Watched this fight with my dad...I’ll never forget. I said How long do u think this will last? Pops said Maybe 3 rounds. I saw this fight with my Dad too at a Chinese restaurant at the small bar while we were waiting for a table. We watched every Tyson fight together but when this one came around it was supposed to be such a bad fight we didn’t bother...so it happened to be on at the bar and there was the small dinner crowd of about 20 people all crammed into the bar eating Chinese food and GOING NUTS as the fight went on!! I could only imagine if we saw it at a larger sports bar. Everyone there knew Tyson was in Serious trouble by the 6th round... but when BD got knocked down we all thought he was done. Needless to say when BD got up and knocked Tyson down and out in the 10th the place went batshit crazy!! Great memory!! I was 18 then and my dad died in 2009.

This was when Mike’s sparring partner knocked him down right? Mike was woefully unprepared for this fight and his entire career was beginning to slide at this point. That said, being the first guy to not only knock him down, but beat him in competition will keep his name in the history books forever. Mike did beat him in the 8th round though.

Tyson got his mouthpiece knocked out and is crawling around like a drunk guy trying to find the car keys he dropped. He can barely stand up. There’s a big difference, that’s why it’s the refs discretion and there’s margin for interpretation.

This was truly one of those "I don't believe what I just saw" moments. No one who was around back then could of imagined Tyson ever loosing a fight. That's how scary good he was.

This was so huge… I was 4 years old when this happened and I knew that Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson. It’s hard to explain to people just how big this upset was. Little kids who weren’t even in Kindergarten yet remember when this happened.

Buster Douglas was Not the first fighter to get up after being knocked down by Tyson. I think even Spinks got up once in that epic title fight. But watch his older fights, a lot of fighters got up after being knocked down, but tyson was a master finisher and would quickly finish off anyone he got down who got back up. And.... that's what's crazy about this fight. If Douglas got up with 30 seconds left in the round, Tyson would've easily finished him off, no question. But fortunately for Douglas the moment he got back up, the bell rang. Also, he's lucky it happend in the later rounds as Tyson was already tired and by the time the next round started, Tyson didn't have the energy to sustain a flury.

everyone could argue about the ref count or that Buster had 13 seconds, but Buster clearly wasnt knocked out, it was on the ref, he just waited a few more seconds to recover but he could have gone back up sooner if the count was faster. There wasnt an ounce of fear or quitting on Buster that night.

The guy that hugged mike after the loss is a legend. We all know what it’s like to lose and have nobody there. But lose and still have some one there for you is a powerful feeling.

It's standard practice, a boxer coming up from a knockdown can be disorientated and lash out at the ref believing them to be their opponent, the "hug" is the ref controlling their arms to prevent this.

I live in Columbus,don't watch boxing, but I ordered the fight on a hunch about a minute before it started in support of a home town guy taking his big time shot. I don't think I've ever seen anyone as focused as Buster was that night he had fire in his eyes from the start. Quite the moment to witness the fall of the invincible Iron Mike.
To people complaining about the ref's reactions to the two knock downs; Douglas got planted from one very good punch. When he gets up, he still has his legs under him, stands up straight and is looking at his opponent. Meaning, clearly Douglas is aware of where he is and what's happening and wants to keep fighting. Tyson takes a heavy shot and then about three more where he clearly can no longer defend himself. He's out on his feet, he's just a tough S.O.B. so he doesn't fall. However, while the ref is counting, Tyson clearly has no idea where he is. He's got jelly legs, he's fumbling around for his mouth piece, his eyes are unfocused, he's not standing straight and attentive. He's out. If the ref had let him keep going, Douglas would have just caused more damage against a defenseless opponent. This was a really good job by the ref recognizing the differences. He made a judgement call with each and he was right on both counts. Great fight, great upset, great story.

Buster Douglas was Not the first fighter to get up after being knocked down by Tyson. I think even Spinks got up once in that epic title fight. But watch his older fights, a lot of fighters got up after being knocked down, but tyson was a master finisher and would quickly finish off anyone he got down who got back up. And.... that's what's crazy about this fight. If Douglas got up with 30 seconds left in the round, Tyson would've easily finished him off, no question. But fortunately for Douglas the moment he got back up, the bell rang. Also, he's lucky it happend in the later rounds as Tyson was already tired and by the time the next round started, Tyson didn't have the energy to sustain a flury.

everyone could argue about the ref count or that Buster had 13 seconds, but Buster clearly wasnt knocked out, it was on the ref, he just waited a few more seconds to recover but he could have gone back up sooner if the count was faster.
There wasnt an ounce of fear or quitting on Buster that night.

I always loved how the ref hugged Mike, as if to say "It's okay buddy, I'm sorry."
It's standard practice, a boxer coming up from a knockdown can be disorientated and lash out at the ref believing them to be their opponent, the "hug" is the ref controlling their arms to prevent this.

I live in Columbus,don't watch boxing, but I ordered the fight on a hunch about a minute before it started in support of a home town guy taking his big time shot. I don't think I've ever seen anyone as focused as Buster was that night he had fire in his eyes from the start. Quite the moment to witness the fall of the invincible Iron Mike.

To people complaining about the ref's reactions to the two knock downs; Douglas got planted from one very good punch. When he gets up, he still has his legs under him, stands up straight and is looking at his opponent. Meaning, clearly Douglas is aware of where he is and what's happening and wants to keep fighting.
Tyson takes a heavy shot and then about three more where he clearly can no longer defend himself. He's out on his feet, he's just a tough S.O.B. so he doesn't fall. However, while the ref is counting, Tyson clearly has no idea where he is. He's got jelly legs, he's fumbling around for his mouth piece, his eyes are unfocused, he's not standing straight and attentive. He's out. If the ref had let him keep going, Douglas would have just caused more damage against a defenseless opponent.
This was a really good job by the ref recognizing the differences. He made a judgement call with each and he was right on both counts. Great fight, great upset, great story.

At the time, people considered Mike Tyson to be an unstoppable invincible force of nature, especially after the Marvis Frazier fight. Not a single soul believed that Buster Douglas had even a chance of winning. Most men who were betting on the fight weren't betting on who would win, but on what round Mike Tyson would win by KO! Yet Buster Douglas managed to win through the determination he got from his mother! He truly shocked the world!

Buster Douglas had such a big heart to win.. such courage .. he went somewhere where no man before him had gone ...up to that point every opponent that Tyson had faced was as good as beaten before the first bell of the fight ...coz Tyson had mentally destroyed them by fear ...most fighters had accepted the fact he would win ..Buster had the heart of a lion .. what a warrior this brother was

I remember watching this fight with my father when it aired. Dad fell asleep moments before it happened and I woke him up screaming, "Tyson got knocked down!" He looked like a disbelieving ghost being woken up to that shocking news. Tyson was on a tear that no one believed could be stopped.

This was so shocking I remember exactly where I was, and what I was doing when I turned on the TV and saw that Tyson has lost. The Ruiz is an awesome accomplishment. But Douglas vs Tyson was definitely "way"! And to the guy that ask how, you just had to live in that time and realize how unbeatable Mike Tyson was thought to have been. He destroyed everyone you thought might have a chance. No offense, but if you ask 'how', or say it's not 'way', then I'm guessing you were around then.
