Stevie Nicks is Rock Royalty and one of the greatest female voices in any music genre. Stevie along with Ann Wilson (Heart) and Janis Joplin are some of my favorite female Rock singers but there are so many more!
All in all, “Edge of Seventeen” is about the sadness Nicks felt after the death of her musical hero John Lennon and an uncle of hers named Jonathan. Both deaths occurred just days apart in the month of December 1980. Nicks got the song’s title from a conversation she had with singer Tom Petty’s wife Jane Benyo. During the conversation, Nicks had asked Jane when she met Tom for the first time. Jane replied Nicks by telling her that she and Tom met when she was “at the age of seventeen”. Interestingly, because of Jane’s southern accent (which was very thick), Nicks assumed what Jane said was “the edge of seventeen”. She liked the phrase and decided instantly it would make a good title for a song. In 2019, Stevie Nicks made history by becoming the first female artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice 52
While there is that official version there are many of us Stevie fans that believe there to be a different story. As you may notice there is nothing in the lyrics of one losing out on life. But there is more of a heart being broken. So believe what you may.
@@GaBoyInKy Except that it's true. She first revealed it in the liner notes of her "Timespace" greatest hits compilation, then told the story on her "Behind The Music" profile on VH1.
Stevie was friends with Tom Petty’s wife. She had a thick southern accent. She told Stevie she met Tom At the Age of Seventeen and Stevie thought she said Edge of Seventeen. She also talks about an uncle who past away. She was very close to him. And another part of the song she is talking about John Lennon who she was close to.
Stevie Nicks wrote this song about the death of her uncle and the death of John Lennon. The line about the "Words from a poet and a voice from a choir" refers to Lennon. Nicks spoke about the "white-winged dove" and what this song means to her: "It became a song about violent death, which was very scary to me because at that point no one in my family had died. To me, the white-winged dove was for John Lennon the dove of peace, and for my uncle it was the white-winged dove who lives in the saguaro cactus - that's how I found out about the white-winged dove, and it does make a sound like whooo, whooo, whooo. I read that somewhere in Phoenix and thought I would use that in this song. The dove became exciting and sad and tragic and incredibly dramatic. Every time I sing this song I have that ability to go back to that two-month period where it all came down. I've never changed it, and I can't imagine ending my show with any other song. It's such a strong, private moment that I share in this song." Stevie came up with the title when she asked Tom Petty's wife Jane when the couple met. Jane said, "At the age of seventeen," but she had a very strong southern accent and Stevie thought she said "the edge of seventeen," which makes a great song title. Telling the story in a 1981 interview with Los Angeles disc jockey Robert W. Morgan, Nicks said she told Jane: "It's got to be 'edge.' 'The Edge of Seventeen' is perfect. I'm going to write a song."
Thanks for the valuable information! If you hadn't seen the long version of Rhiannon in 76 on Midnight Special I suggest doing so. She,was on 🔥 Fire 🔥. Dreams is fantastic! Good her and Lindsey reunite love seeing them sing together.
I think the song has a lot of poignancy for so many of us, especially over the last few years. From cancer, covid, mass shootings & the sheer number of lives lost around the world this weekend alone - we've all lost family & friends. Death is very rarely not violent & I think Stevie captured the feelings of someone left behind in a raw & powerful way. The fact she always ends her concerts with it also shows how the events have stayed with her, as they do with us all.
You know what an "earworm" is, right? A song, melody, sound, or phrase that seems to just pop into your head out of the depths of your memory and keeps popping in at random times just to drive you a little crazy with its repetition. Well, this song was the first earworm that I ever actually really enjoyed, popping into my head around 2020 after being an old favorite in the 1980's. I now use this song to drive away any unwanted earworms! Works every time!!!
This reaction knocked me back 40 years. In 1981, I was in the US Navy and my submarine popped up in Australia after spending a few months underwater. Stevie Nicks “Bella Donna” album had just came out in Australia and that was the first time I heard any songs from it. Now any song from that album makes me think of being 21 years old in Australia.
There's a live performance where Stevie's ending the concert with this song & you can see the love flowing back & forth between her & the audience. You'd love it & it's worth reacting to for the beauty of it, even though you just did the studio version. Believe me, we'd love to see y'all react to it too.💙☮💙
It is my fave version of this song - is the one you're talking about the one where she gets the big Snoopy and all the roses and flowers? It was out of this world!
