Thanks so much for this session, it's an eye openner, well structure and detailed. Dr.Adu please I will need some guidance. I am working on my Masters thesis and I will use qualitative analysis, analysing secondary Data sources. How do I collect the data in response to my research question, transcribe and code the necessary information?
You're welcome! Great question! I'll be able to adequately address this question during my methodology consultation. If you're interested, you can email me: info@drphilipadu.com
Hey, this video was really helpful. I just have one question: my child codes aren't being aggregated under my parent codes (references and files). Will this pose an issue for analysis?
Hi, i was wondering if you could help me with a problem. I'm using Nvivo on mac and i'm trying to upload a classification sheet. The spreadsheet is made on xcel and i made sure to save it as .csv. When I import it and get to step 3 of 4 in the classifcation it is all blank and won't let click on the 'as name.' When i try and save it anyway it comes up with an error and doesn't let me. What am i doing wrong?
I have a question about sub-questions. How do you create a container for this? Also, what is the difference between Code and New Top level code in Nvivo 14?
Great question, You create create containers for the sub-questions the same way that the main research questions were created. The only difference is that for the sub-question, you can add a letter to the label. For example the first sub-research question under the main research question could be labeled: (RQ1a) and the second sub-question could be labeled (RQ1b). In terms of the difference between code and New Top Level code. I see a 'New Top Level Code' as a 'Parent code' meaning a code that have a child code under it. For example the container for your research question could be a parent code and the codes generated under the question could be child codes.
Thank you so much for this great and insightful tutorial. Question please: If I want to merge 2 child codes into a sub-parent code under a RQ code. How do i do this please?
Thank you so much for this video! its really helpful:) just a question about the demographics excel sheet. I was trying to connect the excel sheet but there were no instructions like you showed in the video. Also it would not allow me to double check if the demographics are connected to my transcripts since there is no option of choosing a project map. The only two options available for maps were mind maps and concept maps. How can I check if the demographics are actually connected with my data. I am using a MacBook I don't know if that makes a difference in terms of the software.
You're welcome!! Mac doesn't have project map so I would use 'matrix coding' function: ua-cam.com/video/GbCa5jVKLbY/v-deo.htmlsi=GeEmEOiUGfHNTXvf&t=679 Also this video would help: ua-cam.com/video/WiWnpUEzi3M/v-deo.htmlsi=vgPy-KV8QQ391ZHG&t=256
Well done Dr. Please I would like you to help me answer this question: In case of a focus group discussion, am I still going to create individual files or cases for all the participants? Thank you.
Thank you Dr. I appreciate the quality of information from your videos. Just want to make a correction ...content or thematic ..which ever goes well with deductive or inductive coding ..what you described was rather the inductive process of coding and/ or deductive process of coding ...content analysis differs from thematic in that the former deals with interpreting words or making meaning from words, themes and concepts from the data ..reasons why arguments hold until date that it is more grounded on sociolinguistics and the pure artistic disciplines , in contrast to thematic which is aimed at identifying patterns and grouping meanings into buckets called themes. My understanding..will be glad to hear what you or other thinks ...
You're welcome! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about content and thematic analysis. You're right about thematic analysis which focuses on generating codes/themes based on the patterns and relevant information identified in the data. Therefore, thematic analysis is more of a inductive process. However, (qualitative) content analysis is more of an deductive because we normally go through the data using predefined codes/themes (i.e. code frame) - connecting the codes/themes to relevant information found in the data. Thanks again for your comment.
Thank you so much, sir, for the concrete insights on qualitative analysis. Sir, as you have mentioned, give codes to the research questions. I have only one research question to address; can I make codes for the respective interview questions I asked to address my RQ. Can i do like that ?
You're welcome!! Normally, we code data to address the research question. So in your case, a researcher your sole goal at the data analysis state is to address the 'one' research question. However, if addressing individual interview questions would help you to address the research question, then you could generate codes for the interview questions.
Thanks again for the very detailed information. Very helpful. I'm still unclear about the difference between cases and files, and when they are used. Can you clarify when you use the case? It almost seems like they are interchangeable. I have been setting files for the transcript and demographic data.
You're welcome Michelle! 'Files' are the transcript that you upload into NVivo for analysis. However, cases are containers you create to house the files and anything connecting to them. For example, Let's say you have uploaded a transcript (i.e. file) for 'Participant 1' into NVivo, you can then create a case for this participant that will house their file, demographic information and codes/themes connected to the file. I hope this helps!
Has this happened to anyone? I recently opened NVivo 12 plus and when I open the node to view the data, all of the written responses have been pushed up against the left margin and are impossible to view. It is like when an Excel column becomes too narrow. Does anyone know how to rectify this, as I can't read my written responses as they are 3 letters wide?
You could try zooming out using the function at the bottom-right of the software. Second, you could try moving the line that divides the data and the codes. Moving it to the left side may help.
Help!! I've uploaded demographics from XL. I tried the test to see and it says when I go to maps and it says the map must be unique in the folder. please help
It would be great if you can schedule a methodology consultation to address your concerns. If you are interested, you can email me: info@drphilipadu.com
My initial reaction is this is a really complicated program that, in a sense, is not straightforward. I'm going to spend time really looking and your tutorials. I appreciate what you have done!
This is fantastic. I was ready to throw in the towel on NVivo 14 until I found your videos. I do have one question. Is there a way to automatically highlight in the document what you have coded so you can see visually what parts of the document have already been coded? I tried to use the highlighting feature and it was not working for me.
I'm glad the video was help! In terms of viewing were you have coded, I normally, go to 'Highlight' and select 'Coding for Selected Items' and go the the codes to select all codes. I haven't seen a way to automatically do that.
Hi ! Thank you so much for this fantastic video, it has been so helpful. For my research question, I am doing a follow-up study and I would be interviewing participants that have been previously interviewed. When creating a case do I import the previous transcript and the new transcript for the participant in one case? or am i importing the previous and new transcripts separately.. to form different "cases"?
You’re welcome! Yes, put both previous and follow-up transcripts for the participant in one word document and import it. With this, you can create one case for it.
Very helpful videos for a beginner like me. Thank you so much for clearly explaining the steps. One doubt: My files (Interview Transcripts )and not connecting to the imported sociodemographic sheet , I have checked the file name and first column in the sheet, it is the same. Could you help me to resolve this error?
@@drphilipadu No and it was resolved when i checked your old tutorial videos.. thank you so much for sharing these tutorials and your response to comment. .... Great effort 😃

