The Last Waltz was a perfect vehical to demonstate the natural and unique power of Neil Diamond's and Van Morrison's voices beyond what many were used to just coming out of their radios. Both of their performances leave anyone with the realization that these guys just had it, and had it in spades.
So I was at the Last Waltz and I gotta say, the audience was more than bewildered when Diamond took the stage. In fact this song fell flat, while the Winterland crowd just kinda talked through it. The audience's reaction on the film track was clearly 'juiced' . No slight to Diamond, whose songs pave our nostalgic radio waves, but it felt in the audience that night like an oversized sequined bull had come into a chinashop.

Neil Diamond was the greatest singer of the 79s & early 80s. The highest paid male singer in the world back then. I dont really think most men in the celebrity world or music world (except for ELVIS PRESLEY) are good looking, but Diamond was definately for me an outstanding good-looking guy & with that voice that is so, so different from anyone before him & anyone after him. ❤❤❤
My Mum loved Neil Diamond, I had this exact version played at her funeral, as loud as the minister let me, when the service was over and people were standing up to leave, it absolutely hit the spot, nobody left until it ended. I came here to send my daughter a link to it and it brought me right back to that day, love you Mum.
Not many of the other guys were to hyped about mr. Diamond and after he walked off he went to dylan and said, "you would have to be pretty good to fallow me." to which dylan said "what would I have to do, go out there and fall asleep?" many of the others didn't understand why he was there...i think he is great personally LOVE ON THE ROCKS!!
I was at that concert too, Aug 4, 2017... We were celebrating the 45th anniversary of the first time we saw him in concert at the Greek Theatre in 1972... That concert was 'Hot August Night'! Neil Diamond is the best singer/songwriter and performer of all time...
I didn't know what he was doing here either although I did like some of his stuff as I was still young! But when he did this song I was blown away! And ever since when I see this part of the film Dry You're Eyes...ironically makes me cry!❤😂
Right through the lightning and the thunder To the dark side of the moon To that distant falling angel That descended much too soon And come dry your eyes Darm angel
I was at a Beil Tribute Act, and the guy asked for requests. Everyone was surprised when I requested this classic sing, the guy doing the act actually thanked me for requesting it.
This is the one piece from that thing, that amazing event so long ago that can never occur again, that I will always watch, and hear, again, and again. Snotty Neil Young addressed him as Neil Sedaka, the others in the Band didn’t want him on the show, like everything always went for me and you in high school, but Robbie stood up for him, being the stand-up guy he’s always been, got him on the lineup, and Neil Diamond just blew out the lights, for me and for many others in the audience and ever after, the highlight of that stellar night.
Bullsh**! absolutely astute remark by Young ,failing only in that he was as improbable a guest there as Neil Sedaka - but lacked Sedaka's songwriting ability. The sole reason for him there, was to promote his work done with Robbie. I was at the Last Waltz, and the reaction in the crowd to him on stage was a downer moment, the worst moment of an incredibly long wonderful night. The crowd essentially ignored him, the film applause is not the real reaction, but 'juiced' after his Robbie Robertson credited song was done - mostly the crowd just talked thru his performance. not to say i didn't enjoy Diamonds radio play thru the years.
Funny, I am NOT much of a Neil Diamond fan, and I felt this performance belonged there. He belongs simply by virtue of the fact that they asked him to, as a tribute to his songwriting and his influence on The Band, which in turn is a tribute to the huge variety of music they supported. I love this movie, and this song is my third favorite here, after The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Caravan.
I totally understand the initial hesitation of some of the band members about Diamond playing that night but in the end they made the right decision. Diamond's performance brought a dramatic element to the film in his own way- not to mention just a down right fantastic song. One of the best parts of this film is the diversity of guest artists.
I’ve never understood this hesitation over Neil Diamond, I remember a time when it was considered quite cool to be into ND, well over here in the U.K. anyway...despite him hailing from Brooklyn he engrained himself within the west coast singer/songwriter set and he wrote some fabulous stuff, I’ve always held my head up and said....”Neil Diamond?...Yep, I’m a fan !”
