- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at a series of games from the 2K franchise such as WWE 2K and NBA 2K which have sat under the headlines for quite some time. With online services lasting less than 2 years and systems that should have it receive the highest ESRB rating imaginable, just how hasn't the government started looking into this and shutting down some of their awful practices? The funniest thing about 2K especially NBA 2K? The career mode is attached to online so after the servers get pulled or whenever they're not available you can't even play an offline career mode. And then even more damning, the older 2K modes gave you the ability to convert your save to an offline one permanently but that option conveniently no longer exists.
So they're essentially useless coasters by that point?

I don't play 2K games at all and I never will but I find it strange that they'd do that since it's free money if you let people buy it.

It should be legal that when a company shuts down servers they've automatically forfeited rights to that game's online service and can't go after anyone who decides to create and keep up private servers.
It should go beyond that. They should be legally required to provide server docs for every public version (as well as access to every public version of every game that has ever been updated for every platform on which it appears) so anyone can do it, as well as access to a copy of your purchases so you can easily restore them on your private server.

@@BozesanVlad Did you miss the purchases part of his point, Purchases ≠ Free. Also you still have to buy the game they are basically saying if you forgo having servers they should have laws in place to force developers to fork over how the servers are operated and tools to make them are selves.
And I 100% agree it lets games past there experiation still remain playable if your willing to get a bit tech savvy.

@@videogamerNattie98 It's pretty much what id software used to do. After a set number of years they'd release the source code to their games. This is the reason why Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are playable on just about anything.
EA and Activision may have caused the most damage to the gaming industry, but 2K wins the award of being the most shameless.
I'd say anyone releasing annual games is equally responsible in the damage done to the industry. There's a reason why the industry norm for a development cycle is 3 years and it's quality. If your constantly shitting out games your not only exhausting your workforce you are also not able to change the game from it's predecessor in any major way. I pray for the day where consumers smarten up and stop buying the same garbage yearly.

@@Sursion Dude, just because I didn't mention them in my anecdotal comment doesn't mean I was giving them a free pass. But I would argue that EA and Activision "BLIZZARD" have done the most damage. Ubisoft ruined open-world gaming, but it pales in comparison to what the other two giants have done.
The worst thing about the sports franchises is that they actually affect other gaming genre's. They're the reason EA can buyout and ruin other franchises without it affecting them at all.
Exactly, iirc NBA 2K is one of, if not the first game to put a 70$ price tag for current gen, and look at where we are now.

And NBA 2K. I put 900 hours into 2K17 and 1400 hours into 2K19. Those are my two favorite games in the series and i literally cannot play them anymore because the servers are just gone

It's insane to me that people actually buy a new game every year when the only change is usually just the number on the box.
Sport games "gamers" are the most casual gamers out there, they buy like 2 games a year anyway(second is new COD :D) so they don't really care.

As someone who recently bought WWE 2K23, this scares me. I'm not a huge wrestling fan but I got the itch recently and got my first taste of a 2K era WWE game as the last one I played was SvR 2009. I honestly really like 2K23 and as someone who plays offline, I planned on sticking with this one for at least a few years till they release a new one with upgrades worthy of a purchase. Now I'm worried the game I purchased only a few months back is gonna be taken away from me next year.
don't worry, just download all the community creations you can before the servers go down, they will not be taking away all the stuff you have already downloaded. They will just be removing the Community Creation space where you download new ones.
@@Fujiisamaa 2K23 at least on PC sometimes can lose some CC content. If that problem isn’t resolved before they closed the servers we’d be serious trouble there.
As @Fujiisamaa has already stated, if you play WWE 2K23 offline exclusively you should be ok, only community creations and MyFaction will be effected. WWE 2K23 isn't too bad on the micro transactions yet. Disc or code locked content to MyFaction is another story in of itself, but the meat and potatoes of the game will still be there. This is a gamer reacting in a space and to a game he hasn't done his full research on.
For starters unlike the assertion made in this video.....WWE 2K (finally) has competition in AEW Fight Forever, is it perfect? No. Is it anywhere close to the quality of WWE 2K23? Not yet, is it building itself up akin to how NBA 2K built against Live? Absolutely it'd be a fool not to. Does it have WWE 2K Panicked? We'll see, but there was a big push from WWE for certain modes to see improvements because of it so hey....that's great we need more competition in the sports game scene these days, competition drives innovation.
Please don't buy into the comparison in this video between WWE2K and NBA 2K....at least for preservation purposes, WWE at least on consoles, doesn't (yet) have a single player mode dependent on an online server and has abundant couch co-op multiplayer modes that also aren't reliant on a server. They will still work and in the particular case of MyGM be amazing to play so long as you have a working system for them.
Bias aside however, yeah.....extremely disturbing trend especially for 2K, Visual Concepts and Take Two, I've been playing NBA 2K for a while and the WWE Games for over 20 years, knowing Visual Concepts and 2K however you could see something like that coming soon so keep an eye out for it especially if you intend to keep your game beyond a 12-24 month cycle. The pack opening systems of MyTeam and MyFaction are grade A BS designed to suckle the teet of every loyal gamer until you get the one wrestler, or one Pink Diamond Michael Jordan card that is shamelessly locked away from online play in the most popular mode of your game and should have some more stringent regulation akin to the EA/Star Wars fiasco of the 2010s, and that if you pay for a game online or not it should have the ability to function (either officially or through fan support) for a much longer lifecycle than 24 months. The source code for online servers for legacy sports titles should be made available to fans.
In your case though, I wouldn't worry WWE 2K23 is great and will continue to be great (offline) for years to come.