@@jbjacobs9514 Yes! That's the one. I wish they'd react to it. I think Asia, especially, would enjoy seeing Stevie's rapport with her fans & how gracious she is toward them when thanking them. I forgot what the video's titled, which tour or the location. I should've looked it up. Might still. Or do you happen to know?
Cute when you guys recognize a riff or line from a sample : ) One big reason it took so many of us raised in the 60s/70s/80s so long to warm up to any rap/hip hop is exactly that though...every early rap tune we heard was a sample of some song we grew up with...lol. Try "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" duet with Tom Petty.
Stevie Nicks is in the 'Bootylicious' video. She is dancing while playing guitar. You may not have known who she was when it came out. That's okay because now you do as you expand your knowledge and appreciation of all types of music. Keep on that journey.
40 years ago, Stevie Nicks struck out from Fleetwood Mac, launched a solo career - created this iconic song in the process!! When I was in High School every girl wanted to be Stevie Nicks …. And every boy wanted us to be Stevie Nicks!! I had the hippie skirts & long blonde hair but I would never come close to Stevie’s beauty!! 😘 She’s in my top three female vocalists of all time! ☮️
This song was written about her uncle who got sick and was diagnosed with cancer and died one week later she was with him in the hospital, but nobody else is there as far as running down the hall and also about John Lennon. In someway
I'm a huge fan of Stevie and Fleetwood Mac tho this is not my favorite. Dreams is incredible. Tho my all time favorite is Rhiannon the long version at the Midnight Special in 1976. She was on 🔥 Fire 🔥. Her solo Stand Back is very good.
Ms. Nicks may be the most underrated rock and roll artist ever. Including by me. I’ve heard this song a million times but didn’t realize how genuinely great it is until I listened to it carefully just now with you. She is a badass.
Before they joined Fleetwood Mac, Stevie and Lindsey Buckingham made their own album titled simply Buckingham Nicks. The entire album is phenomenal. Suggestions from that album: Crying In The Night, Long Distance Winner, Races Are Run, Crystal, and the monumental Frozen Love. Best Wishes - love your reactions!

One of my favorite female artists. I just love her. Kelly Clarkson cover of this is fantastic. Now if you get a chance to see Stevie concert do it!!!! I’ve seen her 11 times and I have no regrets.
I think I just found a new favorite channel. Love your style and reviews. Edge of Seventeen is a classic, I was five years old when it came out, my mom would blast this record in the house and years later in the car with the T-tops off in her Firebird. No other generation like the 80’s. ❤️❤️ On a side note, Stevie is well known for giving tons of time a money to our veterans and sick children agencies, she’s a low key, genuine and giving person.
Most of this song is about when Stevie's uncle died. Her and her cousin were the only ones in the house when he died. The white winged dove symbolizes his spirit leaving his body. Stevie often has different things going on in her songs, but that is a main part of it. While we're discussing great singers, please react to Kelly Clarkson doing I will always love you from the ACM awards. She is not only a great singer but also a proud Texan.
As black folks, you have so many amazing singers. Actually y’all dominate the charts because your vocal range is unmatched. But and here’s the big butt and listen to my point. In the early 80s, Stevie Nicks dominated the charts because of her lyrics her songs, her voice and the grit. She seemed vulnerable, and she also seemed like a chick that could kick your ass if she had to. That’s what I love about her and thank you so much for featuring her.
Waddy Watchel is the seasoned guitarist who did session work for number of artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Keith Richards, Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, and manyl others, turned the definitive rhythmic sound for this track. He is well a respected and valued by many for his vast contributions to music.
STEVIE NICKS IS THE GREATEST SINGER AND GREATEST SONGWRITER EVER AND THIS IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER THE BEST OF THE BEST EVERYONE LOVES THIS PERFECT SONG!!!@
I'm a HUGE Stevie Nick's fan. I've seen her several times in concert both solo and with Fleetwood Mac. She's a national treasure. Please check out the Rumours album.
Stevie was having lunch one day with Tom Petty's wife Jane. Jane mentioned to Stevie that she met Tom at the "Age Of Seventeen". With Jane's southern accent, Stevie thought it sounded like "Edge Of Seventeen". Stevie wrote it down on a napkin. She thought it would make a good name for a song title. Thanks and God Bless.
