You asked for it and it's here. The TOP 5 list of air-to-air weapons most used by DCS pilots.
Fox 1 means a semi-active radar missile was fired. This type requires the aircraft's radar to continue guiding the weapon until it hits the target. Fox1 missiles can be considered BVR combat missiles due to their great range. Examples of this type: AIM-7 Sparrow and R-27R.
Fox 2 indicates the firing of a heat/infrared (IR) missile. They depend on having a heat source nearby so that they can be guided, which is why they are basically used in close-range combat, within visual range (WVR). Their combination with the Helmet Display is excellent. Examples of this type of missile: AIM-9 Sidwinder, R-27ET, R-73 Archer, IRIS-T and MICA-IR.
Finally, Fox 3 are missiles with active radar. They don’t need the aircraft to guide them to the target, but only for a period of time, after which the missile's own radar begins to guide them. Nowadays it is the most used type of missile and is the main BVR armament of fighters. Examples of this missile: AIM-120 AMRAAM, R-77, AIM-54 Phoenix and SD-10.
