I definitely agree. I think this kind of mindset only encourages people to engage in bad habits, like getting rid of clothes, that are perfectly wearable, after a few years. If the stuff you buy is considered out-of-date within five years, or even less, than that just encourages people to cycle out their wardrobe more often, creating more waste and higher participation in fast fashion

Totally agree! As Gen Z though, it’s important to remember to not turn these style critiques into ageist and sexist remarks. Don’t want to wear skinny jeans? Cool! Don’t call the 30 something women who do “old” and “cringey” for wearing them though. Aging in American society is terrifying, especially for women, so let’s voice our opinions on fashion in a way that centers style, not age.

Yeah, that is a trend I've seen coming up. Like bullying and being mean in general seem to be "in" right now. Like we've gone full circle from cringe edgelord to faux woke virtue signaller to cringe edgelord again.

As a Millennial I remember hearing this saying, “she lived in the (insert time period) and never left.” If anyone knows the exact quote and where it’s from please share. It might have been an insult but I thought it was inspiring to dress how you like regardless of what was trending. My bestie was a goth in the late 90’s to early 2000’s and people hated it. I believe pastels, bright colors, and hip hop style was in. Her mom was a proud 70’s style Wiccan/Pagan and that was horrible to the trendy devoted Christians. I think there’s nothing wrong with trends, but people are gonna wear what they like no matter what is in. I love the new ideas any Generation brings so I’m fine with this. All I’m saying is if anyone is gonna dish it out, y’all better take it too. Hopefully it can be all in good fun. 😊
P.S. - I remember when people were ashamed of the things they wore in the 80’s, 90’s, early 2000’s. Then in the late 2010’s to now various trends made a come back. I predict the next trend will definitely be hipster fashion evolved (maybe that’s light & dark Academia or is that the evolved preppy style?) It would be cool if cottage core evolved or we get eco-friendly fashion. Maybe a hemp clothing phase? The creative ideas are endless.

1- wear vintage styles to the fullest, outdated styles can't be even more outdated
2- wear things that are so our of the mainstream that they were never "in" so they'll never be "out"
3- stop treating fashion as a right or wrong thing, it's self expression. Self. Not up to others, but to you

I’m not a dude and I don’t go searching around for guys fashion tips but from what I have seen there are a lot of “if you wear your shirt like this, girls won’t date you,” and a lot of other harsh comments. So, I don’t know, it seems like men who are interested in clothing get a lot thrown at them online too. Just by looking up styling tips for women vs men, men’s are sometimes brutal and much more specific. Women’s usually include something like “do what feels right.” Guys aren’t expected to have a style, but follow one it seems like. Idk why I’m rambling so much, just a deep wish I have to see more guys wearing interesting stuff and having interest in fashion for my own pleasure haha

a lot of these trends considered "cheugy" are still "staples" of the plus size community. Not by choice but still. Peplum tops and cold-shoulder are all fashion brands seem to want to give us.

I think why Gen Z hates “cheugy” style so much is that all those trends reigned supreme while we were in middle school. Everyone wore the heck out of cold shoulders and Adidas Superstars and now we can’t help but feel like those things look cheap and childish. I’d never let the word “cheugy” in my mouth though. In defense of millennials, we got a lot of heat for being “lazy” and tech-obsessed by the boomers for literally decades, and now gen z seems to be piling on from the other side. TBH from what I've seen on the gen z side they were just talking about the latest fashion trends and what was currently in style. Some millennials took it as a personal attack and started to retaliate(in very cringe ways) and of course with gen z mostly being children reacted in a way you'd expect from someone with their level of maturity. By pointing fingers and laughing at them.
The internet really has added a whole embarrassing new level to the age-old "Every generation older than me is out-of-touch and square and every generation younger than me is stupid and doesn't understand anything!" Also, as a mid-30s millennial, I sometimes have an instinct to complain about new slang until I remember my parents' faces when I tried to explain to them how 'bad' sometimes means 'good' and I realised how spectacularly hypocritical it would be.
I got in trouble with my boss (who was an elderly nun) for saying "derp". I was 31 at the time lol

Anytime I see a generational battle I always feel more alienated. I was born in 99 and I just graduated college. Millennials see you as a baby and gen z think you too old to be worth their time. There's some things here I would be caught dead in (the blue and coral chevron dress I wore to a middle school dance) but I love Maroon! It's a great autumnal color!

