The pump is definitely a strong possibility, it is the most common cause of leaks on this style of washer. The second most common is the rear tub spring rusting through the frame and allowing the tub to sit forward. When the washer fills with water some splashes down the back of the tub. Best to pull the cabinet off, jump the lid switch (use caution) run it and watch for where the leak is coming from. Good luck!

That's exactly what happened to mine, Child's sock, only it was not coming back out of the pump except as tattered shreds. We can purchase the pump locally, I just hope the motor didn't burn out.
The motor did not burn out, it drained just fine after replacing the pump. I tried to clear it but that sock wasn't coming out.

my pump is fused to the motor and you can see the rust where it connects to the motor shaft. there is about two ounces of water on the floor after every wash. does that mean my pump is done or do i just take of the pump and clean that area where the rust is?

This video is great. I got the bad pump off, but now I cannot get the new pump on. It will not go further than about a quarter inch no matter how hard I push. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Is the motor shaft rusted? If the pump was leaking onto the motor shaft, it may be swollen with rust. If that's the case you may need to sand on it for a while to get back down to clean metal and its original size so the new pump will work... If it's not rusty, What is your washer model number? what is your new pump part number? And I will check for more clues.

applianceassistant Thanks for the quick reply. The pump was leaking onto the shaft and it is discolored. I have used a wire brush on it to get the rust off. So it looks clean. Should I go after it with a dremel?

David Widman Keep forgetting. It's kenmore series 60 washer. The part number for the pump matches the part number of the one I removed. It was very difficult to get the old one off, by the way.

If you think we are on to the track with the cause, then I would say yes. Rust it pretty amazing. Just be careful not to take too much, motors are expensive. Good luck!

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with that washer apart from replacing the clutch and tub sensor. Might be worth calling a repair person for... especially if you can get a good price on the tub through ebay or something like that. Sorry I could not be of more help. Good luck!

i am trying to learn how to work on washers here: at 4:23 i am to use pliers to hit a screwdriver to remove a stuck drain pump ok ???

It has worked for me, and one less tool I need to carry in my tool bag. This type of washer is going to be pretty rare these days. I’ve had a few that I had to chisel off one piece at a time if the pump was leaking and caused the motor shaft to swell with rust.

@@johncasor9698 Really. Whirlpool stopped making them over 13 years ago,,,, on average they would last about 18-25 years so they are dwindling in numbers. compared with the new 6-10 year life span washers, these are rare.

The water going right out of the tub is probably due to the bottom of the drain hose being below the water level in the tub. It needs to be at least as high as the top of the washer. Apart from that it sounds like the drain pump may not be working to push the water out at the end of the cycle... I could not find your washer diagrams with that number... I'm guessing it's a Samsung?
