Donkey Kong is awesome on the SNES Super Game Boy! And I love that Space Invaders has a 16 bit version for the Super Game Boy on the cartridge as well!

It just goes to show that even though these consoles may be getting on a bit now, the fact that we still want to play games on them after all these years is testament to how great these games are. I reckon we will still be playing them in another 20 years time!
Found this video this morning went to my local record exchange and they had a super gameboy for 15 bucks.of course I got it and I also grabbed ren and stimpy and mario land 2
And the DK gets an added audio boost. Pauline has a voice, and some music gets an extra instrument or two, noticable during the end credits music especially.
I just recently completed Link’s Awakening on the Super Gameboy and you are spot on-it is well worth a playthrough on the Super GB. I preferred the red/purple palette.
Gameboy and gameboy color were my life savers watching my sisters softball games all the time as a kid . Great video marioland 2 is still one of my favorites all time stay healthy
Don't forget that Donkey Kong is a huge and difficult game with so many more levels than you might expect by the cover. It seems to me it's the beginning of the "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" series.
One I'd add to the list is Megaman V. It was Super Gameboy compatible with it's own palette right at release and that carried over to the GBC and GBA. Of the five Gameboy Megaman games, it's one of the most sought after ones.
...and I traded it for some random game I can't remember now 😑I put so many hours in to MMV GB, first Mega Man game for me and Capcom still gets my money each time these collections come out lmao
john take your time with the demos in the videos, theyre so fun to watch but feel like you just want it over with. we got nothin else to do. make your channel immortal!!!!!!!
Ah the Super Game Boy, I owned one before my first Game Boy. Was very disappointed with the Gamecube equivalent, which lacked so many features of this. Great video.
*It was the best sir! Space Invaders was magical or amazing programming too It contains a full Super Nintendo copy inside!! I have Super Game Boy 2 sir this year 2020* ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Wishing safety for you and your family. Maybe this virus will be gone one day. I have never been to a convention, but would love to come to one and shake your hand and thank you in person. John, you are an awesome person and I think a lot of you as a friend and creator. God bless.
I really appreciate you talking about the Game & Watch Gallery series, G&W Gallery 2 is one of my favorite games mostly because of nostalgia, I spent hours on it as a kid. Still the best way to play some old Game & Watch games which you sadly can't emulate.
Thank you for this video! Recently picked up a Super Game Boy but had no idea what it did other than it plays Game Boy games on SNES. Looks like it's compatible with Retron 5, so I'm going to have to give that a spin. Would've been nice to see Final Fantasy Legend enhanced, but doesn't look like it's on the Super Game Boy list.
I vividly remember both Donkey Kong and Space Invaders being the games I played the most (and, well, Pokemon Blue of course), but the SGB was definitely a super cool accessory and it would've been great to see devs get more creative with it.
I wish some of the later releases of Game Boy games included more of the Super Game Boy features. Same with the Game Boy Player, it had different borders and added rumble to a few games but didn't carry over any of the Super Game Boy functions.
Man... I had so much fun changing the color palette of my gameboy games. The Super Game Boy really was mind-blowing for me as a kid. Great times John, thanks for the nostalgia, great video!! 🤘 Ps: and if I'm not wrong we could draw the background.. it was amazing!
OH MAN, I loved Pocket Bomber Man as a kid! I also had the Super Gameboy as well so it made the game even better. The music for the last world was amazing. It reminded me of the Darkness theme (level 2) in Castlevania Adventure for Game Boy...oh man, it STILL gives me shivers and goosebumps. Castlevania Adventure was probably not the best version of the franchise but they nailed it with the soundtrack. Thank you for this trip down nostalgia lane.
I just got a supaboy and super gameboy so I’m excited to try some games. Do you know if it will play repro gameboy games? Original Pokémon games are pretty expensive now
I'm of the (likely niche) opinion that DK '94 kind of looks better monochrome, so it's really nice that they included the option to turn off special palettes. DK '94 with all the Super GB enhancements and a nice green, b/w, or the Super GB red monochrome palette is my preferred playstyle!
Cool episode. Can you make more handheld coop games. Full walkthrough. Like GB double dragon 2, Balloon Kid etc. No one ever done that... So we see both screens full play through. BTW Great show!
Please someone explain how they get the graphics for the background overlays? Are they stored on the GAmeBoy Cart or the Super GameBoy? Presumably the latter. Man theres so many cool SGB overlays.
Games that were released after the SGB had the extras on the GB cart. Some legacy titles were enhanced by the SGB, otherwise the SGB had defaults you could apply to any title.
I pulled out my Super Game Boy and was going through my game boy games and noticed that one of my personal favorites was also a Super Game Boy game pak. I just hadn't played it on my super game boy before. James Bond 007 for gameboy is a really fun, detailed and immersive game that is exclusive to the Game Boy. The customer Super Game Boy Frame makes in look like that game is being played on James Bond's soy watch. It looks pretty cool!
Damn the pokemon GB gives me mad nostalgia. When you put it in the N64 transfer pack, thats the background overlay that it uses too when you play Pokemon on big screen via Pokemon Stadium
i love gradius (though i think it has a different title?) revenge of the gator & kirbys pinball land. alleyway is fun. and a favorite on the nes. super rc pro am II is another good one!
Castlevania legends gets an upgrade and the pokempn tcg game is also much cooler! The border has spots for each gym badge and they fill in as you beat that leader!
Now I'm about to play my super Gameboy! Right now I'm actually playing wario land on my virtual boy. But watching this makes me want to put my Gameboy camera into my super Gameboy and play all of the different side games, as well as put funny stamps on my pics and print them!
I played a game on the pc many, many years ago called Mamba. Qix reminded me about it. It is very similar. Do you know Mamba? Also Contra looks a lot like Probotector.
Way too many of the games on this list were first party games that predate the Super GameBoy and had not-special pallettes (as in selectable on any other pre-SGB game) pre-assigned to them based on their header. That probably should have, at best, taken up a single slot on a list of 20 games. It's more of a foot note than anything. I was expecting this list to be entirely made up of games that used the Super GameBoy's unique features in interesting, unique, or well done ways. That said, the inclusion of a few different games that had different sounds on the SGB was well appreciated. I feel like those are the *least* well known SGB enhancements outside of Donkey Kong.
I watched the video and I think the hyperkin one is the better option with less emulation issues and better video quality. Would you recommend the retron 5 still?
Here's the list of my rather small GameBoy library Since all of them are compatible with Super GameBoy, they are all something I would probably play with that accessory. The Chessmaster Go! Go! Tank Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge Mega Man II Nemesis The Ren & Stimpy Show: Space Cadet Adventures Solar Striker Space Invaders Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Super Mario Land Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins Super R.C. Pro-Am Tetris Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
You missed the mark on Tetris blast without mentioning the fight mode . If you didn’t play fight mode and you are any good at Tetris go play it right now
bsnes and higan both support SGB, giving you the full experience via emulation. I believe Sameboy also has basic support for the SGB hardware, even though it doesn't emulate the entire SNES system.
@@jamesjesssonic partially, on the Wii version (VBA GX), if you load any SGB game onto it, the game loads with its own special Super Game Boy border. Space Invaders' hidden SNES game does not work, however.
Mega Man V is the only Mega Man Game Boy game with Super Game Boy functionality, funny enough, it’s the best out of all of them because it’s it’s own original game rather then being based on the console versions. It’s stupid expensive now but Japanese versions of the game are a lot cheaper so I recommend getting that which is called Rockman World 5, it’s the same game except it being Japanese which isn’t a problem with a Mega Man game at all tbh
I understand that you can play the SNES counterpart but imagine being poor as a kid and getting a copy of killer instinct or donkey Kong country and being able to play it with the borders and everything
There has been progress but nothing to publicly announce yet. Plan is to hopefully give an update later on this year. As you might notice, the world is dealing with some other things right now.