Powerful tribute/healing song about the assassinations of JFK, MLK and RFK in the 60s. Diamond probably surprised many people in this audience but after i saw him perform at the Greek in 1972 ( Hot August Night) i'm not surprised at all.
+Tom B. Hot August Night is one of greatest sounding live albums ever recorded, Neil was at his Rockiest ever, My mother was and still is a Neil Phene, I really only liked his material from 68-72 the rest was IMHO too mellow for my tastes
+Tom B. many of us who saw him in the early 70s. knew how great and how popular he was..Many people i knew who went to Winterland that night told me "this guy comes out in shades, purple coat, looking like a lounge singer, who blew the place up." i say Neil Diamond and they go how do you know? These cats didn't realize Neil Diamond drew far more crowds than the Band did..not knocking 'em just saying..
Neil Diamond in 1976 was huge, Neil wrote songs for a lot of different artists. He is a incredible talent amazing songwriter and it was magic that he performed at the Last Waltz
Am a fan of all of the acts on Last Waltz, mostly of The Band. And while Neil didn't look like he'd "fit the bill", he showed his class by delivering a standout performance of a great, great song. Think he surprised a few in the audience that night.
It was good but he hardly ropped the djow apart !! Are yoi gorgetting van Morrison ? Ronnie hawkins and so many others it was a good but pretty average performance im comparison !!
Robbie understood the Tin Pan Alley roots of American music at its best and that Neil was a spectacular songwriter and bucked a lot of people to give us this 'pure' performance.
I remember watching this for the first time and thinking "Neil Diamond? what the fuck?" and then I was totally blown away by this performance and I've been a fan ever since.
@@lt.spears1889 I have the greatest respect for them. Clapton and Dylan are two of my musical idols. The point I waa trying to make was that Diamond was not considered worthy enough to be invited to participate. It was only because Robbie Robertson had worked closely with Diamond before, that he was invited. That's why Diamond's performance was so significant. He proved he belonged there and even more than that.
HERE ARE THE LYRICS..... Dry your eyes and take your song out, well it's a newborn afternoon. And if you can't recall the singer, you can still recall the tune. Dry your eyes and play it slowly just like you're marching off to war; Sing it like you always want it, like we sang it once before. And from the center of the circle to the midst of the waiting crowd, If it ever be forgotten sing it long and sing it loud and come dry your eyes. And he taught us more about living than we ever cared to know, But we came to learn the secret and we never let it go. And it was more than being holy and it was less than being free, And if you can't recall the reason can you hear the people sing. Right through the lightning and the thunder to the dark side of the moon, To that distant falling angel that descended much too soon Come dry your eyes. Dry your eyes, take your song out, it's a newborn afternoon. And if you can't recall the singer you can still recall the tune. Come dry your eyes, Come dry your eyes, Dry your eyes. Songwriters: DIAMOND, NEIL / ROBERTSON, JAIME ROBBIE
Don't insult Elvis. He may not have written his songs, but he was the greatest performer ever.He broke down the door to Rock'n'Roll, broke attendance records everywhere he went and could sing any type of music he wanted to.Check out Suspicious Minds from 1970 or If I Can Dream from '68 Comeback Special.
There were two Elvis's. The brilliant young rock and roller who changed music and the sad drugged crooner of later years. When Elvis sand My Way we all knew the rock star was gone.
