- Great and funny song from The Inspector General--Warner Bros. 1949. Starring Danny Kaye
LYRICS
Whisking through the whispering woods on a wild Romani pony
With a yak yak yak, and a yak se drak, and a yak se drak se donye.
Rides the gypsy
The gypsy
The gee-eee-eee-ipsy
The gip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ip-ipsy.
The world thinks him careless and tipsy and free
But oh, the poor gypsy (scream, squeak, gasp)
His lot is not what it ought to be. For...
Night and day and day and night there's a man they're sick of obeying
With a whip
In his hand.
Over gypsy he stand.
And this is what he is saying:
Um. Hum. Hmm.
Play gypsy, sing gypsy, dance gypsy, laugh gypsy, cry gypsy, live gypsy, die gypsy
DRINK...gypsy.
Drink to goodbyes and drink to hellos.
Drink to the open; drink to the closed.
Drink to me only with thine eyes, and I will drink with my nose.
And so we drink!
But first we sing.
Pause while Danny Kaye teaches chorus to his audience. It consists of "zoom," "shtock, shtock," and "Ha!Ha!Ha!" and another song--look at the bottom of the Description for lyrics/transcription, care of QAZRUS.
Play, gypsy, sing gypsy, dance gypsy, leap gypsy, dream gypsy, slide gypsy, slink gypsy
DRINK...gypsy.
And so we drink.
But first we play.
Pause while Danny Kaye plays violin
Play gypsy, sing gypsy, dance gypsy, smile gypsy, wink gypsy, blink gypsy, shrink gypsy
DRINK...gypsy.
And so we drink.
But first we dance.
Pause while Danny Kaye does flaming sword dance
And so we drink
To everyone we admire.
To the girl who sets your heart a glow and sets your heart on...FIRE!
And so we drink!

The song called "Ах зачем эта ночь" [ah, zachem eta noch], "Ow, why is this night".
There is a lyrics for you, you can add them to description.
russian
"Ах, зачем эта ночь
zoom
так было хороша
shtok-shtok
Не болела бы грудь,
ahaha
не страдала душа."
transcripted
"Ah, zachem eta noch
zoom
tak byla khorosha
shtok-shtok
ne bolela by grud'
ahaha
ne stradala dusha"
and if you interested
translated [by me]
"Ow, why is this night
zoom
was so good(lovely)
shtok-shtok
if only wouldn't ache the chest
ahaha
if only wouldn't suffer the soul
"
but this is not the end of it.
russian romance part ending and he's starting to sing faster. This is ukrainian song "Їхав козак за Дунай", and here is lyrics:
russian
"Лучше было бы, лучше было бы не ходить,
Лучше было бы, лучше было бы не любить,
Лучше было бы, лучше было бы и не знать,
Как теперь, как теперь забывать."
ukrainian
"Лучше було б, лучше було б не ходити,
Лучше було б, лучше було б не любити,
Лучше було б, лучше було б та й не знати,
Як тепер, як тепер забувати."
but there is a thing, Danny is using mix of this two languages [I don't know why], so he's singing like this:
Danny's version
"Лучше было бы, лучше было бы не ходити,
Лучше было бы, лучше было бы не любити,
Лучше было бы, лучше та й не знати,
Чем теперь, чем теперь забыва...
you want something to drink..."
traslation
"It would be better, it would be better not to go,
It would be better, it would be better not to love,
It would be better, it would be better not to know
Than it is now to forget.."

Far out, but what great fun these films were. Sooo much humor.
Id like to thank my parents for showing me this so long ago. Im only 20 and not many people my age have seen this or even heard of danny kaye. He was a magnificent actor/performer. Simly genius! I wish we had more of this in todays film industry.
I had that experience too, I'm 22.
In all honesty, I laugh at it ironically... Just remembering being shown this when I was a kid and thinking "What the fuck is this" hahaha
Same here. My Dad LOVES “The Court Jester” and we watched it a lot.
I’m 17 and my Dad loves The Court Jester as well, and this movie is amazing too. Danny Kaye was so talented.