Exactly. I can’t take fashion criticism coming from someone wearing a reboot of my 90s wardrobe. Or even what would have been my mom’s 90s wardrobe. It’s like a reincarnation of what would have been the 90s equivalent of “cheugy”! Not hating, it’s their own tame form of rebellion. We were way more vicious against our elders in the 90s. They tolerated us because they destroyed their parents in the 60s.

It's stupid to care about what others wear but lets be honest the majority of gen z are still literally just kids who are going throught that mid/late-teens "revolution" phase where they do everything in order to become more independent from older people. Also tbh the nature of gen z is that they r just trolling and being sarcastic about their hate towards certain fashion items, i doubt any of them would actually bash people for choosing to wear uncool things, but for many other people that kind of sarcastic speak is difficult to understand and they take it as hate.

There are a lot of fashion subcultures that are also making a resurgence and use cheugy items like y2k bratz style has ugg boots and Emo/scene style still heavily praises the skinny jean. I feel like people who have an established curated style already aren't bothered by this at all.

that’s the main takeaway i’ve gotten over the years. trends come and go - curating a style that’s uniquely your own is the easiest way to be seen as fashion forward. if you have items you know you’ll take care of forever it becomes a lot easier to then add to that instead of trying to keep up with trends that are changing literally every day
Honestly people that have any sense of identity or preference wrt how they dress aren't bothered by this... not be mean but the white middle/upper class millennial women mad about this to me sound like their only identities and preferences are just "millennial culture" and/or what's trendy and that's why they're so heated about this because it's not trendy any more. If they had any sense of preference outside of that they wouldn't care either, but they don't have that sense of identity because they're just... bland. You dont see goths or punks or home sewists or people interested in vintage fashion in this "war" because they actually know what they like.
Yeah that's what I was thinking too if they already have their own sense of personal style they're not going to care about it but the millennials who don't have their own sense of style and literally only wear what's trendy BECAUSE it's trendy re freaking out because they figured out that they've gotten older and they're no longer the stylish generation. But if they had their own personal style philosophy or whatever they wouldn't care at all. Due to my religion I phased all pants out of my wardrobe. Which is pretty radical to a lot of people but it's my personal style my personal philosophy influenced by nothing other than my religion and personal conscience. If these women maybe had something else such as like religion or music or their personality that they use to choose to what to wear they wouldn't be freaking out and embarrassing themselves

It's weird, I'm a millennial and I hadn't heard/didn't know what "cheugy" meant until this video and everything you listed are things that I think any decently fashion-conscious person would already know are not really in-style anymore. I love that you remind us that it's not the end of the world if some of the things you wear aren't considered the absolute height of fashion anymore. One of the really liberating things about getting older is you start to understand what makes you feel best and stop caring so much about looking "cool." I'm almost 30 and I find it personally more "cringe" to be constantly worrying about being cool and chasing trends, and I feel sorry for the millennial women taking things so personally when they really shouldn't care that kids don't think they're cool, because of course they don't (although I've never seen it sourced what those videos are actually responding to- are they responding to a super rude, ageist tiktok that somewhat justifies the snarky response? Idk.)
I agree with you! I think that is one of the benefits of getting older, is that as you grow more comfortable in your own skin. You realize that you don't just have to follow along with everyone around you. You can decide what makes you feel good, what looks good on you, and let the trends eb and flow, while you become more constant in what brings you joy. And so, while children will always be looking around to know "what should I be doing," it's part of growing as a person to realize, "Oh, I can just do what's right for me." A simple concept, but one that comes with time and experience. Therefore, I find more fault with the older generation that feels the need to "clap back" on these children. Because honestly, they should just know better. They should be able to see that this is the natural course of life... There will always be the older generation-- settling-in-- while the younger generation comes up, and is growing. I'm 34 btw, 🤣. Clearly an evil, cheugy, millenial. 💁♀️

