The most terrifying thing is that PS5 controllers are hyper susceptible to stick drift, so if these are made from the same parts, that's going to become a problem fast
Seeing as how I've had made ps5 since launch, use it every day, and still have no stick drift, you guys must be just throwing your controllers or something.

That's gonna be wild. I have my third controller in two years. My controllers are always kept in mint condition and I'm changing between one and another when one is charging. The red one is okay since two years. The white one keeps on breaking/getting stickdrift.

The fact the Switch, an actual full console running on ancient hardware, has far more functionality than this at almost the same cost is honestly impressive. Impressive in how hard Sony dropped the ball.
And lets not compare it to the Steam Deck, since that thing obliterates this thing in basically every way

A switch and a steamdeck are dedicated handheld. A portal is not. Its a ps5 accessory. The portal was designed to only remote play from a ps5 and it does that a lot better than any other device on the market.

@@TomoEriGoto Sony always thinks they're literal gods. Hence the PS3 being $600 sold at a *_loss_* by a few hundred bucks.
After PS2's success, they thought they could do no wrong. Then PS3 had the midlife crisis refresh in 2009 with the soft relaunch, logo update, packaging update, and so many new games that it sold more systems than Xbox 360 and caught up despite losing. Then when the Vita came out (2011) they were full of themselves again.
Doesn't help that the PS4 sold 117 million units and crushed Xbox One. Sony will never ever be grounded in reality ever again.
It was the duck's guts. The memory cards were a part of the problem, but it mostly boiled down to a lack of support from major studios. Basically all its notable games came out within a year of launch, and that was it. Sony decided it was more profitable to put all their eggs into the PS4 basket, than to split development resources to save a faltering platform. After they pulled out, everyone else quickly followed suit. The indies and obscure JRPGs that came out afterwards weren't enough to give it any more than niche appeal.
The worst part about this product is that it’s ultimately going to end up making more e-waste

The PSP and PS Vita were amazing consoles, especially for emulation. Also one of my favorites
didn't the original psp launched nearly 20 years ago, have a web browser? Back then it was pretty crazy to be able to browse the web on anything but a computer, but now it's the norm...
I remember downloading skins and themes for the PSP Home Screen on the console itself from the native web browser, shit was awesome.

The most common arguments I've seen in defense of this device is being able to use it at hotels and being able to have access to the adaptive triggers

Explain how a $400-1,200 phone with a Kishi controller for $40-150 is better than a $200 complete device?
Or a phone plus a $60 dualsense and then a phone holder.
Yes, the PHONE does other things. The dualsense could connect to a PC (ignore that because we're talking about PS5) but Kishi are limited to only playing on the phone and those go up to $150. What's $50 more for the 1st party complete package?
Again, we're talking about normies here who don't want to waste time looking up how to use their phone to stream from PS5.
Adaptive triggers ain't worth wasting $200 when I can just use the Switch. It's more expensive but at least I don't need Internet to play most games with it.

7:50 And that is by design. The Playstation Portal is not locally hosted. It will not work on your local network unless you give it internet connection. The signal travels trough sony's servers. The inconsistency can come from server side, so you might encounter different results even if you changed nothing in your setup. There is just no way around that.
Obviously this also means that the moment it is no longer profitable to run the servers, the portal will worth as much as it's components for salvaging.
The Portal looks like a prototype. Like some rough sketch that someone made for a patent filing. The placement of the analogue sticks inside the screen bezel is bizarre. As for the TV fight thing, that's one fringe use case. But you can buy a brand name 28'' 4K monitor now for the same or less money. Sony kind of has a history of this stuff though. Remember the "PlayStation 3D Display", and how dog water that thing was? And that was $500 back in 2011.
Dude fr tv/monitor prices are almost ridiculously low rn, you can but a decent sized TV for less than this 😂
A 40 inch 4K Android TV and a DS4 can be bought for the same price, sideload the PS apps to the TV, connect DS4 to the inbuilt BT on the TV. Now you can play your PS in another room, stream games from PS+, use a BT headset for voice chat. Or a 5G tablet will work in some locations to do this on the go.
The Portal is destined to flop, unless Sony unlock it's full potential with a firmware update, even then it'll still be overpriced trash.
I still have the the tv, preordered back when it came with two games, two sets of the rechargeable glasses and... ugh, wouldn't recommend
I don't think I've ever tried out the whole gimmick of using the glasses with the effect wehre it turns splitscreen into like, the whole screen but, yeah
Exactly the value proposition makes no sense. You can get a 4K TV for less money. Plus anyone with a PS5 probably has a phone or tablet already. This is a weird half-baked execution just like the PS1 classic - until they were easily jail broken 😂
What they should have done is make the portal it's own system.
At least the PSPgo could play it's own games.

thank u for this, genuinely. i’m a playstation fan and hate that they went this route. i also really dislike how almost every tuber is advocating for this. lastly, no one talks about how this is anything but portable when you want to take it to class, on trips, etc. it’s too bulky and inconvenient to pack, yet no one mentions that fact :/

It's surprising that Sony, being a Japanese company, hasn't tapped into the market for handheld gaming on public transit. Such as trains and buses, which is common in East Asia massive missed opportunity.
The parent company is Japanese but Playstation and some other divisions are American. The playstation division is literally not the same company anymore.