Thank you! With content analysis, I would first create the codes/themes under their respective research questions. You then review the transcripts selecting relevant excerpts and dropping them into the containers (codes and themes).
Hi. let me ask one question. I only code one in p 1 for one reference but in the file description , it showed 2 codes and 2 reference for participant 1 but in the codes, it is correct, 1 code and 1 reference. How can I fix this problem.
I am very happy that your video on this nvivo coding is very helpful. i am not very clear as to how you create the containers for your research questions. Can you please make a special video on that aspect. I see also you were showing a powerpoint on in the video which is very interesting as well. I would like to have it if you do not mind sir.

Thank you, sir. This was extremely helpful. You're doing an amazing job. It feels like I am really getting the hang of it now. Hopefully I'll be able to start using Nvivo for my work soon! Just had one question, while uploading the demographic information, a number of options show up - Create new attributes if they do not exist, Update the classification of existing items, Replace attribute values of existing values or cases. What do these exactly mean? Thanks again!
You're welcome! I'm glad the videos are helpful! Concerning your question: "Create new attributes if they do not exist" - if you check this, the system will create new demographic variables if they are not already create in NVivo. "Update the classification of existing items" - you check this if you want the system to revise categories already created in NVivo. "Replace attribute values of existing values or cases" - you select this option if you already have demographic variable values in NVivo for each participant but you want to update them by uploading current values. I hope this helps!
first of all thank you for your tutorial videos. I want to ask whether we can edit the file that already imported to the nvivo? Because when i edit inside nvivo, eg when i added extra interview to the same file, then it seems that i cannot highlight the file and drag into the code anymore?
You’re welcome! Yes you can edit. I’m not sure when the added portion can’t be coded. You can save your project and close it and reopen it. Let’s see whether this works.
Excellent video! Thank you so much for creating this tutorial. I'm new to Nvivo and your explanations were very clear. To consider - I'd love to see a video with examples on Values Coding.
Thank you always Dr. Adu. Your videos are very helpful. Please I have two questions: 1. What if I have one research question for two interviews/focus groups from two different contexts, how do I create a container for both the research question and the two interviews, Is that possible? At the end I will generate themes for the research question base on the codes from the two interviews/ focus groups. I am thinking at the discussion stage I may draw some similarities or differences for the two contexts where I had the interviews and maybe refer back to the codes. 2. If I have different transcripts for different research questions under the same project, can I upload one file, code, finish it then upload another one and work with it or I have to upload all files even if I do not intend working with all at the same time. Also, can I edit uploaded transcripts in NVivo ?
You're welcome! About your first question: We normally create containers for research questions but not for interviews/focus groups. You can create a variable under 'Case classification' and group the two focus group files/transcripts. About question two: I suggest you upload all the file in one project and code them under their respective research questions. I hope this help!!
So we always have to drag and drop? Imagine coding a 90 page document?😢 no other method? Why can’t I create certain themes and then the system locates them across all pages?
There are other methods. You could use the auto coding function automatically code your data. Alternatively, you can use ChatGPT as a data analysis tool to help generate themes. ua-cam.com/video/45Wl6V8NRJY/v-deo.htmlsi=ZUgoIRj8EJigkVZh
@@drphilipadu Thank you so much for your timely response sir. One more, let’s assume I did like two interviews to address one research question, not a focus group this time but a lengthy interview…what would be the quickest way to present/analyse my data?
Hello Dr! Thank you very much for all your tutorials, they are so thorough and easy to follow- we really appreciate the time and effort you have put into them. I need some advice and hope you won't mind me asking. I'm about to analyse a large data set with four categories of participants and 3 focus groups. The questions were different for each category and each focus group- owing to this, my supervisor and I decided it'd be best to analyse each category separately. Now my question is, how would you suggest I go about this on NVivo: do I create a new project for each category or do I keep all the data in one project? And how would I go about separating the data codes according to each category? In the end, I will need to look at the data collected from all categories holistically to create themes so I'm conflicted on the way forward. I'm still going through your tutorials, so please forgive me if this is a question you've already covered in one of your videos. Thank you.
You’re welcome! You can analyze all the data in a single project. After developing codes and themes, you can run ‘Matrix code query’ to determine which category is connected to each code or theme.

