Truth be told, it's not Gelli Arts, it's Drew Streinbrecher who has organised the summit. He was the one who reached out. Not sure I'd be the best ambassador for Gelli Arts because I use a mix of brands and couldn't cope with the distraction of having to place their products constantly!!!!

My mom wrote craft books in the 80's and 90's, many using textile medium. I grew up with the stuff. To heat set, we would just toss things in the dryer. I still have a shirt my mom painted for my grandma and the paint has not changed. We used various types of acrylics and textile mediums with no issues. I guess she did tend to use the mediums in the squirt bottles. It also allows you to tie dye with a spray bottle with cold water outside. I'm a big fan of textile medium lol.
One suggestion for printing on clothes is to use a waxed piece of cardboard inside your garment to keep it smooth and easy to move around if you need to. The wax keeps the paint from sticking to the board. They used to sell t-shirt boards at the craft stores for this.
I just recently fell down the rabbit hole of gelli plates. Now I want to see what I can do on some recycled clothing lol. Thanks for the reminder!

T shirts move. So get an a4 piece of cardboard and centre the printing area, then wrap the excess cloth and secure with a rubber band behind board. Make sure weave is straight. Much easier😊

I have taken a couple of classes, at some expense, both online and in person, and still have to credit you with being the most informative about all the different ways I can create prints. I am mostly printing on textiles, and some of your techniques work much better on paper…but I thank you for encouraging me to continue experimenting with what will work!

We always called the fabric medium 'snot' when I was doing art foundation 😊

Years ago I did t-shirt printing with linoleum cuts. We found that it was best to wash the shirts once before printing to remove any sizing from the fabric. The printing lasts better that way.

@@yeatesmakesusing a foam roller with the textile paint on it is an easy way to stencil onto a t-shirt.. no need to transfer with a Gel plate…👍🏻

I love how easy this looks. I have used textile paints on my gel plate to transfer on t shirts and I was really happy with the outcome, but now I would like to try that medium. It would give me more color flexibility. Thank you for this!

Hi Mark! Great vid, thank you! To augment absorbency on the t-shirts wash them first in water with salt and vinegar (1 tablespoon of each in a gallon of water) This way you’ll get rid of starches and fats. Cheers!

the freezer paper we have here is a plastic layer on paper back. For quilting stencils, we iron the stencil plastic side down and it sticks lightly to the fabric, easy to remove later. You could do this for your freezer paper stencils on fabric before you "paint" with you gel plate. Maybe ou did this and I missed that part, I saw spray sticky - this would eliminate that step. Great info to know it works on fabric!
The fabric of the shirt does make a difference.

Try some screen pring ink will last longer.
There are many brands of fabric paint and my shirts lasted far more than 28 washes. You can also buy a tshirt form that is made of cardboard in the art supply catalog or like I said just use some stiff foam core. I used to paint direct on the shirts or sweatshirts with stiff fabric paint brushes. You have to push it through the cotton. I still have a sweatshirt I painted over 20 years ago.

Ive hand printed hundreds of metres of fabric use block prints.. Can't wait to use my Gelli pad. I tie T Shirts and sell them at the markets .. such fun
what paints or medium did you use? i've tried block printing with acrylics and some fabric paints, but the results were not satisfying, some paints cracked and some washed out :/
@@jagnazacrylic paint isn't ideal for block printing. I recomend using speedball fabric/textile block printing ink or essdee fabrick block printing ink. Once the prints are cured, you can seal them by ironing them
Mark - love your videos. Most textile artists use a padded surface to print on under the shirts (like ironing board padding) as pressure needs to get the ink into the fabric unlike flat paper
Maybe the softness of the gel plate accomplishes that?

I think the trick must be the leaving it with the weights, because if you don’t , the design doesn’t take as well. Great video..If you have some of those non stick paper palette pads.. iron them to fix the shiny side to fabric then add paint..with pre cut stencil of course..and I would try that left over piece of book covering plastic that you used too..cheers from Australia

I used to hand-paint t-shirts. I used acrylic paint with no fabric medium. After they dried, I ironed them and they stayed as vivid as when I first painted them. Now. I WAS painting them like watercolours but I also did ones that were more solid and they also lasted through many washes.
One I painted for my husband was as vivid several years later and through weekly or bi-weekly washes.
I’d be interested to see how acrylic with no fabric medium works when doing the Gelli printing.

cool vid, love screen printing, too lazy to pull it off. My tech is painting/writing in reverse on pvc board, house paint whatever is on hand. Creates outlined graphics. No weigh down, a good all round press & clean lift onto a hanger to dry. Cardboard inside to prevent all the way thru print.
Awesome work! I'm particularly glad to learn that the image transfers work better with the screen printing medium added to the paint. I'd be interested to learn how well the fabric medium works on paper, as well. I got some advice from an art supply store, some time ago, that you don't need to set or otherwise treat fabric products when used on paper, since they'll never be washed. I'm curious to know your experience with this. Thanks for once again pushing boundaries, here. I can't wait to see where you go with these techniques!
Hi there, I'll do a few more laser transfer with textile medium on paper and see how they go, then report back. May have just been luck, but the two I did came up very clean. Certainly on paper there would be no need to fix the colour :)
@@yeatesmakes Of course it's not going to be laundered! LOL I was thinking more in terms of [edit: long-term] adhesion to the paper, if not heat set, and its color fastness.

You should get the first 35mm 1.4. Magic.
You can try not using fabric softener on your tshirts before printing. They might take the paint a bit better. Just a thought. Your are doing great as always. Everything you make is so cool. Thanks for sharing your ideas and discoveries with us.
