Why 85mm is NOT my ideal portrait lens
Переглядів 9447 годин тому
When it comes to portrait photography, 85mm is the exception not the rule. It is not my ideal portrait, because it limits my ability to share the story. In this video we are heading to Kathmandu in Nepal and sharing some lovely moments with the local people in Nepal and exploring a little street photography on the Sony ZV-E1. And we’re shooting wide instead of long. 00:00 Intro 01:15 All Day Le...

    • @EwenBell

      That's a very good question. They're a good match for using the same battery and lenses. But very different to drive, so you have to think differently to find buttons. I've often reached for a dial or button on the S9 only to remember that it's not there! Also you can't map your custom settings between the two bodies. They do feel very different to work with.

      It's on my list :) I think they're pushing the downsizing of camera bodies harder than the lenses at the moment. Sigma's Contemporary range are first to mind right now. 35mm F2 and 20mm F2 are just lovely. They have a 45mm F2.8 and 17mm F4 that are even smaller.

  • @waveland
    @waveland 9 годин тому

    Two things knocked the S9 out of contention for me. First, the ports are on the grip side of the camera. Absolutely no one talks about this but having the HDMI out and the USB-C where your hand belongs is very limiting. Secondly, the controls (especially the dial) feel like they came off a toy. It’s a cute camera and it will serve some folks fairly well for occasional use but I’m not convinced it will stand up all that well to regular use.

    I'm looking at a 35 mm prime lens for landscapes and was interesting to see you using a 35mm lens for portraits and street photography. There's a reasonably cheap Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 prime lens. But to get optimal sharpness etc. it needs to be stopped down to f/2.8. What's your opinion on getting a 24-70 mm F/2.8 lens for landscapes and street photography. That's my other option.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell День тому

      I'd be disappointed with any F1.8 lens that needs to be stopped down to get a sharp result. Maybe there's a better option out there for the R mount? I might be the wrong person to ask about a 24-70mm F2.8. I prefer faster lenses so that one is a non-starter for me. But for conventional landscapes there's not much need for a fast lens. I think 24mm is very limiting for certain landscapes though. I give more detail on that in this video... ua-cam.com/video/sBNTmY_VB1k/v-deo.html

    I have the 25-50mm 1.7 and love it. One of my other favorite lenses is the 200mm 2.8. I tend to take the 100-400mm out more but everytime I take the 200mm out, I love it. In fact, I had originally rented the 200mm and couldn't bear sending it back so I purchased it.

    • @EwenBell
      @EwenBell День тому

      Oh yes that 200mm F2.8 is just lovely isn't it. I also tend to take the 100-400mm out more often. Probably because the birds I like are too small and I'm rarely brave enough to leave the longer lens behind :)

    I am part of a camera club, we put our comp schedule out in Dec for the following year. I am amazed at how most members put their images in at the last hour, or ask for extra time. It is extremely frustrating, and often we don’t get many images for our comps.

      @EwenBell 2 дні тому

    I couldn't agree more. I started my career using a 35mm f2, shooting for the local newspaper. It was probably the most useful lens I ever owned. I graduated to a 42 mm f1.7 on the Olympus 35 SP. I loved using that lens, but would often revert back to the 35mm and 5omm lenses on my OM2 or OM4 cameras. All these years later, i still find myself working in that focal range. Much of what you said applies to photography as a hobby also, except the paying the rent part of course. I find that "keeping up" with my photography is so important, no one cares about looking a photo from an event a week ago. I must load, cull, edit and post photos from an event within a Day or few from the event will even look at my posting. Being able to quickly create "highlight or best of" collections for friends birthdays, anniversaries, and yes: funerals really motivated me to keep doing it and to keep up with the flow.

    Outstanding review! Might be a great fit for me..Primarily an M11M shooter but my Q3 is a bit of overkill and while I tried a Leica CL, that didn't work for me..never a fan of Lumix menu's but at least better than Sony! I will only use the S9 for photography, perhaps a 24mm Sigma 24 and 28mm Leica Elmarit or any of my M collection..So much negativity about this camera, but that's nothing new..the peanut gallery is in full effect! thank you for the review, if the S9 works for me, I just won't need my amazing but rarely used Q3..lastly, I've been predicting Leica to come out with CL2 type camera..sort of like..the S9!

    You have some really nice images there. I also did a trip to Japan in Jan. I took my S1r and the Sigma 24-70 and 20F1.4. I used the 20 for interiors and landscapes. For street photography I mostly used the 24-70 but reviewing my final keepers I find that I was mostly shooting in the 28-40 range or all the way out at 70. 35 is kind of the sweet spot for street for sure but having something longer is beneficial occasionally.

    You don't need to break the bank. Get the Oly 45mm f1.8 for example. If you are ok with manual focus, get a TTArtisan lens, there are many at f1.2 and f1.4. Even zoom lenses can give great results. I like my Lumix 35-100 f4-5.6 lens for bokeh. Yeah, it is f5.6 at 100mm, but that's a long focal length, get the positioning right and the bokeh is beautiful.