Thank you! You can right click on it he parent codes and select‘aggregate coding from children’
Can you try closing the excel sheet first before uploading it (ua-cam.com/video/WiWnpUEzi3M/v-deo.htmlsi=41KZc74gwhQuqVYG&t=984)
You're welcome! The easiest way is to first create a code under the parent code and drag and drop the two codes you want to marge into the new code.
Mac doesn't have project map so I would use 'matrix coding' function: ua-cam.com/video/GbCa5jVKLbY/v-deo.htmlsi=GeEmEOiUGfHNTXvf&t=679

Well done Dr. Please I would like you to help me answer this question: In case of a focus group discussion, am I still going to create individual files or cases for all the participants? Thank you.
For focus group, we don’t create case for individual participants. We normally create a case for each group
Thank you Adu for simplifying coding in NVivo! You have done it even better and easier to understand than my previous experiences.
You're welcome! I'm glad that it was helpful!
Thanks Sir. Could you please post a video to conclude the whole qualitative data analysis using Nvivo, since now we have learnt the coding part?😊
Sure, here is a link to all the videos: ua-cam.com/video/NwY_XXrpdl4/v-deo.html
Thank you so much, sir, for the concrete insights on qualitative analysis. Sir, as you have mentioned, give codes to the research questions. I have only one research question to address; can I make codes for the respective interview questions I asked to address my RQ. Can i do like that ?
You're welcome!! Normally, we code data to address the research question. So in your case, a researcher your sole goal at the data analysis state is to address the 'one' research question. However, if addressing individual interview questions would help you to address the research question, then you could generate codes for the interview questions.
Very, very helpful. Thank you for doing this.
You're welcome! I'm so glad it was helpful to you.
A clear and concise step by step explanation by you, Philip! Muchas gracias and Wakanda forever!
Thank you so much @khairillrassidy1569 for your kind words!
Dr. Adu, I have one more question for you. Is there a way to edit the demographics table in NVivo? Thanks!
You need to go to case classification to open the table. You can then make edits on the table.
Help!! I've uploaded demographics
from XL.
With time it gets easier! Thank you!!
Thank you very much, your video was helpful.
You're welcome @gocreateopp9239! I'm glad it was helpful!!
Dr. Adu,
Can you create a similar tutorial for NVivo 14 for Mac? TIA.
I'm so sorry, I don't have the Mac version to create similar. Maybe in the near future, I'll create a tutorial.
@@drphilipadu thanks a lot sir
Very helpful videos for a beginner like me. Thank you so much for clearly explaining the steps. One doubt: My files (Interview Transcripts )and not connecting to the imported sociodemographic sheet , I have checked the file name and first column in the sheet, it is the same. Could you help me to resolve this error?
Thank you! Did you create a case for each of the participants/transcripts?
@@drphilipadu No and it was resolved when i checked your old tutorial videos.. thank you so much for sharing these tutorials and your response to comment. .... Great effort 😃
I’m glad it has been resolved 😊!! You’re welcome!