I've read that Robertson was the only one in favor of having Neil play that night. It's understandable from the perspective of the nitty gritty songsmiths that were playing that night (Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and the rest of The Band). While Neil had massive hits in the late sixties and early seventies before taking 4 years off from music altogether, he came back from his hiatus with sold out, multi-night stands in Vegas and elsewhere. His longing for solitude and time with his family created a hunger from his fans that ended up making him appear to be more of a Wayne Newton type performer with sequined shirts and nightclub shows. It's easy to forget that he struggled as a studio songwriter for several years before finally creating anything that anyone wanted to hear him sing. He represented glamor and extravagance at a performance-The Last Waltz-where the others were loving their representation of their continuous grind. Diamond was a radio superstar and pop cultural celebrity at the time. Although, after reading about him, he didn't necessarily enjoy. He was trapped in an imbalance of wanting to keep making money from music while being left alone while having friends while not being bothered. He had struggles as heard on "Solitary Man" and "I Am...I Said." Robertson had just produced Neil's comeback solo album "Beautiful Noise," and he believed in Neil Diamond as a person and connected with him as a songwriter. The other preformers didn't give him a chance because they were distracted by the celebrity if Neil rather than understanding that he struggled with being an incredible songwriter just like they did. Neil Diamond on song writing He loathed writing songs he once said: ‘I hate it. But all right, nobody told me it was gonna be easy,’ he added. ‘I’m a ditch-digger when I’m writing songs. My back hurts? Who cares? I gotta get that ditch dug deep and strong and it’s gotta serve its purpose. There are no short cuts.’ Neil chose to limit his "Last Waltz" exposure to just one song because he so respected the others performing. Neil Diamond never played "Come Dry Your Eyes" live again after this performance. He chose to play this one specifically for the audience there. He didn't blast out any other of his major hits. He ."took a total class backseat to those who came before him. Say what you will, but Bill Murray said it best in What About Bob, "There are two types of people in this world: those who love Neil Diamond and those who don't"
Takes me back my youth and the marches for peace and Martin Luther King. One of the greatest songs about that time. We really did come to know the secret and never let it go.
I’ve loved Neil since the mid sixties when I was a teenager, ever since Solitary Man. I lived near the Greek Theatre, couldn’t afford to the go inside but we would listen sitting in the hills behind the Greek - Hot August Night. I had most of his albums. When I was in college in the early seventies my roommates would make fun of me for being a big fan. I had never heard or seen The Last Waltz until a few weeks ago (May 2022). I only watched it because, to my surprise, Neil Diamond performed on it. What a great song and performance - pure class - far better in my opinion than Neil Young and Bob Dylan.

An absolute all time great right there!!
most of the audience thought my mom and dad like this square but he won them over with his heartfelt performance a true legend in my eyes
He got a bit schmaltzy in the 80s this was a decade earlier
My Mum loved Neil Diamond, I had this exact version played at her funeral, as loud as the minister let me, when the service was over and people were standing up to leave, it absolutely hit the spot, nobody left until it ended.
I came here to send my daughter a link to it and it brought me right back to that day, love you Mum.
perfect music to send your mom away. bless her!
My Mum loved Neil too. We took her to a great concert of his in Hartford, CT he touched her arm & smiled. She was in her element. ❤❤❤
When he walked to the stage. Yes, back in the early 90s that was possible for someone like Diamond to walk upto the stage.
One of the greatest songwriters of the rock era.
Not many of the other guys were to hyped about mr. Diamond and after he walked off he went to dylan and said, "you would have to be pretty good to fallow me." to which dylan said "what would I have to do, go out there and fall asleep?" many of the others didn't understand why he was there...i think he is great personally LOVE ON THE ROCKS!!
took my daughter to Phoenix show this past August. She was totally blown away by Dry Your Eyes!
I was at that concert too, Aug 4, 2017... We were celebrating the 45th anniversary of the first time we saw him in concert at the Greek Theatre in 1972... That concert was 'Hot August Night'! Neil Diamond is the best singer/songwriter and performer of all time...
Chills....every time I come watch this.
yep Diamond could do that, like elvis on his aphetamine stoked 1968 return, chilling
This was a high point of the night.
I didn't know what he was doing here either although I did like some of his stuff as I was still young! But when he did this song I was blown away! And ever since when I see this part of the film Dry You're Eyes...ironically makes me cry!❤😂
Right through the lightning and the thunder
To the dark side of the moon
To that distant falling angel
That descended much too soon
And come dry your eyes
Darm angel
The most elegant and brilliant of the concert
this is one of the stand out performances from a truly great rock film
i think personally it is the best..but you are right..
I was at a Beil Tribute Act, and the guy asked for requests. Everyone was surprised when I requested this classic sing, the guy doing the act actually thanked me for requesting it.
Neil was supreme above the rest. Neil Diamond featuring the Last Waltz Band!
The Diamond is massively underrated.
Love that you simply call him the Diamond 💎♥️💯
Neil Diamond used to write good songs in the 1960's and early 1970's. He no longer does so.
He did a good acoustic album back in 2005 called "12 Songs". Well worth a listen.