In the EU there is a law that gives a legal guarantee of a minimum 2 years for most hardware, electrical equipment etc. We need a similar law for software services for a minimum of 5 years.
same with android phone updates. A lot of cheap, chinese phone manufacturers, like Xiaomi or modern post-IBM Lenovo ship some of their phones and cheap tablets with outdated security patches or even pre-installed malware, Outdated software from the factory.
Or even worse: manipulate and delay them. If i buy a laptop with windows, i want my updates to come from MS directly. Same if i buy a phone with android, updates have to come from Google directly and without artificial delay.
Usually a game is not a fundamental right, but yes, if you bought something you should be able to use it.

Australia has something similar and if enough complaints are filed against the company that made the hardware/software then the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) can drag that company over hot coals about the issue and go so far as to point blank say "You don't do this, this and that then there's the fucking door, don't let it hit you on ass on the way out" and actually bar them from operating ANY service in Australia until they comply and as to what it would fall under in regards to the ACCC? It would fall under their thing about goods/services that an Australian consumer purchased loosing access to X part of the goods/services they paid money to use.

One day, the servers will be offline. It's inevitable. Thats why always online sucks. When pay day 4 drops you can bet they'll shut them down, and everything you paid for will be gone. When you buy something in a live service always online product, you might as well just call it renting, because it's not yours. They just let you pay money to hold onto it for a bit, until they see fit to delete everything.

@@KimyonaKyandilol. Maybe, but people are quick to forget about botched launches as long as the devs fix it. Cyberpunk, no man's sky, and fo76 come to mind. All 3 of those games saw great success after the devs fixed them up. It's why so many games come out bad, because the mentality has become "we'll fix it later and everyone will forgive us".

I believe if you sell a game that requires you to connect to servers for *any* feature, you should be required to publish a minimum timefraome that you're required to keep the servers up for - and put that on the box (or the digital storefront)

That has nothing to do with 2K. Since its inception, sports gamers update every year to have current rosters, that is typically the appeal of these games.
What could change however is turning these games into a real live service where instead of wasting 60 yearly, it should be an overhaul update yearly. They already make a ton of money through MTX so this shouldn't be a problem.

The funny thing is, I actually used to be a huge sports games fan. I would buy each title yearly, Madden, Fifa, 2K and to this day I love me some Forza. However, I stopped playing all of the major sports titles around 2017. It started with Madden and eventually Fifa and 2k as well. I saw this coming from a mile away (big thanks to Angry Joe) and I backed out super early. I honestly feel sorry for the fans that didn't get to experience the good old days.

Holy shit he actually covered it! i recently saw a reddit post where some guy said that 2K22 is gonna end support in January for online creations and i was so bummed, i couldn't believe it because it's so new, i also happen to like 2K22's gameplay more than 2K23, yes it's very similar but there are differences that are noticable if you have 300 hours like i do, thanks for covering this Mutahar and hopefully they will rethink their choices..
Personally I think when a game's servers get shut down, the code should be released to the community to make it's own servers. This actually used to be a thing back in the day, at least on PC, just download the dedicated server software and run it off your own PC! Some games even let you host and play with the same machine.