What about his singing?
I'm 19 I love it so much. My dad bought a dvd with this, the three stuges and the road to bali at a young age and from then on I had such an appreciation for this golden age of cinematic comedy
they just don't make 'em like this anymore!!! I was so in love with Danny Kaye as a kid... he was so funny and cute and just plain NUTS!!! but ever so talented along with his wife Sylvia Fine, who wrote the lyrics for the songs in his films.. hope that through youtube another generation finds and enjoys his talent
Smiling ear to ear! I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Mr. Danny, since childhood. I’m 61 now and he is still as humorous as ever! We miss you Mr. Danny. No one could ever compare to you. ♥️
смешно смотреть как англосаксы пытаются изобразить Россию
Fantastico! Il migliore, meraviglioso troppo moderno per i tempi.
A multi-talented genius. No need for bad language or nudity or rudeness. Todays' actors can learn a lot from people like Danny Kaye, Red Skelton and the great Victor Borge.
Right, true talent...so beautiful to watch...❤😇
I wouldn't say the actors need to learn rather the directors and producers
@@vilepeople3477 and the script writers...!!
The year this was released was the year Danny Kaye was named as a possible communist to the FBI, part of the famous Red Scare. The past kinda sucked.
maybe he wasn't the best at something, but he was one of the best at everything! The ultimate performer.
So ahead of his time in comedy! My dad once told me that when he first came here from Germany, he saw this on TV. He didn't speak English yet, but he was rolling on the floor laughing anyway!
"I like it.. I LIKE IT!" hahahaha
I have loved Danny Kaye all my life. My grandma and dad did me a huge favor in life introducing me to these old movies and actors of such merit and depth. Love it.
There is NO ONE in Hollywood capable of Danny Kay's brilliance, talent, humanitarianism and joy in performing and entertaining. He left us much too soon.
It was a joy to watch him.
"Was"? Don't you mean, is?
if i remember correctly, most of his talent was due to his wife who wrote all his songs to try to trip him up
Johnnie deep and Jim Carey are the closest to this legend
@@malikmcclinton6294 Carey I'd ever so slightly allow to approaching this man's talent, but who tf's Johnnie deep? - surely you don't mean that talentless bumhole, Depp?!🤣
Not
The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!
yes, that's true, but it's all been changed now. They broke the chalice from the palace, so the pellet with the poison's in the flagan with the dragon and vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true! :)
Well, uh, the Doge did what the Doge does. Eh, uh, when the Doge does his duty to the Duke, that is.
Hahahah🤣👍
That’s my mother’s favorite line...!! 😂😂😂
Get it, Got it, Good...I am Sir Giacomo, king of jesters, and jester of kings
Never forgot this scene from watching this film in my childhood. I thought it was so hilarious. Nostalgia compelled me to look for it, and I found your upload. Thank you so much...
Always watched his movies when I was a kid....thanks to my parents for showing me such fun, sweet films! I love the Court Jester too 😊 Oldies but goodies they don't make films like that anymore
I'll echo so many comments below. Danny Kaye was incomparable. My cousins, siblings and I grew up reciting lines from the Court Jester such a one of a kind wonder but this too is a classic. What talent!
Lord this man's control over his voice is amazing!
Absolutely perfect. Nobody like him now. A gem captured.
I watched this when I was 16 or 17 and fell in love with Danny Kaye. His curly red hair!! ❤❤
Perhaps Danny Kaye's best movie. Consistently funny from the beginning to the end. It showcases Kaye's unique brand of comedy better than The Court Jester.
Well, it's close. For the longest time, it was this one for me. Then I saw The Court Jester (again) and found some fun things that resonated more than before so it took first place. Then...time passed, life added a few more angles and shades to my essence and I saw The Inspector General (also again) and it quickly regained its place as #1. So, it seems that every time I watch one of these two movies, it becomes my favorite -- until of course, I see the other one again!
Love this film. I always fall in love with the best actors who are now no longer with us! It's not fair!
