  • Something is happening at Porter-Cable. Their Instagram suddenly came back to life only 6 months ago, after being completely silent for 3 years. The last time they posted a UA-cam video was 4 years ago. But this morning, we may have good news for Porter-Cable fans. It looks like the sleeping giant just might be waking up. Let’s go.

    not holding my breath. They killed their routers recently which were the last of the quality professional tools. Their good belt sanders went away a long time ago. Stanley killed them. They could have turned them into a premium brand to compete with the likes of Festool. But instead, they turned them into a Ryobi competitor.

    I am a farmer in California. I know PC has become more flimsy. Though they are also pretty cheep. They do the job, though not as well as my Flex or Craftsman power tools.
    Here is why I still buy Porter Cable: Their air tools are still awesome. I have five barns and lugging around an air compressor to all locations is a pain in the butt. I can have a good compressor and tools in each barn and not break the bank.
    Their 20v line is a travesty, though if they get lost or I drop one out in the orchard its really not a big deal. Cheep enough to replace. The 5.5 inch circular is great for cutting fencing. The recip saw is garbage, but is good for pruning.
    Porter Cable has a niche with farmers. Lets see what they do with it.

    Once upon a time PC CORDED tools were some of the best tools out there, and all had made in USA labels on them, in my younger years working in cabinet shops and then having our own millwork shop for almost 30 years, the majority of the tools we had were PC. There 691 and 690 were the only routers we had and 360 and 361 belt Sanders also. I'm retired and still have over 30 of there routers in my small shop. All of a sudden though there quality went to Hell and stuff didn't last any time at all, and many many more tool brands were entering the market so they pretty much destroyed themselfs with there now, awful quality. I've never owned one of there battery tools but some guys in the shop did and they said they were not much good. There gonna have a big hill to climb to gain back there once loyal customers like I once was, wish them well but not expecting much from them, these days.

    I think you're over-playing this. TSC is nothing compared to Lowes and Home Depot ($8B sales vs. ~$110+/90B). Ace Hardware does almost as much sales as TSC. Cripes, Menards, which isn't even in half the USA, does 50% more revenue than TSC. If SBD put DeWalt exclusively in TSC, they'd lower their sales volume by like 10x. This is a nothing power tool brand going exclusive with a nothing retail chain but trying to make like its a big deal in order to not lose what little relevance they have left. *yawn*

    • @ToolShow
      @ToolShow  2 роки тому +1

      I hear ya Robert. I think the point was, that while their stores are smaller, it's because of their their target demographic. The big boxes are aiming at all DIY and construction. And while TSC has much smaller stores, their focus is smaller. But with 1,900 locations, they have a lot of reach. What we Don't know, is exactly how much of an investment TSC and PC are making in this deal. We'll only know once we start seeing the new tools in 2022. And I certainly wasn't suggesting DeWALT could have been put exclusively at TSC. The intent was to suggest they could have just added TSC as a distributor of DeWALT, and moved on. Instead, they're apparently working closely to build a line of power tools specifically for the "Rural Lifestyle". I have no idea how that will pan out, but I'm anxious to see what they come up with.

I've now invested my money in Dewalt XR tools the last year and couldn't be happier. Moral of the story is I think Porter Cable waited too long and the ones that bought into them like myself have moved on to platforms that have 100s of tools and amazing battery technology. My DeWalt 885 brushed impact is going strong after 10 years of hard work.
    I think there might be a few fanboys commenting here.
    Tools are good when they work a d do their specific task. Porter cable is a brand that generally had a quality tool, as are most products owned by the conglomerate. A day in day out professional wouldn't choose them these days, but that doesn't mean it's not great for a homeowner or handyman.

    SBD line consists of DeWalt, Black and Decker, Porter Cable, Bostitch, Craftsman and there may be others, can't recall or where they stand today (visit the SBD corporate page). Now what occurs is the lower lines are bastardized for price point, metal, plastic, rubber, boxes and bags, motor up and down grades. No innovation since Stanley arrived in the lower lines, margins business model. Remember when Craftsman had neat Christmas and Father's Day gifts, no more those don't fit the business model. Walmart for years wanted DeWalt, but no because it would cheapen the name. Look at the big boxes, little crossover everywhere. TSC and Porter Cable is a gimme because SBD isn't giving anything else and making it an exclusive for TSC, "this is where people will come to get there Porter Cable" certainly was the pitch.