      I have a detailed blog on my website that explains my star trails technique, and the variation in settings... ewenbell.com/blog/Stars_Over_Uluru If you want the Milky Way you need to keep the shutter speed down to about 10sec, so a very fast wide lens is useful. The 10-25mm F1.7 for example, or Laowa have a great little 7.5mm F2 that I would recommend. MF lens that one too. Faster the lens the less you're pushing ISO. Number one cause of noise is when you underexpose at high ISO. Better to push to higher ISO and clean up nose in Capture One or Lightroom.

    @EwenBell - Thank you for your perspective. I do not make my living from photography, but have always enjoyed it as just a hobby, up until recently when I have just become, “Bored and Burned Out” with it. I am, at present, “Bored and Burned Out” with every aspect of my life, and in the past, photography always given me solace , even through overwhelming burnout with life in general. This is not the case now, as I just cannot even find joy in photography. After listening to this video, you have given me something to think about, something to look forward to, something to bring joy back into my life from something that has always been in my life, and that is photography, both film and digital. I am thinking about simplicity at this point and just having fun in the moment. Maybe just a simple half frame film camera and my Sony RX100 1. Nothing fancy, just small and inconspicuous, just enjoy capturing smiles, displays of affection between couples, nature, trees, birds and the simplicity of humanity. I will be looking forward to seeing more of your perspective on photography from your channel, and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject and helping to save many of us from “Boredom and Burnout”. Awww man, a lot of feels here and thankyou so much for sharing this. Before all the chaos of 2020, I had already reached a stage where I felt like I wanted the world to stop for a few months so I could catch up. Turns out the in the absence of deadlines, I don't get much work done! Sometimes that's also a perfectly fine way to live your life :)

      @@EwenBellYou’re welcome. Your channel can also be philosophical on other “less mentioned” topics as the one you discussed in this video. Photography is in its purest form, “Time Travel”, a portal into humanity’s past, because in essence, all we have is this present moment. Photography is an art form, forever capturing past moments in our lives and humanity in general. Without these captured images, I don’t know where humanity would be right now. I guess what I am trying to say is, “enjoy photography, but don’t worry about technique or what anyone else thinks or says about your photographs, just capture those moments, because, in the blink of an eye, they are forever gone. As I stated earlier, a half frame film camera will give you 72 frames of memories from one roll of film. Capturing these moments on film, is great because you don’t know what you have until you develop this roll of film. I don’t want to worry about technical details or anything else, just want to capture moments and help to re-create the past joys of photography. Michael

    1:20 is so me, after every trip i would take a "second vacation" away from my camera too lol but i digress. this video resonated with me, especially the "boredom is a sign" part. i tried shooting with only my phones for a few years, tried small+medium format film, explored small P&S cameras and large medium format "tanks", tried to learn how to shoot street and abstract, even tried to learn videography and cinematography. maybe i would venture into the profession side of things this year, seeing that i always shoot for myself and not for others.

      Nothing brings focus quite like having a project and a completion date! For what it's worth, I have reviewed a LOT of camera gear for magazines over the past decade and was lucky enough to try out some great medium format gear, and realise that 35mm was much more my happy place. Sometimes we need to try every other option before we can settle on the obvious option :)

    Enjoyed the video, but not sure I identify with it. I love photography, so I am so glad I don't have to do it for a living. That means I don't have time carved out just to do photography as much as I want to (and probably need to) in order to get better at it. So finding time to do it and do it thoughtfully is a much bigger problem than boredom for me. I wish I could do it enough to get bored with it! "Boredom is a sign that you're ready for something new". This could be the motto for a generation. Or it could mean that you have attention deficit disorder. Nothing wrong with trying new things and expanding horizons but I honestly don't think boredom is the best indicator. It could just indicate that you're not willing to put the work in. As far as the social media treadmill, I agree. I think it would be exhausting. I wonder if we just shot for ourselves, if we just shot for fun, if we just shot for growth as an artist if that wouldn't relieve some of that pressure?

    I'm hooked up to your videos Ewen, what a great content! Thank you for sharing your passion with us! Out of curiosity, did you have a go-to lens during your trip? I see the 35mm f1.8? I'm fortunate to own an SL3 as my main camera, but sometimes it's definitely not the right camera to walk around with. I'm contemplating the S5 II or the S9, mostly for stills. I'd be honored if you had any thoughts in this regard? Cheers!

      Thankyou for the kind words Nico :) Yes the 35mm was my favie lens and often I would spend the entire day with just that lens. I also had the 100mm Macro with me most days (just an amazing macro lens) for moments with flowers and bugs. I have a dedicated video on the 35mm in Japan coming up soon! In the meantime, that same lens was the feature on this photo essay: ewenbell.com/editorial/35mm+Nepal I'm glad you brought up the SL3, such a great form factor and beautiful design. And a really great UI as well. I think Leica don't get enough credit for how well this series of cameras "just work". We road tested the SL2-S on a workshop last year and it was just lovely. I think the Lumix S-35 F1.8 is a great pairing for the SL series. I think you'll enjoy the S9 as a smaller pixel alternative to the SL3. The S5II is my camera for getting work done in the studio, but on the road the S9 is my pick. I have another video soon that looks closely at what they removed from the S9 to make it work, and why I don't really care! It's a great little machine. Final piece of advice though: always buy the camera you love. Don't listen to tech specs and pixel peeping. Pick the camera that makes you smile :)