If Sony had the rationale and ability to:
1) Make the Portal work with PS4
B. Cut the price to $100 (Less than what the PSP and Vita cost at launch)
and 3rd; give you anything within in beyond just streaming the console
This would be a worthwhile add-on
even for 140$ and maybe the possibility of acting as a 2nd controller, it could be a tough sell

they should just have made the Vita2, maybe they could finally at this time be capable to minimise the power of the PS3 or maybe even the 4 and make a very decent portable console

I only had PSP and it was my first handheld and I enjoyed using it. Those were the good old days. But I literally had no idea that PSVita was that capable.
Recently got a PSVita and super worth it for the games that you can play after modding.

I went to EB Games' -I-uh-mean- GameStop's Black Friday sale yesterday and saw an elderly man walking out of the store, excitedly carrying a PlayStation Portal that he had just bought.
I really really really really hope he didn't buy it thinking it could play video games on its own, or even worse; bought it as a Christmas present for a grandchild.

The Wii U tablet worked and it came with the console. Additionally you had special features playing with it but it still was far away from an 8/10

So many people are so negatives for no reason, I for sure am not gonna buy it, and neither are you, but there is probably hundreds of thousands if not millions who literally have been waiting years for something like this. If it doesn't cater to YOU, it caters to them. The portal being completely sold out pre-order wise upon launch further validates my point
@@imac5834 The stupid part of all this is that it's a poorer solution to a problem already solved by Chiaki.
It'd be one thing if the Portal blew all other implementations out of the water, but they can't even send a reliable video signal to it. That's on top of it being the epitome of vendor lock-in.
Initial sales mean nothing. The AMD Bulldozer chips sold like hot cakes on day one too, but they were an abysmal failure in the long run, once consumers started seeing them for what they were, as will be this abomination.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony get sued in a class action by all the disappointed children who had their Christmas day ruined, and separately by their parents who got roped into buying a PS5 the next day. I don't see this ending well for Sony.

Even switch lite can watch UA-cam on it....
on top of the price gouging of memory, they placed little emphasis on cartridge sales. most games could only be bought digital, dampening their own sales. you had to use another computer to store your games(which took hours and 2-4 GB's ) before you could even begin downloading a new game. You couldn't just keep the save and delete the game cause the saves of digital copies could not be separated.
12:03 It would make more sense to just buy another TV at this price if someone else using the TV is such a huge problem.
My biggest concerns is what happens when this inevitably gets discontinued, because then you just have a shiny paperweight at that point depending how the modders manage to work their magic.
People can say, “Oh, they’ll just enable Bluetooth through an update if you want to use your headphones” but the point is, they locked the thing to their hardware.
It’s insane!
And the highest Vita memory card for $200* was **64GB**

I've used remote play since it was introduced with the VITA and I've never had a good experience with the feature. On the PS4 there's actually an option that allows the two to connect without the need of a router and still it has had issues by just the slightest movement. I've tried it on my phone when it became more widely available on Android devices and still had issues with lag. Tried it a few months back on Deck with chiaki, gyro controls playing The Order 1886 was amazing, still the image would start to lag and turn green. People hyping themselves up for this device, but I can't understand why. The option is practically on every device now, and it just has never works right.
So many parents and grandparents are gonna think this is a dedicated handheld, they'll think its a "PlayStation switch" or another psp or something, likely not even aware game streaming is a thing, and little timmy is going to wake up on Christmas with an expensive brick

A wild thought I had is that my Switch doesn't have an (stock accessible) browser, but I can still bring up the web pages for public guest internet auth. Crazy this doesn't at least do that.

I have fond memories of my PSP. Being able to play PS2 level games on the go was super cool. It really killed me that Sony dropped the ball with this, especially with how popular handheld gamimg is these days.
I have fond memories of hacking my PSP and playing Nintendo Games on it. It was also my main MP3 player... such good memories...

The psp and the psvita were ahead of their time. I’ll never forget playing some dungeon crawler with remote play on my psp with 2 of my friends. The steam deck is actually the big brother of the psp now that I think about it

Ofc phones are still the best handheld emulators.
For me the PSP was the Switch before the Switch. The fact that I can play games like Midnight Club 3 Dub City that was also available on the PS2 was mindblowing to me.

