@@quantpsy3565 absolutely. Zero torque on the 4.0. With minor modifications the 2.5 roasts the 4.0 as well. 4.0 belongs in a GT car like the spyder’s chassis
I've got a 718 Cayman T! The spec on the one you've got is a bit poverty which I thought is strange for a press car, but you are right about a daily, I daily mine and love it, although you are correct, this is my first Porsche. Absolutely spot on review although I disagree a little on powerband issue, but mine is a PDK so it shifts so ridiculously quickly you never notice it having to change gear often.
You totally nailed it with this review. I have a base Cayman specced up like a T as I ordered mine in 2016 when the T was not available. The comments you make are spot on. It is my first Porsche and I love it but there is lag leaving you wanting below 3k revs which is massively exasperated by the high gearing. Setting off you can rev the nuts off it in 1st but slow corners you are unlikely to drop to first so get left in 2nd with a load of lag before it picks up. Mine is manual, I guess PDK can work around this engine somewhat because it would drop to first in slow corners. You are also totally right about Sport+ - its very clever it actually keeps the throttle open (ie air) flowing through the engine when you momentarily lift off and instead cuts fuel flow. By keeping air flowing through the engine and therefore exhaust is means the turbo keeps spooled up and you can see it hovers at 0.2bar instead of 0 so when you get back on the throttle there is no lag, but it does mean you get no bangs and crackles on the overrun as there is no fuel in the exhaust to ignite.
I am confused. Quite a few people are complaining about the long gearing paired with the 4.0 GTS high-revving engine. No way to use all gears in spirited driving on public roads. So, logically, the long manual gearing paired with the 2.0 turbo's torque band sounds right. Do I miss something here?
I agree that the base 2.0 is lacking the sound you would want especially at this price point. The one I would get is the GTS 4.0 Cayman. Without a doubt it’s the best Cayman for a more street daily type of car as opposed to the much more track focused GT4. My only issue is the price. It’s starts at $90,000 before tax and dealers fees. So out the door with maybe one or two options you’re over $100,000 US. That’s quite a keep over a used clean 981 or new 718 S. For now I’ll keep driving my great sounding powerful Bullitt Mustang, although it’s not as nimble as the Cayman, it cost only $50,000.
£136pm extra gets you into a 4.0GTS.... easy choice. BUT, there's a niche for the T and it's a a spec rarity. If you're not fussed by turbo lag and the sound then it's a wicked daily.
Would you rather have a 981 Cayman S over the 718 Cayman T? They are in a similar price range. I would have thought the 718 would have more torque for a daily.
Why does everyone wants the newest model? I'd rather have a 987 or 981 Cayman than a 718. Also think the 981 is prettier but that's personal preference.
Btw, good honest review. You would think that someone with a good relationship to the Cayman would be the last person to criticize a Porsche but you're just honest. Thumbs up!
Tire sports car needs more than a four pot cylinder, only the light weight 4C or A110 can pull off a four pot in a way mass car produces struggle. If it is not six cylinder flat six, then please take it back to the factory. Nice review Sid, your opinion counts to me as a proper driver.
I think It was a fair opinion, and seeing as you've owned a few Porsche Caymans you would know what to look out for. I'm currently thinking of getting into my first Porsche Cayman 981 s so it was good to hear your views on previous Caymans. Just out of interest Sid, would you go with a a 2014 Cayman 981 s or for around the same sort of money an older 911 997.2 s?
“To be honest”, too harsh. Maybe you drove this car on a bad day. I’ve driven a lot of cars, turbo and naturally aspirated, and owned some pretty sweet cars and I would never criticize the four banger like you have done. I will say that you are not alone, there are a lot of reviewer‘s who are hung up on the “soundtrack“. To me, a driving experience is only very slightly affected by the sound of the vehicle, as long as it handles very well. The 718 Boxster at any level is an excellent car, soundtrack be damned. The car that you’re trying to help give away is a turbocharged four-cylinder Golf R and it is also an excellent car.
The cayman T makes perfect sense in China. Where everyone is buying the 2.0T cos of taxation brackets. The 2.5t is just a step up in tax. The Chinese base 718 2.0t only makes 250PS for starting price of 540,000rmb (£61.5k) the Cayman T has 300PS and starts at 640,000rmb (£72.9k). The cayman s starts at 778,000rmb ( £88.6k). The Chinese market is also stuck with the 2.5T GTS cos the 4.0 would be a huge amount of tax. These prices quoted don't include luxury car tax, and local taxes only VAT included.
Damn, Sid not holding back! Good honest review, but tbh its the sort of price point i dont normally surf in. I'd probably get the Alpina though simply for the ride and collectable/resale factor, plus it looks more special tbh
also this 1.8 turbo engine straight from Renault Megane has *so much* better sound than Cayman's 2.0 liter taken from 911 with 2-cylinders taken out and turbo added.
Is the problem that there is little competition so they didn't have to build a fantastic car? The whole VW group is all about a car for every price point, seems like this is just one of them.
There is a reason they make the smaller engines. As the cayman is still “offordable” i and many others dont want to pay 4000€ for the s and 9000 for the 4.0 to put it on the road. The T is 1800€ so i know what to pick even if the sound is crap xD.
You could get a lest gen fiesta st and an older cayman while also having money to Insure both of them for less than this car, I think that's the way to go