@@ndhan72 Diamonds are forever.
DIAMOND was the BEST. ELVIS was the best for his particular time. ❤❤❤
His Traveling Salvation Show continues....bless you Neil
I love this movie and to watch this song in particular. Neil posesses such stage presence; and a lady slayer from waaay back.
I am only going to sing one song, but I am going to sing it good!!!
He sang the heck out of that tune!
That's a good piece of writing, well said.
Bullsh**!
absolutely astute remark by Young ,failing only in that he was as improbable a guest there as Neil Sedaka - but lacked Sedaka's songwriting ability.
Diamond was never going to anyone but himself singing this great self penned song.
What about Stagefright?
I totally understand the initial hesitation of some of the band members about Diamond playing that night but in the end they made the right decision. Diamond's performance brought a dramatic element to the film in his own way- not to mention just a down right fantastic song. One of the best parts of this film is the diversity of guest artists.
holly russo Not to mention A NEW YORKER...
Jon Alan “
I’ve never understood this hesitation over Neil Diamond, I remember a time when it was considered quite cool to be into ND, well over here in the U.K. anyway...despite him hailing from Brooklyn he engrained himself within the west coast singer/songwriter set and he wrote some fabulous stuff, I’ve always held my head up and said....”Neil Diamond?...Yep, I’m a fan !”
Stunning. So much for us The Band "sophisticates".
+dbd1353 I'll say what you wont...I would to this day attend a Neil Diamond show, I wouldnt cross the street to see The Band.
You saw him in concert at the Greek Theatre in 1972? Was it a good concert?
Phene?
Neil Diamond in 1976 was huge, Neil wrote songs for a lot of different artists. He is a incredible talent amazing songwriter and it was magic that he performed at the Last Waltz
Said it before and I'll say it again. This song takes me right back to the 60's and peace marches and the turmoil of the era...
Most underrated song writer
....this makes a poet out of this precious one...like it or not...poets live forever....hugs for the post....
Am a fan of all of the acts on Last Waltz, mostly of The Band. And while Neil didn't look like he'd "fit the bill", he showed his class by delivering a standout performance of a great, great song. Think he surprised a few in the audience that night.
I was there.
And, no, he did not!
Neil Diamond is the greatest. No one can attest to Him What an unsung Legend Indeed
Look as even "the band " looked on in apprehensive amazement !!
Both neil's were great that night. Always comeback to listen to this great song.
Without a doubt the best performance of the show
- his voice strong and clear.
Not even close. Bob Dylan and Van Morrison were better.
@@metalguru5226 OH HUSH
@@dannyjamesband It's true.
@@metalguru5226 is it true . lol T Rex is not in the RR Hall of Shame.
Awesome song awesome performer Im suprised at Levon Helm
Hes was a rockstar this night. He bought it strong.
I saw him in 1970 as a college freshman and have been a fan since then. This is not surprising at all. He did a great job.
i always liked his songs coming up in the 60s and saw him live in '72, and he put on one of the best shows i've seen..
Absolutely Amazing
stadium is packed
he comes out in this purple jacket - people are buzzing - who is this? - then he rips the place apart
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
i always thought he was the best part of the film..
dbd1353 and also Neil Young singing "Helpless", The Band singing "It makes no difference" and Bob Dylan " Babe can I follow you down?"
It was good but he hardly ropped the djow apart !! Are yoi gorgetting van Morrison ? Ronnie hawkins and so many others it was a good but pretty average performance im comparison !!
He's in the line up because he's a legend like the rest of them 🎤🎸🎹🎶
Excellent neil
Neil absolutely smashed it out of the park…..Highlight of the Gig…
Robbie understood the Tin Pan Alley roots of American music at its best and that Neil was a spectacular songwriter and bucked a lot of people to give us this 'pure' performance.
Beautiful song. Neil is great.
I have the album The Last Waltz, the cd, the dvd, and I am watching again here In 2023. The Band, the best band i hearded.
Look at those shades. Neil Diamond was and still is one smooth cat.
this one is a highlight on the last waltz. i have been hearing this record being played a lot lately in pubs for some reason but i ant complaining.
Neil Diamond's best song, in my mind.