Was legit very excited about the leaks prior as PSP is one of my all time favourites. But in general I've been a Portable User, may it be a GBA, NDS/3DS or PSP/Vita also because of its library of games, Smash, Killzone Mercenary, PSASBR and Dissidia have always been with me ever since, and I bought a PSP3K just recently because my original PSP is half dead.
In the end I know it's going to be just a streaming device but I hoped, and I hoped that it's backward compatible with the previous games or have native games.
The Portal feels like Sony maliciously complying to requests for a new handheld, with absolute minimal effort. It's crazy how many people are defending it already.
Judging by your statement, you definitely don't own one. It has all the haptic feedback of DS5. That along with the comfort of an actual controller makes it the best streaming option money can buy. The only downside is that you have to buy Sony's expensive ass Bluetooth earphones instead of using your own.
It’d be kinda cool if you couldn’t already Remote Play for free from your existing Laptop/Tablet/Smartphone.
$200 for a featureless tablet sandwiched between a standard Dualsense is CRAZY.
There are tablets on the market with more features that sell for $50. The Portal doesn’t even have Bluetooth ffs 😂

Yeah, given how powerful the console APU is right now, it's should be completely possible that they could make at least 1 real portabel console
For example, AMD Z1 Extreme can play God of War at full HD low settings and still get playable 30fps, and that game is a PS5 game ported straight into PC

They could have allowed you to play the portable on public wi-fi by allowing their device with internet browser. That could bump their sales up so much as other people would see people play that portable at a café or airport etc

On my switch oled I’ve connected to multiple WiFi spots that require you to go to a web page to agree to tos it just pops up on the screen as you connect. Still, I can’t get my head around these portable consoles not having browsers.

Steam Deck already has more processing power than the PS4 ever did, both in terms of CPU and GPU. More expensive handhelds with better APUs are close to PS4 Pro level performance. Sony could definitely make a portable PS4 if they wanted to, and could likely do so at a $350 asking price if they made the right cutbacks and got the right deals going.
You mean like the steamdeck? There's handhelds even more powerful than the deck like the Ally and legion GO. In fact, they don't even have to make something as powerful as the deck. Just get an APU at the power of the PS3 for around 200 bucks with an OLED screen and sell PS2/PS3 games on it. That'll sell like hotcakes.

My steam deck OLED arrived today and tbh you hit it right on the head with "people are busy nowadays". It baffles me that Playstation just releases an portable "console" that looks ugly and on top of that is more of a hassle to manage with the connection than enjoy playing the game 💀
Edit: recently got a Playstation portal gifted by my grandma (never expected it but appreciated it obv 😊) and now I'm conflicted since it is nice but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have unlimited mobile data with like 5g internet connection and ur ps5 on for like 24/7 while at work. It's kinda worthless but also worth it if you're an hardcore Playstation gamer lol. The device still looks ugly as sh*t tho
Sad that we're all so busy and these companies are nickel and diming us to a point where all we do is work while all they do is put out bullshit that's half baked because they only want money. Why not keep PS+ the same price it was before the increase and not make this shit instead?

I remember buying the magic gate cards for my PSP. They were so expensive but if you have custom firmware you need all of the space.
I used to absolutely love my PSP, I can remember being able to go to Blockbuster and rent discs for the PSP. It was a bitch to use but you actually had a web browser on the PSP.
I have to wonder if the reason the Browser was left out is because most of the cracks for recent consoles (well besides the Launch Switch) have all originated from the Web Browser. Sure, maybe it was just an oversight, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a factor. I'm actually kind of baffled it can't connect directly. Remote Play back on the PS3, both via PSP and Vita, started out with the device connecting directly to your PS3. I actually played and beat AC: Black Flag on my PS3 via Remote Play on my Vita. It worked great, and never had any issues because I just connected directly to my PS3.
The Ps5 itself don't have a browser. They avoided so you can't use gamepass on it, via browser.
The portal has a browser to display legal stuff, obviously it's heavily restricted but I wonder if a crack could use that

I'm convinced that the Playstation Portal was originally intended to be a streaming portal for PSNow - following on the heels of Microsoft's developments in cloud gaming. It even looks like early mock-ups and prototypes of Microsoft's own handheld streaming devices. Thing is, Microsoft gave up on the idea of a dedicated device for streaming and instead released a cell phone controller cradle. It's like Sony tried to follow in their footsteps, came to the same realizations that it was impractical, but unlike Microsoft - either had supply contracts already in place or didn't want to pay for backing out of them - so they just neutered it, gave it a slight redesign, and then offloaded it onto their gullible fanboys in an attempt to recoup costs.
@Sinuev1 such a mistake. They could be a top competitor in the handheld gaming market if they just put out a psp/ps vita 2.0