Idk why people are surprised, every WWE title gets two years and then dies. 2K19 was the only exception because 2K20 was so bad they had to give 19 an extra year of support cause so many people were still playing it. There was no 2K21 because they needed so much time to make sure 22 was polished.
That’s the thing, no one in the community is surprised. It’s the people outside looking in that are. Nba2k has been shut down every second year for as long as I can remember and wwe is no different. But other communities don’t get that cause they don’t have to deal with it. Only sports gamers do.

THIS IS WHY I go on the hunt for indie sport games such as Mutant Football League, Maximum Football, Legend Bowl, etc. Etc. Most of these games are still as relevant today as it was when it was first released. Also, these developers care more for their products than the AAA counterpart.

Unfortunately, it's pretty normal for WWE games. WWE 2k18 for instance, was released on October 17th 2017 and servers were closed on May 31st 2019. So, less than two years as well.
Only 2k19 (released in 2018) lasted a while longer and this game's servers were shut down in June last year, because 2k20 was infamously a horrible mess of a game.
I can't imagine being a sports console gamer in this economy, if this is how things are going to go. Let's hope people wake up to where this could wind up leading.

In GTA's defense, They ran the server for 10 years. But the counterpoint to that is it's mostly peer to peer anyways! They aren't even running most of it!
As someone who actively plays the WWE video games, I can say that the Online capabilities are not the main selling point of the game. I would even argue that it isn’t one of the top 5 most played game modes in the game. The normal play now, myrise (essentially career mode), universe, showcase, and MyGM are definitely the biggest draws to the game. While it is annoying that the community creations gets taken down with the servers, the draw of the new games isn’t just so you can play online again. It’s to play the new career mode, or the new showcase, or as the new characters. Yes it is annoying to buy a new game for $60-$70 every year, but games like NBA 2K or Madden I feel like are more egregious examples of this. All they do is update the roster and call it a day. Once every 5 years we MIGHT get a new historic team or they MIGHT fix that game breaking bug in the one mode that you like.

In all honesty, games with an online component should have a self-hosting ability at the end of their life cycle. This means that when they decide to shut down the servers, they should release a final update that disables access to their server. However, you can use your own hardware or console as the server, just like old classic games like Minecraft, where you can host your own server and invite people to join. This way, you can continue playing the game, and in the worst-case scenario, they could make it a one-time fee for the end-of-life patch. It might not be ideal, but at least you'd still be able to play with your friends.

@PolyTriTix they've done with other games, and even on PC for example, many games which were once online only were preserved and a kit to create a custom library of textures and assets and subsequently a localized version of the game

NBA 2k and wwe 2k are some of the worst offenders of robbing gamers blind, but Daquan and LaTayvion line up every year to buy a 70 dollar roster update combined with 100 dollars of VC because you can’t compete online without buying vc.
WWE '12's servers were up for absolute AGES. Game released in 2011 and I don't think it was shut down until maybe 2 years ago. At least, that's the last time I checked it.
I think this is more of a publisher issue tied to the market expectations than a “developer” issue. I’ve seen interviews with people who work on these kind of games and they do seem to care about what they are putting out, but they are also on yearly schedules and expected to be cash cows.

Yes, It hurts to see Mutahar and other respected creators using the term developer so loosely when it comes to critiquing the obviously bad leadership overseeing these modern triple A titles. It seems like things can never improve in the industry as long as these studio execs and game publishers face no accountability for their incompetence while the developers take all the blame time and time again

There are so many reasons for that though. You are right that Bobby isn't physically standing there and directing every developer to make bad games but the decisions management makes have a ripple effect. When a full-time dev is hired, it realistically takes a full year before they are efficient at their jobs. Senior development is there to teach, guide and make sure things are good. BUT when you look into the AAA gaming industry, especially Activision Blizzard you can see how that is not the case. So many of the senior level developers have left, leaving a large knowledge gap. Then there is the constant cycling of temp workers and contractors which makes the knowledge gap larger. Then there is employee morale which affects the quality of work, and Activision Blizzard doesn't have a very good track record in keeping that high.
Lastly, You get what you pay for; When a company pays below industry standard and offers fewer benefits for working there then you're not going to get quality employees, those who have talent will look elsewhere. @@asain3586
I personally think multi-versus is one of those game that should be looked at like this. spend $60 for the full game thinking it’s early Access then for the game to shut down the servers