When Stevie Nick's notes she was all alone standing in the hall ... and the tears were not heard at all ... and a Nightbird makes the call.. .. was reference to when she went back home in Phoenix to visit her favorite Uncle in hospital, but when she arrived (in real life) he died right there in front of her .... And she was in shock since his family wasn't there ... and the doctors & nurses weren't there on the spot... she was left standing in the hall all alone looking for anyone to help.. but the Night bird took him away... John Lennon died days before her favorite Uncle and she wrote the song for both of them.. She was devastated & inspired at time of writing this song ... but it sounds like a teenage love song too ... she is mystical masterful in her writing... I believe she said she put that small piece of real life in this song then wrote all around it to finish it to make it complete.... Most fans think the whole song is about their personal event but sometimes it's just a small part in the song..
Stevie Nicks is right there with the Wilson sisters, Joan Jett, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, and countless others that make me proud to be a woman. Their unabashed badass-ness is what sets them apart from regular singers and, to me, they are the epitome of what a woman should be. Thank y'all for this reaction. It reminded me that I need to go polish my tiara. P.L.U.R.R. from Temple!
This song was written by Stevie Nicks over a three month period it started with the death of John Lennon. Stevie did not know Lennon but says her producer Jimmy Iovine was devastated as he was close with a John Lennon. She went home to Arizona and her uncle was dying of cancer and she and her cousin were home alone with him when he passed away early in the evening . That’s where I went running down the hall in flood of tears . It’s a very deep and very personal song she penned. She is a goddamn legend.
Stevie Nicks wrote this song about the death of her uncle - and the death of John Lennon. Her lyrics are so poignant to both of those losses. *Destiny's Child’s song samples from Stevie. They even had Stevie in their video for “Bootylicious”.
I always thought this song had a gritty sound, that driving guitar and her voice. Those backing singers are outstanding too. I've loved this song for so many years, but ever since I saw School of Rock, it makes me think of Joan Cusack rockin' out to it, hahaha!
Asia Asia Asia, you said there was a steady beat but she was singing off the best...geez, ive tried to explain this exact thought to so many and noone ever knows what i am speaking about...totally agree and she is one of the few few artists who do this
You should have checked out the Original Video to see her sing this! Awesome! Please check out Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac Original videos - Seven Wonders - Rooms on Fire - Talk to me - Tango in the Night
The music of the past is the thread and fabric that weaves into the music of today. Because they sample the beats because their isn’t anything that compares how beautifully it is created.
While the song is about both John Lennon and her uncle, who passed away around the same time, the first part of the song is mainly about Lennon. "He was no more than a baby then." John was 24 when she first "laid eyes on him" on the Ed Sullivan show. He seemed broken heated (most of his songs were lamenting over love). And at the airing of that night (Feb 1964), Stevie was 16 and wouldn't turn 17 until May. The music was hauntingly familiar and he had the words of a poet and the voice of a choir. The part towards the end about her running down the hall, she woke up to the news John had been murdered on NYC, but no one was around to consol her or help her "find the answers." Unfortunately, Stevie never met John Lennon, which is one of her biggest regrets. She is a true poet, legend and rock and roll royalty. An amazing woman.
Stevie was about 20 and singing to her lover who was younger, almost 17. She described this song as "sort of about how no amount of money or power could save them. [She] was angry, helpless, hurt, sad."
I'm singing and bopping to this with you 😁. Fantastic song and it really showcases Stephanie's voice! Guys, please react to the live in concert video where she's wearing all white. It's magnificent. This whole Bella Donna album is superb
The song title came from a friend of Stevie's who had a thick southern accent. She was telling Stevie how she met her husband "at the age of 17" but Stevie heard "edge" and liked how it sounded.
In one week, in December of 1980, Stevie Nicks suffered two blows: John Lennon was gunned down in New York City and her uncle John died after a long battle with cancer. The trauma and grief of the two events inspired her hit “Edge of Seventeen.” "And the days go by like a strand in the wind,’ that’s how fast those days were going by during my uncle’s illness, and it was so upsetting to me,” said Nicks of the lyrics in a 1981 interview. “The part that says ‘I went today… maybe I will go again… tomorrow’ refers to seeing him the day before he died. He was home and my aunt had some music softly playing, and it was a perfect place for the spirit to go away. The white-winged dove in the song is a spirit that is leaving a body, and I felt a great loss at how both Johns were taken. ‘I hear the call of the nightbird singing, come away, come away.’"