Even more than the Portal's proprietary replacement of Bluetooth, the most baffling aspect to me is that a device most people will use in their home doesn't even have the option to stream directly from the PS5 and puts you at the whim of your WiFi speed.
What's wild is the PSP and Vita actually let you stream PS3 and PS4 to them! So Sony SHOULD have this tech on lock by now!
And yes I can confirm what you said about portables. The Switch is a dream come true for me because I can play it seriously on a big screen, but I can also just leave it by my bed and grind levels until I pass out. Steam Deck is a little finnicky for me but it also lets me do a very similar thing since the saves are backed up on the cloud. The portable/console dynamic is great.
I can't wait for people to hack this thing and make it a $200 portable emulation station. Then it might actually be useful lmao

Love hearing you praise the vita so much! The vita was the first mobile console I felt that truly felt like a real console.
It really was amazing. I think the only thing that really killed it was the lack of titles for it.
Bruh the DS from 2004 felt like a console in your hands. Even the 3DS which released 6+ months before vita.

As an owner of psvita all the way back from when it came out, hearing how far it came brings a tear to my eye. Also for those who are considering buying it, dont worry about storage, theres a way to use normal SD card memory on vita nowdays. Much cheaper and provides even better performance. Thanks Muta for giving love to the vita

The best part of the PS vita? You can emulate on it, play snes and even 64 games on it. It and my 3ds were the best things I ever homebrewed

The one thing that pisses me off is these companies don't seem to warn people to make sure there's not too many Wireless signals coming through your house because if there is you're going to get poor performance due to interference.
The Vita will never be forgotten, its still my favorite console to this day and the amount of memories I have there are just too great.
Especially with the LittleBigPlanet game, the community was really strong and endure so many years without support...only for the servers to close and be Lost forever...but it will never be forgotten

I bought a psp back in 2010. I put countless hours on it . I still remember playing with it in long trips. I still have it but now it runs on cfw. Which allows me to download games i never got play back in the day. And i got to tell, it is a joy playing midnight club 3 once again

I played the entirety of Spider-Man 2 remotely with Chiaki. The simple fact that Chiaki let's you connect from any internet connection vs the Portal's Wi-Fi-only limitation automatically makes it the superior method in my eyes.
the switch doesn't have a web browser but it still let's you log into the website for the public wifi. damn Playstation dropped the ball with this one.
I pre ordered it and I hate it with a passion. Multi second input delay with constant disconnections every 20-30 mins, 800ping spikes and constantly jumping from 1080- to 240p at times. I literally cannot see what’s on the screen when the latency spikes. My internet isn’t even bad and never had connection issues with my ps5. For some reason 3 antennas isn’t enough to hold constant connection.
Also the portal is in constant battle with your normal controllers to be controller #1. Had an issue where I literally had to turn off all controllers for my portal to send information to the game what profile is signed in. My portal can be player 1 signed into primary profile but if you have another controller turned on as controller #2 the game will default to the actual controllers profile even tho its controller #2 the game will think it’s the primary controller.

Ah the PS Vita. We had the first prototype of that in the small Sony studio I worked at. Was locked away on another floor only a few people knew about and worked on it...the big USP being the back touch (lol, that never took off). I worked on one of the launch titles .
It’s so sad. The rear touchpad was used so little that they straight up made a version of the PS Vita called the PS TV that didn’t even have it. I remember playing LittleBigPlanet on my Vita and using the rear touchpad and thinking how cool it was

Amusing given the gripes about the lack of a browser on Portal, my favourite use of Vita's back touch pad was the browser. It let you scroll pages just like the front touch, but without your fingers covering the screen. It was also a decent-ish way to accommodate the extra buttons for PSone emulation and Remote Play.
Finally a based take on this awful product. I’ve seen far too many people praising this product. Just cause it looks nice and is well made does not mean it is a product that should be praised. It literally has one purpose, that’s pathetic for the price tag. A sad sight to see people settle and praise mediocrity.🤷♀️😪

@@corrd3ll647there are many people who own this and are actually upset, either for the lack of Wi-Fi, or because they thought it was a portable version of the PS5. This is coming from someone who has a "Portal" (I use the Wii U Gamepad much like you use the Portal)
It's easy to see the appeal of this, it's weird it triggers so many people.
As long as mediocrity is good enough and has a cheap price tag, people will still continue to buy trash. Might as well save up another 100$ and get a dedicated handheld or just a little extra and get the steam deck and have essentially an all in 1 emulation machine in the palm of your hands.
I have not had any issues with the portal in my house. Little to no lag. My ps5 is hardwired to my internet so i am sure that helps. I had no issues playing it in NY on a business trip i had and my system is in PA. However i do believe that it needs a couple more features. You can not connect to internet service that has a verification screen unfortunately. I am sure they can fix this with an update for sure.
Can you lock the focus or remove the mic from the foreground. Camera keeps changing focus.
If they're using the same sticks as the Dualsense then God help the poor bastard that bought this when those sticks start drifting a year in.