NBA 2K games are full-price games with some of the most horrid gacha mechanics in the history of gaming, and your progress is rendered pointless with each successive release which is also full price and has you start all over.
My brother in law still plays socom on his ps3 in online matches.
That game is 2008-2014 when official servers went down, 8 years official and it's still being played on private servers, 15 years for one game, and modern games EA games don't even last one year now.
This is why I only have 3 sports game. NBA Courtside 2 for N64, WWF No Mercy for N64, and NFL Madden '06. That's all I need. And no online requirement.
Just reminds me of how predatory Call of Duty is. Ever since Black Ops 2 they’ve had “COD Tokens” or “COD Coins” and for whatever damn reason, they don’t let you take your currency from one game into the next, even if they have the exact same infrastructure.
Live service games could be incredible, instead they’re just exploitative and predatory.
Not a CoD defender, but 1) CoD points (in their paid form, they were a free currency in bo1) were introduced in Black Ops 3, The CoD wiki says they've always been transferrable since bo3 and Cod4 Remastered, but I can't verify this. I do know that CoD points from mw2019 onwards do carry over.) Despite mw2019/BOCW/Vanguard's mtx being completely cosmetic, mw22 has some skins offer small but noticeable gameplay boosts for DMZ, the extraction shooter mode. Definitely scummy business practices, additionally nearly every edition of the mw22 battle pass has had the new weapons be broken to encourage buying tier skips

The new weapons in MW2 2022 keep releasing crazy overpowered, then get nerfed into oblivion as soon as people reach them in the battle pass as a free player which is a huge shame. I’m pretty jaded with the recent direction.

This just happened to MLB The Show 21/22/23's online servers. As of today, the Switch version still doesn't have complete RTTS functionality.
Since you mentioned it, AI in AAA racing games is consistently getting worse every year.

Nothing is going to change unless the gamers themselves show some will power (restraint) and say enough is enough. When they introduced the ability to buy VC to upgrade your characters stats for NBA2K, I stopped playing My Player altogether and just focused on online ranked games so no stat augmentations bought with VC could unfairly skew win rates. But the last few years, I have been so disgusted with their money grubbing that I've refused to purchase the title.
It's sad too. Underneath all the BS there is solid gameplay mechanices and fun to be had.
Consoomers have nothing else to live for.
Sounds like a business opportunity to me! Just make a sports collection that includes EVERYTHING under one roof for $60. No micro transactions, no DLC.

@@JustANoob1 Sports games without licence for the player names AND teams AND them being on the correct team for the current year tend to make a fraction of the money that those that have all three do, even if you try to get at least one of the three (be it team names, or player names). Unfortunately, a lot of people who buy modern sports games tend to buy them specifically because because "it's gotta have my guy, and my team." More or less a yearly subscription of sports merchandise, not really a "game purchase" to them.

Once upon a time the wwe games were so different between yearly releases it actually justified buying the game every year it's been well over 15 years since then and this is exactly why if I'm buying a game like a sports game it's at most once per generation
the last sports game i bought was a box of 2008,2009 2010 in a bundle for 20 bucks at a yard sale
MLB The Show is the only sports game series I have any respect for. They improve the quality every year, add more features and modes, and constantly update online content.

I've been saying this same thing for decades...basically stealing candy from babies when you consider how much of the industry targets kids.
You can totally play in Tecmo Super Bowl online leagues to this day. They update rosters every week and it's all the old-school Tecmo glory for the price of Free.99. Haven't touched the Madden franchise since Madden 16.
used to love FIFA, and I was an avid manager mode player so buying a new one every year made sense.
but now, paying the full price for a game that only has updated kits and a few new players stopped making sense to me since FIFA 16.
this is why ive always steered away from games with a heavy online aspect, and completly avoid games that are fully online multiplayer, even if they look like great gamesi would love, i just dont like the idea of paying full price for a game that i might not be able to play in a 2-3 years because they closed the servers or the playerbase died off
I think a multiplayer that allows the players/consumers to set up community-run servers themselves is the absolute best one. Heck, just something simple like letting one player host a server for one session is a good option. idk, it seems to be the most accessible concept for all people to me.
They could probably sell a new "NBA2K23" game every month and title it "NBA2K23J" "NBA2K23F" etc. for 80 bucks and these people would still buy it. One of the reasons I genuinely do not care if people pirate games & if they switch their regions just to get cheaper prices.
Most of these games are not even worth $20. I hope these corporations go bankrupt.

