Jackson is lauded as a great humanitarian for adopting an orphaned Cherokee child...but as an elder from the tribe stated "If Jackson had not come and massacred the boy's parents, he wouldn't have *been* an orphan"
It also wasn't like it was some kind of penance, that's forced assimilation/imperialism in a nutshell - kill the parents and elders, then indoctrinate the children in your language and culture.
@@Sorcerers_Apprentice I think that The duality of Jackson shows in this story. He was on one hand a fierce warrior. Using friendly native Americans to help battle any who opposed the new country that he loved. He was no worse than what the Spanish, French and English had done conquering the new world. On the other hand I think he saw himself in this orphan child. The British has killed his family while he was a teenager.

Another example of we can't depend on schools to teach us the majority of this stuff, we have to teach ourselves! It sounds like he was as much a frickin' lunatic as King George! Just, holy crap man!
martinmorles1 Not to mention that the history books tend to ignore some bits of information. Being that I learned about Jackson (a Tennesseean) in a public school in Tennessee, I’m not surprised that many of the facts in this video were not included in textbooks.
The chances of Jackson living as long as he did is ridiculously low. Number one, in a past duel, he was shot in the heart and lived. He was also shot in the arm and the chest again in another duel. When someone tried to assassinate him, he shot two pistols both of which misfired. The odds of both misfiring was calculated to be about 1/125,000. Later when he was busy fighting Natives, he was being held at knifepoint by one of them, another Native American decided to save him, hoping to help decrease tensions between Natives and USA. He also survived Malaria. There were also many times during the War of 1812 he should've died but I don't want to get into that. He lived to 78 which was crazy at the time.
As someone of Choctaw descent I want to thank you for including my family in your discussion on the Trail of Tears. Most people only mention the Cherokee.

The author chose to bash Jackson for every aspect of his life, and painted him as a crazed lunatic. He was not, and it is fallacious and lazy to characterize him like this. A very skewed recounting of Jackson's life.
They teach this in the state of Oklahoma. I read somewhere it's about 30-40% of history lessons are dedicated to Jackson's violation of Human Rights. Much like his own museum stating that he made money off of slavery, the state of Oklahoma doesn't hide or deny the fact that Jackson sucked as a human being.

Have to agree. Jackson was a ass in alot of stuff but the issues of the time were complicated. Things like the Indian removal, as bad as it was, involved many issues including danger to the natives from the population of the whites
At 2:30 into the video the image and narration makes it seem as if Jackson is supposed to be the man with the sword. However, in that image, Jackson is the boy with his hand up, blocking the strike from the British troop after he refused to polish his boots. 😁👍

Talk about indoctrination. Did they cover any of the known abuses by Native Americans? The raiding, pillaging, slavery, torture etc? I'm NOT anti Native American. But history needs to be taught in a balanced way. The natives were NOT one cohesive group. They were many different groups who had allied with various foreign powers for hundreds of years prior, and were often at war with each other. Not only did they often enslave people from neighboring tribes, they also often kept black slaves as well. During the Trail of Tears march, some very wealthy native leaders actually had their animals and slaves shipped in wagons to the reservation, and arrived the same way. This does not diminish the tragedy of running people off their land. But modern history books and videos such as this usually portray a very one-sided picture of American History. There were plenty of good guys and bad guys on all sides. Most of the "genocide" was done by microbes, not Europeans. Whether they be the good, the bad, or the ugly (or a combination of all three), I believe important historical figures, like Andrew Jackson, deserve to be reported on as accurately as possible, remembering that it was a very different era. We only think we know how we ourselves would've reacted, based on a very different life, our upbringing and modern sensibilities.
The MemoryHole yeah but it was less about native Americans and more about Andrew Jackson of course most people know that but it’s like saying the woman and children decided that but they were killed in the march do u get that?

Lmao my school just did a mock trial against other schools and we won first place. I bet yours was really interesting. Our case wasn't all that interesting. I was a prosecution attorney though and it was VERY fun to scare the other team's witnesses. I was super excited the day of mock trial and we were so prepared I wasn't nervous at all. Watching my class's defense go against another school's prosecution was entertaining and I kept giving my teacher thumbs up and stuff as we nodded at each other because we won that one by a landslide. When I got up to the podium I wasn't nervous at all. I don't think I've never felt calmer actually. Which is surprising since the witness I had was a tough one, the other team's best witness and I couldn't tell who was winning at that time, and I had gotten really nervous during practice. I know the true hypocrisy is believing that North Americans were the biggest supporters of slavery. In fact, North America had few slaves compared to South America and the Middle East, which owned over 60% of the slaves in the slave trade from 1700 - 1860’s. Further more, slavery in America was very regional and only held by a small minority of elitist. We can agree the authors of the Declaration of Independence were imperfect. Especially in light that many of the original settlers escaped to the new world in search of freedoms. It’s also peculiar that we are told in U.S. history that the United States fought a war to end slavery, while the rest of the world (except the Middle East) were peacefully abolishing slavery... which begs the question, why do the people of these United States have to carry the burden of being racist?

So much, that it is now a threat to freedom, and in fact the very nation itself. In Jackson’s day this opposition to a democratic society was the banking interests. Namely a central bank, had its tentacles in every facet of influence, just as it is today. These interests are very much at play today. These interests are very calculating. On January 30, Jackson was attending the funeral of South Carolina Representative Warren R. Davis at the U.S. Capitol. Lawrence originally planned to shoot Jackson as he entered the service but was unable to get close enough to him. However, when Jackson left the funeral, Lawrence had found a space near a pillar on the East Portico, where Jackson would pass. As Jackson walked, Lawrence stepped out and fired his first pistol at Jackson's back; it misfired. Lawrence quickly made another attempt with his second pistol, but that also misfired. It was later determined that the weapons that he had chosen were noted for being vulnerable to moisture, and the weather on that date was humid and damp. Lawrence's unsuccessful attempts were noticed by Jackson, who proceeded to beat him with his cane. The crowd (which included Representative David "Davy" Crockett) eventually intervened and wrestled Lawrence into submission.[2]
Such were the days when only action mattered. Truth and righteousness were beside the point. Those were the early formative days before America didn't know itself.