I’ve never been happier to have found and developed my love for lolita fashion on tumblr in the 2010s. It’s nice to not have to feel any kind of societal pressure to get rid of clothes I like because they’re not “trendy”. I honestly think if I didn’t develop the non care feeling for my own fashion living up to other’s expectations, I would feel very down these days with how quickly trends change.
Really good analysis. When I was a teenager in the 90s, I used to call anything with an 80s fashion vibe 'cheesy' so this seems similar. The difference was no social media so there was no public mocking of 80s fashion except in magazines or maybe on tv. I think a lot of cheugy style is quite feminine and flattering, whereas gen z style is often quite masculine and unflattering in my opinion.

In my opinion we should wear what we want to wear and what is looking good on us. Skinny jeans make me look skinny and proportionate, but mom or boyfriend jeans make me look short and big nearly as a square. But I love cottage core and shirts with puffy sleeves and other things. Tbh I love certain early 2010 trends. If someone wants to wear something that makes them happy then I applaud them. The best outfits are the ones where the person has a smile.

I’m and elder millennial and I’m glad to revisit the 00’s trends, because in that era I was a broke teen with zero ideas of trends or style, and now that is back I can get to wear pieces that I loved and wasn’t able to afford. Middle parts do NOT look good on everyone, seriously, also “fox eye” (hate this term), eyebrows... a lot of people need their eyebrow tails and side parts for facial harmony. I think what people should realize is that just because something is popular, does not mean it will look good on you!!! So to hell with what’s in, if you look good you look good!

My hair does a natural part to the side, as well. I try to part it in the middle, and it never works - two reasons: my hair refuses, and it looks terrible. I try the other side, and same two reasons, and it just FEELS wrong.

If you know anything about fashion you know its constantly changing. Every generation wants to put their own spin on things, as they should. Just wear what you want, what you are comfortable in. Confidence is the best accessory and if you aren’t comfortable you can’t be confident.

I think why Gen Z hates "cheugy" style so much is that all those trends reigned supreme while we were in middle school. Usually, unless you have reallyyy young parents, it goes every other generation. I only know one millennial (1989) with a gen x parent (1969) and that's because she was pregnant at 19.
The vast majority of millennials (over 75%) have boomer parents. If your parents are gen x, you're likely not a millennial, unless you had teen parents or something

I feel like millennials get pissed about say, low rise jeans, because they were honestly such a trigger for eating disorders. If you were able to wear a crop top AND low rise jeans, you made it. We weren't at the body positivity point that everyone else is at now and I feel like somehow people forget that even though it has permeated throughout our entire life.
I will definitely agree with this. I was in my mid teens when hiphuggers were all the rage. I wore them though I sported a muffin top with them. But my shirts covered my midriff, mainly due to strict dress codes at school. But I remember some girls wearing both the hiphuggers and crop tops, and they were incredibly thin. Today, I see a lot more body positivity with curvy girls wearing the crop tops and showing the midriff, but with my age and current personal tastes, I'm not willing to try it myself.

I share my closet with my mom who was born 1963. She has pieces from the 90s and early 00s that still fit her and now fit me. And people always ask where I got them haha.
VERY TRUE i used to wear coats i got as hand me downs or was gifted during winter to school instead of colorful goose down jackets which was the trend and some did call me old fashioned by i honestly didnt care because i really liked how coats looked. Whenever people say something is cheugy, it just reminds me of that item, gives me a rush of nostalgia for it, and inspires me to wear it again. I go through phases with the clothes I own but I always come back to them
i think it’s hilarious how seriously the adults that partake in this conversation have taken everything. i honestly feel like the whole thing began as gen z being young and poking fun at older-people-things and millennials just turned it into a whole Thing.
Actually they just said "skinny jeans go away" and apparently millennials tough that the opinion of kids/teens are more important to them that it should be (just say fuck it and wear your skinny jeans people, I am Gen z and still wearing them 💁)

as a 31 yo, I am not preoccupied with teenagers thinking I’m cool, so I will fully embrace the cheug. every generation rebells against the previous one. I feel like it'd be lamer to perpetually try to keep up with the trends or even worse, fight against them.