This is a very good and deliberate example of a predatory force-buy for e-sport fans. Want to wait 2 or 3 years to play the game because you can buy a secondhand copy for 10 bucks? Too bad! Want to go relive some memories of an old release from 7 - 10 years ago or more? Even more too bad! Instead, you're forced to buy a new title every 2 years and shell out 60 (now maybe 70) dollars just to have a game for 2 years and do it again.
I remember bf3, that was the last good one for me, same with black ops 1. After those two I stopped buying shooters. Most fun I ever had was playing metal gear solid online back in the day.
In NBA2K the micro transactions are mandatory to compete in online. After you spend $70 on the game you have to spend $70 on your player to be the same as everyone else. After you spend that $70 on your player you have to level him up to again spend another $50 to finish upgrading him. If you want to have 2 or 3 players it’s crazy for a basketball game.

I have a cousin who's a Fifa fan, he simply doesn't understand how they are a scam, every time i try to tell him that the games are the same gameplay wise, he defends it as if his life depends on it, saying bs like 'oh but there's new players' or 'oh but the clothes now move like real life!'

lets not forget either, when you create a player on 2k in order to even compete online, youre looking at an additioinal $60 in VC to upgrade said player to an 85. Yeah you can not do that, but you start at a 60 overall and get about 1k VC each MyCareer game. It cost roughly 280,000 to get to an 85...

I have played fifa 07 but upgraded to FC24 now after 16 years on ps5. For such a long leap it was worth it tbh i have allot of fun.
It’s been 5 years since I’ve bought a 2K sports game. That’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’d rather put that money into collecting classic titles from the OG Xbox and 360 generations in physical form that I can play whenever I want offline.

Companies should be required to make the server software available once they shut down their official servers.
Don't want to pay for server upkeep? Fine, but you don't get to just brick games that people bought and paid for.

When you buy a new racing game you get new tracks and new cars but I agree with Muta, with the popular sports like Football or Basketball there is so little changes between releases, I don't understand why someone would buy the new ones every year. If anything, you get even less content because of these stupid microtransactions.

There's wrestling game called AEW Fight Forever released last June based on All Elite Wrestling, the second pro wrestling promotion in the world. The gameplay is great there is no microtransactions, but it lacks of game mode like caws, match types, and gm mode.
Considering the branding around GTA Vs multiplayer, the GTA Online thing, I did and still do expect when the Multiplayer Component of GTA 6 launches, or a bit before, for the GTA 5 multiplayer to be shut down. So yeah, for this example, I can imagine it. I mean, it's the same Take 2 family.

So, I play WWE2K23, don't go to multiplayer because of my own horrible experiences in online games and I don't shell money on the microtransactions. I personally like the single player modes more cause they overhauled everything since WWE2K19 which was the last WWE2K title I had. Plus, me and my roommate could still play with or against each other whenever we have a 2nd controller. Although, the DLC is lacking, most of it is for the MyFaction mode which is online only and doesn't just have multiplayer which is insanely weird and makes it so all my DLC will be flushed down the toilet. I didn't realize this before I got it and if that's how 2K plans to handle DLC going forward then there's no point in getting it if the wrestlers in question are in the base game.
I still even play 2K19 to this day. You can’t get so close to perfect for a simulation experience.
They did this with 2k16 just after 18 came out, too. No more community stuff, no dlc, nothing left.
The best bit is that the platinum for wwe2k22 is already unobtainable for some people because daily challenges don't refresh and daily login rewards don't happen so unless you have the lifetime challenges involving those you can't plat it.
In the gifted and talented program they just made us do sudokus all day and if you weren't good at puzzles the teacher actively hated you. I spent four years there and all I remember is getting detention for throwing pizza at the deaf kids