It’s really interesting how little people know that the Democratic Party originated from the southern/ confederates. I don’t side with either. It’s just a in-depth fact that has been overlooked. Every party and leaders have made many bad decisions. Time changes morals and what is socially excepted . Times has changed, but without learning and moving on we don’t move forward. I say this with respect for all.
While this is very true, most people actually DO know this, though not the defining details. Before the Civil Rights Act, the parties were basically reversed in comparison to today. Then came the Civil Rights Act, which LBJ famously said that the Democrats had lost the south as he signed it. In an incredibly rapid series of events, Democrats and Republicans essentially pulled an Uno Reverse Card of their platforms. The two parties TO THIS DAY are defined by the signing of that act and the massive platform changes it caused.
Its true, but the political party's ideology has also changed drastically. There was a time when most southern states supported democrats, but today support republicans. Most of this came about during the rise conservatism and conservative ideals, especially during the Reagan era.

Now republicans call progressives socialists like it's a capital sin to want to evolve the country further.

And I don’t really see how the war on drugs is racist. Yes it wasn’t done well by any stretch of the imagination but if people from Mexico and South America are the ones bringing it in of course it’s going to affect those countries cause you have to attack it from the root and stop it from growing I.e. sending them back down there. And the people falling off of trains and who die in the desert of there on their choice and yes they are fleeing from bad situations and whatever but it’s not America’s problem to take on. Sure they can help but mass exodus’s to the border hurt those here and that’s not their burden to bear. We aren’t god even though some say we are. We have our own problems to fix without other countries citizens pulling down on us even more just because we are “better” than they are. And it sucks that your parents were killed but that it what happens when countries can’t control their populace. And the Hispanics are in no way being treated like the native Americans. And he isn’t going after all Latinos he’s going after all the criminals who are coming over to control their activities here. And it sucks that they have to go back but it is honestly putting more stress on everything that can’t take more stress. And the only reason the Democratic Party cares is that if they are the ones that say we should let all of them come in and no limits and lets put them on welfare and blah blah blah is because they want the votes. That’s why either party does anything is for votes. That’s politics and people get trampled on or feel like it because of what one party says about the other. I know what I say doesn’t matter but I just wanted to share my feelings

Most of this came about during the rise conservatism and conservative ideals, especially during the Reagan era.
hungrycrackpot I actually appreciate the insight. There is definitely some truth to some of that history you shared. I respect your knowledge. I guess I was just just trying to share some other facts that might have been overlooked. Our country HAS a complicated history and in that, no side is completely justified. So I DO know that.
It's pretty common knowledge. Democrats became Dixiecrats and eventually full republicans thanks to Nixon's Southern Plan. Republicans used to be the progressive party. The party of Lincoln and FDR. Now republicans call progressives socialists like it's a capital sin to want to evolve the country further.
Jeff Terrian like said I appreciate some of the insight. But no it’s not common knowledge, because it’s also not common knowledge about my initial comment. If feel like what I had originally said was overlooked.
It's amazing how many videos of Andrew Jackson can talk about his military exploits, his family life, or his Presidency. However, I don't recall seeing a video of the General about his service as a Tennessee Supreme Court Justice or as a member of Congress.
You will occasionally hear about the 1824 Election, when Jackson felt like he was cheated out of the Presidency. He resigned from the Senate after the 1824 to focus 4 years on winning the Presidency. But most of the time, that bit of Presidential History is usually on a video talking (1) about John Quincy Adams; (2) The Presidency in general; (3) Videos related to Presidential Elections.
The drawing you show numerous times is of a British officer slashing Jackson as a teenager because he refused to shine his boots.
If you want to learn more about Andrew Jackson read “American Lion” by Jon Meacham. Rarely are historical figures pure evil or pure hero like we try so hard to make them out to be. I’m not saying he didn’t have glaring faults, I’m saying the truth resists simplicity.

For the Trail of Tears, ask yourself "Why did it happen?" You have to remember the time it took place. I lost my mom and dad in Mexico as a result of criminal violence. Both were murdered. I have a picture of a white guy carrying a cat after a building was bombed because I love animals. I think the building in the background is Yugoslavia. When I was in the army I got to see many of those. I admire the Lakota, I love Counting Coup on my enemy. Just yesterday a white officer in Minneapolis killed an unarmed black man. His death was as gruesome as the trail of tears. The same goes for the many Asylum seekers from South America that have died falling off trains, succumbing to heat exhaustion in the Arizona Desert, Being the victims of human trafficking. The root cause of this modern day immigration is The 1996 Immigration Reform Act. It sent Gang Members from Southern California to South America. The authorities down there obviously were no match for American Organized Crime. (This happened in Cuba before Castro) American foreign policy has created the situations in Mexico and South America. Your wife and my Family and friends were not the victim of Bad Hombres, they are the victim of the racist American War on Drugs. It’s deeply offensive to me for you to say that The Plight of your People doesn’t compare to the plight of my people.
His death was definitely not as gruesome. It isn’t even close, while it is sad that he died and no one should go out like that the Native Americans were stripped of everything they had and forced to move to a worthless plot of land that they didn’t even get to keep. And yes America hasn’t helped the situation south of the border but in my opinion it isn’t their job to help everyone even though they do when they gain something which isn’t necessarily right but everyone is guilty of that.