Hello ! I HAVE REALLLY ENJOYED THE TUTORIALS . I AM DOING MY THESIS BUT WILL USE CONTENT ANALYSIS USING NVIVO. HOW DOES IT FIT IN FOR ME ? THANKS
It's not a problem! This came about when you created a case for each file. So I would ignore it.
Can I upload demographic data after coding all transcripts???
Yes, you can!!
Hello Dr. Adu. Do you have a video on focus group coding? thank you so much for this!!
I'm sorry I don't have a video on focus group.
Thank you! Do you have a video that teaches visualization and report functions?
You're welcome!! This video would help: ua-cam.com/video/YefISJUAFks/v-deo.html
YOUR HELPFULLNESS IN THIS VIDOE AND CONSIDERATION FOR NEW LEARNERS COMPELLED ME TO SUBSCRIBE AND COMMENT AS GRATITIDE.
Thank you! I'm glad it is helpful to you.
Sir, can I cover 300 qualitative researches to get the meta-synthesis, thereby creating emergent themes. Can i use only the abstract for that?
We normally analyze the main text but not the abstract.
This video is amazingly clear. Best description of doing coding in NVivo for me. Thanks!
Thank you so much 😊
I am very happy that your video on this nvivo coding is very helpful. i am not very clear as to how you create the containers for your research questions.

Concerning your question:
"Create new attributes if they do not exist" - if you check this, the system will create new demographic variables if they are not already create in NVivo.
"Update the classification of existing items" - you check this if you want the system to revise categories already created in NVivo.
"Replace attribute values of existing values or cases" - you select this option if you already have demographic variable values in NVivo for each participant but you want to update them by uploading current values.
I hope this helps!
@@drphilipadu It does, sir. Thanks a tonne.

Hi! I am looking for the video where u are coding on Nvivo but I lost it, it was on something like indigestive disorders
I'm not sure about the particular one you are referring to but here is the paylist: ua-cam.com/video/NwY_XXrpdl4/v-deo.html
first of all thank you for your tutorial videos.
You’re welcome! I did a presentation on the types of coding. I think it would help: ua-cam.com/video/v_mg7OBpb2Y/v-deo.html
When I am trying to open a code why does an error message appear ‘the top/bottom margins overlap the height of the page’ ?
I'm not sure why. I would contact NVivo developers for help: lumivero.my.site.com/customers/s/nvivo-support?language=en_US
Honestly, you are a blessing to humanity. Thank you so much for demystifying this process. Really really helpful.

Thank you always Dr. Adu. Your videos are very helpful. Please I have two questions:
About your first question:
We normally create containers for research questions but not for interviews/focus groups. You can create a variable under 'Case classification' and group the two focus group files/transcripts.
About question two:
I suggest you upload all the file in one project and code them under their respective research questions.
I hope this help!!
Thank you.
Regarding Q2: I am not done cleaning the transcripts for my RQ 3 but I am done with 1&2 that’s why I want to start coding for those ones 🤔
Why I can't find the social media and website tools anymore?
Can you provide more information about your question so I can adequately address it?
Hi there can you please share your powerpoint presentation for notes. - Thank you

what makes NVIVO FROM Dedoose?
Dedoose is online-based while Nivo is not
When I uploaded my participant information, I did not get the option to create a case for each participant.
You can right-click on each of the files to create cases.

Thank you so much, this is very informative
You're welcome!!
Do you think that the function of autocoding is a viable option or is it too superficial?
I'm not a fun of NVivo autocoding function because it doesn't take into consideration your research questions when generating themes.
I know 'left click and hold' but its not working here
May I know which NVivo version you are using.
Your videos are so helpful! I couldn't've finished my research without your tutorials!
Thank you @anastaciarom88! I'm so glad they were helpful to you.

Thanks alot nice tutorial for beginners
You're welcome!!
Keep it up great presentation
Thank you!!
Your tutorial was excellent! Thank you for making it easy to follow, watching each one to complete.
You're very welcome!
I cannot upload the participant demographics excel sheet to the cases classification - it is grayed out. Please advise.
Make sure you close the excel spread sheet before uploading it into NVivo. Another option is to save the excel as '.xlsx' before uploading it.
@@drphilipaduI will try that. Thank you
@@drphilipadu Okay, thank you very much!!!
@@suigeneris5193 You're welcome!
How can I import the manually generated codes into the software to identify themes and verify if they align with my manual analysis?
NVivo doesn't have the option to import manually generated codes. You may need to manually create the codes in NVivo.
@@drphilipadu Thank you for your reply. Could you please suggest alternate websites/software where the manually coded excel sheets can be analyzed?