Neil Diamond+The Band
=
AWESOME!!!!!!
The Diamond! enough said ✌️❤️🎶
♥️💎
I remember watching this for the first time and thinking "Neil Diamond? what the fuck?" and then I was totally blown away by this performance and I've been a fan ever since.
Eres un espectáculo verte, no habrá ninguno como tú, no te olvidaremos ❤❤❤
Neil just blew this amazing group of talented people out of the water with his performance of this masterpiece …….incredible!!!!!!!!
and every woman in the Winterland Ballroom out of their panties. that low growl is something else.
They don't write them like this anymore. Diamond peaked in this magical performance. Way to rock!
He was the defining moment of the entire show. He showed them how it's done. A genius and so underrated.
You realize those guys that need to be showed how it’s done are considered Rock royalty
He proved he belonged there and even more than that.
love this since i was kid ... its makin a full circle now .... its only goin to get worse ... i hope we will be able to dry our eyes .....
Damn that's good!
"Almost" : ) reason enough alone to see "The Last Waltz". A Masterpiece from a Legend. A moment in time that is etched forever in my mind .
oh come on, Wayne Newton at 'Wouldstock' practise your guitar more.
HERE ARE THE LYRICS.....
Dry your eyes and take your song out, well it's a newborn afternoon.
And if you can't recall the singer, you can still recall the tune.
Dry your eyes and play it slowly just like you're marching off to war;
Sing it like you always want it, like we sang it once before.
And from the center of the circle to the midst of the waiting crowd,
If it ever be forgotten sing it long and sing it loud and come dry your eyes.
And he taught us more about living than we ever cared to know,
But we came to learn the secret and we never let it go.
And it was more than being holy and it was less than being free,
And if you can't recall the reason can you hear the people sing.
Right through the lightning and the thunder to the dark side of the moon,
To that distant falling angel that descended much too soon
Come dry your eyes.
Dry your eyes, take your song out, it's a newborn afternoon.
And if you can't recall the singer you can still recall the tune.
Come dry your eyes,
Come dry your eyes,
Dry your eyes.
Songwriters: DIAMOND, NEIL / ROBERTSON, JAIME ROBBIE
WKL2 !
Thanks!
Great performance by Neil.
neil reminds me so much of elvis. he had that same charisma.
Wow I didn't realize what a great song This Is by Neil Diamond and the band I haven't seen the last wizard on TV in a while
Don't insult Elvis.
I agree. I divide Elvis' career as before and after his mom passing. The Colonel didn't help matters by pimping him out to the movie studios.
He had struggles as heard on "Solitary Man" and "I Am...I Said."
Robertson had just produced Neil's comeback solo album "Beautiful Noise," and he believed in Neil Diamond as a person and connected with him as a songwriter. The other preformers didn't give him a chance because they were distracted by the celebrity if Neil rather than understanding that he struggled with being an incredible songwriter just like they did.
Neil Diamond on song writing
He loathed writing songs he once said: ‘I hate it. But all right, nobody told me it was gonna be easy,’ he added. ‘I’m a ditch-digger when I’m writing songs. My back hurts? Who cares? I gotta get that ditch dug deep and strong and it’s gotta serve its purpose. There are no short cuts.’
Neil chose to limit his "Last Waltz" exposure to just one song because he so respected the others performing.
Amazing song, Neil Is Magic❤️
Takes me back my youth and the marches for peace and Martin Luther King. One of the greatest songs about that time. We really did come to know the secret and never let it go.
Every generation learns a secret, and most do let it go... But those who don’t change the world..
Well done Neil
Thanks I needed that. I lost a good friend tonight. I'll always love Neil. 58/fav. Thanks you made my night. Peace to you and yours. M.O.M.
Beautiful!
Powerful Neil Diamond who made me want to play the guitar and sing just like him Forever Diamond or Diamond is God
That whole movie The Last Waltz is excellent
Fabulous lyrics! The Band !!!!! what else could we call you guys !?!
Who doesn't love a good power anthem.
Anchorman sang very well. Great work Ron.
Love it ! If not the best concert ever the second for sure
Justin Shively love this... Neil was allowed to play with men!!! and owned it like a Boss