I actually have both Space Invaders on the Game Boy and Space Invaders on the SNES, they're the exact same game!
@ And I wonder if a higher percentage of them will be working versus disc based consoles and games.
MaddieMJD *No! The SNES has 2 players so NOT the same game!*
Found this video this morning went to my local record exchange and they had a super gameboy for 15 bucks.of course I got it and I also grabbed ren and stimpy and mario land 2
The best part about DK for Gameboy is that there are tons of new levels that no other version has. It's basically a whole new game.
Every level on Donkey Kong Land is new and unique to the game.
because it is a whole new game 🙄
And the DK gets an added audio boost. Pauline has a voice, and some music gets an extra instrument or two, noticable during the end credits music especially.
Mega Man 5 on the Super Game Boy, to me, is the best way to play. The custom border the Super Game Boy gives it was perfect.
Probably my favorite video game peripheral of all time.
The 94 GB version of Space Invaders basically had the full SNES version packed into that tiny cart. It's a pretty cool novelty.
I just recently completed Link’s Awakening on the Super Gameboy and you are spot on-it is well worth a playthrough on the Super GB. I preferred the red/purple palette.
Kirby's Dream Land 2, Mega Man 5 and Mario's Picross are some faves that took advantage of the SGB.
Gameboy and gameboy color were my life savers watching my sisters softball games all the time as a kid . Great video marioland 2 is still one of my favorites all time stay healthy