If i was blind she's still a goddess. If i was deaf shes still a goddess If i was a monk in Tibet shes still a goddess. When she come on the radio on my way to work, its gonna be a great day lol.
By the way the sing is partly about teen violence. Doves are a simple of peace, hence the doves crying. This was her first solo album and she was already a rising legend in Fleetwood Mac. Super soulful broad huge heart, very intimate song writer. Her performances are awesome. I've seen her Liv re with Fleetwood Mac and on her own, she always gives you a 100% soulful performance.
Destiny's Child sampled this song for "Bootylicious". Stevie Nicks released this song in 1981. She doesn't sample others. They sample her.

45+ a lot. She is 73 now, so she was 70 or 71 when dropped it in 2020.
A deep cut ROCKER of Stevie's is "Enchanted" IMO one of her best.
One of my favorite tunes by Stevie, it really shows her ability to growl, lol, love it! Thanks Asia and BJ, see you soon.
Stevie Nicks wrote this song about the death of her uncle - and the death of John Lennon. Her lyrics are so poignant to both of those losses. *Destiny's Child’s song samples from Stevie. They even had Stevie in their video for “Bootylicious”.
You are in for some really good music. More Stevie; what a rabbit hole
No one beats Stevie! Queen of rock!
Stevie is one if the best women rockers/ vocalists solo and w/ Fleetwood Mac.
Yes, this was sampled in Bootylicious. In fact, Stevie even made a cameo in the video!
Thanks for the info!
Check out her many hits like this one when she went solo…” Rooms on Fire”,Stand Back”,etc.
If I recall, Stevie Nicks features in the Bootylicious video, at the beginning. It was Destiny's Child who sampled this. 💜
All these years and I just now read all the lyrics I missed so much lol
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL! Sampled by others later...
I always thought this song had a gritty sound, that driving guitar and her voice. Those backing singers are outstanding too.
I've loved this song for so many years, but ever since I saw School of Rock, it makes me think of Joan Cusack rockin' out to it, hahaha!
OMG I was dead when she sang this live in Oakland, so fierce!
I seen her live like 5 years ago and her voice was just as amazing!
Yes.. They sampled This song and Stevie Nicks does a cameo in Bootylicious video. Go and watch, you'll see her
I listened to Stevie nicks so much. Totally 80s sound feelin' the vibe.
Yes indeed D.C. did sample the guitar from this for Bootyliscious, good ear there Asia! Stevie also made a cameo in the video.
She is the black witch with the angel voice
It was sampled for Bootylicious and Stevie Nicks was actually in the music video for it.
Watch the video Stevie is playing riff in Bootylicious!
The music of the past is the thread and fabric that weaves into the music of today. Because they sample the beats because their isn’t anything that compares how beautifully it is created.
Queen Stevie at her best. Thanks.
Just like Heart it's that voice !
Stevie has that great voice that just takes you to the woodshed .
Stevie nicks is the queen of Rock. Her voice is angelic and can never be duplicated by anyone. When she performed if it was effortless.
Hope you all watch her perform, she's so awesome ❤️
Stevie nicks voice is seasoned... Thats what you call it..
Stevie! 🐐 🐐 🐐
She brang the heat!! She was like, "I'm here to tell my Mu-tha, F*-king, Story, And I'm, gonna, tell it!!"
It is her coming-of-age song and I always wish that I had been there for her to find. LOL❤
This is a song about the illness death of a younger uncle. Also one of her backup singers is her sister. Keep on keeping on. Big 💕💕💕💕💕
The song title came from a friend of Stevie's who had a thick southern accent. She was telling Stevie how she met her husband "at the age of 17" but Stevie heard "edge" and liked how it sounded.
Stevie says that Prince was inspired to write "When Doves Cry" by "Edge of Seventeen."
Yeah you could sing this Asia
I heard this song inspired “when doves cry”
If i was blind she's still a goddess. If i was deaf shes still a goddess
If i was a monk in Tibet shes still a goddess. When she come on the radio on my way to work, its gonna be a great day lol.
You should see it live from back in the 80s it was impressive
By the way the sing is partly about teen violence. Doves are a simple of peace, hence the doves crying. This was her first solo album and she was already a rising legend in Fleetwood Mac. Super soulful broad huge heart, very intimate song writer. Her performances are awesome. I've seen her Liv re with Fleetwood Mac and on her own, she always gives you a 100% soulful performance.
Stevie Nicks!! ❤💕👊👍
What a great voice!
