As the story goes, Allison would frequent Tower Records looking for new compilation albums to jam and warm up to in the car and etc. She found this track on one, and would sing along and lip-sync as a warm up in her car. On Friday nights, as shooting went super-late, she would turn her trailer into an impromto club cast and crew would stop by at, and for fun, she'd often perform it there. Aaron Sorkin stopped by one night, and said to himself "hell, this is more compelling than whatever I've got at the moment."
Okay, this makes it less cringy to me then. I suppose it's no different than me, white as can be, lipsynching to Regulate.
See, the real version is way, way better than this. This version sucks.
Why are people commenting during the jackal?!
Oh, no, no, we waited until AFTER The Jackal before commenting! 😀😀😀 I wouldn't dream of interrupting CJ!!
Never comment during The Jackal
Perfect comment lol
Exactly!
Don't ever talk to me during The Jackal.
3:07 Sam becomes the whitest guy in the room at this point.
THANK YOU! It's possibly the most cringe worthy moment of the whole series.
@@thegrahamdalorian185 Ya know, if Sorkin came out and said THIS was the reason he wanted to write off Sam from the show, I would have completely understood that
@@thegrahamdalorian185 I dunno, Josh's awkward neck movement is also hilariously cringy :D
When CJ does the Jackal, you stop what you are doing and go watch. Tell everyone to not talk to you while you watch.
It's unfortunate that it's only performed once during the show.
Probably the most anticipated video on this entire channel
Allison Janney to Empire Online: "We shot it twice because I, of course, did it as Allison and I was really getting into it. He [Sorkin] said, 'No, you have to do it as C.J. and she's not as good at doing it as you are!' Even though she was known for it at a silly college thing she did or whatever. So we had to reshoot it with me being a little more unsure of myself."
After Sam talked it up? C.J. oughta be as good as Janney could make her. No need to play it down.
@@unkannyunkanny9232 Sam was trying (unsuccessfully) to impress Mallory. The point is that it's fun, and it's special to this group. It reminds me of an interview I saw recently with Hannah Waddingham, about how when she sang as Rebecca on "Ted Lasso," she sang in character, as someone who had a good voice and liked karaoke -- not as Hannah Waddingham, the veteran stage performer.
Her real version is ten thousand times better than this. It's on UA-cam
Oh, You got to love CJ doing the Jackal.
We all knew this day would come.
Toby’s smoking in the West Wing!
Why does Bartlett have to go outside to have a cigarette....when there's multiple scenes in the series showing Toby puffing a cigar indoors?
I think he just thinks it is polite to do so. His father used to smoke so much and it left bad impression on him; so much that he didn't want to do it around the people closest to him, people he considered his family
Bartlett is married to a physician, whereas Toby never was. Abby can control Jeb’s behavior, and anyone’s in the Residence, but not in the Executive Office Building, especially when she isn’t there.
Would love to see the clip of Ainsley Hayes meeting the President in her office when she’s wearing the robe from sitting in paint from season 2x13 cause it’s hilarious
I never quite got why Sam didn’t say the memo was opposition prep from the start
Plot device, Mr. Frodo... Plot device.
Because he didn't think he should have to, because he's off duty and didn't want to get into it, because he's proud of his work and because his boss asked him to write it.
allison janney as a guest judge on drag race when
3:01 Some say the shadows were scary. I thot they were very sexy.
Since the 90's I've gone Republican 80% of the time and honestly I'd love to have these guys in charge. Starting Jan 25 I think I'm gonna just pretend that's the case.
I have never understood this scene. I never heard of The Jackal song before this episode, and never heard of it since. Does Sorkin think the typical viewers will know this song and be as excited as *every* other character is to see CJ do this? And then we finally get to see this performance and I'm like "That's it? Why is every other character acting like this is the best thing ever?"
Am I alone in this, as most of the other comments here seem to be pro-Jackal.
i agree with you, i don’t get it
It's not something you're expected to know, nobody had heard of it before. It's an in-joke for the characters.
One of the things that makes this show work is how easy it is to believe this crew has YEARS of history together. This is a thing CJ has done before at parties.
I didn't know the song when it aired. Just the key things are a) CJ is getting into the groove which seems to be against character and b) you have to listen to the song - it's hilarious.
That's the point. We get to see people at the White house not take themselves seriously.
It's clearly a thing CJ does sometimes that they all love and it's obviously part of their history. She's a hard-working, serious, straight-laced woman and this is her being goofy and not a little sexy too.
@@PVS3 Yes, that's clear. But the way it's presented is like the audience should recognize what "The Jackal" song is and what someone lip-synching to it means.
Maybe this one shoulda stayed in the vault haha
FINALLY! What took you so long? Have you've seen the show?😂
Like a nerdy version of Caligula
FINALLY
I always thought it would have been monumental if - after ALL the build up - they never actually showed CJ doing The Jackal or even explained what it was.
I've always had a problem with Leo screwing around with Sam and Mallory's dating.
It's a fathers of daughters thing.
This has never lived up to the hype.
Watch her doing it on Arsenio Hall from 2013 - it's so so so much better. This is just cringe
Sam I thought you were a fool for giving Malory the time of day back when the show first ran. I'm older and wiser now and think he should get a restraining order.
amen 😂
I love CJ as a character but the shadows during The Jackal make her look intensely creepy.
Because it's the Jackal
Leo’s daughter was so annoying
Aaron Sorkin couldn't write women to save his life lol
@@andyshepard4309 How can you say that in a show where CJ, Abbey and Ainsley exist?
@@TheMaddJonall three greatly improved by the actresses that portrayed them. Ainsley on paper is almost a manic pixie dream Republican, but the actress makes it work. The other two are better written, specially Abby, but imo CJ had a lot of "guy writing woman" moments that go unnoticed because Janney plays her with such dignity.
Lame
First
I love TWW but I skip this part every time. Too cringey.
The Jackal was never funny. It was always the cringiest cringe that ever was. Lip syncing? That’s it? I don’t get it. CRINGE
It's weird how bad this version is compared to the real one she does - she did it on Arsenio Hall in 2013. It's on UA-cam. It's awesome.
This version is pathetic.
