How to Code in NVivo

- Here is a walkthrough of some basic functions of NVivo - enough to start coding transcripts! Below is the step-by-step outline of what is covered in the video:
1. Open NVivo
2. Create New Project, name and save
3. Import file (text you are coding)
4. Create Tab -- Code -- “Reasons for use”
5. Create another code “Stress”
6. Drag into “Reasons for use” (child code)
7. Create another code “Easy to hide”
8. Drag into “Reasons for use”
9. Start Coding
10. Turn on Coding Strips
11. Adjust view so you can see all of the text
12. Select text you want to code, right click, Code selection, Existing code
13. Upload another file
14. Annotations/Memos
15. Select text you want to code, right click, New Annotation, type what you want to memo
16. Explore Tab -- Queries -- Coding
17. “any of these codes” select codes with arrow
18. Run query
19. Can download and save these reports with quotes
20. Word cloud
21. Word Frequency
22. Text search
23. Type in word, can get “counts”
24. Two coders same file
25. Make sure your profile is up to date
26. Settings -- check name and initials -- Apply
27. Check # of users: File -- Project Properties -- Users
28. To add another user: back to Settings -- enter new name and initials -- Apply
28. Check # of users: File -- Project Properties -- Usersshould now see the new profile added)
29. Two coders different files
*make sure the base NVIVO project working off of is EXACTLY the same (files, codes and hierarchy, etc.)
30. Import one project into another: Import -- Project
31. Can check number of users again (see above)
