You make the best printmaking videos I've come across in a long time. Lot's of possibilities. Great chatter that explains each step of the processes very clearly. Also, cool garden setting for the wrap-up sitting beside the hollyhock. Thanks!
I just came across your channel in the last month or so and now I can't stop experimenting myself! Thank you for sharing with the internet your work and your techniques!
I really like this masking tape print technique! It will dovetail nicely into my current mixed media work. The sound levels were better this time. Keep up the great content!
This is the best l have seen so far. It is simple, l do not need specialist press nor inks, just everyday objects and l can print. This is so cool, l.am going to watch all your videos and learn from them. Thank you very much ❤👍
Hey there, so glad this resonated with you. i make all my art work at the kitchen table and try as much as possible to keep materials costs down and process accessible. : )
This makes more sense than any other similar demo I have seen. Very straightforward and soothingly tedious. I am looking forward to seeing how well I can try my hand at this as well as how much mileage I can get. I really ripped into a finger with a lino knife as a teen and after multiple stitches and months to heal, I never really wanted to carve again. This is much more my speed.
That's great news. A bad lino knife cut is enough to put anyone off. This technique is cheaper, cleaner and, in some ways, more versatile. Hope it goes well for you! : )
I have been watching you for a couple of days and only just realised I have to sign in to like and comment ! These tutorials are the BEST . Thank you so much ! Who knew what you can do with masking tape . I am so exited to get in my studio next week and start printmaking again . I especially take away the importance of oposites in terms of marks . You can appreciate the expressive marks so much better because of the geometric and grid elements . Cheers !! Mary
Your instructions are clear and understandable. I’m learning from you and your techniques are taking my book making to anew direction. I’ve been working on a handmade book of inspirational fish quotes and wondered how I would illustrate it. I needed a dragon image and fish images…how amazing! I will use your images as a spring board. Greetings from Aus.
I was binge watching your channel. A great discovery and I finally ordered a spray can of liquid rubber to test with the masking tape relief plates to see whether is reduces or improves the durability and versatility of these plates. I had liquid rubber in the back of my mind for stamp creation for a while now in combination with epoxy or fimo as the relief piece to coat with rubber coat for the squishiness and surface to hold and release the ink / paint. I have no idea a whether this is a viable idea, but watching your channel was just the kick in my pants to finally give it a try. Thanks for a great channel and splendid ideas and inspirations.
Superb videos, perfect length. Great artwork, informative new techniques. How much more encouragement do you need to keep making them? I'm binge watching as I recently found you. I'm a huge Gelli fan so like gel related work best . So refreshing to see some intended art work with gel techniques but appreciate all printmaking. Thank you.
Hi Ivana - thanks for thanks and feedback - it's great to know what's working and what isn't and it's a pleasure to share some ideas and techniques. : )
Have you tested how many prints you can pull from tape matrix before the plates sharpness/quality deteriorates? Excited to try this technique out, thanks for sharing.
You're welcome! A pleasure to make the videos and glad you'll try the technique. You can get loads of prints from one plate, easily enough to do an edition of 20 or more. As long as you use water based ink and wash carefully with warm water, dry properly before printing again etc.
Oh, he was Stella. It is 20 years since he passed so drawing and using some of his old kit, amongst a lot of other things, keeps him in my mind and heart : ) xx
Aaah, that explains the sudden surge in subscribers!!!!! I was wondering! I'm very flattered someone thought to share my channel. Do you know who it was? I can send some thanks in a video!
Couldn’t resist another masking tape video. I’ve never tried it but really love the effects. Great drawing by you Dad. Easy to see where you get your skills from. Obviously you own efforts but guessing you were introduced to art at a young age.
I saw in a response that you can get up to 20 prints from each plate. . . Using “water based ink” and careful cleaning. Hmmm. Do you mean a water-based INK or acrylic paint? Do you put a protective, acrylic spray over the plate? How do you “wash” the plate? They seem so delicate.
This is so cool! Curious how you avoided cutting through the acetate when you were cutting out the tape shapes? Is it just about finding the right pressure to go through one but not the other?
Cheers Eric, glad to know you're still watching the videos and thanks for the support. Just keep it simple to start with, shapes, layers, get a feel for it. Nothing to lose!!!
I checked out your work on Instagram BTW, really impressive techniques and assemblage / collage / photomontage. I reckon this masking tape technique could work well for you...
Hello, question about washing. Does the masking tape peel if washed with warm water? And do you have to wash / dry with each print? Thanks so much for the brilliant content. I've never seen printing like this before?
hey there, I wash and dry the plate about every 6 or 7 prints - the low relief does mean you start to lose details and definition as ink collects around edges. gentle warm water then sandwich between a tea towel to dry and you're good to go. First print is always a little light, much like with block printing. happy printing!
Another wonderful video. Impressive range of marks and textures from the masking tape! I haven't yet tried this technique, but I'm looking forward to doing so. Have you ever tried registering multi-pass plates, with masking tape? Seems like it should be possible. I thought of this because of your ...[looking it up]... "'Stencil effect' portrait painting tutorial" video and something about the layered tape and textures of ink on the goldfish. I suppose you might want to leave at least a tab of the base material. ...Or, I guess you could trace the outline of each plate you wanted to use, and register by eye. Don't know. Anyway, just wondering if you've tried it. Really impressed with this technique. How long did it take you in real time to create the plates for these? Even compensating for the time lapse, you seem to be really fast with the scalpel.
Feel free to delete this comment as soon as you see it, but I'd really like to have one of the two mixed-media prints from this video, if they're not already spoken for, and if you can hold off selling them until you've reestablished an online sales platform. I have a slight preference for the one with the stars, but I really love both of them, so either would be great!
@@Xenopticon You took the words right out of my mouth, except that I prefer the other print. 😆 So if he wants to sell both prints, he could definitely do so! I'm a fishkeeper (though bettas, guppies, corydoras and more are more my style), so the subject matter is cool, but also, I just love the background story, that it's a print from his father's art. I followed in my father's footsteps in my vocation, so that feels very special.

@@yeatesmakes I believe it is a paint that is made for t-shirt design that dries 3D per se. I also think you can 'build' on the layers. It comes in a bottle with a fine tip, so just a thought. I woke up thinking it might/could work for a more permanent stamp. I'll give it a try soon, and keep you posted. Have a great day, and thanks for your wonderful videos. 🙂
Really glad I found your channel! So many useful things! The only thing I didn’t understand from the video: when you cut out the shapes of the masking tape, you don’t cut the original drawing?
Hi Julia, thanks for the comment, very kind. As long as you use a sharp scalpel and don't press to hard the blade doesn't go through the acetate sheet. Just needs a little practice to get the pressure right!