Good to know, thanks for sharing! I just got one, so these are all good. Cheers and rock on!
John, you should definitely apply the clock mod fix to your SGB or get the japan only SGB2 👍🏻
SGB2 would definitely be a better choice. Proper clock speed and as a bonus, Link Cable support!
Ah the Super Game Boy, I owned one before my first Game Boy. Was very disappointed with the Gamecube equivalent, which lacked so many features of this. Great video.

Great video!
I love playing Pokemon Pinball and Kirby Pinball using the Super Game Boy!
There's a remake of Tetris Blast included in Tetris Axis for the 3DS, and the 3D effect is impressive in it.
I really appreciate you talking about the Game & Watch Gallery series, G&W Gallery 2 is one of my favorite games mostly because of nostalgia, I spent hours on it as a kid. Still the best way to play some old Game & Watch games which you sadly can't emulate.

A great accessory, that benefits not only SNES users, also Game Boy Color ones. Also the whole stylish and aura of the system has a lot o appeal.
Pocket Bomberman & Tetris Blast both look really cool, I never heard of em! Love the Super Game Boy, looking forward to the Retron Jr. too myself.
Correct me if I'm remembering something that never happened. Wasn't there an option to put a canvas border around the game and draw on it as well?
Correct, that is an option to do on any game.

Thanx john for your super gameboy video.
I had one as a kid - it really was a great accessory
Parodius Da! is a great one for the super game boy :)
I heard about pokemon blue, red, and yellow can run x12 faster with the super gameboy how do I do that?
Does the pokemon tcg gameboy game have a special screen?
Which OST is played in the intro?

I still use the SGB but I rarely like the color options. Usually I prefer the black and white pallette.

Games that were released after the SGB had the extras on the GB cart. Some legacy titles were enhanced by the SGB, otherwise the SGB had defaults you could apply to any title.
Awesome job with the vid John! The super gameboy is awesome but I honestly prefer the hand held more most of the time.
I like playing elevator action and setting the colors to black and white, gives the whole game a noirish vibe

King of Fighters 95 on Super Game Boy. 2 players on screen at once. Great game.
I had a smurfs game that used the Super Gameboy to add a number of extra colours.
Now I'm about to play my super Gameboy! Right now I'm actually playing wario land on my virtual boy. But watching this makes me want to put my Gameboy camera into my super Gameboy and play all of the different side games, as well as put funny stamps on my pics and print them!

no pokemon red blue or yellow??? those games were a legend truly a legend in the 90s. i ditched school for them
Featured Red in the video ;)
@@johnhancockretro missed it thanks. well done!
Fun fact: The ds(on r4) has gameyob, which is a gb/gbc emu w the super game boy enhancements and borders
the gameboy camera is good on the sgb too
RPGs like Pokemon are the games that could benefit the most from the SGB.
Donkey Kong was SO AMAZING
I liked the color palettes for Kirby's Block Ball. (Japanese title... I dunno the US version's title.)
Way too many of the games on this list were first party games that predate the Super GameBoy and had not-special pallettes (as in selectable on any other pre-SGB game) pre-assigned to them based on their header. Galaga arcade classics on super gameboy arcade color palette. Was my favorite way to play galaga
Try Tetris DX on Super Gameboy. There are some Gameboy Color games that use the Super Gameboy effectively....Battlezone/Super Breakout is also good.
John what are some good cheap Super Nintendo clones with HDMI you would recommend?
GAMERZ Tek one or the Super RetroN are decent budget options.
Ok thanks. Do they work with super game boy as well?

"RT 85" Sit back relax, oh !! My God!! its Stevevy Richards !!!! :)
I played all of them on Super Game Boy. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the Movie game are made for Super Game Boy. Also Great games.
I absolutely love playing dk land on the super gameboy.