I know the feeling
It's the nostalgia....the decor...the talent....the reality of there impressionism....takes my breath away everytime😁❤
Danny Kaye was one of the most funny I know, talented and entertaining with style. Not many others make me laugh as him.
The most unique talent & song & dance comedian of the 20th Century. *Period.*
Nobody like him before or after. Multi talented-and terrific actor.
I grew up.watching Danny Kaye. I love him. Recently my daughter played The Ugly Duckling to my two month old grandson. He loved it.
I could watch him all day. He is so funny. When we first had a TV when I was young back in the 50s, I watched a documentary about Danny and people suffering from leprosy, it has always stayed with me.
8:20 "Sets your heart on... *FIIIIIRRRRRE*
Nothing can best Danny
I’ve always loved the Danny Kaye movies a lot when I was a kid and I still do. His comedic talent was unsurpassable. Song, dance and acting, he got it all. And his timing was amazing..
Drink to me only with thy eyes, and I will drink with my nose. Classic.
Remembered it after years when my father used to show us this video when we were kids..
We miss you Danny!
This man is gold!
When my grandfather died, I viewed Danny as my grandfather. when he died. I loss two and was bummed!
David Wenham from Lord of the Rings and Van Helsing always reminded me of Danny Kaye.
This movie was released 75 years ago. I remember when I saw it the first time. My mother used to work in a nursery home for elderly people. This was before cable or satellite TV became available in town, so now and then the nursery home would receive some VHS movies (feel good movies which were harmless and innocent) which they kept for a month or so before returning them and receiving new ones (I had a feeling the movies were being shipped between various nursing homes in the country). Once the movies had been shown for the elderly, the employees would sometimes take the movies with them home so their children could see them too before returning them. The only movies I remember we saw was this one and The Cat from Outer Space.
A great all around actor he will be missed RIP Mr, Kaye
yesss! :) lolz This here is from the movie "Inspector General" Danny Kaye is like the most talented person ever to live he did it all, danced, sang, act, he was brilliant. Played in some really great movies like "Five Pennies" and "White Christmas" and "Court Jester" those are just to start OMG amazing man. :)
Don't forget Hans Christian Andersen
Soooooo funny and talented....loved to watch him as a child and still do...R.I.P ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😇❤❤❤❤
I like it, I like it ...
:D
I love Danny Kaye’s movies.
DANNY KAYE THE BEST ACTOR AND SINGER HEBREW FROM MY POINT OF WIEV
just great, great actor, comic, singer,etc....Love ya Danny....xoxoxo
One of the funniest people to live.
Watched this as a kid! Stayed with me to this day! :)
What a remarkable guy
"And soooo… weeee… don't drink!"
Danny Kaye is sooooooooooo funny!!!!
This makes me want to watch his movies again.
Totally love Danny.
I 1st saw this on "Family Classics" hosted by Frazier Thomas, WGN, Chicago. I saw so many classic films on this channel.
he was a rare genius, performer, singer, dancer and so much more..a true rarity like Robin Williams...
Cried like a baby when he died... Loved this movie
There's a few videos of the full movie of this movie. I watched it on dvd today. I think the first song Danny sings in this movie is funny. I think Danny Kaye sang in all his movies. He was a good comedian. He was good at singing fast & tongue twisting. My favorite movies of his is "Court Jester" & "White Christmas." On March 3, 2017 will be Danny's 30th death anniversary. He died 4 yrs before I was born.
You should see if you can get a copy of Hans Christian Anderson, and yes, he did sing in all his movies. I used to watch his show when I was a little girl, and I still think he's absolutely wonderful :)
He had an amazing voice, often overlooked because of his style as a comedian.
I remember Saturday afternoons and nights for movies on TV. Danny made me laugh when I was 6.
Absolutely wonderful alround entertainer.A legend RIP Mr Danny Kaye
One of the great entertainers! They don't make them like this anymore!
no they don't I wish they would
Too much talents

He was just the best.
A brilliant performer always. Can do anything with confidence.
