  • The future is here, and you can scan objects into your computer for under $1000, but before you spend your money on a scanner, know which one to choose!
    We are comparing the creality cr-scan lizard vs the revopoint mini, both of which are the newest 3d scanners aimed at hobbyists on the market! (these are the successors to the revopoint pop2 and the cr-scan 01)
    Its a close battle for the title of best scanner, but who will win?

    Thanks for the comparison, I backed rhe mini without looking into revopoint enough and didn't know the flaws in the software. It's been a serious struggle and it doesn't seem like they're overly interested in fixing it at this point.. I even suggested a subscription for updates kind of model which I'm dead set against generally, but I think they just deleted my comments..

    Great review bud, perfectly shows that each scanner has its own advantages and compromises.
    You might wanna try CR studio.2022.5.19.0020 software, it’s the older style and whilst not quite as stable gives more options on output and processing than the newer software and gives me much better accuracy than you got.

      Hey, sorry - your comment got held up in the youtube review queue, first off - thanks for checking the video out. I watch your channel a fair bit, so cool to see you here! your video on how to do the cross section planes with the intersect lines on a mesh for reverse engineering seriously changed my design workflow when dealing with 3d scans!
      I have 2022.5.19 installed, i might have referred to it in the video as cr studio lite, idk if that anegdote made it into the final video. I used to use it almost exclusively, but i found the newer versions of the modern ui software to be stable enough now, though i prefer the layout of 2022.5.19. I don't think i tried comparing the accuracy on the 40mm cube between the software, so ill give that a go after the holiday madness dies down!

    Fantastic video, thanks for the comparison. I got the kickstarter Lizard, intending to use for reverse engineering car parts. I have been really wanting a revo mini to try out, the scans look so promising! But had heard the software was kinda crap. I much appreciate a view into revoscan and the workflow, it looks frustrating compared to CRscan, especially with the lack of pointcloud editing. I will say it's a heck of a learning curve to getting good scans, trying to appease bothe the scanner and the software.
    Again, thank you for the insightful video, my wants for the MINI have been curbed a bit.

    Unfortunately I ended up sending back my Revo Mini. It just failed scanning too many times for me. It would lose tracking around 90% before finished. The RevoStudio was good software. It failed scanning flat white objects, Disney Infinity Characters, controller faceplate. The tracking dots on the dual axis turntable were useless. Almost every scan with the marker stickers failed. Having bought the revopoint pop 1 last year, having them come out with the pop 2 a couple of weeks after getting the 1 and then having the scanner be a total shitshow as far as tracking, not liking anything black, and having multiple hours of frustration dealing with the softwares lack of use in fusing images and being total garbage makes me never considering anything revopoint ever again. For what these cost and having seen a review of the the Shining 3D Einstar the other day in which the scan is fantastic without any of the issues during the scan or using the software in which the user start to finish took about 30 minutes to get done compared with the hours of frustration, between these two and the Einstar the clear winner is the Einstar. I'm torn on this because I backed the mini as I plan on using it to scan stuff for cars, and so far it works for the things I have scanned. However just like many scanners including some really expensive scanners like the Artec Eva has trouble with darker objects, The Artec only has trouble with glossy/ black (just add trackers not a great scan but usable) from my experience where as the scanners made more for hobbyists tend to have trouble with dark objects in general, trackers or not. I really hope the Scanner tech will get better so that the price difference can shrink just like the FDM Printers and Resin Printers have (Cost about the same now). As for the revopoint Mini, I backed the premium package which comes with a stabilizer that has yet to ship and is still in the testing phase so it sounds like they are working diligently on the freehand scanning right now I'm curious as to how much the natural human shaking while moving is causing the scanner to loose track and go crazy. I have seen some people actually scan some rather large things with it so it may be in how you prep things use more dots and odd shaped stickers and the scanning spray helps a ton. great video though.

    • @MethodicalMaker
      @MethodicalMaker  Рік тому

      Thanks! and yeah, the footage of me hand scanning is all very sped up (like 300%+ iirc depending on the shot). In person, i was trying to be VERY stable with it... it was a lot easier with the phone setup though, as my PC was off to the left of where i was scanning. looking at a screen in line with your scan target is much better than off to the side at a screen.
      as for the mini vs the lizard, the lizard setup was way more unruly - It has that power/data split cable, which meant that one side was going over to a power strip, and the usb side over to my PC... with the scanner almost equidistant from both making a triangle. This made it a lot harder to scan than the mini, and even with that complication it did a MUCH better job.
      I also am hoping the gimbal and spray will make a difference, but im fully confident the issue is primarily in the software right now. As for the dark objects, I have had some mixed results. I scanned some coffee stuff as well as a pepper grinder (both to make custom 3d printed stands) and those worked fine on the mini... I just don't think it could do light+dark in one scan. You would probably need 2 or 3 at different exposures, and then manually align them.

    • @TG-gh2su
      @TG-gh2su Рік тому

      @@MethodicalMaker I just had a thought, given the Mini's size and how close you need to be to the object when scanning, maybe adding more dots to the object will help it track better. Made a post on Revopoint forum with linking in your video (the part you made a try free hand scan of the vise) along with the other videos, where people complain about Revopoint tracking. These are the only two i have used. The inaccuracies are not consistent, but you can do things like use 3d scanning spray to get the error margin smaller. Also, while both do have their shortcomings, its incredible that 3d scanners are attainable to the hobbyist, as just a handful of years ago, 3d scanning was something you had to DIY, or spend 5000+ usd to get.
      They aren't perfect, but if you do a lot of 3d modeling / functional 3d printing where you don't have cad files to start from, having an impercise scanner will get the basic geometry captured, and you can re-create the part in cad with a pair of calipers A LOT quicker than doing it from scratch (especially when dealing with compound curves and hard to measure angles)

It does what it was designed for at a great price. The scan quality is on par with 12K scanners. It takes lots of practice to learn how to get the best results. Fixtures, scanning spray, repeatable scanning environment (dark), markers, and jigs help a lot to get repeatable quality and accuracy. If all this is to much hassle, just buy a EinScan HX. Great scanner for what it does. Faster and easier. Just keep in mind. There is not one scanner that does it all. Most professionals have 2 to 3 scanners to cover their needs.
      Try to keep 5 to 6 markers in frame when scanning items like the vice. Adding more around the object will allow you to to rotate and transition better. I know it's more setup time, but everyone needs to determine is the extra time justified. Cleaner scan means less post processing. Sometimes I'll just CAD the part out if it's faster. I hope this information helps someone.

      The thing is the MINI is build to scan 50x50mm objects and the lizard for bigger parts. I would say use both.

    Sorry mate , but ASC is a fact standard in pointclouds, I just export the pointcloud just fine and is filtered and meshed up with almost every software. Not sure your point there, just your comment doesn't fit to the real thing.
    You cannot remove point by the not included color kit as something negative, as you didn't included the scanners price either, so,.the Mini got the colour thing but the scanner is almost twice the price. By much less of that you get the colour kit, is positive can choose, in the mini you pay for it yes or yes. So just don't compare that part.
    Other think I don't understand how you can valuate by the same value , 1, a thing as desing, or color kit, more when you didn't buy the colour kit, than fail in the main task of a scan, the scanning, for me cannot scan in hand held mode when it advice it, it is not only that should penalty 2 or 3 points, I just would call it a scam and the company should recall the product and they know it doesn't fit to purpose and still sold it, because for sure they tested it better than you, knew it didn't work and still sold it.and advertised it, lamentable a company do that
