comparison. I've been searching for this. I own the Sigma 105 already along with the S5 & S5ii already. Sometimes the focus hunting slow so I engage my focus limiter shortcut button but I guess that's not enough reason for me to swap or add the Lumix 100. Was thrilled to see you using the Sigma 60-600 as well. Reviews of that one with Lumix is hard to locate, especially for sports which is the purpose I'm considering getting it next. You've earned my sub.

      Thanks for stopping by Sean and nice to meet you :) Yeah it's hard to justify upgrading from the Sigma 105mm, it's such a great lens already. Sigma are doing a tonne of great stuff at the moment. I have a review of the 14mm F1.4 coming out in a few days, and next month will have some hands on with the 50mm F1.2 to share as well. That lens is way smaller than I was expecting, so am very excited to try it out.

    Amazing review, and tasty footage ;-) That's the proper way to present a product! Congrat! I would like to ask what's your opinion - as an alternative - about Panasonic 85mm F1.8 and the Panasonic 70-300?

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  8 місяців тому

      Glad you like the footage!
      I used the 85mm for a long term project and it's a great lens for sure. That F1.8 is extra nice when you want to separate subjects further away from you. I can't imagine going back to it now though, not after using the 100mm. That's the keeper for me.
      I haven't used the 70-300mm, so can't comment on that one. I mostly shoot primes. If I can't fit all my gear into a 10L sling then something ends up back on the shelf pretty quickly!

    Sicher kein schlechtes Glas für L-Mount, ich habe kein solches System. Ich besitze ein große Zahl von Macroobjektiven für MfT, KB und GFX, alle kann ich mit Adapter verbinden, nur die L-Mount Allianz will das nicht 😢

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  6 місяців тому

      I can put any of my DSLR lenses onto the L-mount with adaptors. And they work very very well. Have published a few reviews on that at my website. This review is for a very new lens however, one that is vastly superior to any macro I've ever seen.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell  25 днів тому +1

      Magnification is determined by how close you focus. The maximum magnification is simply the closest focus distance.

      I never saw any hint of fringing even under very contrasty conditions. Look at the shots of the backlit chinotto glass for example, all the specular highlights remain very very clean and the image is sharp without colors drifting.

    The lens could be even smaller and lighter without autofocus. I know many people are not used to using manual lenses, which is a shame as modern cameras have a lot of aids in focusing with manual focus lenses.
    Just give us a high quality manual focus macro lens. Don't require these mod cons.