This just sounds so US American centric because yes I've seen generational differences where I live too but people generally just accept that they have gotten older and don't care what the younger generation thinks of them and wear whatever they want and feels right for them. I haven't seen anything even close to this war between gen z and gen y here.

@-w -a I say that because they seem to be making the most "noise", and anytime I see commentary on this type of stuff, overwhelmingly no one else is featured. Maybe that's intentional 🤔 but I also try to keep tiktok drama at a distance with a 10 foot pole so...

The silver lining of being a chubby woman (5'1", US size 8-10) was that I was always more concerned about what was comfortable and figure-flattering instead of what was fashionable. "Extreme" silhouettes like very skinny jeans, very low or high waists, very loose pants, or ruffles everywhere don't work very well on me, so I end up with a lot of in-between things that are neither super dated nor super on-trend. I might update with some new pieces every now and then, but looking at my wardrobe today, I still feel OK with a lot of the things I acquired years ago. That said, I do think I could experiment a bit more, and am now taking advantage of seasonal sales to change it up a little with different cuts of shirts and sweaters.

gen z is the worst about that, like they are trying to quickly label and compartmentalize everything they are, it seems super fake an embarrassing. yes older people did that too with emo / goth whatever but the obsession with identity has spiraled out of control

@@eviedegrandpre5268 nah i'd argue gen z has gone more overboard with it. i was there to witness how people are with labels back then compared to now. it should not be surprising when a generation pretty much grows up online on social media, social media being a place very centered around talking about yourself. so it makes sense that this generation of young people are even more obsessed with labels and sub cultures than generations before. i even notice people on tiktok having very similar mannerisms / ways of speaking / slang etc which is understandable of every generation to a point but seems more noticeable with this generation. again, i believe this does have something to do with social media and young people are cultivating a sense of identity and belonging from social media constantly seeking out validation from other people.
@@soso-mx8nb i agree to some degree, i think social media has had a big part in making it the norm to label every little aspect about yourself and since gen z is more likely to have spent more of their life on social media vs millennials they didn't get to see what it was like before. There are still some people who realize that micro labels for everything about them aren't helpful even if they're gen z so it's not inherently a generational thing it just appears that way. Esp with most younger gen z not being taught internet safety, i.e. more likely to share every aspect abt themselves online

I don't know how to feel either (I'm also 23). in HS I absolutely loathed the minimalism of the 2010s😅 It made me explore other styles tho which was fun
I’m a year younger. Born 1998. It’s definitely weird to be in between. I didn’t like the styles we had in early to mid 2010’s. 2016 and onwards had the better fashion of the decade IMO. But my favorite style probably has to be from the 2000’s. And even then the trends of that era came from other times like the 60’s and 70’s and some leftover from the 90’s. So I love all those decades. I even love more retro stuff like 20’s-50’s. I have an appreciation for a lot of fashion tbh. I just don’t like how things were executed in the 2010’s. Literally the most ridiculous cheap looking clothes ever thanks to fast fashion. I haven’t really had any style the past few years because of personal reasons but when the time comes for me to finally start putting myself out there I’m just gonna wear whatever I think is cool

i'm 1996 and i see different results on what the "exact line" of millennial and gen z is . Ive seen 1994,1995, 1999 etc so we're considered in between "zillenials" . I love/prefer the current 2020s fashion trends,new music, and new humor instead of the stuff before but i guess i don't quite belong so its confusing and sad😭
